New Zealand beat South Africa by an innings and 276 runs

Hagley Oval, Christchurch

That's all we have from this one-sided Test match. There is one more left for South Africa on this tour, again at the Hagley Oval, starting on 25th February 2022. Do join us for the coverage. The first ball will be at 3.30 am IST (10 pm GMT, previous day) but as usual, the build-up will begin in advance. Until we meet again, it's goodbye and cheers!

For picking 9 wickets in the match and scoring 58 runs with the bat, Matt Henry has been given the Player of the Match award.

Tim Southee comes up for a quick interview. The speedster starts by saying that it's not in South Africa's nature to get rolled over so they knew that they will have to work hard. States that it's been a clinical three days for them. Mentions that different guys stepped up on different occasions and that's the way they want to play. Regarding his record of becoming the leading wicket-taker for New Zealand in Tests at home, Southee chooses to remain humble and replies that when you play for a long time, you tick off a few milestones. He is really proud to be in the same conversation as Sir Richard Hadlee. Signs off by saying that they want to enjoy this win but at the same time, they are aware that South Africa will bounce back.

The Kiwis will remember this Test match for their quality show! Matt Henry set the tone on Day 1 with his scintillating bowling and then the other Henry, Henry Nicholls took the mantle with the bat. His century and partnerships kept New Zealand always ahead and then Neil Wagner's blitz with the bat on the morning of Day 2 completely deflated the Saffas. Tom Blundell and Matt Henry piled on the misery with a 94-run stand for the final wicket and shut the door of any comeback for the touring team.

Just a month back, South Africa were on cloud nine after beating India at home but just in three days on this tour, they have come crashing down. Insipid batting, unconvincing bowling and mediocre catching were the three prime reasons for their loss. The conditions in New Zealand demand your batting technique be well polished but it wasn't. In the first innings, they played at many deliveries deserving to be left and kept on erring. The picture remained the same in the second innings too. With the ball, their inexperience showed up as they failed to stick to a consistent line and length but things could have been different, had they not dropped SEVEN catches - Tom Latham once, Henry Nicholls twice, Neil Wagner once, Tim Southee twice and Matt Henry once. All these added to their misery and New Zealand stormed away with a 387-run lead.

Thorough dominance! New Zealand were facing a team on a high after its recent success against India and they were without the likes of Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson and Trent Boult. Did that make any difference? A resounding no. The Kiwis have finished the first Test match in three days and it's a testament to their bench strength and the quality they possess in this format, especially at home.

There it is, the waiting period of 18 years is over - New Zealand have finally beaten South Africa in a Test match. The last time they won, Stephen Fleming was the captain and it has been a really long wait for the Kiwis. Seven wickets to pick this morning and the hosts did that without breaking a sweat. Tim Southee was exceptional, as he bagged a 5-fer and he now has the most Test wickets at home for New Zealand, surpassing Sir Richard Hadlee.

OUT! LBW! Tim Southee finishes things off. He goes wide of the crease and angles a length ball, around middle and leg, Glenton Stuurman hangs on his back foot to defend but misses and gets hit on the pads. An appeal for LBW is made but that looked like going down. The umpire remains unmoved. Tom Latham is not too convinced when he decides to take the DRS but it turns out to be in his favour as the Ball Tracking shows three reds. Wonderful bowling by Tim Southee, he finishes with a five-wicket haul. New Zealand win the match by an innings and 276 runs!

That's an umpire killer and Neil Wagner's hand has saved Chris Gaffaney there! Chris owes Wagner a beer. Fuller in length and around off, Marco Jansen smashes it straight back, it's uppish and travelling at the rate of knots, Neil Wagner reacts and sticks his left hand out. The ball doesn't stay in but changes its trajectory and goes wide of the umpire. Chris Gaffaney though has already taken evasive action and is down flat on the ground to save himself. He is seeing the funny side of it. In the books, this will go down as a dropped catch but it was a real tough one.

28.3 W 0

OUT! Given LBW! This time there isn't much doubt in the mind of the umpire. Wagner comes up with a superb inswinging delivery. He pitches it full around middle, at 129.6 kph, Bavuma presses forward in defense but it beats the inner edge and goes on to hit him on the back leg. They appeal and the finger has gone up. Temba opts for the DRS. No bat on the UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows that it's clipping the top of the stumps. Umpire's call and South Africa lose their sixth wicket. Temba Bavuma returns after offering some fight.

