That is it from this game! England take the lead in the 3-match series with a comfortable win. Sri Lanka have a lot of work to do if they are to put up a better fight. Join us on Thursday, 1st July for the second ODI. That game begins at 1300 local (1200 GMT). Make sure you join us for that one. Till then, goodbye and cheers!

Chris Woakes is the MAN OF THE MATCH. He says, you always figure it out as a bowler, what the current conditions are and only look to assess the conditions. Adds that in ODI you can't often lose the length and have to keep it on the stumps. Says his rhythm was not too bad and it feels amazing to stride out so well for the team.

Eoin Morgan, the England skipper is up for a chat, He says that he is delighted with the way the bowlers bowled. Gives full credit to bowlers for bowling well and putting on a great display. Mentions that Root is a world-class player, he never seems to struggle and it was good to see him perform. States that Test match priorities have not allowed Joe Root to play a lot of T20 cricket.

Kusal Perera, the Sri Lanka skipper is down for a chat, he says that he tries to do the basics and looks to bat long once he is set. Adds that Hasaranga put in a good knock and he is also very good with the ball. Says that they need to do much better with the bat and have to give their bowlers a decent score to defend and they will look to do that in the next couple of games.

Earlier in the day, England asked Sri Lanka to bat first. The visitors' inexperience was there to see as they struggled with the willow. Barring skipper, Kusal Perera and Wanindu Hasarang's fifties, there was hardly anything to write home about. The England bowlers set up the win with the ball with Chris Woakes being the chief destructor. He was irresistible and finished with 4/18 from his 10 overs.

A lot of credit to the Sri Lankan bowlers and nothing can be held against them. They gave it their all, made the total look as challenging as possible. They just did not have enough runs to play with and at times, the fielding was not very supportive. Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers. He started waywardly but came back strongly to finish with 3 wickets. Binura Fernando and Chamika Karunaratne were the other two to get into the wickets column.

Chasing a well below par score of 186, England got off the blocks in style as Jonny Bairstow took the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers. Wickets though started to fell in clusters after the departure of Liam Livingstone. From 54/0 the hosts found themselves at 80/4. Moeen Ali was given a lifeline too as he was dropped on a duck. The flying start and low total meant there was hardly any pressure. Moeen Ali and Joe Root took their time and eased the hosts close to the finish line. The former was unable to see the side past the coast but Root stayed there to see his side through.

A relatively easy win for England, there were some hiccups but never did they look in any real danger. Sri Lanka can take a few positives with their bowling but a lot of work needs to be done with the bat as it continues to be their Achilles heel. A lot of work for the tourists to do if they are to put up a better fight.

Commentary

We are set to resume!

Right then! 186 to get in 300 balls, that is all that England need to go 1-0 in the series. Given their batting, it should be a walk in the park for them. Sri Lanka need Chameera to strike big and strike early if they are to make a game of it. Hasaranga has had a good game with the bat, but now his bowling is what matters. Will England chase it down? Or will Sri Lanka spring a surprise? We will find out. Do join us for the chase in a while.

England were right on the money from the very beginning. Woakes and Willey rocked the top order and had Sri Lanka on the mats. There was a nice partnership brewing but Woakes came back and broke that too. Wood bowled really well and went past the outside edge on numerous occasions but without any luck. Ali took the one wicket while Rashid had a tough day and was the most expensive bowler. Woakes was the pick of the bowlers as he took 4 wickets while Willey took 3. Towards the end, it was down to their fielding as there were a couple of run outs to finish things off.

Sri Lanka had a horror start with the bat. They were 46 for 3 at one point and a collapse seemed on the cards. But Perera and Hasaranga steadied the ship as they stitched a brilliant partnership of 99 runs. But Hasaranga fell at the wrong time while looking to up the ante. That triggered a collapse and Perera too fell soon while looking to score quick runs. After that, there wasn't much resistance by the lower order. They struggled to get runs on the board, the same way they struggled to communicate between the wickets. It was Karunaratne who helped the team reach a total of 185, as he was only the third batsman today to reach the double-figure mark. Overall, it was a very poor effort from them.

