Australia beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets

Galle International Stadium, Galle

Right then! Australia go 1-0 up in this 2-match Test series. Sri Lanka have a couple of days off and they need to assess what happened and come back with a better plan. The second match will start on Friday, 8th July at 10 am IST (4.30 am GMT) Do join us for the build up as well. For cricketing lovers, there is a huge Test match between England and India coming up (the 5th Test match). You can join us there at 3 pm IST (9.30 am GMT) and join us early for the coverage as well. But from here, it is goodbye!

Dimuth Karunaratne, the skipper of Sri Lanka says that it is very disappointing as the play got over in three days. Mentions that the Australian batters did really well and as a batting unit they need to play better and put pressure on bowlers. Further says that with the young bowling attack they need to do better and do the job. Mentions that it is not easy to bat against Nathan Lyon and they made some bad decisions in the game.

Pat Cummins, the victorious skipper is in for a chat. He starts by saying it was an amazing win. Mentions, he could not believe the game eneded so quickly. Adds the bravery and the proactiveness shown by the batters has been outstanding over this match. Says, Green has been a whacker, and he has found it in his first knock. He proved to be the difference in the end.

Cameron Green wins the Player of the Match award for his incredible effort with the blade. Green says there are a few experienced guys in the camp and that helped him a lot. He aimed to be proactive and thought of playing some shots regularly to keep the pressure off him.

Stay tuned for the Presentation...

Earlier in the match, after winning the toss and electing to bat first! Sri Lanka were off to a decent start but once the spinners were introduced, the wickets started to fall. Nathan Lyon was in action and showed his class along with Swepson. They didn't allow the score to flow quickly and bundled out Sri Lanka for 212. Lyon ended with a five-fer while his companion finished with three wickets. In reply, it was Usman Khawaja first and then Cameron Green in the lower order along with Alex Carey, they played out what proved to be a match-winning innings and got a handy lead of more than 100. Australia were aware of the spin-friendly pitch and introduced Lyon again quickly after Starc's spell in the start which didn't work out. The magician was at work again with his crime partner and with Travis Head joining them. Australia ripped apart the Lankan lineup. In the end, Australia won without breaking much sweat.

So, Day 3 is called the moving day but it turns out to be the result day as well. Australia were batting at the start of the day and inside one session, we have seen a whole innings wipe away, thanks to some exception bowling spell from the Aussie spinners. Quality over quantity! This was proven in this match. Sri Lanka had more spinners but it was the experience and quality of Australia that has helped them take the lead. Lyon, Swepson and Head stuck to their plans throughout the process to bundle Sri Lanka below-par score and then, Australia needed just one over to get over the victory line.

Well, the outcome was inevitable. A comprehensive win for Australia. A clinical display from them and they take the lead in this two-match Test series. Smiles everywhere in the Aussie camp as Warner hits the winning runs and fist pumps in the air. Cummins has a big smile on his face. What a win this is for the visitors!

0.4 6

SIX! BANG! Here are the winning runs. David Warner finishes things off in style. It is tossed up, wide outside off. David Warner dances down the track, gets underneath it and smokes it over the long on fence to get his side over the victory line. AUSTRALIA WIN THE GAME BY 10 WICKETS!

0.3 4

FOUR! Fuller delivery on off, David Warner goes down on the one knee and reverse sweeps it towards the third man region for a boundary. They need one now.

0.2 0

Fuller one again, David Warner looks to slog sweep it but misses.

0.1 0

Starts with a fuller one outside off, David Warner looks to cut it but gets a bottom edge as the ball bounces towards the off side.

We are back for Australia's reply. The Lankan players are out in the middle. David Warner and Usman Khawaja are the openers for Australia. Ramesh Mendis to start with the ball.

...FOURTH INNINGS...

Sri Lanka scored 17 runs in this first over and it seemed like they will go with the aggressive route throughout but that was not the case. Once the spinners were introduced, there was no comeback for the hosts as no one showed any determination and fell into the trap one after the other. Now then, Australia need 5 runs to win! Big deal! Stay tuned as we will be back in a bit!

Take a moment and appreciate that spell from the 'GOAT', Nathan Lyon. He bowled from one end throughout the session and he was the one who started the downfall of Sri Lanka. He in tandem with Mitchell Swepson showed their spin magic and the Lankan batters were really feeling the heat against them. Travis Head came out of the syllabus as well. His spell of (2.5-0-10-4) just showed it was a classical spin bowling which was a route to bundle the opposition.

