Right. That is all we have from this game. Sri Lanka will be pleased with this display and will look to wrap the series up in the next game, whereas, South Africa will look to bounce back. The second ODI will be played on Saturday, 04th September 2021 at 2.30 pm local (9 am GMT). You can tune in early for the buildup. Cheers!

Dasun Shanka, the Sri Lankan skipper, says this win was really pleasing. Mentions South Africa came into the game well but his bowlers did really well to take off the pressure. Adds that everyone contributed well and they built several partnerships in the middle which is a good sign. Also says he expected the ball to turn in the evening, but that was not the case. Adds they knew it is very hard to chase on this pitch and they were quite happy by putting up 300 on the board.

Keshav Maharaj (stepping up for Temba Bavuma, who got injured) says that the skipper Bavuma has gone for a scan of his fingers and hopes he is fine and comes back early. Adds he just tried to concentrate and luckily enough it worked in his favour. Mentions they had a really good preparation coming into this game. Praises his batters as they fought hard but in the end, praises the Sri Lankan bowlers for their effort.

Avishka Fernando is the Player of the Match for his excellent effort with the bat and getting his third ODI ton. He says that he was determined and happy that they won. He was not happy early on with his innings but he made sure he grew into his innings. Adds that he is very happy to contribute to the team.

... Stay tuned for the Presentation ...

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka decided to post a total for the visitors as they chose to bat first. They started well and kept the scoreboard ticking throughout the course of the innings. Avishka Fernando was the star for them, as the youngster smacked a wonderful 118 and he was well supported by Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva as their knocks helped Sri Lanka post a great total of 300. In the end, their bowlers backed up their solid batting display and that sees them take a lead in this series.

The bowling by Sri Lanka was good at the start, but they lost their way slightly in the middle overs as they were not able to sniff out the Saffa batters, but they bounced back at the right time towards the end of the game and have taken their side home. They took a wicket early on but found it hard after that and when Bavuma went back due to his finger injury, they saw that the door was ajar and slipped in. They took a couple of wickets post that and bowled very well to close the game out. It was about the spinners for them too, as Akila Dananjaya, Wanindu Hasaranga, Praveen Jayawickrama, and Dhananjaya de Silva bowled well and shared 4 amongst themselves. The pacers did not have a lot to do on this deck, but they wrapped the game up nicely, towards the end.

Rassie van der Dussen took charge after that and after Kyle Verreynne departed, Rassie and Heinrich Klaasen did well to steady the ship and settle in, as they also raised a 51-run stand, wherein Rassie also reached his fifty and they looked like they would take their team over the line, but Rassie departed at the wrong time and Sri Lanka knew they could sniff the visitors out of the game now. Klaasen tried hard to find the boundary and take his team over the line, but it was not meant to be as they missed out by 14 runs.

When you are chasing a total of 300 in a game, you need your openers to start off nicely so that the atmosphere in the camp is good and positive and that is what Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram did. They batted well and the scoreboard was ticking nicely too. Malan fell towards the end of Powerplay 1, but the duo of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma batted very well. They did well to keep rotating the strike and when needed, they would find the boundary too. They were going along nicely before Bavuma was struck on the finger from a throw and he had to retire hurt. Markram looked to be in control too, but on 96, he looked for a big shot and ended up giving a catch to Hasaranga, who needed no second invitation.

Commentary

The chase is set to begin. Sri Lankan players stride out to the middle. Followed by Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram, who come out to bat for South Africa. Dushmantha Chameera to start the ball.

Right then. Sri Lanka have posted a total of 300 runs. The visitors won't be happy with their bowling effort, but now, the onus will surely be on the batters to chase down the target and get a lead in this series. But will the South African batters rise to the occasion? All we can do is wait and find out. This is a day-night game, so dew could be a factor, which means, batting could get easier. At the same time, if the pitch gets slower, spinners come into play. Let's see what happens. Do join us for the chase on the other side.