Review time! New Zealand take a review for a caught behind decision. There was noise but UltraEdge shows no spike on it and the on-field decision stays.

28.2 0

NOT OUT! Wagner delivers it down the leg side, on a good length, Bavuma tries to glance but fails to connect properly. It flies behind with some noise and Tom Blundell appeals after collecting the ball. The finger has stayed down and Tom Latham decides to review it. OUT! TIMBER! Well, nothing has changed for South Africa as New Zealand have come with the same determination. What a peach of delivery this is! It lands on a length around off and shapes back in. Rassie van der Dussen is on the front foot, looks to defend but the ball goes through the gate and rattles the stumps. Not a lot that Rassie did wrong there, maybe because he was half forward, the seam movement found a tiny hole in his defense. He has a bemused look on his face. Walks forward, taps the pitch a bit and then returns to the pavilion. Superb start for New Zealand.

9.1 0

Full ball, outside off. Rassie van der Dussen is early into the shot as he pushes it to square leg off the inner edge.

Bright sunshine at the Hagley Oval but unlike yesterday, there are clouds around. Keep in mind, the forecast is for some rain in the third session. The Kiwi players are making their way out to the middle. Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma are the overnight batters for South Africa. It is all about showing resilience for them. Let's see how they approach it. Matt Henry to speed in first up...

South Africa have had a Test match to forget so far. You can hardly count any positives for them, actually, there are none to count. After staring down at a massive 387-run deficit, they would have hoped to fight better than the first innings but once again, their batting show has been dismal. Three top-order wickets are already down and to be honest, it's too much to ask from the rest of the batting to do anything substantial. That said, with the next Test match at this very venue, it's a good opportunity to have batting practice in an international match. For how long can they resist?

Hello and a warm welcome to everyone for what could be the final day of this Test match. We've moved along at a brisk pace with New Zealand flexing their muscle from Day 1. Once you bundle out a team in the first two sessions of a Test, usually, you are in a good position to call the shots. The Kiwis have done exactly that and are now 7 wickets away from going 1-0 up in the 2-match series. Can they do it on Day 3? Let's find out.

... DAY 3, SESSION 1 ...

Right then, usually, we say Day 3 is the moving day of a Test match but here we have a different scenario - Day 3 could be the final day of this Test match. There is a forecast for rain in the last session but the way New Zealand have bowled thus far, picking 7 wickets in two sessions won't be tough for them. Having said that, we should never write off a team so easily. South Africa will try their best to put up a fight. The first ball on Saturday will be at 3.30 am IST (10 pm GMT, previous day) but as usual, our build-up will begin much before. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!

Tom Blundell, who missed his century by 4 runs, says that he is pretty happy to spend time in the middle and would have loved a ton but he enjoyed batting. Adds that Matt Henry has had a really good game. Shares that he has been working on his batting and this track kind of suits him and he hopes there are more such knocks coming. Ends by saying that the bowling at the end of the day was very good and if they keep the momentum going, they can win it on Day 3.

The period after Lunch brought a couple of wickets for the touring team and they would have hoped to restore some sanity. Their joy didn't last for long though. After dismissing Henry Nicholls soon after he completed a century, they encountered Colin de Grandhomme who was equally lethal, striking at over 100. Tom Blundell also played a responsible knock and his 94-run stand for the final wicket with Matt Henry - the best of the Kiwi innings - completely floored the Proteas. Blundell was unlucky to miss his ton but his efforts handed New Zealand an enormous 387-run lead. Here he is, having a word...

Dominance, ruthless dominance! That's what New Zealand have achieved in two days. Day 2 was all about extending their advantage over South Africa and they did it in style. The nightwatchman, Neil Wagner, whose primary job was to protect Henry Nicholls last evening, donned the avatar of Brendon McCullum this morning as he went berserk from the word go. He targeted the bowlers of South Africa and with his unorthodox style of batting, he punished them to every nook and corner of the ground. Just imagine, 74 runs in the first hour of play, and that was enough to take the wind out of the South African sails.

New Zealand continue to boss this Test match! A little window of 9 overs for their bowlers and they successfully removed the cream of the South African batting. With three wickets down, the touring team will be fighting a battle of survival from here onward.