What a spell that was from the Aussie spinners. A spell which the great Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan will be really proud of! On the other hand, it was an abysmal batting show from Sri Lanka. This is also, the lowest number of overs Sri Lanka has ever faced in an innings.

Asitha Fernando is the last man in. Sri Lanka still trail by 1 run.

Lasith Embuldeniya walks in now.

Ramesh Mendis walks out to the middle.

Niroshan Dickwella comes in. He scored a half-century in the first innings and needs to do something similar here.

Mitchell Swepson gets a rest from his spell as Travis Head will replace him.

Dinesh Chandimal walks out now.

Is that out? There is an outside edge but it is referred upstairs to check if it is a bump ball. Soft signal is out. Oshada Fernando stands his ground. The replay shows there was a thick outside edge as confirmed by Ultra Edge. Out it is!

Halt in play! Marnus Labuschagne at short leg gets hit on the helmet and he has to go through a mandatory concussion test. He looks fine but looks like he needs a breather as he is seen walking off the field.

Drinks! Other than the first couple of overs, everything is going downhill for Sri Lanka! They have started to succumb against the spin and are losing wickets in a flurry. Australia will be really happy at the moment. Lyon is showing his experience yet again as he grabbed a couple already and will look to continue the good work. Sri Lanka trail by 50 runs. Also, Dhananjaya de Silva is the new man in.

Oshada Fernando comes in at number 4.

Kusal Mendis comes in now.

Mitchell Swepson comes into the attack.

It has been a great start for Sri Lanka so far. They are scoring at a run rate of around 7.50, that is incredible.

Nathan Lyon comes into the attack.

OUT! LBW! That is it for the Sri Lankan innings. This one was full and on middle and leg, Embuldeniya tries to flick it but gets beaten and gets hit on his pads. The Australians appeal for the LBW but the finger stayed down. Pat Cummins goes for the review and it works in their favour, as the Ball Tracking shows three reds to end this Sri Lankan innings. Travis Head steals the spotlight here with his 4-fer in just 2.5 overs.

...THIRD INNINGS...

Sri Lanka would be a tad disappointed with their bowling effort on Day 2, as they could've ended way early, but could not be disciplined throughout. Nonetheless, they would be happy to end things quite early on the moving day. The hosts will be back in no time with the blade to chase down the trail and put up a target for the Aussies. Stay tuned.

Australia walk out with a lead of 109 runs. After putting on a brisk 35 at end of Day 2, Lyon and Cummins were unable to expand their stand as much as they would've liked to. Australia have their noses in front here and would be hoping to display excellent spells with the ball just like the previous innings. Alex Carey and Cameron Green were the ones who put Australia in the driving seat.

Who will walk out now?

Asitha Fernando comes into the attack.

We are all set for the action of Day 3. The players are out in the middle. Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins will resume their innings. Ramesh Mendis to start the proceedings with the ball.

Breaking News - Angelo Mathews has tested positive for Covid. He will not take any further part in this match. Oshada Fernando is his replacement in this match.Pitch Report with Russel Arnold: There are lots of crumbling around, Ramesh and Lyon were effective from either side and there are places the bowlers can target. The batters stride out and find themselves in trouble. The real key is to go at the ball. If the batter is in the crease he will be in trouble.

Nathan Lyon is up for a chat. He says Green and Carey are young in Test cricket but he is very proud of them for the way they have performed. . Adds that as a bowler he wants to be on the mark and put the best ball out there. He says that the plan was always to put the pressure on the bat and to bowl well. Chuckles and says he enjoys batting.

Sri Lanka are playing with four spinners but are not optimizing the pitch to the best. That was a big difference in two days - how Lyon and Swepson operated and were so productive as compared to the Lankan spinners. Ramesh Mendis was the best of the lot and they will hope to take the remaining two wickets immediately. The forecast looks much better than we had on Day 2 and we hope there are no interruptions this time. Stay tuned for any other updates

The pitch is not the easiest to bat on but this mighty Aussie team have shown their batting skills on a difficult pitch and currently be ahead in the match. It was Usman Khawaja first and then Cameron Green played a brilliant innings along with Alex Carey to take the lead. There is not much batting left now but Cummins can try and hit a few lusty blows and add as many runs to the lead as possible.