The spinners dominated with the ball for the Saffas! The pacers could not trouble the batters in the opening phase of the game. They had no wickets under their belly until Aiden Markram drew first blood. Soon after, Keshav Maharaj got into the attack and left Sri Lanka two more wickets down. At this point, it looked like the visitors would look to make inroads in the match, but it was not to be. They were pushed back by some crucial partnerships in the middle. Maharaj ended his spell with two wickets to his name, also, he was very miserly. Aiden Markram and Tabraiz Shamsi ended with a wicket but the latter leaked way too many runs. It was surely not a day for the pacers. They struggled throughout the game. They could not stem the run flow, until, Rabada snared two wickets in the death overs.

A good show by the top-order for the hosts! This is something that Sri Lanka were looking for and they will be really happy with the effort of their batters. It all started with Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka who gave them a solid start. At the end of Powerplay 1, Sri Lanka were at 50/0. But then came a rough patch, when Fernando remained a spectator at one end and saw his team lose two wickets in quick succession. But the youngster Fernando remained really calm and focused on building partnerships, to take his team to safer shores. He did so brilliantly by putting up two more partnerships with Dhanajaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka. Fernando though could not continue till the end and had to walk back after scoring his 3rd ODI century. Although, Asalanka picked up things after that and came up with a composed knock of 72 runs, which is also his career-best. 90 runs came in the final 10 overs, which helped Sri Lanka to end their innings at 300/9.

Sri Lanka certainly would be the happier side after the first innings. They started brilliantly and they had the upper hand in this game throughout the first innings. South Africa fought hard till the end but could not hunt down the wickets to put the pressure on the hosts and let the opposition score freely and now their batters have the big task of chasing down 300.

OUT! RUN OUT! Two run outs in the last two balls of the innings and that closes out the innings of Sri Lanka. This looked like a carbon copy of the run out on the previous ball. Back of a length, around off, Chamika Karunaratne steps out and bunts this to long on. Again, they look for a couple of runs and this was never a double. Anrich Nortje does well to pick up and throw to Rabada again, who whips the bails off quickly as Akila Dananjaya is short. Given out by the on-field umpire. SRI LANKA END ON 300/9!

Who will walk out next? It is going to be Akila Dananjaya.

49.51W

OUT! RUN OUT! Easily done. On a length, around off, this is drilled to the long on region. The batters want the second run. Anrich Nortje runs in, collects the ball and throws it to Rabada, who gets the ball and whips the bails off. Dushmantha Chameera is well short.

49.44b

FOUR BYES! It worked out nicely, in the end, for the Lankans. A length-ball, on the middle and leg pole, Chamika Karunaratne swings but misses. The ball hits the leg pole, but it will not matter as this was a Free Hit. The ball runs away to the fine leg region, where Temba Bavuma runs to his right, slides, and stops the ball. The third umpire has a look and it is seen that Bavuma's foot was in contact with the ropes, when he had the ball in hand. Four byes signalled.

49.43nb

NO BALL! Ahhhh, just the last thing that the Saffas needed here. A fuller-ball, around off, whipped through mid-wicket for a couple of runs. The on-field umpire calls it a no ball as Rabada has overstepped. Free Hit coming up...

49.30

A slower short one, around off, Chamika Karunaratne looks to hook this one away but misses.

Who will walk out at number 9? It is going to be Dushmantha Chameera.

49.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Similar to the previous delivery, but this time, Charith does not get the required distance on this. Short again, around off, Charith Asalanka again lines up to the play the pull shot, but gets a top edge. This time, the ball only manages to go the left of the keeper, Heinrich Klaasen, who moves that side and makes no mistake. Second one for KG!

49.14

TOP EDGE AND FOUR! Just the start that Sri Lanka would have wanted to the final over. Rabada hurls across a shortish ball, around off, Charith Asalanka looks to hook this one away but the ball takes the top edge and goes over the keeper and runs away to the ropes.

