Right then. That’s it from the coverage of this game. The hosts have taken a 1-nil lead in this three-match series. But let us not forget, India took the lead in the Test series but South Africa turned it around in the next two games. India would hope they can replicate the same in this series and would look to come back stronger in the second ODI. This game will be played on 21st with the first ball being bowled at 1400 IST (0830 GMT). But as you all know you can join us early for the build-up. Cheers!

Rassie van der Dussen wins the Man of the Match award for his incredible knock with his blade. He says, he knew he needed to go for the sweeps and reverse sweeps and put the spinners under pressure. Adds as soon as they got a partnership going on a good batting wicket, they put up a good score. Adds there was pressure when he walked out but he was confident and the team was confident and they knew 285 plus was going to be a good score and all in all, it was a good day for them. Ends by saying when Shikhar and Kohli were there, they were under pressure but as soon as they got those wickets, the game changed and they knew if they kept taking wickets, they will build pressure.

Temba Bavuma, the victorious skipper is in for a chat. He says it was a good win and he is happy. States he struggled throughout the innings to hit it in the middle and find the gaps but Rassie did really well and he provided the much-needed impetus and he just wanted to hang in there with him. Credits Jansen for the way he bowled and says he is growing as a cricketer. Mentions Markram is always an option for them with the ball and he always comes in handy. Further says Andile was really good, he would have loved to play a bigger part in the game but he understood the situation and he is a big player in the team and he rose to the occasion. Ends by saying the spinners were excellent, they tried to use Shamsi differently and he did really well and he is also pleased to have de Kock back and he is a big player for the team.

KL Rahul, the Indian skipper is in for a chat. He says it was a good game and they love playing in such games, there is a lot to learn. Admits they struggled to get wickets in the middle and they need to work on that. Further adds they were on par with the bat till the 25th over but then South Africa bowled really well. Mentions he did not bat for long so he has no idea about how much the pitch changed but Virat and Dhawan did tell him it was a good wicket to bat on, you just needed to hang in there. Also says when two people from the opposition bat deep, they are bond to post a good score, they needed someone to do that but that was not the case. Ends by saying they did feel in the break they gave away 30 runs extra but had they got a few more partnerships, they could have gotten over the line and they will learn from this.

Stay tuned for presentation...

Earlier in the day, after electing to bat, South Africa were in trouble as they were three down in for less than 100. Then came the 200-run stand between Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma with both scoring runs and that powered the hosts close to 300. India began well, for the first part of the second essay, it seemed India would take the lead in this series but in the end, it is the home side who head into the second ODI with the advantage.

For South Africa, they did not bowl that well in the first half of this innings! There were far too many boundary balls, they struggled to build pressure on the Indian batters and also bowled quite a few extras. Not their fault too, the ball seemed to be coming on very nicely. Once the ball got old and soft though, it started to grip and then the likes of Shamsi and Maharaj came into their own. Ngidi was also very handful with his cutters and Andile Phehlukwayo also did his job. A really good effort from them after being put under pressure.

A very convincing win in the end for South Africa! Never did we feel though it would be that convincing. The top three really played well to get India into a fine position. Especially Kohli and Dhawan. The two added just over 90 and scored half tons each. However, the two fell in quick succession and then it all went down the hill for India. The likes of Pant and the two Iyers failed to contribute a lot. It then became an uphill task and they fell short by some margin.

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The South African players stride out to the middle. Also, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan walk out to open for India. Aiden Markram to start with the ball.

... The Run Chase ...

Now the target is a big one. The wicket is a touch slow but not a bad one to bat on. India do have the potential to chase this down. Also, in 2001, Tendulkar and Ganguly had scored twin hundreds for India against South Africa but South Africa managed to chase the total. Two South African batters did score tons here too, will this be gunned down? We will find out.

Rassie van der Dussen is in for a chat. He says, he feels really good. Their aim was to take the partnership going and Bavuma played a good anchoring innings which allowed him to play his innings. Mentions it is just about matching the intensity. Adds he has learned a lot in a year or two and says that has helped him a lot. Says there was a swing early on but as the ball got older they had several gaps to work with. Ends by saying, they are well above par and would hope to execute the plans with the ball.

The Indian bowling was excellent for the first 20 overs. The new ball bowlers got it moving earlier on and caused issues and then the spinners got it to turn which caused problems. Post that though, they found it quite tough to contain the run flow. Thakur and Chahal did not have the best of days. Bumrah and Ashwin though were impressive but Rahul will be disappointed they could not capitalise on the advantage they had.

The start though wasn’t the best. They lost three just for the score of 68 and then, even run-scoring seemed difficult. However, then came the stand which turned the tide completely in South Africa’s favour. It was a mammoth 200-run partnership between Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma with both scoring tons. They counter-attacked and did so brilliantly. They did slow down though as they were nearing their tons or 300 looked on the cards but South Africa have a really good total on the board.

That is some recovery from the hosts! Let me remind you, the average first innings score here is around the 220-run mark and South Africa have finished around 80 runs above that so really don’t need to mention who the happier of the two sides will be. Had they been given this score at the toss, they would have surely taken it.

Now this target looks far away.

India on the other hand, need Pant to stick in the middle for long. Venkatesh Iyer joins him in the middle who is making his debut.

Followed by Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan who walk out to the bat for South Africa. Before we get underway the South African players take the knee to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Jasprit Bumrah to start with the new ball.

The game is set to begin. Both the teams come out to the middle and line up for their respective national anthems. It will be India's first followed by the hosts.

PITCH REPORT – Dale Steyn says in the first innings it will skid on a little bit. Adds it is very hot and the wicket should get slow as the match progresses.

KL Rahul, the Indian skipper joins for a word and says as a team they even they would've loved to bat first. States it looks dry and they have some quality spinners and if Bumrah and Kumar get early wickets, it could put pressure on them. Informs Chahal, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar come in and Iyer will he debuting, will bat as 4. Adds Virat has been their leader for a long time but he is still with them and he will help them out and they are excited about this game. States they want to give the boys a long run and wants them to enjoy and grow as a team.

Temba Bavuma, the South African skipper, is in for a chat. He says the wicket looks dry and it has been ready for some while and they want to make use of the conditions and he hopes the slow bowlers can make use of it later on. States the Test series win was a big achievement but it is a new challenge and they need to do well and adapt well. Informs that Jansen comes in and Lungi is also in.

India (Playing XI) - KL Rahul (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (WK), Venkatesh Iyer (On ODI debut), Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah.

TOSS - Up goes the coin and it lands in favour of South Africa. They have opted to BAT first.

India on the other hand, are one of the best teams in the shorter format. Yes, there are quite a few new names in the squad but they are still a quality side. Can they get back to winning ways after losing the last two Tests? We shall find out soon.

South Africa have not been in the best of forms in this format. They have lost more than they have won in recent times and this is going to be yet another stern test for them. They do have the quality to topple this Indian side but they will need to be at their best.

After a superb Test series, it is now time for the ODI series. India will be disappointed after losing that and the South Africans will be high on confidence after turning it around. The visitors will be looking for redemption under their new skipper, KL Rahul. South Africa on the other hand, will be hungry for another series win. This promises to be yet another cracking series. Toss in a while.