Hello everyone! Welcome to the action of Day 3 of this first Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia. The game is slightly in the visitors' favor as they lead by 101 runs and with 2 wickets still in hand. The Aussies will be happy if Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon can grind more runs and breach the 150-lead. Sri Lanka on the other hand will hope to bundle them out quickly by taking the remaining wickets quickly.

... Day 3, Session 1...

Australia have put themselves in the driver's seat. A lead of over 100 will be already bothering the home team and the visitors are not done yet. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon will be looking to swell it further to push Sri Lanka further on the back foot. Friday is going to bring more engrossing Test cricket our way. It will be an early start. The first ball on Day 3 will be at 9.45 am IST (4.15 am GMT) but you can join us in advance for the build-up. Cheers!

It's a brave batting effort by the Australian team, especially from their lower-order batters. The day started with them trailing by over 100 runs and they lost Travis Head pretty quickly as well but then Cameron Green arrived at the crease with positive intent. He threaded three vital stands with Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc, and played a crucial role in helping Australia gain a handy lead. A special mention for Alex Carey who played his reverse sweeps with great aplomb and reminded us of Andy Flower. His quickfire knock propelled Australia as he put the Lankan bowlers to the sword.

End of Day 2 and it belonged to only two parties - Rain in the first session and Australia in the following two sessions. Sri Lanka were absent. In spin-friendly conditions, where the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath used to dominate the touring batters, the current crop of spinners failed to leave a mark. Bowling with consistent accuracy - an art that all the three genuine spinners lacked. To an extent, Ramesh Mendis did manage to gain some control, but overall, it was a dismal show from the Lankan spinners, especially in the afternoon session.

It's officially Stumps on Day 2. This was inevitable once they left the park so late in the evening. Right then, a lead of 101 for Australia and they will be immensely pleased with the outcome of this rain-hit day.

Bad light! The umpires have decided that the play cannot continue any further for now. The players are off the field. It's not Stumps yet but it's tough to see the light improving from here on.

The light meter is out! The umpires have checked the light and it seems fine for now! We are good to resume.

Nathan Lyon walks out to bat.

Jeffrey Vandersay comes to bowl!

DRINKS! Australia might have lost the wicket of Alex Carey, but they are still manoeuvring along nicely. Their lead is now 61 and they will be aiming to get a lead of 100 by the end of the day. Cameron Green is looking good in the middle and he is heading towards his ton accompanied by Starc who has scored 8 runs off 26 deliveries. Sri Lanka have all allowed Australia to build another partnership here. They need to grab quick wickets to stay in this game!

Lasith Embuldeniya comes to bowl now.

Another slight halt! Mitchell Starc has been struck on his helmet while trying to duck to a short ball. The physio is out there conducting the mandatory concussion test. Also, Mitchell Starc needs a new helmet!

Mitchell Starc seems to have cracked the bottom part of his bat. He has asked for a replacement.

Mitchell Starc is the new man in

Who will bowl from the other end? Asitha Fernando it is!

We are back for the final session on Day 2! 32 overs are still left to be bowled in this final session, let's hope we get to witness all of them. The players have made their way out to the middle. Alex Carey and Cameron Green will resume their batting for Australia. Ramesh Mendis will begin with the proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... DAY 2, SESSION 3 ...

The pitch is doing all sorts of things for the spinners, there is bounce and turn on offer. But the batters have found a way to tackle them. Jeffrey Vandersay and Dhananjaya de Silva were the wicket-takers, while Lasith Embuldeniya continues to struggle. Sri Lanka will need to pick wickets in a heap in the next session and not let Australia get away with a big lead. Do join us at 4.05 pm IST (10.35 am GMT) to see how the final session of the day pans out.

After a big delay, Sri Lanka began the proceedings perfectly on Day 2 as they got rid of Travis Head in the second over of the day. Post that, the overnight batter, Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green tackled the spin well. The duo stitched together 57 runs before Khawaja fell prey to Jeffrey Vandersay. He was dismissed for a well-made 71. The momentum had swung towards Sri Lanka but they failed to capitalize on that. Alex Carey joined Cameron Green and they scored runs at a brisk pace. Their hard work has put the visitors in the lead by 21 runs at the moment.

