Australia beat South Africa by 5 wickets

Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

Right then! We had a thrilling game here but the action continues in the second clash of the day. It is a rematch of the 2016 T20 World Cup final as West Indies will take on England. That action will begin at 6 pm Local (2 pm GMT). So join us for the same. Switch tabs and enjoy that action!

Aaron Finch, the skipper of Australia, says that they were pretty nervous in the end but credits Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade for the way they batted at the end. Adds that the bowlers bowled well and says that Glenn Maxwell bowled beautifully. Tells that the guys need to be rested keeping in mind the workload of the players and they have got some world-class players in their lineup. Credits the South African team by saying that they are one of the best fielding sides going around and they bowled well throughout.

Temba Bavuma, the skipper of South Africa, says that they were resilient in the game and credits the team for taking the game deep. Adds that the Australian bowlers bowled well and did not give the batters many freebies. Credits Aiden Markram for the way he batted and says that the other batters must step up. Finishes by saying that there were positives in this game for them.

Josh Hazlewood, Player of the Match, says length was the key on that wicket. Adds that he was lucky to get the wicket of Quinton de Kock. Tells that the wicket is a bit slow and mentions that they bowled really well. Credits Glenn Maxwell by saying that he was brilliant with the ball in hand and played the role of an all-rounder.

Earlier in the day, after electing to bowl, the Australian bowlers restricted South Africa to a low total thanks to a combined bowling effort. Aiden Markram was the only one from South Africa who played well and it was because of him they got close to 120. Their bowlers really made a good fight of it but it was the crucial stand between Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade that gave the Aussies the win.

The South African bowlers bowled with all their heart! They were also exceptional in the field. Just hardly bowled any freebies. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje were exceptional at the start. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi kept the pressure going. Dwaine Pretorius also did a handy job but one just feels they just did not have enough runs on the board. Another 15 runs or so, it could well have been a different story.

Australia though always found run-scoring tough, they lost their top three quickly. Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell then steadied the ship with a good stand and just as it seemed like the two are going to take the Aussies home, Smith fell. Maxwell soon followed. They needed around 9 per over when Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade found themselves in the middle. The two batted really sensibly and took their side over the line.

What a game of cricket! In the end, it is the Aussies who get the vital two points but credit to South Africa to make a match out of it as at the halfway mark, we felt it is going to be a one-sided contest. Credit to Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade who came in when the game was in balance and have done the job with a match-winning stand.

We are set for the chase to get underway! The players of South Africa have made their way out to the middle. David Warner and Aaron Finch are at the crease! Kagiso Rabada will start with the ball.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Now the total is not a big one for the Aussies and they should chase this down. The wicket is slightly on the slower side but the score is still well under par. South Africa do have a fearsome bowling lineup and they will need to pick wickets early on. Will the Aussies make a mockery of the run chase or is there a fightback loading?

Glenn Maxwell is down for a chat. He says that everything went pretty much as per their plans. Adds that he is trying to follow Shane Watson's footsteps and get wickets with the ball. Adds that the pitch is on the slower side but he hopes that they can get to a flying start. Says that South Africa have a world-class bowling attack but a flying start should seal the deal for them.

For South Africa, just the one batter crossed the 20-run mark and that was Aiden Markram. He though saw wickets losing at the other end. There were a couple of stands that looked like building between him and Heinrich Klaasen and then Markram and David Miller but none kicked on. In the end, it is a poor batting effort from the South Africans.

After Finch elected to bowl, Aaron Finch went for over 11 in his first over but the move to give Glenn Maxwell the second worked wonders as he struck in his first over. Once the first wicket fell, wickets just kept tumbling. Josh Hazlewood then worked his magic with the new ball. By the end of the first 6, South Africa were already 3 down. Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins then kept the pressure on in the middle overs. Every time a partnership started to build, Australia managed to break it. Starc, who was not at his best came back strongly towards the death. All the bowlers managed to take a wicket at least and have justified their skipper's decision to bowl first.

That is a forgetful way for South Africa to begin their T20 World Cup campaign but the Aussies have started off with a bang! From chasing down a mammoth total in their final warm-up game to being restricted to an under-par total clearly indicates that the South Africans have succumbed to the pressure of the big event. Saying that, take nothing away from the Aussies who were spot on with the ball, except for the first over, Aaron Finch and co. have not put a foot wrong. Sensational stuff from them.

The players of both teams make their way out for the national anthems! First, it will be the anthem of South Africa which will be played, followed by the anthem of Australia! We are done with the national anthems and it is game time! The players of Australia spread out in the field. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma are the opening batters for South Africa who are at the crease! Before we begin, the players take knee to protest against racism! It is Mitchell Starc who will start with the ball. Here we go!

Temba Bavuma, the skipper of South Africa, says that he is a bit nervous. Adds that they have two spinners, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, an all-rounder, and an extra batter in Heinrich Klaasen at number 6. Says that they have played quite a bit of cricket in the recent past and that helps. Mentions that they don't have the tag of favorites but they hope to play good cricket.

Aaron Finch, the skipper of Australia, says it looks like a good wicket, he feels it will be the same throughout. Adds they have a lot of experience, they have not had the luxury to play together in a few series but they are looking forward to this. Informs Agar and Inglis miss out. Also says he loves batting with Warner and he is someone he would rather play with and not against.

Australia (Playing XI) - Aaron Finch (C), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade (WK), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Temba Bavuma (C), Aiden Markram, David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi.

TOSS - It is time for the coin toss! Both the skippers are out in the middle for the same. Up goes the coin and it lands in favour of Australia. They will BOWL first!

PITCH REPORT - Sunil Gavaskar is down for the pitch report. He says that the pitch looks very even and the bowlers will get some help with the new ball. Danny Morrison says that it is quite warm in the middle. Adds that Glenn Maxwell will be a key player for Australia as he can hit the ball in all directions.

South Africa, on the other hand, will be coming into this game high on confidence having won both of their warm-up games, especially against a strong Pakistan side. Just like Australia, South Africa too haven't had much success at the T20 World Cup but this time around they seem to be a balanced side with a mix of world-class bowlers which includes Tabraiz Shamsi, the number 1 ranked T20I bowler and some experienced T20 batters in the form of Quinton de Kock, David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen. Temba Bavuma, South Africa's skipper, would be hoping that there are no injury concerns for them going into this match, especially Tabraiz Shamsi, and all of them are available for selection. So many things to look forward to in this mouth-watering encounter which begins shortly. Who will draw first blood then? We'll find that soon. Stay tuned for toss and further updates.

Australia, known to be a champion side, especially at the big stage, haven't been able to crack the T20 World Cup code so far as they haven't tasted much success at this mega event. Aaron Finch and his men would be keen to turn things around in this edition and they do have a formidable side as well. The likes of in-form Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis are key to Australia's chances and not to forget that spin is also going to play a huge role in UAE. Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar have their task cut out and they will need to be at their absolute best. The Aussies have got a solid 15-man squad and their skipper, Finch has already confirmed ahead of the match that they will be going in with four specialist bowlers.

The wait is finally over as the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 is set to kick off in UAE. A very warm welcome to the opening encounter where South Africa will take on Australia in Abu Dhabi's scorching heat.
