With the monkey off his back, Nathan Lyon is bowling with a nice rhythm. Nathan Lyon has scaled the mountain of 400 wickets in Test cricket, it has been an arduous climb, to be honest, as Lyon had to spend extra time in preying that elusive one wicket. He is only behind two greats, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, in the list of the leading wicket-takers for Australia in Test cricket. From being a pitch curator at the Adelaide Oval to becoming only the 7th spinner in Test cricket history to do so after the famous six - Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, Rangana Herath, Harbhajan Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin, it's been one heck of a ride. Just in - It's official!!! The fifth Ashes Test is heading to Hobart as a day-night series finale, confirms the official Twitter handle of Australia.

The Aussies dominated the first two days of the Test but Day 3, which is considered to be a moving day in Test cricket belonged to England. The Australian bowlers gave it their all but ended the day with just 2 wickets and would be a touch disappointed, especially after a terrific performance in the first innings. Pat Cummins tried six different bowlers but England's batters showed a huge amount of grit and determination. Nathan Lyon continued his hunt for his 400th Test wicket and he seemed nowhere close to his best. Their pace bowlers will need to bring their A-game on Day 4 and the good thing for them is that the new ball is due in 10 overs. Cummins and company would be keen to take full advantage of this red cherry and make early inroads in the first session. All to play for in the first Ashes Test as all three results are still possible and it promises to be another exciting day of Test cricket.

England have made a roaring comeback into this Test match after conceding a lead of 278 runs in the first innings. Earlier on Day 3, the English bowlers bowled out Australia for 425 and once again found themselves in a spot of bother at 61/2 in their second innings. It was England's skipper, Joe Root and Dawid Malan who dug deep and ensured that they did not lose any more wickets. They now trail by 58 runs and the first session on Day 4 is going to be extremely vital for both teams. Root and Malan's first target of the day would be to cut the deficit without losing any wickets and then score as many runs as possible. All eyes would be on the No.1 ranked Test batter, Joe Root, who would be eyeing his first Test hundred on Australian soil.

The Aussie bowlers toiled hard on Day 3 but the visitors showed great resistance and we are in for an enthralling fourth day of this Ashes Test.

...DAY 4, SESSION 1...

What can we expect over the weekend? Friday started as possibly being the last day of this Test. Now, we could well be in a position to have another 5 sessions of cricket, though a couple of early wickets might just change that. This match hangs nicely in the balance. Dawid Malan and Joe Root were extremely patient early on and then started to up the ante, attacking the likes of Lyon and Green. Both survived some nervous moments in the last half hour of play but are still unseparated, having stitched a partnership of 159. Australia bowled in decent lines and lengths but this pitch seems to have gotten quicker and apart from that, there looks to be nothing much on the deck. Also, the Aussie bowlers looked a bit tired with the sun staying out the whole day. However, all these are expected in a good Test match played between balanced teams. Cummins will know that, in spite of this being his first real test of captaincy. He had his bowlers around for a pep talk but applauded everyone for their efforts. Saturday will be a new day and a fresh start will be expected from them on Day 4. Australia will still believe that if they can knock two wickets quickly in the opening hour, who knows, they might come back strongly in this game.

The day began with Australia having 3 wickets in their bank and leading by 196. England would have hoped to finish off the tail quickly but Starc hung around with Head to push Australia beyond 400. Eventually, when the visitors did manage to get the Aussies all done, the deficit read 278. They began their second dig on a rough note too, losing Burns early yet again. But after that, Hameed and Malan dug in, frustrating the Kangaroos. Hameed lost his concentration and his wicket but since then, it has all been Malan and Root.

Lots of oohhs and aahs from the 'Gabba crowd as that final ball was bowled. Did Joe nick it? Was there an edge? Naah.... everything's settled and that caps a fantastic day for England in this opening Test of the 2021-22 Ashes. What a phenomenal comeback. Starting the innings being 278 behind, they have now got themselves in a position of balance, trailing by just 58 now and having 8 wickets in the bank. Another tough day for the bowlers, but this time, the Aussies were at the receiving end.

... Day 3, Session 3 ...

The final sessions in Australia usually bring a lot of runs. And sometimes, wickets too. If England just hang in there for a while, this could be a big session in terms of runs and we could have this Test right back in the balance. 39 overs are left in the day, so potentially around 125-130 runs can be scored. Australia will not be too disappointed with their efforts. On another hot and humid day, the fast bowlers have given it their all, minus Starc. Not surprising, is it? The great Shane Warne had already predicted on Thursday that Starc usually struggles in the second innings if he does well in the first and that is what happened. Pat Cummins continues to lead from the front while Hazlewood continues to be probing. Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon is still searching for his 400th Test wicket. Will he get to the milestone? As of now, Cummins has not been forced to bring on his 5th bowler but if another 30 minutes pass by without a wicket, Cameron Green will be given the ball and that is the time to attack, as Australia did in the evening of Day 2.

Sometimes, wearing down the opposition works well. Australia started the session post Lunch strongly, getting two wickets but then Malan and Root just stood strong. They struggled for a little bit but ensured that they did not throw their wicket away. And eventually, a few loose deliveries allowed the England batters some scoring opportunities. The visitors need their skipper and Dawid Malan to bat throughout the final session to ensure that the vigil brings a good result.

Slow and sluggish! That is the best possible way to describe the session. 84/2 in 28 overs at 3 rpo. What is wrong with that, you ask? Shane Warne digresses the way the GOAT has been bowling in the last few innings. Warney reckons that usually, Lyon lures the batter in flight, makes him come forward and varies his speed well. But because he is overeager to get to that milestone of 400, the flight has lessened and Lyon's greatest strength - accuracy - is deserting him. Warne adds that if Lyon can just be patient, as he otherwise normally is, number 400 will come. It is not a matter of will, just a matter of when.

