Commentary

Right then! After two legs of the competitions and plenty of entertainment, we are set for the final act of the Indian T20 League 2021. Two captains who are known to keep their cool under pressure will lead their teams on the field for the finale on 15th October 2021. Chennai and Kolkata will battle out for 40 overs to lift the dazzling trophy but only one team will get their hands on it. The final will begin at 6 pm Local (2 pm GMT). Make sure you join us for the grand finale of what has been an exciting competition! See you there. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Venkatesh Iyer is the Player of the Match. He says that he is doing what he has been asked to do and is very happy to get this win. Adds that he is just enjoying his time here and he is doing nothing different from Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and first-class cricket. Tells that he wanted to bat well with Shubman Gill and credits him by saying that he is an exquisite stroke-maker. Signs off by saying that he is fully focused on the next game now and he is not thinking about the T20 World Cup just yet.

Eoin Morgan, the skipper of Kolkata is down for a chat. He says they will dissect what happened in the death overs. Adds that the openers gave them a brilliant start and they are over the line and that is what matters. Says that Delhi are a very good side and fought hard. Credits Rahul Tripathi for stepping up to the task and getting them over the line. Informs that it is pleasing to see guys like Venkatesh Iyer, Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi batting the way they have. Says that they always had the belief even when they were struggling back in India. Informs that Iyer was brought in the XI by the coach and is glad that it turned out well. Morgan adds that Chennai are one of the best teams in the league but anything can happen in the final.

Stay tuned for the presentation to hear from the Player of the Match and the winning skipper, Eoin Morgan.

Rahul Tripathi is down for a chat, he says that it feels great to finish the game. Adds that he never thought it would go so deep but he is glad to finish the game. Says that he wanted to face the last two balls to hit a six but he was also open to taking a couple of runs. Further adds that it has been a great journey for them in the UAE leg and the positive approach has helped them a lot.

Rishabh Pant, the skipper of Delhi, says that there are no words to express how he is feelingnow. Adds that they tried to keep things tight but unfortunately they were not able to get over the line. Credits Kolkata's bowlers by saying that they bowled really well in the middle overs. Tells that they will look to come back strong in the next season. Signs off by saying that they learn from each other, back each other and would be looking to comeback harder in the next season.

Delhi did not have the biggest of totals but a couple of early wickets would have put them in a good position but that did not happen as Kolkata had a great start. The first wicket came in 13th over when Kagiso Rabada sent back Venkatesh Iyer. Avesh Khan and Anrich Nortje took a wicket each after that but even then the game looked like it was over. But things changed in the last 3 overs. Kagiso Rabada bowled a brilliant 18th over when he gave only 1 run and took a big wicket. Then, Anrich Nortje gave only 3 runs in the 19th over and took a wicket. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled the final over. He took 2 wickets and left Kolkata needing 6 runs in the last 2 balls. But it was a heartbreak for Delhi when Rahul Tripathi hit that six. Delhi would be disappointed though. They finished at the top of the table but lost two games in the playoffs under pressure.

It wasn't a big target for Kolkata but the pressure of the moment could have gotten to them but they didn't allow it at the start. The pair of Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gil simply deflated the bowling lineup of Delhi. Iyer was the aggressor and made sure that the required rate did not get out of control while Gill made sure that he rotated the strike well. Iyer got to his fifty but fell soon after. But by then, it looked like the game was done and Kolkata looked set to get over the line. But the wicket of Gill when he was on 46 was a big moment. The batters coming in after that struggled to get off the mark on this sluggish surface and they almost threw it away. From 123 for 1 they found themselves at 129 for 5 needing 7 runs in the last over. They even lost two wickets in the last over and things looked bleak for them but Rahul Tripathi sent the fifth ball sailing over the fence to get them over the line.

We have our finalists! Kolkata will take on Chennai and one of these teams will lift the trophy in Dubai! What a turnaround this has been by Kolkata. They were cruising at one stage, then they collapsed towards the death overs and looked out of it but they have managed to get over the line. This game had us on the edge of our seats in the last few overs. Delhi gave it their all in the last few overs and would have felt that they would win it but Kolkata got over the line. Phew, what a game that was!

Commentary

We are set for Kolkata's reply! Rishabh Pant and his men are in a huddle before striding out to the middle. Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill are the opening batters for Kolkata. Anrich Nortje to start with the ball.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then. The Kolkata bowlers have done their job. Now, the onus is on their batters to chase down the target and book the last spot in the finale. Kolkata have chased every game successfully in the UAE leg and would hope there are no changes in fortune. Will they get through to the final or will Kagiso Rabada and co do their magic on this track? Stay with us to find out.

