Pakistan beat Netherlands by 16 runs

Hazelaarweg, Rotterdam

That's all we have from this entertaining game. The second ODI is on Thursday, 18th August at 2.30 pm IST (9 am GMT). Do join us in advance for the build-up. Cheers!

Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, says that they are relieved to get the win and credits the Netherlands for their fight. He calls Fakhar's knock lovely as the pitch was two-paced. Mentions that they took time to build a partnership. Admits that they should have done better with the ball. Tells that he loves to play here as the conditions are challenging.

Scott Edwards, the captain of the Netherlands, says that it hurts to lose another game but feels they are getting closer. Regrets dropping catches and praises the knock of Fakhar Zaman. Mentions that the pitch suited the home team. He is happy with the way they batted and feels that the overs at the backend with the ball cost them. States that they let themselves down in the field after showing improvement in the recent past. He is happy with the bowling performance of Bas de Leede.

Player of the Match is Fakhar Zaman (109). He calls it his lucky day and tells that the wicket was not easy. Praises the Dutch team for their bowling. Feels that they should have done better and credits Netherlands for putting up a fight. Mentions that they were looking to survive initially and then went after the bowlers. Says that he always enjoys batting with Babar Azam and batting looks easy with him around.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

The Pakistan players began with absolute fire and Babar Azam started with the combination of the experienced Haris Rauf and the young debutant Naseem Shah. Both picked up one wicket each in the Powerplay and could probably have got a few more had their fielders held on to the catches. Pakistan were really poor on the field and that prevented them from being clinical and wrapping this game up early. Mohammad Nawaz controlled the middle overs of the game and was economical, picking the only wicket taken by a spinner in the whole game. Haris Rauf picked up three wickets but was a touch expensive and Naseem Shah bowled wonderfully to take three wickets. The biggest issue was the number of extras they conceded with 29 bonus runs added to the Dutch total. They eventually managed to close the game out but will know there is room for improvement in all three departments of the game.

The arrival of the Dutch skipper Scott Edwards, who has had a wonderful summer, kept the hosts on track. He translated his good form to bring up his fourth consecutive ODI fifty. Scott was ably supported by Teja Nidamanuru and Logan van Beek to keep the Netherlands in the hunt. Although the target seemed out of reach, they did well to play out the 50 overs and pushed Pakistan to the limit.

In pursuit of a big target, the Dutch team began tentatively but kept accumulating runs at a steady rate albeit in a streaky manner. Max O'Dowd and Wesley Barresi departed early to leave the Netherlands with quite an uphill task. Vikramjit Singh had a tough outing as he just could not get the spinners away or rotate the strike freely. He survived several drop catches and accumulated many lucky runs but eventually succumbed for 65 having faced 98 deliveries. While he seemed to be blowing cold, Tom Cooper definitely seemed to be blowing hot and provided the much-needed boost to the Netherlands innings. He took 54 deliveries for his 65 and his dismissal brought an end to a 97-run partnership between the two.

Well fought, Netherlands! Well fought, Scott Edwards! They made Pakistan sweat hard for this win. It was not a straightforward win for the visitors, as expected. This performance will certainly boost the confidence of the Dutch team and they will back themselves to cause an upset in the next game. For now, Pakistan bag the 10 points to make their case strong in the 2020-2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table.

Aryan Dutt makes his way out to the middle and he needs to rotate the strike.

Tim Pringle is the new batter at the crease and he will look to give the captain the strike.

Slight halt! That looked like it hit hard but Scott Edwards is smiling. The physios are checking on him now and he looks absolutely fine. They are checking the helmet and it seems like it needs to be replaced. The new helmet has been brought out and we are set to resume play. Naseem Shah (8-0-37-2) has been asked to bowl now.

Mohammad Wasim (8-0-45-1) has been brought back into the attack.

Haris Rauf is back into the attack now. He has conceded 34 runs in his 6 overs and taken two wickets.

Logan van Beek strides out to the middle. Naseem Shah seems to be having some trouble with his back. He is stretching it out and it just seems like cramps. He is okay to continue.

Powerplay 3! Pakistan can place five fielders outside the inner circle for the last 10 overs. Naseem Shah (6-0-27-1) has been brought back into the attack.

Slight halt! The groundstaff is out there putting some sawdust on the foothold at the non-striker's end. Naseem Shah seems to be clearing his spikes as some part of the soil came off while he was delivering the previous ball. All done and we are set to resume.

DRINKS! The players will take a break. Tom Cooper and Vikramjit Singh put on a good partnership for the fourth wicket but both have been dismissed now and with half their side in the dugout, it does look really difficult for the hosts. The Pakistan spinners controlled the middle phase of the game by keeping it tight. They will now be looking to end this game as soon as possible. Teja Nidamanuru is the new batter and will join Scott Edwards in the middle.

