Commentary

That's a wrap to this game. We look forward to your company on Sunday for the last T20I in Kolkata. The action will begin at 7 pm local (1.30 pm GMT) but you can join us in advance for the build-up. Cheers!

HARSHAL PATEL (4-0-25-2) IS THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH! The debutant says that he was so engrossed in the process that he forgot to enjoy what's happening around but the feeling will sink in soon. Says that progress is gradual and slow and he had to build his game a lot as he was not exceptionally talented. Adds that with time, he found what works for him and built his own game. Feels that one does not need a lot of variations but one needs to execute the plans well. Mentions that he could not bowl those loopy slower balls in these conditions and that he would like to better his yorkers. Shares that he wants to do his processes right and enjoy all the success that comes his way.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, says that it has been a great effort from the entire unit. He adds that these were not easy conditions and credits his boys for their application and temperament out there in the middle. He says that they were under pressure at the start but they wanted just one wicket to put the brakes on and he had full faith in the quality of the spin bowlers in the team. Adds that playing for India, there is always pressure but says that his job on the field is to make the players comfortable. Mentions that everyone will get the opportunity but it is important to give the players who are now in the team some game time. He finally applauds Harshal Patel and says that he is happy for him that he has got the opportunity and has performed well in his debut game.

Tim Southee, the skipper of New Zealand, says that they got off to a great start but credits India by saying that they pulled back things nicely in the end. Adds that they had practised with the wet ball, they tried hard but says that India were too good. Tells us that they now will go to Kolkata and try to assess the conditions.

Presentation time...

KL Rahul, the top scorer for India, comes up for a chat. Says that they did well with the ball in the backend and pulled things back. Shares that they decided that the change in pace was the way to go. Adds that they played around with the field and were brave with the ball to restrict New Zealand to a below-par score. Mentions that he and Rohit Sharma give themselves a few overs to see what the pitch is doing and then decide the shot selection. States that they try to enjoy their batting and after the 10th over, they decided to cut loose and attack the bowlers. Further says that they try and see what is working best for them as a batting unit. Feels that they have a lot of firepower in the middle order and that gives the openers an extra cushion. On his partnership with Rohit and their key to success together, KL says that he enjoys batting with Rohit and is a big admirer of his batting. Tells us that they try to take the pressure off each other and he hopes to keep doing the same.

New Zealand fought well but again ended on the wrong side of the result. With the bat, they threw away the advantage after a fantastic Powerplay and only managed a below-par total. They only fetched 28 runs from the last 5 overs and this is something that cost them the most. Their bowling was decent, nothing extraordinary, as they failed to pick early wickets. The Kiwis did manage to gain some control in the first half of the chase with the ball but soon India attacked and everything went haywire for the tourists. Tim Southee was the only bowler who impressed with a 3-wicket haul as the rest struggled for control.

A clinical chase from India. They didn't go hammer and tongs at the start and concentrated on preserving the wickets. After the Powerplay, the Black Caps applied the choke and the required rate started to mount. But, Rohit Sharma decided to cut loose and soon, India were in full control of the chase. Both Rohit and KL Rahul played superbly and were once again involved in a century stand. Their knocks nearly put the chase to bed and despite losing a few quick wickets, the job done by the openers meant that the middle order could finish the game with plenty of balls to spare.

The Reign of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid kicks off with a series win! The Indian openers looked so elegant with the bat as they continued their sublime form to seal not just the game but also this T20I series. The Kiwi skipper, Tim Southee, was the only bowler who bowled as the conditions demanded and was rewarded with 3 wickets, but it was all too late for them. India won the match very comfortably with Pant finishing things off in style.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! Tim Southee has his team in a huddle and then leads New Zealand out on the field. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul walk out to bat for India. Tim Southee to start with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then! A target of 154 with the dew setting in should be something that India would back themselves to chase with ease. But, the Kiwi bowling attack is known to make a game of these lowish scores. Will they live to fight another day in the series? The chase will tell us. Do not go anywhere.

Harshal Patel (4-0-25-2) says that it's a great feeling to play for the country. Adds that this is a privilege for him and he is not going to take it for granted. Shares that Rahul Dravid, the coach of India, told him to express himself and enjoy the game. Tells that he has reached here after playing 9-10 years of domestic cricket and it's a satisfying moment for him.

A brilliant show by India with the ball. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar searched for swing in the first few overs and were hammered by the Kiwi openers. But once the Indian bowlers realized that pace off is the key on this surface, there was no looking back. They hit the hard lengths, used the cutters to strangle the Kiwi batters in the middle overs. Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin bowled 8 overs for just 45 runs and took a wicket each. Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were quite expensive but recovered well in the death overs. The pick of the bowlers though was debutant Harshal Patel. The pacer went for 25 and took 2 big wickets in his spell. Here he comes for a chat...

The Kiwis had a great start with the bat as they raced away in the Powerplay thanks to some brilliant hitting by Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell, and scored 64 runs. But after that, they went off the rails a bit. The cutters and the spin bowling of Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin were too much for them to deal with and they could not get the momentum that they would have liked. Glenn Phillips did get a start in the middle overs but none of the other batters supported him. In the end, they ended up scoring only 153 on a deck which is only going to get better with the falling dew.

