New Zealand beat Ireland by 1 wicket

Malahide Cricket Club Ground, Dublin

Right then, that is all we have from this thrilling first ODI of this three-match ODI series! New Zealand go 1-0 up and they would be looking to seal the series in the second game that will be played on Tueday, 12th of July. It will start at 3.15 pm IST (9.45 am GMT). Our build-up though begins earlier. So do join us for the same. Till then, goodbye and cheers!

Tom Latham, the skipper of New Zealand, says that it is one of those games that when someone plays that kind of knock one need to appreciate that and it was a special innings. Tells that it is a difficult ground to defend scores but they lost wickets but luckily Michael Bracewell played brilliantly. Tells that Ferguson was brilliant with the ball and Irish batters batted well and he says that it is great to be part of such a special game.

Andy Balbirnie, the skipper of Ireland, says that it is a disappointed dressing room at the moment largely because they did everything right apart from winning the game. Adds that in the end, Michael Bracewell took the game away from them and it is a big shame that they ended up on the losing side having played brilliant cricket. Says that he is happy with the performance but they are on 1-0 down in the series which hurts a bit.

Michael Bracewell is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliank knock of 127 off just 82 balls! He says that he does not have words to describe this feeling at the moment. Tells that they had to rebuild and they got some partnerships in the end and then managed to take the game off from there. Says that they proud themselves to take the game deep and they managed to do that and that helped them win the game.

Presentation time...

Ireland would be wondering how they let this game slip. They did everything right till the final few overs. They were put into bat by the Kiwis and Ireland responded with a fine batting show as Tector notched up his first ODI century and middle-order did its job to perfection. The bowlers then continued that momentum and both seamers and spinners bowled quite well to keep the pressure on New Zealand right throughout the chase. Campher was especially exceptional and finished with three wickets. He even outbowled an experienced bowler like Lockie Ferguson who was brilliant with the ball for the Kiwis and took 2 wickets in this game. However, Ireland gave away way too many loose deliveries in the end and their most experienced bowler, Craig Young crumbled under pressure in the last over.

New Zealand had a stiff target to chase but they had a powerful batting line-up and on the ground with short boundaries, they would have fancied their top order to chase this down, They did chase it down eventually but it turned out to be quite dramatic. They kept losing wickets throughout this chase and it was Martin Guptill at the start who held things together and scored a good fifty. However, he too departed eventually as New Zealand were reduced to 120-5. Outwalked Michael Bracewell and started building partnership first a brief one with Glenn Phillips and then an important one with Sodhi and just when things looked out of New Zealand’s hands, he exploded at the death and smashed Irish bowlers all over the park. It still looked a distant target when Lockie Ferguson departed with 20 needed off the last over. Bracewell though had other plans and finished it off with some brilliant hitting.

Michael Bracewell...you beauty! He has pulled off a heist for New Zealand here! One of the best ODI knocks you will ever see. The Kiwis were almost down and out right throughout this chase but they just managed to hung in there and with 20 needed off the last over, Michael Bracewell just finsihed things off in style with one ball to spare! Ireland would be gutted here, they did almost everything right in this game but just could not keep their composure in the final few overs and have missed out on a golden opportunity to register their first ODI win against the Blackcaps!

DRINKS! New Zealand need 134 more from 102 balls but more importantly, they have only four wickets in hand. Ireland have been brilliant with the ball and have picked wickets at regular intervals to stay ahead in this game so far. New Zealand need Michael Bracewell to bat till the end and hope that others support him. Ireland are favourites to win from here but they still need to bowl well and get those four wickets to wrap this game up.

...THE RUN CHASE…

Right then, Ireland have put a good total on the board. However, they need to bowl well here as this is quite a high-scoring ground and Kiwis have some quality batters in their line-up. Can Ireland bowlers defend this total? We shall find out after the break. Stay tuned...

Harry Tector is down for a quick chat. He says all his family and friends are here so it is very special for him. Adds that his granny passed away last week so this is a bit of a joyous moment after the tragedy. Mentions that his celebration after getting his ton was more about relief and is happy to have performed for his team. Reckons that the start is always tricky but they have a decent score but will have to bowl well.

New Zealand will be disappointed with their bowling effort, especially after the start they got. Both Henry and Ferguson were brilliant with the new ball but Kiwi bowlers failed to maintain that pressure in the middle overs. Ferguson though kept his good work going in with the older ball as well compared to Henry who could not put much pressure after his first spell. The debutant, Glenn Phillips provided an important breakthrough by getting rid of Campher in his second over. Sodhi though was expensive and it was only at the back end that he and Blair Tickner came into their own and Ireland who were cruising at 241-4 were reduced to 253-7. Ferguson, Tickner and Sodhi all finished with 2 wickets each but they could not stop Ireland from reaching that 300-run mark.

Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie are two of the most experienced and important batters for Ireland. However, they were back in the hut quite early with Ireland struggling at 26-2 in the seventh over. Then came the resurgence as Harry Tector and Andy McBrine stitched together a steady stand of 60 runs to bring some solidity in the Irish innings. Andy McBrine departed but Tector continued and found the able partner in the form of Curtis Campher. The duo put together a brisk and very effective stand of 94 before Campher departed. Tector though was in no mood to let this opportunity go as he notched up his first ODI century and along with Tucker lifted the scoring rate quite swiftly. There was a mini-collapse towards the end but Simi Singh and George Dockrell ensured that runs kept coming and Ireland have eventually managed a very good total here.

A very fine batting effort from Ireland! They have managed to reach 300 here and they will take this with both hands especially after losing some early wickets. The pitch though is very good and New Zealand will fancy their chances of chasing this total down. It is upto the Irish bowlers now to back up this good work by their batters and it’s surely is game on here at Malahide.

We are done with the national anthems now! The two on-field umpires make their way out to the middle. New Zealand players also stride out to the middle. Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling are the openers for Ireland. Matt Henry has a brand new ball in his hand. Paul Stirling will take the strike and with two slips in place, Matt Henry comes charging in. Here we go...

The players from both sides are making their way out to the middle for the national anthems. It will be New Zealand's first and will be followed by the anthem of the home side, Ireland.

Kyle McCallan is down for the pitch report. He says that it is a typical Malahide pitch with a tinge of green on it. The pitch is a bit tacky underneath and there's some moisture over it. Mentions that the captain winning the toss will look to bowl first as there will be early help for the seamers.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Martin Guptill, Finn Allen, Will Young, Tom Latham (C) (WK), Glenn Phillips, Henry Nicholls, Matt Henry, Michael Bracewell, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Lockie Ferguson.

Ireland (Playing XI) - Andy Balbirnie (C), Paul Stirling, Andy McBrine, Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, Lorcan Tucker (WK), George Dockrell, Simi Singh, Mark Adair, Craig Young, Josh Little.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favour of Tom Latham. New Zealand have elected to BOWL first.

Ireland have a settled team and they have shown already that they can go shoulder to shoulder with the big boys and now it's just a matter of doing that exact thing for a prolonged period of time. The hosts do well in T20Is but will need to be more patient when it comes to the 50-over format if they want to snatch a game or two off the Kiwis. Will the home side be able to use the conditions in their favor? Or will New Zealand prove to be just too strong an opposition for them? We'll find out. Toss and team news in a bit.