Naseem Shah (4-0-18-1) is back into the attack. He has been impressive so far on his ODI debut.

Scott Edwards, the captain of the Netherlands makes his way out to the middle after the end of a good partnership.

Mohammad Wasim (4-0-18-1) is also back into the attack.

Phew! There is a bowling change. The last few overs from the spinners ticked off very quickly. Here is Haris Rauf...

Agha Salman has been brought into the attack to see if he can get a breakthrough.

Shadab Khan is introduced into the attack.

DRINKS! The Netherlands got off to a decent start scoring 56 runs in Powerplay 1 but the issue for them is that they are already three wickets down. The Pakistani pace bowlers have been outstanding with all three of them chipping in with a wicket each. This looks like a difficult chase for the Dutchmen as they require 247 runs in 36 overs. Pakistan will be looking for more wickets after the break.

Tom Cooper makes his way out to the middle.

Babar Azam comes at first slip.

Powerplay 2 time. A maximum of 4 fielders are now allowed outside the ring till the 40th over.

Change from both ends. Mohammad Nawaz to bowl the final over of Powerplay 1.

Mohammad Wasim replaces Rauf from this end.

Bas de Leede is in next.

Wesley Barresi makes his way to the middle after an early wicket.

The debutant Naseem Shah has been brought on from the other end.

We are back for the run chase. The Pakistan players make their way out to the middle. Vikramjit Singh and Max O'Dowd are the openers for the Netherlands. Haris Rauf will begin proceedings with the new ball.

... RUN CHASE ...

Right then, it's a big ask from the Dutch batters to scale down this target against Pakistan's well-oiled bowling unit. Let's see how they approach the chase. Do join us in a short while to find out.

The Netherlands still have a lot of work to be done with their catching and death bowling if they are to compete at the highest level. Bas de Leede was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 wickets for 42 in his full quota of 10 overs. There were no wickets for the spinners with Logan van Beek taking two and Vivian Kingma chipping in with one. They all were very expensive though.

The Dutch bowled really well, to begin with, and were helped by Pakistan’s defensive approach. They got a wicket early after which they had to toil hard to get a breakthrough. They started leaking runs as the batters got more settled and the game seemed to be creeping away from them. At one stage, after the 20th over, Pakistan shifted gears and hammered 89 runs from the next 10 and shell-shocked the hosts. Vivian Kingma dropped Fakhar Zaman on 43 and that proved to be quite costly. However, the hosts came back strongly dismissing Babar Azam and then getting the centurion run out with some real good fielding. They kept chipping away at the wickets after that and did not allow Pakistan to go berserk towards the end.

The visitors started really watchfully as they so often have done, looking to set a solid platform and accelerate later. They lost Imam-ul-Haq early but his opening partner Fakhar Zaman motored along living a charmed life. He put on a 168-run partnership with his skipper Babar Azam to give Pakistan a great start. Fakhar reached his century and the base was set to accelerate in the last 15 overs. The set batters though departed in quick succession and Mohammad Rizwan did not last at the wicket for long. Agha Salman and Shadab Khan played useful cameos to push Pakistan just over the 300-run mark with the latter scoring 48 off just 28 balls. The visitors will probably be able to defend this but would have been hoping for a few more runs on the board.

As mentioned earlier, at one point it looked like Pakistan would get to 350 but the Netherlands did really well to restrict them to 314. Pakistan will feel that they could have done much better with the start they had but will feel it is probably still enough to win them this game. The Dutchmen fought well with the ball against a well-equipped batting unit and now it is up to the batters to try and chase down this target against a good bowling line-up.

Excellent finish at the backend from Pakistan as they amassed 99 runs from the last 10 overs. Still, the way they batted, at one stage, a score of 350 looked very much likely. Keeping that in mind, the visiting team will be a shade disappointed.

Vivian Kingma will bowl at the death. 8-2-53-1 are his figures.

Logan van Beek (8-0-57-2) has been brought into the attack.

Agha Salman has made his way out to the crease.

Appeal for a stumping...

Aryan Dutt (8-1-40-0) has been brought into the attack. This will be a challenge for him, bowling at batters looking to go after him.

Mohammad Nawaz is the new batter out in the middle.

Vivian Kingma (7-2-37-1) has been brought back into the attack.

Powerplay 3 time. One extra fielder, i.e. 5 can now be put outside the 30-yard circle till the end of this inning.

A direct hit at the striker's end. Netherlands are excited, they appeal and the umpire goes upstairs...

Shadab Khan is in next.

Bas de Leede to continue...

Bas de Leede (6-0-26-0) is back on.

Khushdil Shah walks in next.

Tim Pringle is back into the attack. 0 for 45 in his 7 overs so far.