Session Summary - Overs - 27, Runs - 135, Wickets - 2. Australia's session, without a doubt! After the first session of Day 2, the visitors find themselves in a much stronger position. Alex Carey and Cameron Green have made batting look so easy and their unbeaten stand of 76 runs has put Sri Lanka under the pump.

Asitha Fernando comes back to bowl. 4-0-28-0 are his figures so far!

A mandatory concussion check for Alex Carey as he took a blow on the grille of his helmet. No issues. Smiles all around.

Lasith Embuldeniya is back on. 11-0-58-0 are his dismal figures so far.

Jeffrey Vandersay (6-0-33-1) comes back to bowl. He replaces Ramesh Mendis!

DRINKS! Sri Lanka have struck with two wickets and both the overnight batters have been dismissed but at the same time, Australia scored 71 runs in the last hour. Usman Khawaja reached his half century but could not convert it into a big one. Cameron Green is looking good and will hope that Alex Carey gives him support as they look to reduce the deficit further which is 43 at the moment.

Jeffrey Vandersay is off the ground, nursing his left thumb which is bleeding. Perhaps, he celebrated too hard. The replays show that he hurt his thumb while stopping the ball in the outfield.

Alex Carey walks in next. Australia trail by 55 runs.

Jeffrey Vandersay comes to bowl now.

Review! With 3 seconds left on the timer, Dimuth Karunaratne decides to take a review for an LBW decision against Cameron Green! The replay rolls in and the Ball Tracking indicates that it was the umpire's call on hitting the wickets. The on-field decision stands!

Lasith Embuldeniya (7-0-39-0) is brought into the attack.

Cameron Green walks out to bat at number 6.

It will be spin from the other end as well. Dhananjaya de Silva comes into the attack.

Finally, after a long wait, we are ready for some action on Day 2! The umpires have made their way out to the middle. The Sri Lankan players are out on the field as well. Usman Khawaja and Travis Head will resume their batting for Australia. Ramesh Mendis will begin the proceedings with the ball. Let's go!

UPDATE - 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT) - We're nearing the start time! The repair work is still on at one of the stands which collapsed due to heavy wind. The sightscreen was also damaged but it is now back in place. The groundsmen have done a commendable job. So far, the rain has also stayed away. Let's hope it stays that way.

UPDATE - 12.49 pm IST (7.19 am GMT) - The news we all have been waiting for is finally here! Play is set to begin at 1.45 pm IST (8.15 am GMT) with 59 overs to be played. Tea will be taken at 3.45 pm IST (10.15 am GMT), while the day's play will end at 6.00 pm IST (12.30 pm GMT), weather permitting.

UPDATE - 12.36 pm IST (7.06 am GMT) - We have good news, folks! The covers are being taken off and there is sunshine for the first time today. Let's hope we get some action soon.

UPDATE - 12.20 pm IST (6.50 am GMT) - No positive news till now, the rain continues to pour down but it's on-and-off in nature. On the brighter side, the winds have eased up a bit. Let's hope we get some good news soon. Fingers crossed!

Talking about Rangana Herath in the previous paragraph, let's have a look at the number of wickets he took in the 2016 Test series. He took a total of 28 wickets at an average of 12.75. He grabbed 9 in the first match, 6 in the second, and 13 in the final Test match. It's fair to say, the current Sri Lankan spinners are finding it tough to match his class. In this ongoing Test, Ramesh Mendis, and Jeffrey Vandersay have bowled at an economy of over 3 while Lasith Embuldeniya has bowled over 5. Clearly, the control is not there for now, but there is always hope on this helpful surface.

The waiting game for all of us continues, but let's rewind to the past and see what happened the last time Australia visited Sri Lanka! Australia had toured Sri Lanka back in 2016! It was a long tour, as they played 3 Test matches, 5 ODIs, and 2 T20Is. The visitors absolutely dominated the shorter formats. They clinched the ODI series 4-1, with George Bailey winning the Player of the Series award. They clean swept Sri Lanka 2-0 in the T20I series. Glenn Maxwell was awarded the Player of the Series then. But before the white-ball cricket, the two sides collided in the longest format of the game. There the visitors were handed a 3-0 defeat by Sri Lanka. The heroics of Rangana Herath helped the hosts complete this whitewash. Undoubtedly, he was named the Player of the Series and his class and control are missing in the current spin department, as we witnessed last evening.