The players are back on the field. Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee are the openers for South Africa with just one aim at the moment - survive the day's play. Tim Southee to speed in...

... THIRD INNINGS ...

It was a dismal bowling show by the touring team. They were inconsistent with their lines and suffered. To add to their misery, as many as seven catches went down and they were made to pay heavily. The final wicket stand between Tom Blundell and Matt Henry summed up South Africa's performance, the last pair added 94 runs and stretched the lead for New Zealand near 400. The Proteas now will have to bat out of their skin to come out of this Test match unscathed. 9 overs in the day's play left. Let's see what happens next...

A strong batting show by the Kiwis and they were nicely assisted by some below-par bowling and mediocre catching from South Africa. One Henry did the damage with the ball, the other Henry took the charge with the bat. Henry Nicholls, who was dropped twice, went on to score a superb century and his stand with Devon Conway handed the home team the platform. This morning, Neil Wagner went hammer and tongs to deflate South Africa's confidence. The rate with which New Zealand batted on Day 2 was exceptional and that has handed them a good advantage.

The best stand of the Kiwi innings which came for the final wicket has been broken finally and South Africa would be feeling relieved. Two days of toil for them and they are way behind in this Test match, trailing by 387 runs.

117.5 W 0

OUT! CAUGHT! Heartbreak for Tom Blundell. Beauty of a delivery! Jansen serves it on a good length around off and takes it away with the angle. Tom Blundell hangs on the back foot and feels for it inside the line. It goes very closely past the outside edge and the keeper appeals after collecting the ball. The finger stays down and Elgar gets convinced to take the DRS. There is a spike on the UltraEdge and New Zealand are all out for 482.

117.4 1

Too full and around off, Matt drives it through covers for a single.

117.3 0

It is time for the final session of the day! 36 overs left so we are in for a long one. The Kiwi batters, Kyle Jamieson and Tom Blundell make their way out to the middle. Marco Jansen to begin for the visitors. Here we go...

... DAY 2, SESSION 3 ...

New Zealand will now hope they continue the good work and Tom Blundell along with the lower order extends the lead close to 350, at least. South Africa, on the other hand, will hope they can make quick work of the lower order, for that though they will need to bowl well which they have not. Will the last session go their way? Do join us at 8.30 am IST (3 am GMT) to find out.

The Saffas began the session brilliantly by getting Daryl Mitchell but they could not capitalize on it. Then there was a partnership between Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell with the former getting to his ton but he fell soon after that. Colin de Grandhomme then came out and counter-attacked. He along with Blundell added 76 runs in no time. Have to say that stand has probably taken the game away from South Africa. They did get Colin towards the end of this session but not before he had done his job.

Another session which belongs to the hosts, yes they might have lost the three wickets but the pace they are scoring at is giving them the advantage and also, with the lead now over 250, the game is just drifting away from the visitors and at a rapid pace.

OUT! CAUGHT AT SLIPS! Certainly, there was a lapse in concentration on Henry Nicholls' part after reaching his century and he has eventually fallen. Duanne Olivier speeds in and angles across a full-length ball outside off, at 132.6 kph, the invitation is there to drive and Henry Nicholls falls into the trap. A bit loose from him as he gets forward and edges it towards Aiden Markram at second slip who makes no mistake. A timely breakthrough for South Africa with the second new ball just around the corner. OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! That is a sharp catch and it is the first Test wicket for Glenton Stuurman! We are back! The South African players make their way out to the middle and are followed by Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell who will continue their innings. Marco Jansen is seen with his cap off so it will probably be him to begin with. It indeed is and he will bowl to the left-hander. Here we go...

... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...

With Neil Wagner taking the South African bowlers to the cleaners, all the limelight was on him and that allowed Henry Nicholls to settle down. Their 80-run alliance has laid the foundation for a big lead for the Kiwis and they would be aiming to extend it after the Lunch break. For South Africa, they will have to find a way to make a comeback. The visitors have not looked convincing in the field and need more energy and intensity. Do join us at 6.10 am IST (12.40 am GMT) for the second session.

