That's all we have from this game. We will be back for the second ODI on Tuesday, 13th July at 11 am local (10 am GMT). The venue remains the same in Dublin but the weather forecast is much better. You can join us in advance for the build-up. Till then, goodbye and cheers!

To give you a glimpse of this match - Ireland did exceedingly well in reply to South African's pace attack. They did start slow at the beginning but wickets in their bag meant they could accelerate and that is what exactly happened after the umpires decided to have a 43-overs-per-side game with regular rain interruptions. The Proteas bowling department looked a bit rusty and would be aiming to get better in the next game. Ireland will be more disappointed at the moment as they had a real shot at this game after an impressive batting show. The Irish would count the batting form of Andy Balbirnie and William Porterfield as positives as they target the second ODI.

Update 5.13 pm local (4.13 pm GMT) - MATCH ABANDONED! There's the official confirmation. An unfortunate end to this contest.

Update 5.02 pm local (4.02 pm GMT) - Tick...Tock...Tick...Tock... It's a race against time now! Another 28 minutes left for the cut-off time. Not looking good for a resumption, to be honest. The umpires are seen strolling around the playing area. We are waiting for the official words. Stay tuned...

Update 4.41 pm local (3.41 pm GMT) - Not just you, folks...even we are waiting for any fresh updates. Haven't heard from the announcer on the ground for some time now. All we can hear is the noise of raindrops. Yup, it's still raining and the covers continue to be in place. The play needs to resume by 5.30 pm local for a 20-over contest is what we can inform you at this stage. Let's see what is in store for us.

Update 4.03 pm local (3.03 pm GMT) - The rain continues to pour down as we wait for the revised target for South Africa. The conditions at the moment are looking very gloomy. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope to have more action soon.

Coming from a completely different condition in West Indies, the South African bowlers looked a bit rusty. They took time in finding their rhythm and since Ireland had adopted an overcautious approach, it allowed them to settle down. The expectation was that the tourists will dominate the Irish batsmen so on that count they disappointed. Still, all the bowlers did a decent job, especially the spinners, to keep the run rate in check.

Ireland had done a great job till the 35th over to prepare a platform for themselves for the final overs. This was when the rain arrived and interrupted the game. After some delay, we got underway again with the match reduced to a 43-over-per-side and the hosts decided to cut loose. They managed to amass 50 runs after the break, off 32 balls and were looking set to have a big finish when the rain returned and put a full stop to their innings.

The South African speedsters with the new balls, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, failed to hit the right lengths initially. They were too much on the shorter side and that allowed the Irish openers some breathing space upfront. The pair of William Porterfield and Paul Stirling adopted the watchful approach in Powerplay 1 and concentrated on preserving wickets more than scoring runs. Paul batted against his natural self but soon got impatient and threw his wicket away. After that, the present and past skippers joined forces to stitch an 87-run stand, a record for any wicket for Ireland against South Africa in ODIs, and that propelled the Irish innings. Porterfield announced his arrival to form with a fine fifty but soon got out.

The on-air commentators have informed that this indeed is the END OF THE INNINGS FOR IRELAND. They won't be batting anymore and we will have to wait to know the revised target for South Africa as per the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method. Meanwhile, let's summarize Ireland's batting innings. The overhead conditions looked very scary at the start and Ireland ended up losing the toss. They were invited to bat first and many would have predicted that they will fold up quickly in front of the South African bowling attack. That didn't happen though.

Update 3.41 pm local (2.41 pm GMT) - Oh no, COVERS ARE COMING ON! The umpires tried their best to stay but the rain started to fall really hard and they had no other option but to take the players off the field. Ireland were going along nicely and would be disappointed as this break has disrupted their late flourish. They will benefit a bit from the DLS revised score but would have loved to bat their full quota to get more top-ups to their final score.

Run out chance? On a length around leg, Adair looks to work it on the leg side but is late into his shot. The ball goes off the toe end of the bat onto his pads. Dockrell calls for a single and gets it comfortably as the bowler tries to kick it onto the stumps at the striker's end but fails.

OUT! TAKEN! Rabada comes back into the attack and gets a wicket off his first ball. Balbirnie was standing down the leg side, Rabada follows him and bowls full, Andy Balbirnie chips it straight into the hands of Tabraiz Shamsi at mid-wicket. He has to depart after playing a really good knock. Ireland would have liked to have him there in the middle till the end but he has to walk back to the shed.

A length delivery outside off, it's steered through point. Takes a single off the last ball and retains strike, not what Ireland would want at this stage.

35.50

Well bowled! Andile once again is on the shorter side outside off, slower in pace, Harry is early into his pull shot and misses.

35.40

Two dots now. Short again, cut again and once again it finds the point fielder. Tector needs to do better than that at this stage.

35.30

Short and wide outside off, Harry cuts but finds the point fielder.