UPDATE - 10.51 am IST (5.21 am GMT) - As we still wait for the inspection, here is a tweet from Roshan Abeysinghe - 'The rain has ceased but the winds in Galle is gale force. The start of day quite a long way away.' Not promising signs. Let's stay positive.

While we continue to wait for the start of the game, an interesting fact! Nathan Lyon grabbed his first five-fer on his Test debut at Galle in Sri Lanka way back in 2011. Eleven years later, Lyon still continues to be a real threat. We witnessed him take his 20th five-fer on Day 1 against the same opposition. Nine out of those 20 five-wicket hauls have come in Asia as he equalled the legendary Shane Warne's record of taking the most fifers in Asia (visiting bowlers in the continent). GOAT for a reason!

UPDATE - 9.53 am IST (4.23 am GMT) - A slight ray of hope, folks! It's not raining at the moment, but the wind continues to be intense. However, there has been a lot of water collected on the covers. There is an inspection set to take place at 10.45 am IST (5.15 am GMT). We will keep you updated!

UPDATE - 9.30 am IST (4.00 am GMT) - We witnessed a full day of cricket without any interruptions on Day 1. But unfortunately, the live visuals from the stadium show that there is a slight drizzle at the moment and the conditions are quite windy as well. The whole ground is covered and we are hearing that the wind is so intense that a small stand has just collapsed. Let's hope the weather clears up soon and we begin on time. Stay tuned...

Sri Lanka on the other hand need wickets and they need them quickly. They have 114 runs still in the bank and they have to make sure Australia do not run away with a big lead. Just like on Day 1, we can expect the spinners to play a crucial role once again. Let's see what we have in store in the first session of Day 2. Stay tuned!

Australia put on a clinical performance with the ball. They bundled out Sri Lanka for just 212. It was their spinners, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson who demolished the Sri Lankan batting lineup as they grabbed 8 wickets between them, with Nathan Lyon picking yet another five-fer. Coming to bat, they lost three wickets, but Usman Khawaja is looking solid at the moment. He along with Travis Head will want to bat deep and stitch a big partnership.

Hello and welcome back folks! It’s time for the second day of this first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia to get underway. We witnessed an intriguing Day 1 of this Test. A total of 13 wickets fell and it's Australia who have their noses slightly ahead in this game so far. Having said that, we can’t count Sri Lanka out completely. A few early wickets and they will be right on top.

... DAY 2 ...

That's all we have from the opening day of this Test match. 13 wickets fell, 10 belonging to the spinners and we are expecting this trend to continue on Thursday as well. The first ball on Day 2 will be at 10 am IST (4.30 am GMT) but you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!

Earlier in the morning, Dimuth Karunaratne won the all-important toss but his decision to bat first was not ably backed by his players. They started well in the first hour but then two needless shots resulted in two wickets. Thereafter, the Australian spinners turned on the heat in the afternoon session with Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson making full use of the helpful conditions. Just when the chips were down and surviving appeared next to impossible, Niroshan Dickwella walked in. 'Attack is the best form of defense' - Dickwella pulled out that old cliche from the closet and his fresh and positive approach gave wings to the Lankan innings. Although, despite his efforts, the home team put up only 212 runs on the board.

It was a rollicking start from Australia. The tourists amassed 47 runs from the first 9 overs as the Lankan spinners struggled. They bowled poor lines, poor lengths, too many boundary balls and there was no pressure exerted. Ramesh Mendis eventually struck some rhythm to remove David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne and they got a bonus run out to get rid of Steven Smith. Usman Khawaja is still out there, fighting out with his newly found technique against the spinners and he will have to keep that run out behind him quickly. If Australia manage to bat with authority on Day 2, not just this Test match, they will gain the momentum for the rest of the series.

A day that has belonged to the spinners comes to an end! There was no change in the script, we expected this Test match to be dominated by the spinners and that's happening. We would have called it Australia's day but they lost a couple of wickets too many, still, you can say that they are slightly ahead in this Test match. They trail by 114 runs and can put themselves in an advantageous position if they bat sensibly on Day 2. Sri Lanka would be ruing those missed stumping chances, against both the current batters, had Niroshan Dickwella collected the ball, the hosts would have been on top at the close of the day's play.

Steven Smith is still looking upset, sitting in the dressing room. He loves to bat but first injuries kept him out of a few games of the shorter version and now this run out. Poor chap.