What a performance by England! They have been absolutely clinical and have restricted Sri Lanka to 185. They will be mighty pleased and would back their batsmen to chase it down. Sri Lanka had another tough game as their inexperienced batting order struggled big time.

42.31W

OUT! RUN OUT! Oh my word, that is incredible by Sam Billings! Length ball, on off. Chamika Karunaratne tucks it to the mid-wicket region. Sam Billings runs in from the fence, collects the ball and nails the throw at the bowler's end. The umpire knows that the batsman is out and raises his finger. Sri Lanka end at 185!

42.22

Fuller ball, on off. Pushed to long on. Moeen Ali is slow to get to the ball and the batters get back for the second.

42.16

Chris Woakes makes a loud appeal for LBW but the umpire is unmoved. Although, there is confusion amongst the English side if it hit the boots or the bat? They have a little chat but Eoin Morgan says no and they don't go for the review.

39.30

BEATEN! Full length ball, outside off, Dushmantha Chameera hangs his bat out, as he looks to defend it. The ball nips away a bit as it beats the outside edge.

However, Jonny Bairstow chases the ball and hits the stumps at the bowler's end. The English players are delighted, as the umpire takes it upstairs. Drinks Break! A good start for the hosts as they pegged back the Sri Lankan order cheaply. The bowlers would now look to pick a few quick wickets to get into the tail. For Sri Lanka, Kusal Perera remains the key as he has batted really well so far and would want to score a big one. Adil Rashid comes into the attack now to work his spin. Replacing Sam Curran.

Edged to get off the mark! Full and wide outside off. Dasun Shanaka surprisingly decides to go for it on his very first ball. He goes at it with his hands, but his feet are glued to the crease. The ball goes past the second slip and runs to third man for one. Just the 2 runs and the wicket from the over.

5.5W

OUT! TAKEN! The debut is not a good one for Charith Asalanka! David Willey drags his length just a bit and bowls it in the corridor of uncertainty. There is some extra bounce on that one, plus Charith Asalanka played it away from his body. So, all he gets is the outside edge. Joe Root takes a good catch to his left at first slip.

There are so many types of slower balls developed by fast bowlers. Chris Woakes is no exception. The ball on which Pathum Nissanka got out, was not far different from the normal balls he usually bowls. He did not roll his fingers over the seam nor did he change his wrist position. All he did was kept the seam upright and then covered it. And then, he just angled it in. Seems so easy to make and spot changes of pace but you can see the effort put in behind the same.

5.40

4.4W

OUT! TAKEN! That is a poor stroke by Pathum Nissanka! David Llyod calls it a 'cunning plan' on air! So, Chris Woakes bowls a nice slower one, it is also short in length and outside off. It deserves to be dispatched to the fence. Pathum Nissanka realizes this and goes for it, but he gets it off the toe end of the blade and Moeen Ali takes an easy catch at mid-wicket.

4.30

Length ball, around off. Pushed to covers now.

Great scenes at the Chester-le-Street before the start of the game. It is always a proud moment for a father to congratulate or commemorate his son's achievements, isn't it? Before the start of play, David Willey was handed a cap by his father, Peter Willey, in front of the entire squad. Is he making his debut, you ask? Oh no, folks. He is playing his 50th ODI. So the management decided to make it a bit special for both, father and son. Great gesture by the ECB.

BREAKING NEWS - Cricket fans would already be aware that Sri Lanka have decided to call back three players - Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella - for breaching player protocols. Add to it, Avishka Fernando is already ruled out due to an injury. But the hosts have some withdrawals as well. After the first T20I, Jos Buttler made himself unavailable for the entire white-leg tour, due to an injury and in the latest news, as confirmed by Michael Atherton on air, DAWID MALAN has withdrawn himself from the ODI squad, due to personal reasons. So today's game sees England a bit more bowling heavy.

2.40

Hello and a warm welcome to the first ODI between England and Sri Lanka. After a drubbing in the T20Is, Sri Lanka would be keen to get back to winning ways. But their recent form and team strength both are no match to England. The hosts go in as the firm favorites but anything can happen in cricket. Will England continue their dominance or will Sri Lanka spring a surprise? We will find out. Toss and teams in a bit.