35.21

Digs in a short ball on off, Andy pulls it to deep square leg for a run.

35.11

Full length ball on middle, it's flicked through square leg for a single.

Right then, the South African players have gathered near the boundary line. We can hear the noise of thunder as the umpires lead the players on the field. Powerplay 3 is signalled now. One extra fielder, i.e. 5 can now be put outside the 30-yard circle till the end of this inning. Andile Phehlukwayo to bowl after the break.

Update 3 pm local (2 pm GMT) - Big cheer from the crowd as the covers come off! As per the announcement made on the ground, the game is now set to resume at 3:15 pm local time. It's now reduced to a 43-overs-per-side game. Revised playing conditions - Three bowlers can bowl a maximum of 9 overs and two can bowl a maximum of 8. Let's hope there is no more rain and we get going this time around. The South African players are already out, warming up. Things have certainly brightened up in the last 10 minutes or so.

Update 2.43 pm local (1.43 pm GMT) - Sorry for bringing you bad news! It appears that the rain has returned as we can see plenty of drops on the camera lens. The covers stay where they were a few minutes back. Very little movement on the ground. The resumption time came and went, and our wait continues.

Update 2.32 pm local (1.32 pm GMT) - We have an official update from the ground. The match is set to resume in another 8 minutes and it's now a 47-over-per-side, provided the rain stays away. As per the revised playing conditions, two South African bowlers can bowl 10 overs while three can bowl 9.

Update 1422 local (1322 GMT) - The covers continue to be on but there are a few groundsmen near the playing area. Maybe, the intensity of rain has reduced a bit. Super Soppers are doing their rounds. Stay tuned for more updates...

Update 1404 local (1304 GMT) - COVERS ARE ON! The rain has picked up its intensity and the players have left the field. The whole playing area is covered. It was drizzling for quite some time and we were lucky that the umpires carried on with the game. Let's stay positive and hope that the action resumes quickly.

Drinks break. 15 overs left in the innings and now Ireland will have to press on the accelerator. Their watchful approach has taken them to a stage where they have 8 wickets in hand and can really go after the bowlers. Skipper Andy Balbirnie has got his eye in and he should look to stay till the end and anchor this innings. Also, the rain is in the air so the hosts will have to concentrate now on improving their run rate to benefit from the DLS revised equation.

NOT OUT! Loopy ball on middle, Andy Balbirnie goes for the sweep but fails to connect. The ball gets hit on his front pad. Maharaj and the South African fielders appeal for an LBW but the umpire shakes his head. Meanwhile, Andy Balbirnie seems to be hurt here. The physio has been called. The replays show that the ball bounced and hit him on the throat. After getting some treatment and a good amount of delay, we are seeing the umpire signalling for the DRS on South Africa's demand. Maybe, they demanded it earlier but the umpire waited for the player to get treated. Anyway, the Ultra Edge confirms there is a spike as the ball passes the bat and a top edge had hit Andy on his throat. Would have been a really painful blow. The on-field decision stays and South Africa lose a review.

Lungi Ngidi is back into the attack.

DRS taken! A late decision to take the referral as everyone was busy looking at Andy Balbirnie's well being.

The players of Ireland are wearing black armbands following the passing of former Malahide Cricket Club President Evelyn Harmon.

30.50

Full again, on middle. Tector nudges it softly towards mid-wicket.

30.40

Touch fuller and on off, Tector defends it towards covers off the front foot.

30.30

Short and on off, Tector works it off the inner half of his bat towards square leg.

Harry Tector is in next to bat at number 4.

DRS time! There is a shout for a catch. The umpire has not given it and South Africa take the review. They are looking very confident. It seems that William Porterfield has gloved it.

30.2W

OUT! Porterfield has gloved it! Shamsi has a wicket and he is ecstatic. The 87-run stand is broken and if we can say - the devil's number strike. Shamsi serves a flighted delivery and lands it full outside off, William Porterfield brings out the reverse sweep but fails to nail it. It lobs off his hands and loops over the keeper. Aiden Markram shows good awareness at slip to move across to his right and catch the ball. They appeal and then start to celebrate. Shamsi is surprised that the umpire has not given it. Temba Bavuma takes the DRS and the Ultra Edge detects a spike as the ball goes past the gloves. William departs after playing himself into form. A good gutsy knock by him.

Fine shot by Stirling. A length delivery outside off, Stirling drives it on the up with excellent timing. The cover fielder though does well to dive to his right and take the pace off the ball. He palms it away towards the fielder to his right who had started to run out of the circle in anticipation. This allowed the batsmen to cross.

Ngidi delivers a full ball on the pads, Porterfield helps it gently in front of square leg for one.

3.41lb

Pacy delivery, full and drifting down the leg side, Stirling is late in his flick shot and it goes off his pads to fine leg. They cross for a leg bye.

Some sawdust applied to the bowler's landing area. A gully is positioned now by Bavuma.