Dhananjaya de Silva is into the attack now with two lefties in the middle.

Travis Head walks out next.

Mandatory concussion test for Niroshan Dickwella! He has been hit on the helmet on the previous delivery. It is a soft blow though and he looks fine to resume. Jeffrey Vandersay is into the attack now.

Steven Smith is the next man in.

Drinks break. Australia have started their innings on a positive note but Lanka would be happy to get rid of Warner who was looking quite dangerous. Sri Lanka need to tighten things up and build pressure on the batters with consistent lines and lengths, they have been off target so far and Dimuth Karunaratne would hope for a better performance from his spinners from hereon. Marnus Labuschagne has joined Usman Khawaja in the middle and he would be looking to get a good score under his belt, something he has not done in the subcontinent conditions consistently.

Marnus Labuschagne walks in next, at number 3. Australia trail by 165 runs.

Four different bowlers have bowled the first four overs. Will we see another change? Nopes, Lasith Embuldeniya will continue...

Dimuth Karunaratne is ringing in the changes. Ramesh Mendis comes into the attack as well.

That's it from Asitha Fernando then. Here comes Lasith Embuldeniya, the most experienced spin bowler in the Lankan XI. David Warner, wearing a floppy hat, is ready to face the challenge...

As expected, we have a spinner from the other end. It's Dhananjaya de Silva, not the one from the trio of genuine spinners that Sri Lanka have opted for!

70.5 W 0

OUT! BOWLED! Australia are bundled out! Sri Lanka have done well as they have not allowed the tail to wag much! Asitha Fernando again gets a good amount of inward swing, this is full and around middle. Mitchell Swepson is too late to get his bat down and the ball disturbs the stumps behind. Australia lead by 109 runs.

70.4 1

Full toss on the pads, flicked to fine leg for a single.

70.3 1

A mix up but Swepson makes his ground! A fuller ball, slanting around middle and leg. Swepson fails to flick it away and gets hit on the pads. The ball rolls to covers and there is a yes or no for a quick single. Swepson is rushing to the bowler's end and he makes his ground as Fernando misses his shy.

OUT! TIMBER! A beauty of a delivery from Asitha Fernando! Pat Cummins was rather expecting a short ball but this is a yorker, around off and swinging in. Pat Cummins hangs back as he looks to block it out but misses and the ball shatters the stumps. Good start by Sri Lanka.

OUT! LBW! Ramesh Mendis strikes and David Warner doesn't even bother to take the review! The natural variation for an off spinner is on display. Ramesh Mendis pitches it around off and it skids on after landing to beat the forward defense of Warner. He is rapped on the back leg and there is an appeal. The umpire raises his finger and Warner backs back disappointed. Sri Lanka needed this breakthrough! Perhaps, Warner was playing for the away spin as the seam of the ball suggested but it went on with the angle and brought his downfall.

The Australian inning is all set to begin! 29 overs are left in the day and it will be interesting to see how both teams approach this phase of the game. Have to say, it can turn out to be quite a crucial passage of play. The Sri Lankan players now make their way out to the middle. David Warner and Usman Khawaja are the openers for Australia. Asitha Fernando has a brand new ball in his hand. Let's play...

... Second Innings ...

Sri Lanka though have a decent score on the board now. It may not look big on paper but taking into consideration the pitch and loads of spin bowling options that Sri Lanka have, it will not be an easy task for the Aussies. It will be a big test for Australia but they will take confidence from their batting success under similar conditions in Pakistan. Can they pass the trial by spin here? We shall find out soon. Stay tuned.

A quick wrap to the Lankan innings after Tea! Nathan Lyon broke the dangerous-looking partnership between Ramesh Mendis and Dickwella in his first over of the evening session. Dickwella too could not add much after the break and departed after playing a handy knock of 58 for his team. Lyon eventually finished with his 20th Test fifer while Swepson took three wickets and overall, Australia would be pretty happy with their bowling performance.

Mitchell Swepson is back on. Can he finish things off in this over?

Asitha Fernando is the last man in.

Lasith Embuldeniya walks out next.

Jeffrey Vandersay walks out to the middle on his debut.

Huge shout for an lbw, not given! Looks to be high and it's spinning in too much as well. Anyway, Pat Cummins has decided to review. There is no bat involved as confirmed by UltraEdge! The Ball Tracking rolls and it shows that the impact is in line and the ball is hitting the stumps. So, the decision will be overturned. Ramesh Mendis has to walk back.