Mitchell Starc came close to getting Rory Burns LBW but height saved him. Other than that, both started on a positive note. Start of this session saw Australia pile up more runs to their lead, thanks to an incredible innings from Travis Head and cameos from Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. Now, Australia still in much control of the game but they will look to get wickets at regular intervals while England will try and stitch a few knocks just like their counterparts did as it is still a long way to go for them. Australia have completely bossed the game so far. On Day 1 their bowlers did their job by folding England for a paltry score of 147 and on Day 2 their batters did their job with David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne both scoring half centuries although got to feel for Warner who missed out on a ton by just 6 runs. Later, it was Travis Head who scored runs aggressively and reached the milestone off just 85 balls which is also the fastest Test century at The Gabba. It was a spirited performance from the England's front three pacers but only if they had taken every opportunity which came in their way, the side would have been in a much better position. The Brits will now look to wrap things up and come out to bat with a much more positive intent but will still need a herculean task to get out of this rut.

Australia are in a commanding position now extending their lead to 196 and still have 3 wickets in hand but more importantly, have Travis Head at the crease who brought up his first Ashes ton. Australia will look to pile as many runs as possible and put England completely out of the contest as there is still ample of time to get a result unless rain plays a spoilsport. Right then! Yet another dominating performance from Australia and they end the second day on a high. They lead by 196 runs and will look to add as many runs as possible while England will look to take those last three wickets quickly. David Warner is up for a chat, he says that England bowled really well and they were relentless. Tells that how incredible innings it was from Head. Says it was a tight battle between Khawaja and Head and Head got the nod and then scored a brilliant century. Tells that one doesn't know if it will be their last day or not so one has to go out, enjoy and make the most out of it. Mentions that when you are out of runs, you need some luck and he got exactly that.

England were in a good position but Head's brilliant batting took the game away from them. They have to blame themselves, misfields, drop catches, run out chances. Opportunities were there but all went begging. First, it was the partnership between Warner and Labuschagne and then once they fell, Head came out of nowhere and made things from bad to worse. Everyone were looking tired, bowlers, fielders and even Root, who had no clue what to do and get back into the game.

David Warner started the day with Marnus Labuschagne walking out later on the other end and the duo did really well to play the first session with great composure but Labuschagne fell just after posting a partnership in excess of 150. After that, wickets started tumbling and even Warner missed out on his century. It was then, Travis Head who was looking so good in the middle, just wanted someone to stay at the other end as he was scoring the bulk of runs. The tail-enders did really well to help him reach the landmark as he brought up his first Ashes century.

Absolutely wonderful innings from Travis Head, scoring his first Ashes hundred, stuff to dream of. Australia in pole position as they end the day with a lead of 196 runs and looks like they are not yet done. Travis Head walks off to a standing ovasion from the Gabba crowd and his teammates as well and he has righly deserved so.

He looks to his left, then his right and in the end, realizes that the ball is coming at him. Runs forward but the ball bounces in front of him and worse, hits his body and deflects behind. It lobs in the air and Hameed looks to stop it off the rebound but too late, the ball is beyond the ropes! Oh dear, that is right in front of a vocal 'Gabba crowd and it is cheering!

Just a bit of a personal opinion. First up, hats off to Ben Stokes for bowling even with so much discomfort. One can clearly see him in pain, and one would assume that he has been on the field just so that he is not stripped off his batting position for not spending enough time on the field. But one also needs to remember that this is just the first match of a massive 5-Test series. Should Joe Root just look after Stokes' health a little bit more? Yes, England need wickets right now, but in that process, they might end up sacrificing one of the world's greatest allrounders. Remember Ashes 2019, where Root overworked Jofra Archer and the result was a spate of injuries? Food for thought. Joe Root does take Ben Stokes off the attack and introduces himself to bowl. Good call this from the skipper.

OUT! CAUGHT! Would you believe it? Warner misses out on a century. Robinson hurls in and bowls a slower ball, on middle. The ball stops a bit on the surface. Devastation for David Warner as he walks back to the pavilion after an excellent knock. For the first time in seven occasions, David Warner failed to hit a century after being dismissed off a no ball in a Test innings.

... Day 2, Session 3 ...

England created a couple of chances but were let down by the sloppiness in the field. First, Rory Burns dropped Warner and then Haseeb Hameed missed a run out chance. The seamers tried everything and toiled hard but couldn't get the breakthrough. Although, Jack Leach remained expensive throughout, it was him who got England that one wicket they were searching for and then Mark Wood got the wicket of the big gun - Steven Smith, which he thoroughly deserved for his probing line and lengths. The wickets remain key for them to keep the deficit as low as possible and first would be targeting David Warner who is inching closer to his century. Post Lunch, runs came very easily for the hosts! David Warner who was bowled off a no-ball in the morning session, rode his luck again as he was given two more reprieves. He got to his 31st Test fifty and Marnus Labuschagne from the other end continued to tick along and the runs kept flowing for them. Later, Marnus Labuschagne tried to attack Jack Leach on each and every ball and in the process holed out. While David Warner continued on his merry way, Steven Smith had a very scratchy stay and departed early. Australia now lead by 46 runs and still have 7 wickets in hand to post a hefty lead.

Some respite for England as they have removed the two big fish - Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith and look to crawl their way back into the game.

Mark Wood there grabs the catch and Marnus Labuschagne walks off the pitch after a fine innings. Huge applause from the crowd as well. Can England build on this now?

SIX! SMACKED! Loopy ball, on off. Marnus Labuschagne shimmies down the track and muscles it over long off for a maximum. Courageous batting this! Jack Leach continues to be expensive.