48.46

SIX! A very loose ball this late in the innings. Looked to be above waist height but the umpire does not signal anything. A full toss on the body, Charith Asalanka swivels and pumps this one all the way over fine leg for a biggie.

48.34

FOUR! He gets done by the spin there. On a length, on the leg pole, Charith Asalanka whips this towards deep mid-wicket. Kyle Verreynne runs to his left, but overruns, and the ball lands and spins, which deceives him. He slips trying to stop and turn back as the ball goes past him to the ropes.

48.21

OUT! BOWLED 'EM! Rabada gets his first wicket. Wanindu Hasaranga is not able to go hard and provide that final push from his side. He tried to force the issue but he just did not get going. A yorker, speared in, around middle and leg, Wanindu Hasaranga moves leg side and looks to dig this one out, but the ball takes the outside edge and crashes into the stumps behind.

47.65wd

FIVE WIDES! A poor delivery from Rabada! Slips in a fuller ball down the leg side, Wanindu Hasaranga leaves it alone and the keeper is not able to stop this as well. The ball races away to the ropes.

DRINKS BREAK. This has been a good start to the run chase by South Africa. Yes, they did lose Malan towards the end of Powerplay 1, but the duo of Bavuma and Markram has weathered the storm and would look to continue. Sri Lanka have bowled well so far, but have not tasted a lot of success, in terms of wickets. If they can snare a couple of wickets now, the pressure will be on the Saffas. 207 more needed in 198 balls and this game could go either way. Should be an interesting phase of play.

49.43nb

OUT! RUN OUT! Kagiso Rabada scores a direct hit and Shanaka has to depart. He thought he was in. Also, there were no celebrations from Rabada. Everyone thought Shanaka was safe but that was not the case. Back of a length and on off. Asalanka hangs back and defends it back to the bowler. Shanaka has already taken off for a single, but hears a no from the other end and he turns back to get to safety but he got a little too late. Rabada collects the ball, turns, and hits the wickets at the non-striker's end. The umpire takes it upstairs to confirm. The replays roll in and show that the batsman was well outside the crease. The final decision is out.

The openers for Sri Lanka, Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka make their way out into the middle. As expected, Kagiso Rabada will make use of the new ball. Here he comes, speeding in...

Time for the national anthems now. First, it will be South Africa's, followed by Sri Lanka's.

Temba Bavuma, the South African skipper, is up for a chat. He says, they were also looking to bat first. But they don’t have that option now and would look to do well with the ball.

Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan skipper, is up for a chat. He says, they will opt to bat first. Adds he is very happy to get runs on the board. Mentions the preparations have been really well, as a local tournament just got over a while back and the boys are ready for the series.

PITCH REPORT - This pitch looks very good but when you move closer, there is some moisture on the deck and the ball will grip early on. The batters can still play with freedom, but they will have to work slightly hard for the same.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Aiden Markram, Janneman Malan, Temba Bavuma (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne, Heinrich Klaasen (WK), Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Avishka Fernando, Minod Bhanuka (WK), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka (C), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Akila Dananjaya, Praveen Jayawickrama.

TOSS - We are all in readiness for the flip of the coin. Up it goes and falls in the favour of the hosts. SRI LANKA WILL BAT FIRST!

WEATHER - There were some scares earlier as the weather in Colombo was slightly iffy with grey clouds hovering around, but, for now, it looks like the sun is out and we will have the toss at the designated time.

Hello and a warm welcome to all! It's time for the first ODI between Sri Lanka and South Africa. Both the teams are placed 11th and 10th in the ODI Super League points table and would look to consolidate and use this series as a ladder to move up the table. Sri Lanka have been in a transitional phase and would be eager to get back to winning ways and climb up in the points table. Whereas, South Africa will be eyeing to win this series after a 1-1 drawn ODI series against Ireland. Who will come out on top? We shall find out soon, as the toss is not far away.
