Right then. That's it from the coverage of this game. The Proteas have a take a 1-0 lead in this two-match T20I series. These two will cross swords again in the final game of the series on 5th August, 2022. The first ball will be bowled at 11 pm IST (5.30 pm GMT). But as you all know you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye.

Keshav Maharaj, the victorious stand-in skipper is in for a chat. He says that David Miller woke up with a niggle and he was unable to take the field today. Says the boys played well and the win is the cherry on the top. Admits that the reserve players are performing well as they did against England as well and this will only prove to be a headache for the coaches. He says that they knew they had a good total on the board but Lorcan Tucker and George Dockrell played really well. Credits the bowlers for doing well to restrict Ireland towards the end. Says they will be taking rest the following day.

Andy Balbirnie, the Ireland skipper, is in for a chat. He starts by saying in T20I games these days 200 is expected to be chased down. Feels they were in the game for a long but losing two set batters on consecutive deliveries took the game away from them. Says that they have proven to perform well against these top side but it only depends on how they close these games and hopes they are able to change their fortune by levelling the series.

Reeza Hendricks wins the PLAYER OF THE MATCH award for his incredible knock. He says that he has been working really hard for weeks and even years and that is helping him at this moment. He agrees to the fact that he is enjoying the English conditions. Says that they lost a couple of wickets early and Aiden Markram played really well to support him and set up the game. Admits that there is a lot of quality on the sidelines and it is good to see the players taking their chances.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

Earlier in the innings, South African innings was led by Reeza Hendricks with his fourth half-century on the trot in T20Is. He found a great partner in Aiden Markram and they managed to stable the ship for the side. Later, some hard-hitting of Tristan Stubbs and Dwaine Pretorius helped them to set a target of 212. During the chase, Ireland were in the game for a long time, but losing George Dockrell and Lorcan Tucker in quick succession took the game away from them.

It is the death bowlers that have managed to seal the game for South Africa here. Taking nothing away from the two spinners, who worked in tandem in the middle to tighten the screws but the way the seamers ended this innings was just outstanding. Wayne Parnell nailed five yorkers in the final over before getting smacked for a maximum, while Lungi Ngidi dominated with his slower balls. Tabraiz Shamsi, Wayne Parnell and Keshav Maharaj picked up a brace each, while the rest of the bowlers took a wicket apiece.

Chasing 200 and above always gets tricky in the shortest format of the game, although Ireland put up a fight right till the end. Both their openers departed inside the Powerplay after getting starts. The chances looked bleak after Tector slipped out on a timid score. It seems like Lorcan Tucker might be loving his new role at number 3 as he smacked 78 runs. He along with George Dockrell stitched a 86-run stand at the rate of knots. The Irish looked to be back on track but these two batters fell is quick succession which put them on the back foot yet again. It was tough ask for the tail-enders and they crumbled under the impressive death bowling of the Proteas.

Wow! This was a feast to be honest. A great game of cricket overall. South Africa did come out victorious but Ireland gave them a run for their money.

Commentary

We are back. South Africa players take the field. Followed by Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie who walk out to open for Ireland. Keshav Maharaj to start with the new ball.

... The Run Chase ...

Right then. Ireland need to chase down another target that surpasses the 200-run mark. They got close to achieve the same against India. Will they be able to get over the line successfully here? We shall find out soon. Do join us for the chase on the other side.

Reeza Hendricks is in for a chat. He starts by saying he definiately enjoyed his innings. Mentions he was well supported by Aiden. Says it was nice with the new ball but they had to adapt as the match progressed. Adds that they were looking 220 plus but the wicket was a touch slow and thinks 211 is enough. Ends by saying he is surely backing his bowlers to defend the total.

Ireland were good in patches but over all lacked a bit of discipline. They would have been looking to keep it tight and restrict South Africa to a reasonable target. After sending back Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen on timid score, they would have hoped to do much better. However, their bowlers could not maintain the pressure and let South Africa off the hook. Gareth Delaney was the pick of the bowlers getting the two set batters in consecutive deliveries. Other than that there was not much for the Irish fans to cheer about.

South Africa started a bit watchful and looked to analyse the wicket after electing to bat first. That did not last long as Reeza Hendricks, who has been in the form of his life, got going very soon after. South Africa lost two wickets in the Powerplay but once the partnership between Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Makaram started flourishing, runs started flowing far too freely. Reeza Hendricks reached his fourth consecutive half-century in T20Is and Aiden Makaram got his fifty in just 25 deliveries. They shared a 118-run partnership after which both departed on consecutive deliveries. Later, Tristan Stubbs and Dwaine Pretorius applied the finishing touches.

This has been quite a batting display from a South Africa and they have posted a commanding total of 211 on the board. The partnership between Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markaram was the key as it set up a perfect platform for the hitters to take them over the 200 mark. Ireland have an uphill task ahead of them.

Right then, both the teams stride out to the middle of the ground and get lined-up for the national anthems. It will South Africa's first followed by Ireland. Done with all the pre-match proceedings. Ireland players are seen to be in a huddle before they break out to their respective positions. Followed by Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock who walk out to open for South Africa. Mark Adair to start with the new ball. Here we go...

So, David Miller has been ruled out of the game with a lower back muscle spasm and it will be Keshav Maharaj to act as a stand-in skipper for the first match of this T20I series. Also, it is surprising to not see Rilee Rossouw in the starting XI after an impressive outing against England lately. Mostly, the Proteas are trying out some different combinations with the T20 World Cup just around the corner. They will also be without Kagiso Rabada due to an ankle injury.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Tristan Stubbs, Dwaine Pretorius, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj (C), Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Ireland (Playing XI) - Paul Stirling, Andy Balbirnie (C), Lorcan Tucker (WK), Harry Tector, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Curtis Campher, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Andy McBrine, Josh Little.

TOSS - The coin is flipped into the air and it falls in favor of South Africa. They have elected to BAT first.

Ireland have put on some strong performances all through the summer without actually getting over the line. They have played New Zealand and India quite recently, putting up a good fight but kept stumbling as their inexperience would come to the forefront. They have a young side under the leadership of Andy Balbirnie and they have a lot of talent at their disposal. It is only a matter of time before they get a complete performance to upset one of the big guns of cricket. Will it be today? Stay tuned for the toss in a bit…