Shivam Mavi is up for a quick chat. He says that it is a chaseable score as there is some dew on the field. Adds that they have a fair idea of how to bowl on these kinds of pitches as they have played few games here previously. Signs off by saying that the team that plays well in the second innings will end up winning the game.

It was a good show by Kolkata. Their bowlers and bowled good lines and lengths throughout. They made it difficult for the opposition to score freely. Varun Chakravarthy was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up two wickets. He could have his third wicket but it turned out to be a no ball. Lockie Ferguson and Shivam Mavi took a wicket each but were expensive in their last overs. But overall, Kolkata would be satisfied with their show with the ball.

The Delhi batters fought hard from the start. Prithvi Shaw was on the attack from the word go, while Shikhar Dhawan was still finding his rhythm. Once Shaw fell, Dhawan and Marcus Stoinis kept the scoreboard ticking without getting many boundaries but they both lost their way in the middle. Rishabh Pant too could not make an impact with the blade. Then came a stand between Shreyas Iyer and Shimron Hetmyer who smacked some crucial runs at the fag end of the innings. Hetmyer was caught once but it turned out to be a no ball. The southpaw hit a couple of maximums after that but could not finish on a high. Iyer though made sure that he batted till the end. They got 15 runs in the last over and have put on a challenging total.

How one evaluates the first innings would depend on one's point of view. We all know how difficult it is to score runs in Sharjah. The Delhi batters though kept their nerves and made sure they keep the runs ticking. Kolkata, on the other hand, their bowlers were on the money yet again. They kept things tight and kept chipping wickets at regular intervals.

Rishabh Pant, the skipper of Delhi, says that they would have bowled first too but there is no point in thinking over the toss too much. Informs Marcus Stoinis comes in for Tom Curran. Ends by saying that the players are in the right frame of mind and hopes that the guys enjoy out on the field.

Eoin Morgan, the skipper of Kolkata, says that they will bowl first. Mentions they have played a couple of games in Sharjah and that has worked for them before. Adds, there are no changes to the side. Also says, he hopes there is a bit of an advantage with them, but against this Delhi side, it should be a test. Mentions in the UAE leg, his players have played with fire and have put on a great show.

Kolkata (Unchanged Playing XI) - Shubman Gill, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan (C), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Sunil Narine, Shakib Al Hasan, Lockie Ferguson, Shivam Mavi, Varun Chakravarthy.

Delhi (Playing XI) - Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (C/WK), Marcus Stoinis (In for Tom Curran), Shimron Hetmyer, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Avesh Khan, Anrich Nortje.

TOSS UPDATE - Eoin Morgan and Rishabh Pant are at the middle for the all-important toss. The coin lands in favour of Morgan and Kolkata have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Bishop is down for the pitch report. He says that it is very pleasant and cool out there. Adds that the highest score on this surface is 156 and it was made by Bangalore, but teams after that have not been able to cross 132. Matthew Hayden says that batting here should be a mix of playing fearlessly and sensibly. Adds that scoring 50 runs in the Powerplay is what the batters should target. Says that spinners will play a big role in this game and it will get challenging to score runs once the ball gets old.

Kolkata have been the comeback kings of the season and they are familiar with the Sharjah conditions, as they ended Bangalore’s hunt in the Eliminator. Kolkata have also won all the games while chasing in UAE and would likely hope to repeat that if they chase here again. In their last game, Sunil Narine was back to his best form and caused a lot of trouble to the opposition with both the bat and the ball. Also, on paper, it looks like they have a deep batting lineup, which was seen in their last game when Shakib Al Hasan and Eoin Morgan kept their calm and got Kolkata over the line.

Delhi reached the finals for the first time last season in 2020. But they could not get over the line against Mumbai. Although, they have been a dominant side in this season of the Indian T20 League. They topped the league stage with 20 points and would be eager to move an inch closer to their maiden trophy win. Although, Delhi are coming into this game on the back of two consecutive defeats. They still remain a very strong team.

Hello and a warm welcome to all! It is time for Qualifier 2 in the Indian T20 League. In this game, Delhi will be locking horns against Kolkata. With Qualifier 2 comes the pressure and the fear of not being able to notch the last ticket to the final. Delhi had an opportunity to make it to the finale but they slipped against Chennai which is why they feature in this game. Kolkata, on the other hand, have certainly revived in the UAE leg of the competition. No one would have thought they would make it so far, but they have beaten all the odds. This game should be no less than a cracker. Stay tuned for toss and team updates.