Nathan Lyon starts from the other end. So Australia, as expected, are starting with the combo of pace and spin after Tea.

We are back for the final session! The Australian players make their way out to the middle. Niroshan Dickwella and Ramesh Mendis also walk out to resume their innings. It will be the skipper, Pat Cummins to start the proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

… DAY 1, SESSION 3 …

Runs - 123, Wickets - 4! End of another engrossing session of Test cricket. Spin was always going to play a big part in this Test match and the Australian spinners, after not taking any wickets in the first session, managed to bag four in the afternoon. Two wickets each for Mitchell Swepson and Nathan Lyon but have to say, the knock from Dickwella has also kept Sri Lanka going on this tricky pitch. Other batters though could not do much in this middle session as just surviving on this pitch looks very tough. Ramesh Mendis has taken a leaf out of Dickwella’s book and they have stitched together an unbeaten 52-run stand. How many more can Sri Lanka score? Find out in the final session that begins at 3 pm IST (9.30 am GMT).

Mitchell Starc returns to bowl before Tea. 1 for 24 in his 7 overs so far. Can he get the ball to reverse?

A huge extended appeal for an lbw but the finger stays down. With two seconds left on the timer, Pat Cummins takes the review...

Ramesh Mendis is in next.

DRINKS! A productive hour of play for the visitors! They have taken three wickets and are on the top now with both spinners bowling effectively. However, Sri Lankan batters have adopted a positive approach with the bat and have scored 52 runs in the first hour. This is probably the way forward on this pitch which is showing all sorts of tricks. Niroshan Dickwella has played some aggresive shots but he has to make sure that he stays with Angelo Mathews who is looking solid out there.

Niroshan Dickwella walks out to face the hat-trick ball!

Dinesh Chandimal walks out at number 6.

Silly point comes in.

Spin from both ends now. Mitchell Swepson is back into the attack. Three overs for 9 runs so far.

Dhananjaya de Silva walks in next.

Is that out? Two noises there and David Warner has taken a great diving catch. The two umpires get together and want to check if that catch is taken cleanly or not. It is. Australia have a big breakthrough.

Pat Cummins to bowl from the other end. 6-3-12-1 are his figures so far.

Regarding 26.5 - The UltraEdge is shown now and there indeed was the involvement of the gloves. Eagle eye, Marnus!

Welcome back to the afternoon session! The Australian players are out there in the middle. Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews also walk out to resume their innings. It will be Nathan Lyon to start with the ball. Here we go...

… DAY 1, SESSION 2 …

Australia will be quietly pleased with the way this match has gone so far. All their bowlers have looked in control and stuck to good lines. They will be hoping for more of the same in the afternoon session and dislodging the current partnership quickly will be on top of their agenda as it involves two of Sri Lanka's most experienced players. Do join us at 12.40 pm IST (7.10 am GMT) for the post-Lunch session.

A fine two hours of Test cricket comes to a close. Sri Lanka won a crucial toss on this surface, and it was a no-brainer to bat first. However, losing two wickets, that too off needless attempts, would be hurting them. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc bowled disciplined lines and were quite effective. Nathan Lyon was introduced into the attack in the sixth over, and his first ball was enough to indicate what was to come. Plenty of spin and bounce on offer, and batting certainly is very tough, but credit to the Lankan batters for not losing a single wicket to spin in the morning session. Had Australia reviewed that decision against Dimuth Karunaratne in the last over, things could have been different though.

Mitchell Swepson to have a go now.

Angelo Mathews is the next man in.

Mitchell Starc is back into the attack. Four overs for 16 runs so far!

DRINKS! Both the Sri Lankan openers looked solid for the most part of the last hour but Pat Cummins has done well to get a much-needed breakthrough for the Aussies here! The pitch has shown signs of turn and bounce in the first hour itself and it looks like a tough task for the batters and they need to apply themselves here. Kusal Mendis joins his skipper now and both batters would be looking to take their team to Lunch without further damage.

Pat Cummins comes back into the attack, this time from the opposite end, replacing Mitchell Starc.

Concussion test, for Alex Carey. Extra bounce on the last delivery and he gets hit bang on the helmet while trying to gather the ball. The Australian physio rushes out and it's a quick test. Ready to resume...

