That's all we have from this game which saw Afghanistan getting eliminated and Sri Lanka keeping their hopes alive. However, you do not need to go too far away as England and New Zealand have arrived at The Gabba with the result of the game having massive repercussions for their group. The game is scheduled to begin at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT). Do switch tabs and get all the updates. Cheers!

Dasun Shanaka, the captain of Sri Lanka, says that it was a good all-around performance. He credits Dhananjaya de Silva for his superb innings. Adds that they found some consistency in this game and will look to continue that. Mentions that they do not have control over other results, but they will need to win their last game and at a healthy run rate.

Mohammad Nabi, the skipper of Afghanistan, says they were good in the powerplay but could not put pressure on the opponents and therefore could not reach a good score. Mentions that they did not bowl good lines and lengths as there were too many short balls, which allowed the batters to hit the ball. Claims that since they haven't played their last few games they have not been able to build momentum in the tournament. Says they would have liked to play more and hopefully, they can get the win in the last game.

Wanindu Hasaranga is the Player of the Match for his match figures of 4-0-13-3. He says that they had to play their best cricket in this game after the two losses and he is happy with the performance. Adds that he saw Adam Zampa bowl really well and tried to vary his pace and bowl at the wickets. Mentions that he went for some runs in Perth but he had the confidence to come back. Tells that he knows how to bowl with bigger boundaries.

Time for the presentation...

The game was set up by the Sri Lankan bowlers though as they restricted the Afghanistan batters to an under-par score in the first inning. The top four batters got off to a decent start but could not convert it to big scores and that cost them 15 or so runs. Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as he claimed three wickets for a measly 13 runs in his four overs. After failing in the last two games, the Sri Lankan batters would have been nervous coming into the crease but did not really show it as they achieved the target with ease.

Afghanistan did not get much swing at the start of the inning but Mujeeb Ur Rahman took an early wicket once again. They were however unable to take wickets in quick succession which allowed their opponents to accumulate runs at a steady pace. They once again depended on their lead spinner Rashid Khan to help them out but his two wickets were not enough to win Afghanistan this game. They have not yet performed at the best of their abilities and find themselves out of the competition.

Sri Lanka did not get off to the best of starts losing Pathum Nissanka early but Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis steadied the inning thereafter. The latter was dismissed after a decent start but Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa came out to play handy supporting roles for Dhananjaya de Silva who reached an outstanding half-century. His 66 of just 42 balls guided Sri Lanka to an easy win with 9 balls to spare.

Dhananjaya de Silva has guided his team to a comprehensive victory over their Asian counterparts! This has been a comfortable win for Sri Lanka and they keep their chances of making it to the semi-finals alive with a 6-wicket win. They negotiated a tricky run chase with ease with the top order finally putting up a steady performance. Afghanistan will exit the tournament with this loss and will find themselves looking back at the two washed-out games. They have a chance to dent Australia’s hope and pick up a consolation win in their last fixture.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, the two openers for Sri Lanka are walking out to the middle.  Fazalhaq Farooqi to start with the new ball for Afghanistan. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, both teams are desperate for a win here and Sri Lanka will fancy their chances here. Their batting has been circumspect in the last two games and they need to put on a good performance if they are to chase down this target. Afghanistan have a good bowling attack and their spinners are renowned for defending low totals. We are set for an interesting run chase shortly.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is up for a chat. He says that the score is not too bad and they can defend it. Adds that the pitch is a bit slow and the spinners are getting some help from it. Mentions that the bigger boundaries will help their bowlers.

Afghanistan got off to a steady start as they negotiated the swing early against the Sri Lankan pace bowlers. They scored 42 runs in the Powerplay without losing a wicket but lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz right after as he was bowled by Lahiru Kumara. Sri Lanka got a bit of control thereafter with their spinners but Usman Ghani kept getting the occasional boundaries before he was dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga. Ibrahim Zadran and Najibullah Zadran both got off to decent starts like the openers but they could not get going as well and were dismissed by Lahiru Kumara and Dhananjaya de Silva respectively. The rest of the batters could not really get going with Wanindu Hasaranga taking wickets towards the end and ending with three wickets for 13 runs in his four overs. The Lankans will be happy about restricting their opponents to under 150 runs.

Afghanistan have just collapsed towards the end and they would feel like they have 10-15 runs short of a reasonable total on the board! They have managed to put up 144 runs which could be enough if their spinners come to the party. Sri Lanka will be thrilled with their effort with the ball but will have to look closely at their catching. That level of fielding at an international level is unacceptable and if they had taken their chances they would have been right on top of this game.

We are done with the pre-match formalities. It is time for some action! The players are walking out to the middle. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Usman Ghani are the two openers for Afghanistan. Kasun Rajitha to start proceedings with the ball. Let's play...

The umpires and the players have lined up in the middle for the national anthems. It will be Sri Lanka's national anthem first followed by the national anthem of Afghanistan.

PITCH REPORT - Samuel Badree is by the pitch and he says that there have been overnight showers and the ground staff has worked diligently to get a game going. Mentions that there are sizeable boundaries so it would help the bowlers a bit. He is joined by Nasser Hussain who says that it is quite dry for a Gabba pitch but it has held together well. Adds that there are darker areas in the pitch which may interest the spinners it may crumble. Claims that there is little but for the batters, pacers as well as slow bowlers. Ends by saying that a lot will depend on how the spinners are captained and that will be vital.

Dasun Shanaka the skipper of Sri Lanka says that they would have batted first as well. Informs that they have one change. Claims that losses, as they suffered in the last two games, can happen in a tournament like this but they need to come back. Adds that they are a good fielding side and they just need to pick up their confidence in the field. Mentions that they need to win this game and then the next one as well to stand a chance of qualifying for the semi-final.

Mohammad Nabi the captain of Afghanistan says that they will bat first. Adds that it is a used pitch and they will want to put runs on the board and then go on and defend it. Mentions that everyone is fine and the preparation is good except for Hazratullah Zazai who is injured. Tells that Mujeeb Ur Rahman will be important in the Powerplay as he knows this ground well.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka (C), Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara, Pramod Madushan (In place of Chamika Karunaratne).

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Gulbadin Naib (In place of Hazratullah Zazai), Ibrahim Zadran, Usman Ghani, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi (C), Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fareed Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

TOSS - The captains are out in the middle. The coin is flipped into the air and lands in favor of Afghanistan. They have elected to BAT first.

Sri Lanka on the other hand, have won only one game and lost two but they were in a solid position in both games to go on and win the match. Their lack of experience and poor fielding has cost them big time. They are also short of pace bowlers after many of their frontline pacers got injured and ruled out. Looking at their difficulties, they have played well but that was clearly not enough. Although they avenged their Asia Cup 2022 loss in that tournament, this is going to be a competitive match. Let's see who comes out on top. Toss and team news in a bit.