A brilliant fightback by India! New Zealand had a flying start and it looked like 170 was on the cards, but once the Powerplay was done, it was all about India. The bowlers made things tough for the Kiwis and were rewarded with timely wickets. India would back themselves to chase it down.

We are set for the game to begin! The Indian team is in a huddle before spreading out on the field. Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell walk out to bat for New Zealand. Bhuvneshwar Kumar to start with the ball. Here we go...

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is down for a chat. He says that it felt good taking wickets in the last game and winning the game was even better. Adds that he has been bowling a lot lately and that has helped his rhythm too. Mentions that when he went back home for a few days, he bowled quite a bit as he did not want to be undercooked for the series.

Tim Southee, the skipper of New Zealand, says that they would have bowled first as well as there is a lot of dew already on the ground. Adds that they wanted to keep fighting and take it deep in the last game. Tells that they were certainly not at their best in the previous game but they are looking forward to this one. Informs that they have made three changes to their XI - Ish Sodhi, James Neesham and Adam Milne replace Todd Astle, Rachin Ravindra and Lockie Ferguson.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, says that chasing is a good option here due to the dew factor. Adds that the previous game was a good effort as the guys who finished the innings hadn't batted a lot in such situations. Admits that it got a bit too close towards the end but it is good to get a win. Says that they have a nice balance between youth and experience in the side and it is a good setup. Informs that Mohammed Siraj misses out due to his injury which he sustained in the last game and Harshal Patel comes in the side.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert (WK), James Neesham (In for Rachin Ravindra), Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee (C), Ish Sodhi (In for Todd Astle), Adam Milne (In for Lockie Ferguson), Trent Boult.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (WK), Venkatesh Iyer, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel (On debut) (In for Mohammed Siraj).

Toss - Rohit Sharma and Tim Southee are in the middle. Up goes the coin, Tim calls Heads but it has come down Tails. INDIA ELECT TO FIELD FIRST!

Pitch report - Deep Dasgupta is down for the pitch report. He says that the last time a T20 match was played here was the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2020 and the average score was 155. He talks about the dimensions of the ground and informs us that there are long boundaries. Ajit Agarkar also joins him and says that the surface looks abrasive and there is no grass here. He adds that the bowlers will use their cutters to trouble the batters. About the dew, Agarkar says that the team bowling first could get more from the surface and defending will be tough here. Also, they inform that the dew has already started to set in.

Breaking News - We have visuals from the Indian team huddle. Harshal Patel is getting his cap and the pacer is set to make his debut in T20Is! It will be interesting to see who he replaces in the side.

Earlier in the day, one of the greatest modern-day cricketers, AB de Villiers, announced his retirement from all forms of the game. There were plenty of heartwarming messages pouring in, but one which stood up the most was by his former South African teammate, Dale Steyn. 'And just like that, every bowler breathes a sigh of relief', is what the fiery pacer said and it sums up the career of ABD perfectly. From hitting the ball to all parts of the ground to enduring a blockathon while trying to save a Test, de Villiers could do it all. We thank him for all the countless memories that he gave us and wish him all the best for his off-field life. Farewell, ABD!

It’s a chance to seal the series and India will be looking to iron out their flaws and deliver a more clinical performance today. But can they do it against this motivated Kiwi side? It remains to be seen. Either way, the game promises to be an exciting one given the talent on show today. Stay tuned for the toss.

The new era for the Indian team began with a victory but not before some anxious moments in the death overs of the chase. The experienced duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin was brilliant for the Men in Blue and they would want their younger counterparts to contribute as well. But the perennial issue for India remains of a 6th bowling option and Venkatesh Iyer at this time remains favourite to fill that gap. The batting in the first game faltered away at the backend but the runs at the top of the order by Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were just about enough to get them over the line. Rishabh Pant came in at number 4 ahead of Shreyas Iyer in the last game and it remains to be seen if that is the right order for Pant or India are trying to use him as a floater.

New Zealand lost a close game in the first match of the series. But there were plenty of positives from the game for the Black Caps. They were without their charismatic skipper, Kane Williamson, but Mark Chapman played a fine knock in his absence at number 3. The only matter of concern for the Kiwis will be the form of the lower order but they have enough quality in their ranks to sort that out. Their bowling group, on the other hand, after starting on an expensive note, came back strongly despite the dew factor. Will they stick to the same set of bowlers or are we going to see Ish Sodhi in this match? New Zealand are a very disciplined outfit and have played well in crunch games recently. Can they get over the line tonight and level the series?

India and New Zealand are set to lock horns in a T20I again as this bilateral series now moves on to Ranchi. In the first game of the series, India managed to get over the line after some late hiccups. This game is another opportunity to fine-tune their performance and seal the series with a match to go. New Zealand, on the other hand, despite resting some of their key players fought till the end in the previous encounter and will be eyeing a series-leveling win tonight. With plenty of exciting action ahead, welcome to our coverage.