As expected, Nathan Lyon has been introduced into the attack.

The ball has not moved much to bother the batters here. We might see Pat Cummins employing a spinner with this hard new ball soon.

Pat Cummins to speed in from the other end.

Right then, we're done with all the pre-match formalities and it's time for the real action to begin. The Australian players are spreading on the field and Mitchell Starc is marking his run-up. Out come the Sri Lankan openers, Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka. The Lankan captain had a tough time against Starc on the last tour of Australia here as he was dismissed five times by the speedster. All in readiness, here we go...

The players from both sides have lined up in the middle. It's time for the national anthems of both sides. Australia's first and then Sri Lanka's. We're done with the anthems and now the players are observing a minute's silence in the memory of our beloved Shane Keith Warne.

Pitch report - The surface looks fine and it's a typical Galle pitch. It's hard in nature but some of the cracks are moving already. Putting runs on the board will be the way forward. Spinners will dominate and the batters will have to work hard for their runs.

Australia (Playing XI) - David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (WK), Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne (C), Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal, Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Ramesh Mendis, Jeffrey Vandersay (On Test debut), Lasith Embuldeniya, Asitha Fernando.

Pat Cummins, the Aussie skipper, says he would have batted first as well but now hopes that there will be some swing early on. Smiles and adds that they have managed to put up a XI and informs that Travis Head has passed the fitness test and is playing. Further shares that their team combination is about two seamers, two spinners and a couple of all-rounders. Tells that it's a bit unfortunate to have Josh Hazlewood on the bench as they are going in with Mitchell Starc.

Dimuth Karunaratne, the captain of Sri Lanka, says that they know how the ball will behave on the last two days and hence this decision. He confirms the Test debut of Jeffrey Vandersay and informs that they are going with three genuine spinners and one seamer.

Toss - Up goes the coin, Pat Cummins calls it wrongly and SRI LANKA ELECT TO BAT!

Weather update - The forecast is expected to be good for the day but there were some early morning showers. As a precaution, we can see the covers out there, however, the main playing area is uncovered. Fingers crossed.

Shout for an lbw again, the umpire turns it down. This time definitely it's too high. Turn and bounce from around off, Jeffrey Vandersay hangs back to defend but misses and is hit high on the pads. Would have been the umpire's call had Australia reviewed. It's clipping the top of the middle stump, shows the Ball Tracking. Anyway, a successful over for Lyon.

53.5 W 0

OUT! LBW! Tossed up, landing a touch short around off and turning back in sharply. Mendis goes back inside the crease to play at it but misses and is pinged on the back leg. They appeal but the umpire doesn't agree. Cummins has a word with his players and then takes the DRS. The Ball Tracking shows that it's hitting the stumps. A good review, the bounce didn't play a part. No bat too. Mendis returns but he was involved in an excellent partnership with Dickwella.

NOT OUT! It's missing the stumps and Australia lose another review. In total FIVE LEG BYES get added to the Lankan score. Flighted delivery, full and around leg, Mendis tries to flick but misses. He is thudded on the pads and the ball deflects to covers. There is a big chorus for the lbw appeal as the batters attempt to steal a run. The fielder attacks the ball and scores a direct hit at the bowler's end. The ball deflects, beats the mid on fielder and goes to the fence. Pat Cummins is surrounded by his teammates and with two seconds left on the timer, he takes the DRS. The bat is quite far away from the ball, so there is no need to check the UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking, as informed earlier, shows that it's missing the stumps.

He shows great reflexes to go for the catch, and juggles as he falls down flat on the ground but somehow manages to stick it with his right arm near his chest. OUT! CAUGHT! What a stunner by David Warner! This is a big wicket of the Lankan skipper and Nathan Lyon strikes early after Lunch! Nice loopy delivery, fuller in length and on middle. It's the arm ball. Dimuth Karunaratne gets forward to defend it. However, he gets a big inside edge onto his pads. The ball loops up in the air in front of second slip and David Warner dives forward to take a one-handed stunner. They appeal but the umpire takes it upstairs to confirm whether the catch is clean or not. The replays confirm that it is a clean catch and Dimuth Karunaratne walks back disappointed. Later on, the replays show that all the close-in fielders were appealing for lbw and it was only David Warner who realized that there was a catching opportunity. Smiles all around in the Aussie camp.