Yet another session of this Test match has belonged to New Zealand as they have swelled their lead from 21 to 140 runs. The morning session was all about Neil Wagner and his unorthodox batting. Being a nightwatchman, he fulfilled his duties pretty well. Targeted South Africa's best bowler, Kagiso Rabada, in the first hour and got the better of him. Wagner's counter-attack demoralized the Saffas who were running helter-skelter. 74 runs in the first hour took the wind out of their sails and despite removing Wagner soon after that, they remained flat with their bowling.

OUT! CAUGHT! Neil Wagner is very disappointed, he has missed out on the opportunity to score his second Test fifty. Anyway, the nightwatchman has done his job for the team - last evening he did his best to protect the main batter and this morning, his counter-punch shell-shocked the touring team. Kagiso Rabada has redeemed himself a bit. Serves it on a fuller length around leg, at 138.7 kph, Neil Wagner flicks it across the line, right from the middle of the bat and he has timed it so well that it carries to Rassie van der Dussen at deep square leg. Should have gone with more power. Neil is walking back, looking at the heavens. The lead for New Zealand is 96 runs now. Daryl Mitchell walks in next to partner Henry Nicholls.

We're ready to get underway here! The sun is shining brightly and there is not a single cloud in the vicinity. That said, there will be something in it for the pacers early on. If New Zealand manage to see off the initial phase, they will get a perfect batting condition as the day progresses. A very critical first hour is about to begin. The South African players are on the field. Neil Wagner and Henry Nicholls are the overnight batters for the Kiwis. Marco Jansen to speed in first up. Here we go...

The morning session is going to be of utmost importance, especially for the Saffas. There will be some help for their bowlers and if they fail to deliver, the writing will be on the wall. We witnessed that things eased out a bit in the afternoon and the pitch flattened out. Certainly, there was not the same amount of assistance as it was in the first session and hence we feel that to avoid the leather hunt, South Africa will have to make a strong start. Also, their catching needs to be a lot better as more such blips can cost them dearly.

Welcome back, folks! The second day of the first Test match is upon us. It was an extraordinary start to this series on Thursday. The conditions assisted the fast bowlers and they relished. Matt Henry benefited the most by claiming a 7-wicket haul and his efforts decimated the touring team. Right now, the Kiwis have the upper hand but given the morning conditions, it could slip away quickly if they are not alert. Stay tuned for more...

... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...

Right then, New Zealand are ahead by 21 runs and have 7 wickets in the bank. Their aim would be to bat South Africa out of the match on Day 2. That said, the early morning conditions will bring plenty of challenges their way and that will be the opportunity for South Africa to make a comeback. Can they do it? The first ball on Friday will be at 3.30 am IST (10 pm GMT, previous day) but as usual, our build-up will begin much before. Until we meet again, it's goodbye and cheers!

South Africa bowled well but only in patches and their catching was mediocre, to say the least. As many as four catches went down and had they taken all of them, they could have been in a better position. It was a struggle for Tom Latham and Will Young during their stay against the new ball but once they departed, the pair of Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls joined forces and brought a sense of calmness at the crease. They combined for a 75-run stand and helped New Zealand in wiping off the deficit. Conway did fall late in the day but Nicholls is still going strong and a big knock will be expected from him on Day 2. Just for the record, Henry Nicholls was dropped twice by South Africa, once in the slip cordon by Zubayr Hamza at the score of 5 and then by Temba Bavuma at point when he was on 23.

A wicket late in the evening will have given South Africa some hope but they are still miles behind in this match after an abysmal batting show. It was a riveting day of Test cricket, dominated by the bowlers as 13 wickets fell altogether. The Hagley Oval had plenty of juice on the surface and the pacers utilized it to their advantage. Matt Henry was the star with his 7-wicket haul as he demolished the South African batting and played a major role in bundling them out for only 95 runs. In reply, it was not easy for New Zealand against some tidy bowling from the Proteas.

... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...

The South African players are back on the field. They are going through their warm-up drills at the moment. We're hearing that TEA has been taken on Day 1. Do join us in a short while then for the final session.

... SECOND INNINGS ...

Right then, the batting has let South Africa down and it's over to their bowlers to help them get back in this Test match. They have plenty of quality in their bowling ranks and let's see how they utilize the conditions. Stay tuned to find out...

The destroyer-in-chief, Matt Henry comes up for a quick chat. Says that it's a great start to the Test match and he is feeling great in front of his friends and family. Tells that it's nice to get an opportunity to play Test cricket. Mentions that after watching the overhead conditions, he was hoping to get a chance to bowl first.

