Australia beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets

R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo

Right then! That is it from this one-sided affair. Australia go 1-0 up but Sri Lanka will look to draw things up in the 2nd T20I which is on Wednesday, 8th June at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). Do join us in advance for the build-up as well. Till then, goodbye and cheers!

Aaron Finch, the skipper of Australia says that they have had a really similar group for a while, everyone understands their role, and it's only about giving them confidence. Mentions that Josh Hazlewood bowled at a consistent length, Sri Lanka played very well in the powerplay but they were able to control the middle overs. Adds that he feels nice to get some runs and put on a partnership with David Warner. Concludes by saying that it was a good performance overall.

The skipper of Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka says that it is a day that everything went wrong for them. Mentions that they had a serious talk regarding their batting, they spoke about the openers providing them with a start, however, the batters will have to come up with a plan. Further adds that it's the first game of the series and hoping they will have better days.

Josh Hazlewood is the Player of the Match for his excellent figures of (4-0-16-4) - He says it was not the ideal conditions to bowl as it was hot and sweaty, but they bowled well as a unit and the results showed. Mentions that the new ball flew off the bat in the beginning but they pulled things back and back of a length did work in their favour. Adds that he has been working hard on his T20 game, playing a lot of it.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

A dominant performance from Australia. Aaron Finch won the toss and since then it was all going his way. The first half of the first innings was dominated by the hosts but things started to turn around as once the top three fell, wickets started to fall like a pack of cards. It was the two frontline bowlers, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood who ran through the batting lineup. The chase was like a walk in the park for the two great Aussie openers - David Warner and Aaron Finch. They brought their respective fifties and crossed the victory line with ease.

Sri Lanka will be really disappointed with how things panned out. From being 100 for 1 to nose-diving and bundling out at 128 is not a good sign for them. It was always going to be a hard job for the bowlers to defend a below-par score on a pitch that was a belter for batting. The Sri Lankan bowlers tried their best but they were always behind the 8-ball and ultimately failed to even open their wicket column.

Australia go 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series without hardly breaking a sweat. A commanding performance from the Aussies, the bowlers did the job earlier and it was superbly followed by the openers to win by 10 wickets. The win was inevitable for the visitors even when the rain stopped the play as they were very close to the finishing line.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

The bowlers have justified Aaron Finch's decision to bowl first! What a scintillating performance this was from the visitors! After being put onto the back foot early in the innings but they fought back well and demolished the Lankan batting lineup in the last ten overs. Josh Hazlewood grabbed three wickets in one over which was probably the turning point. He was definitely the leader of the pack as he picked up four wickets and gave away just 16 runs in his spell. Mitchell Starc was exceptional as well, as he ended with 3 wickets by his name. It's up to the batters now, they have a great opportunity to take a lead in this series. Can they do so? Will find out soon. Stay tuned for the second essay.

After being put into bat first, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start. They scored 50 runs and lost just one wicket at the end of the Powerplay. Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka put on a good partnership of 63 runs before Nissanka perished for a solid 38. That was the only partnership that flourished for Sri Lanka. Post that it all went downhill for the hosts. They lost 9 wickets within 28 runs. Sri Lanka do have a strong bowling attack, but defending a below-par target of 129 is going to be a challenge.

What a stupendous bowling performance we have just witnessed! From cruising at 100 for 1 Sri Lanka have been bundled out for just 128! Aaron Finch and his men will definitely be the happier side going into this break, while Sri Lanka will be disappointed after the start they got. They face a tough task ahead of them from here on.

19.3 W 0

OUT! That is the end of Sri Lanka's inning! A length ball, outside off. Maheesh Theekshana swings across and slices it high and over covers. David Warner runs to his right from mid off and takes a superb diving catch. He made it look so easy. Sri Lanka are all out on 128.

19.2 0

We are all set for the action. The players of Australia are out in the middle. Pathum Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilaka are the openers of Sri Lanka. Mitchell Starc is all set to steam in with a fresh new ball.

Both the teams line up for their respective national anthems. It is Australia's first followed by Sri Lanka's. The players also remember the passing away of late Aussie great - Andrew Symonds.

Dasun Shanaka, the skipper of Sri Lanka says the boys have grown up in confidence after playing some franchise cricket. Adds that he is happy to bat first, looks like a good wicket.

Aaron Finch, the skipper of Australia says they are going to bowl first, looks like a good surface and they will want to chase. Mentions that Glenn Maxwell is much better than a part-time spinner, he can be aggressive but yes, they are going with one frontline spinner and backing Maxwell.

PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is down near the pitch. He says it's a belter of a pitch. Adds that it's an even pitch, but on the dry side. Little cracks on it, but there will be good bounce and carry. All the players will have a smile on their faces. Mentions that the toss will not matter much, also there is no dew expected.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka (C), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara.

Australia (Playing XI) - Aaron Finch (C), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade (WK), Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Josh Hazlewood.

TOSS - Australia have won the toss and they will BOWL first!

The weather in Colombo seems cloudy and there is a possibility of rain as well. But let’s hope we face no interruptions and we get to witness a full game. We have an exciting battle to look forward to. Stay tuned for the toss and other updates.

Talking about a lethal bowling attack, Sri Lanka's main strength is their bowling unit. Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dushmantha Chameera form the core of their attack and they prove to be a real threat to the opposition. However, it’s their batting that needs to step up. They have added Bhanuka Rajapaksa to their playing XI and looking at his recent form he could prove to be a boon for them.

Both these sides have already named their playing XI. Australia’s big guns, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and Glenn Maxwell, who had missed the previous T20I against Pakistan, have returned to the side. They all did well in the recently concluded Indian T20 League and will be looking to replicate the same in this game as well. However, the likes of Aaron Finch and Steven Smith will have to prove their worth in the shortest format and display their magic. They will be missing the services of Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa, but they still do have a lethal bowling attack.

Hello and a warm welcome folks! It’s time for the first T20I of this three-match T20I series between Sri Lanka and Australia at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The last time these two sides met Australia put on a dominant performance and won the series 4-1. Sri Lanka did put on a great show but failed to get over the line. However, things are different now and they will be hoping to roar in their own den and come out on top this time. Both teams are filled with power-packed players and we can expect nothing less than a cracker of a contest.

... MATCH DAY ...
