Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratne continued from where they left off on Day 2 and the Lankans got off to a brisk start. Both Karunaratne and Mendis were playing their shots and looked at ease for a while. Although, Mendis perished on 54 and then the tourists lost wickets in quick succession. Karunaratne is leading from the front and he has shown some resistance against the Indian bowlers. For India, it was the spin-duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who got into the wickets column but Sri Lanka would be reasonably happy with the kind of fight they are showing on such a tricky pitch.

Sri Lanka have finally shown some intent with the bat in this series. The overnight batters, Kusal Mendis and skipper, Dimuth Karunaratne came out with good, positive intent of scoring runs and the tourists have managed to score 123 runs in the first session of Day 3, although, at the cost of three wickets.

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta and Murali Karthik are near the pitch. They say that there will be more turn for the spinners on Day 3 and the batters will need to apply themselves if they are to score some runs on this track. The sun is beating down and the pitch will get drier as the game progresses.

From what was seen in the first two days of this Test match, the first two sessions are dominated by spinners and looking at that, Ashwin, Jadeja and Patel will be expected to enjoy the session. Hello and a warm welcome to the action of Day 3 between India and Sri Lanka. What is called a moving day can prove to be the final day of the match. The equation is very simple, India need 9 wickets to win while Sri Lanka need 419 runs with an ample amount of time. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis played the tricky small period on Day 2 very nicely and did well to close the day without any more damage. They will look to have a positive opening hour while India will come out with full force and look to bundle the visitors out.

Right then! Here is the equation going into Day 3 of this Test - Sri Lanka need 419 runs to win while India require 9 wickets to win this Test as well as the series. Sri Lanka will need to bat out of their skins going ahead in this Test and India will look to make early inroads in the first session on Day 3 and keep the visitors at bay. Hanuma Vihari is up for a chat. He says the pitch was quite challenging but he thinks they batted well. Adds that their bowling was good as well and feels it will be hard for Sri Lanka and is confident that they will take the remaining wickets quickly. Tells that he should have batted with more patience and speaking about the pitch, he thinks in both the innings it was challenging. Mentions that he waited for a particular delivery to score on. Says that they had no plans of bowling in the final session but because they lost wickets, they had a go in the last 35-40 minutes.

Earlier in the day, it was Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin who wrapped things up quickly for India, and Sri Lanka were bowled out for their second-lowest total against India in Test cricket. They conceded a first innings lead of 143 runs and then it was onto their bowlers to make sure that they do not let the hosts run away with the game. Although, they weren't upto the mark as their bowlers were inconsistent and managed to keep things tight only for a while. Coming to India's batting - There were some good contributions from Rohit Sharma and Hanuma Vihari but India's youngsters, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer stole the show yet again. Both of them scored fifties and almost batted Sri Lanka out of this Test. Sri Lanka were set a target of 447 runs and they didn't get off to a great start as they lost their opener Lahiru Thirimanne for a duck. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami made the new ball talk yet again but Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis ensured that Sri Lanka do not lose any more wickets heading into Day 3.

Another enthralling day of this pink-ball Test comes to an end. Just like Day 1, Day 2 has also been all about India as Sri Lanka have been outplayed by a strong Indian side. The Lankans have a mountain to climb now and their batters have their task cut out going into Day 3. It were the spinners again for Sri Lanka who took the wickets but they allowed each batter to score quick runs. Their fielding was also very poor while two reviews that would have given them a positive decision were not taken, so the skipper's decision-making can also be questioned. They would hope to at least reduce the scoring rate and take the remaining wickets as soon as possible. The final session will start at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). See you there!

Sri Lanka managed to take 4 wickets in this session but it is the runs that hurt them. India added 138 runs in this session and now lead by 342. Rohit and Vihari were proactive and started looking for boundaries. Although, Rohit fell just 4 runs short of his fifty. Kohli came in to bat with intent but deja vu was written for him on the cards. It was then the Pant show. He has played each game as if it is a T20I so far but never fails to make an impact. Now, Iyer and Jadeja are out there and they will look to stretch the lead further.