Mohammad Rizwan makes his way out to the middle and there is a loud cheer from the crowd.

Logan van Beek has been reintroduced into the attack. He has been expensive conceding 32 runs in his five overs without a wicket.

Aryan Dutt (6-1-22-0) has been brought back for his third spell.

Bas de Leede is back on. 0 for 21 in his 4 overs so far.

Slight halt in play as Tom Cooper has hurt his fingers and getting some running repairs done. The umpires have decided to take the Drinks break. It's been a complete turnaround in the last few overs. We questioned Pakistan's slow approach but it seems to have paid off. It was a smart strategy, they made the Dutch team comfortable with their initial approach and then launched a sudden attack. The hosts are taken by surprise and are running helter-skelter. If this onslaught continues, Pakistan will cruise to a very imposing total. Can the Netherlands limit the damage?

Tom Cooper is getting ready to bowl his part-time off spinners.

Change of footwear for Vivian Kingma and a banana for Fakhar Zaman. Slight halt in play. Pakistan are on the attack and Netherlands are feeling the heat.

Vivian Kingma comes back into the attack. He dropped Fakhar Zaman on 43, can he make amends?

Tim Pringle (5-0-21-0) is back on.

Bas de Leede has been asked to bowl now. He has been impressive so far giving just 9 runs in his 3 overs.

Logan van Beek has been brought back into the attack. He has conceded 9 runs in his three overs.

Aryan Dutt is back into the attack. 4-1-11-0 are his figures so far.

Scott Edwards wears his helmet and comes up to the stumps as Tim Pringle returns for his second spell. 0 for 14 from his 3 overs so far.

Slight halt in play. Is it a wasp sting on Fakhar Zaman's left elbow? Yup. The physio rushes out. All is good now and Fakhar Zaman is ready to take guard.

Drinks break. Slow going from Pakistan but that's more by choice than compulsion. The Netherlands have bowled decently, not much threatening but they have been treated with extra respect from the Pakistan batters so far. Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman have raised a 50-run stand and looking to prepare a good launching pad for a big finish at the backend. Can the Dutch team pick a few wickets in the middle phase to create some pressure? Let's find out.

Slight halt! The physios are out for the mandatory concussion check. Fakhar Zaman looks alright and they are checking the helmet. All seems good now and play is set to resume.

Bas de Leede has been given the ball now.

Logan van Beek has been brought into the attack.

Powerplay 2 time. A maximum of 4 fielders are now allowed outside the ring till the 40th over.

A few words were exchanged between Vivian Kingma and Fakhar Zaman after the over. Change in bowling. Tim Pringle to have a go inside Powerplay 1.

Babar Azam, the superstar of Pakistan's batting, walks in next amidst a huge cheer from the crowd.

DRS time! Imam-ul-Haq is the batter in question. He has failed to flick an inswinger and is rapped on the pads. Looks close but the finger stays down. Scott Edwards has decided to review the decision. Nothing on the UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows that it's hitting the leg stump. All over for Imam-ul-Haq!

Vivian Kingma will bowl from the other end with the second new ball.

Time to play the game! The Dutch players are in a huddle. Scott Edwards is giving the team talk in his first full series as a captain. Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq are the openers for Pakistan. Aryan Dutt has been given the first new ball against the two left-handers.

Scott Edwards, the skipper of Netherlands, says that he would have batted as well but is not too unhappy bowling first. Tells that it's been a busy few months and he is enjoying leading the team. Mentions that they have been competing well but they want to try and get a few wins on the board. Informs that they have Wesley Barresi in the XI and Vivian Kingma is also back. He is looking forward to playing in front of a lot of Dutch supporters.

Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, says that they want to put runs on the board and put pressure on the Dutch team. Tells that they have prepared well and are confident. Informs us that they have a couple of debutants in Naseem Shah and Agha Salman.

Netherlands (Playing XI) - Vikramjit Singh, Max O'Dowd, Bas de Leede, Tom Cooper, Scott Edwards (C/WK), Teja Nidamanuru, Wesley Barresi, Logan van Beek, Tim Pringle, Aryan Dutt, Vivian Kingma.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Agha Salman (On ODI debut), Khushdil Shah, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah (On ODI debut).

TOSS - The coin is flipped into the air and it lands in favor of Pakistan. They have elected to BAT first.

The hosts have played good cricket in patches but have been unable to get over the finish line. The most recent example is their dominating performance in the T20 World Cup qualifiers, winning all their games comfortably but ending up losing the finals to Zimbabwe. They are languishing at the bottom of the Super League table and they have an opportunity here to beat a stronger team thereby marking their credentials. They did not put up a good show against England in their last series at home losing all the games by comfortable margins. The Dutch will be desperate to put up a better show this time around and make it more of a contest.
