Ireland beat Afghanistan by 7 wickets (D/L method)

Civil Service Cricket Club, Stormont, Belfast

Right then. That's it from the coverage of this game. Andy Balbirnie is joined by his team-mates to begin the celebrations of winning the series. The squad poses for a picture with the trophy. A great day for Ireland cricket. Ireland now have a short break before they head out to Australia for the T20 World Cup in October. For Afghanistan though their next challenge isn't far away as they head down to UAE for the Asia Cup 2022. They will be competing in the opening fixture of the competition against Sri Lanka on 27th August, 2022. The first ball will be at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but you can join us for the build-up much sooner. Until then, take care and goodbye.

Andy Balbirnie, the victorious skipper is in for a chat. He says they had a long summer with results not going their way. Mentions he always believed if the side sticks to the plan a series win isn't that far away. Adds they have a really great group and it is good to see the squad getting bigger. Says that they knew they had to start pretty well and it is always tricky to chase such target. Praises the effort of George Dockrell throughout this series and confirms that he will be a huge part of the squad going forward. Further adds that this series win is a big one for this group. Nonetheless, they have a big challenge coming up in Australia in October and will focus on their training after a few days break. Ends by saying a few players from the group haven't been there yet. So its going to be exciting.

Mohammad Nabi, the skipper of Afghanistan, says that they cannot control the weather and it was a really good game in the end. Further says that they threw a few early wickets today and the guys are improving day by day. Further adds the DLS was a bit unfair to them. Says that batting and bowling are important and they need to improve day-by-day. Ends by saying they have enjoyed their stay in Ireland.

George Dockrell is adjudged as the Player of the Series for his incredible form with the blade throughout the series. In fact, he remains unbeaten throughout the series. He says that he is really enjoying the new role he has taken up this year. Adds that he is really happy to contribute to the side. Mentions that they are doing really well to execute their plans and hopefully they are able to continue in the same manner in the future.

Mark Adair wins the Man of the Match award for his exceptional spell with the ball. He says that it was a good game and it came out a bit lucky for them today. Further says that they always need to bowl good and give their best on the field. Mentions that it is always good to finish the series and win it.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

Earlier in the innings, after being put in to bat. Afghanistan did not start as they would've wanted too. They lost the cream of their batting order in quick succession. Usman Ghani was the only batter who added some impetus on the scoreboard. Afghanistan were 95/5 after 15 overs, before the rain gods decided to play its part. Later, after quite some delay, the target was revised to 56 and Ireland made sure to get over the line with two balls to spare.

The rain certainly ruined a spectacular game for us. Afghanistan would be a bit disappointed about the same but this is what the game of cricket is all about. Afghanistan came out on the field and put up a solid fight. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman did well to put some pressure on the batters but it was a bit too much to ask from them.

The rain delay put Ireland on the driving seat when they came out to chase 56 runs of 7 overs. Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie got off to a solid start, but both slipped out in quick succession. Later, George Dockrell and Harry Tector held their nerves and managed to get their side over the line.

It was always going to be an easy task for Ireland to chase down the revised target. The Afghans though did not let them breeze away and gave a run for their money with the limited overs in hand. In the end, it is Ireland who seal the series with a tally of 3-2.

... The Run Chase ...

Ireland started off pretty well thanks to an exceptional start with the ball by Mark Adair, he picked up three huge wickets to put Afganisthan at 26/3 inside the Powerplay. Ghani and Najibullah Zadran put 40 between them and they were looking good to settle before Joshua Little was brought back into the attack and took two wickets in quick succession to put his side back in front. Usman Ghani managed to pick up the pace of his innings but the rain gods interrupted the game at 15 overs. After quite a long waiting game, we are back for some cricketing action. Stay tuned for the chase...

UPDATE 10.55 pm IST (5.25 pm GMT) - Well, we come bearing some good news this time. So, as expected Afghanistan won't be coming back out to bat again. The Ireland batters will walk out to bat in a short while to chase down a revised target of 56 runs in just 7 overs.

UPDATE 10.40 pm IST (5.10 pm GMT) - The ground staff is working really hard to make the condtions suitable for playing. The covers are being peeled off now. Only the hover cover lies over the pitch now and even they are being taken off. Shouldn't be long before we get going. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE 10.18 pm IST (4.48 pm GMT) - The rain has completely stopped now. The Super Sopper is also out now trying to work its magic. The two umpire are closely inspecting the playing conditions. Hopefully, we get going shortly. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE 10.06 pm IST (4.36 pm GMT) - The conditions are slightly better now. The rain has reduced, although the covers are still on. The chances of Afghanistan coming out to bat again look slim. However, there is no official update out yet. Stay tuned...

Fortunately, there is some cricketing action that is going on at the moment, as even the England vs South Africa Test match ended prematurely on Day 1 due to rain early on. You can certainly switch tabs and catch some live action in the Women's Hundred. The Oval Invincibles Women are chasing a target of 113. They need 81 runs more in 77 balls to get over the line against Trent Rockets Women. Do not forget to keep an eye out for the updates here.

We are back and without losing any overs. Ireland players have made their way in the middle along with Azmatullah Omarzai and Usman Ghani. OH NO! Wait!!! The rain is back in a flash and so are the hover covers. The wait game continues here. Hopefully, it is just a passing shower. I guess I am wrong, it has started to pour down heavily and maybe it will be a long delay.

UPDATE 9.32 pm IST (4.02 pm GMT) - Some good news coming your way! The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off.  It shouldn't be long before we get going. Stay tuned.

UPDATE 9.12 pm IST (3.42 pm GMT) - Oh dear! It looks like the rain has gotten a bit heavier now and the umpires have asked the players to empty the field. The ground staff is out on the field to put the covers on. Hopefully, it is not a long delay. Stay tuned for further updates.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The decision of getting Josh Little back into the attack has done wonders for Ireland here. It is a quicker short ball, on the bodyline. Mohammad Nabi gets inside the line and looks to pull it away. It lobs off his gloves in front of the keeper. Lorcan Tucker realises that it won't carry and charges towards the ball. He dives forward with his right-hand stretched out and the ball sticks in his gloves. This is a brilliant catch from Lorcan Tucker. Ireland have their noses in front here.

Drinks! Ireland have started well with the ball here. They would hope that the last over from Simi Singh does not affect their progress here. They are right on top at the moment and would be looking to break this stand as soon as possible. Afghanistan though need their batters to focus on stitching big stands which can get them back in the game. An enticing passage of play awaits. Josh Little comes back into the attack now for Ireland to find some inspiration.