2.50

Identical to the last delivery, around off and leaving the batsman with some seam movement, Porterfield offers no shot.

2.44

EDGED AND FOUR! First boundary of the morning. Rabada delivers it on a good length around off, shaping away a bit, Porterfield is squared up a bit in defense and edges it wide of Markram at second slip for a boundary. South Africa should look to get the third slip here.

Shortish and on off, angling away again, Porterfield stands back and withdraws his bat at the last moment. A quiet but decent start from Ireland.

1.50

A better line from Ngidi this time. Angles across a good length ball in the zone outside off, William remains on the back foot and leaves it. The length needs to be a tad bit fuller here.

1.42

A length delivery on the leg stump line, William tickles it through backward square leg for another couple of runs.

1.32

It has started to rain again. The umpires are staying though.

0.50

Big movement this time but it's after going past the batsman. On a length and outside off, nipping away, William leaves and Kyle Verreynne does well to gather it with a dive to his left.

0.10

Time to get going! The South African team is in a huddle near the fence as the umpires stride out to the centre. Paul Stirling and William Porterfield are the openers for Ireland. It's going to be challenging for these two under these conditions. The players from both teams take a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. It's Kagiso Rabada to speed in first up with the first new ball. Here we go, two slips waiting...

Andy Balbirnie, the Irish skipper, says that there is a lot to play for and it's a great opportunity for them. Tells that they would have loved to bowl first but feels that it's a good chance for their batsmen to score some runs against a quality bowling attack. Informs that Porterfield is fit and he had a full squad to pick his XI.

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa, says that it's nice to win the toss for a change and they want to exploit the conditions. Hopes to restrict the Irish team to a gettable total. Tells that they want to play their best game and test themselves in these conditions. Informs that Keshav Maharaja and Tabraiz Shamsi are playing, while Anrich is not fit and de Kock has been rested.

Pitch report - Blustery conditions. The pitch here is generally good for batting. The spinners don't get much but the pacers will have good bounce and carry. The first few overs will be tricky for the batsmen but after that it will be good for batting.

Ireland (Playing XI) - Paul Stirling, William Porterfield, Andrew Balbirnie (C), Harry Tector, George Dockrell, Lorcan Tucker (WK), Andy McBrine, Simi Singh, Joshua Little, Craig Young, Mark Adair.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Aiden Markram, Janneman Malan, Temba Bavuma (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne (WK), David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi.

Toss time at Malahide! Both the captains are out in the middle. Andy Balbirnie gives it a good toss, Temba Bavuma calls it correctly and SOUTH AFRICA ELECT TO FIELD! The big news is that Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje have been rested for this game.

Good signs! The rain has completely stopped and the groundsmen have removed the covers entirely. The conditions though remain heavily overcast. We can see the players out on the field, they are going through their warm-up drills. A few spectators have also come to watch this match. Stay tuned, toss is coming up shortly.

Update 9:36 am GMT (10:36 am local) - More good news coming our way. RAIN HAS STOPPED! The toss is now scheduled to take place at 11 am local with the first ball to be bowled 30 minutes after that. Let's hope the weather holds up well from here on.

Update 9:27 am GMT (10:27 am local) - It's no rocket science, we already knew the TOSS WILL BE DELAYED. But the promising news is that it has been delayed by only 30 minutes and will now take place at 10.45 AM, as per Cricket Ireland. Stay tuned for more such updates...

Update 9.03 am GMT (10.03 am local) -The worst fears of a cricket fan have come true. IT'S RAINING, tweets the official handle of Cricket South Africa.

Weather report - If you ask locals in Ireland, they will tell you that the only real constant in their climate is rain. The weather in this part of the world has always been a concern. If the radar is to be trusted, there is a 70 per cent chance of rain on Sunday. Let's hope it's not true and we get a full game without many interruptions.

Ireland are a team that has not performed too well in the recent past. They lost the series against Afghanistan and Netherlands, too, defeated them in their latest series. The Irish are still trying to figure out a settled team and the performance of the senior players, barring Paul Stirling, has been on the decline. This series is going to be a test of character and skills for them and let's see how they respond.

The Proteas would be gung-ho after their recent success in the T20I series against the world champions West Indies and would look to carry that momentum further. They have arrived in Ireland with a full-strength squad and expect them to field their best XI. Temba Bavuma finally seems to be adjusting into his captaincy role and along with Mark Boucher, this pair would be aiming to bring back the glory days of South Africa.

A warm welcome to everyone for the first ODI between Ireland and South Africa in Dublin. This series is a great opportunity for both these teams to improve their standings in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League. The Saffas are lying at the bottom currently after playing just three ODIs and would be eyeing maximum points at Ireland's cost. For the Irish, every international game against a big nation is a chance to test themselves and they too will have crucial Super League points in mind. Plenty on the line and let's hope to have a cracking contest.