South Africa were put to bat under testing conditions but by no means it's a 95 all out surface. There was a lack of application on their part and the technique was also questionable. They ended up playing many deliveries meant to be left and as a result, kept losing wickets. Zubayr Hamza and Kyle Verreynne did put up a little resistance but that was not enough.

Blown away! No strong wind here in Christchurch but the local boy, Matt Henry, has still blown away the Proteas with his stormy bowling. With an outstanding bowling figure of 7 for 23, the speedster decimated the South African batting line-up. The other bowlers also rallied around him and it was a clinical show from the Kiwis in the park.

Welcome back, folks! We're getting ready for the second segment of the day's play. The clouds have disappeared completely now and the Hagley Oval is bathed in bright sunshine. The pitch could have settled down a bit also. A quick huddle for the Kiwis before they get back on the field. Temba Bavuma and Zubayr Hamza have a big task in front of them as they walk out. Tim Southee to begin the second session as well...

... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...

South Africa have their backs to the wall after a sorry start. Temba Bavuma and Zubayr Hamza have spent some time in the middle and despite getting beaten on plenty of occasions, they have braved the conditions. The touring team would be hoping for a partnership between them when the action resumes after Lunch. Do join us at 6.10 am IST (12.40 am GMT) for the second session.

A morning of dominance for the Black Caps. Everything has gone according to the plan. Tom Latham opted to bowl and his bowlers vindicated his decision. Matt Henry impressed the most with his pace and the ability to move the ball both ways. He picked up the first wicket by dismissing Dean Elgar cheaply and then hunted down two wickets in one over after returning for his second spell. The rest of the Kiwi bowlers were also right on the money and tested the South African batters with some impeccable lines and lengths.

But the away movement results in a thick outside edge and Tim Southee takes another sharp catch at third slip. New Zealand have four wickets in the morning session thus far and are roaring. NOT OUT! Southee makes this one to come back in. It lands on a length and is around off. Sarel covers his off stump and shoulders arms to it but gets hit on the back leg. A huge, huge appeal for LBW but not given. We can hear the Kiwis saying height is not the issue and they take the review. No bat there. Ball Tracking shows that the impact is with the umpire's call and it's also missing the stumps.

All in readiness. A quick huddle from New Zealand before they spread on the field. We can see some blue skies at the moment. The pitch is green in colour, so it's going to be a big challenge for the openers of South Africa. Dean Elgar and the debutant Sarel Erwee walk out now. Tim Southee to kick off proceedings with the new cherry. Three slips and a gully in place. Both teams take the customary knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Here we go...

The sun is peeping out a bit from the clouds as the players walk out. Both teams line up in the middle for their respective national anthem. South Africa's first, followed by New Zealand's. We're minutes away from the first ball.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Tom Latham (C), Will Young, Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Colin de Grandhomme, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Matt Henry.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Dean Elgar (C), Sarel Erwee (On Debut), Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma, Zubayr Hamza, Kyle Verreynne (WK), Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Glenton Stuurman (On Debut), Duanne Olivier.

TOSS - Up goes the coin and it lands in favour of Tom Latham. New Zealand will BOWL first!

New Zealand's coach Gary Stead confirmed that Matt Henry will replace Boult which seems the home side will go with an all-pace attack while Dean Elgar has hinted that Sarel Erwee might get an opportunity to make his Test debut. Will he get the nod? Only time will tell. Toss and team news coming up shortly...

New Zealand will be without some veteran players like Kane Williamson and Trent Boult. With Ross Taylor now retired, they need someone like him to fill his void. They drew their last home series against Bangladesh while South Africa won 2-1 against India. The Kiwis will enjoy the home condition but with a few senior players missing, they have to get their best game against a side that is sitting fourth on the World Test Championship table.

Good morning, everyone! There is a special feeling when New Zealand host a Test series. Such is the charm of this place. The lush green outfield and strong winds are the hallmarks here and they bring a different kind of challenge for the touring teams. South Africa are in the country to challenge the supremacy of the Black Caps at home and the coming two Test matches are going to be full of excitement. We are here for the first one in Christchurch, the second one is also here, and can't wait to get going. Stay tuned for more...
