West Indies beat New Zealand by 8 wickets

Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica

Kane Williamson is handed the trophy and now the other players join him as they pose for the cameras. Right then! Done and dusted with the T20Is and New Zealand take the series home. It's time for the 3-match ODI series! The first match will be played on 17th August at 11.30 pm IST (6 pm GMT). Do join us early for the build up as well. Cheers!

Glenn Phillips is the PLAYER OF THE SERIES for his 134 runs at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 171. He says it feels good to come to Sabina Park and play well in front of an amazing crowd and amazing people. Says that they don’t know what the situation is and he backs his skill set and if the ball is to be put away he makes the most of it. Claims that they have a strong batting line up and with Neesham coming in towards the end he knows he can play freely. Goes on to mention that the bowlers have been the icing on the cake and have been doing well recently. Believes that they will come back strongly.

Brandon King is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH (53 runs off 35 balls). He says it is very special to do this at home in front of the supporters and his family was also present.  Mentions that consistency is the key and he wants to give the team a good start. Credits the bowlers by saying that they did an excellent job and made their job easier. Claims that his plan is the same no matter the total and that is to get a good start and set a platform. Adds that Brooks played excellently and understood the game. He didn’t take any risk and they batted well together. Admits that it is good to win leading to the World Cup and feels that they played well all around.

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand starts by congratulating the Windies for the win. Says West Indies executed the plans well and outplayed them. Adds there is excitement while playing with this group. Mentions it's good to see the team progress and the focus has been always there. Shares that the World Cup is on the back of their mind but they keep thinking of the series and now they look forward to the ODI series.

Rovman Powell, the skipper of West Indies, says it is a dream to play for West Indies and captain in front of the crowd. Adds last night he asked the players for the support and they gave him. Shares that they talked about changing the bowlers and not loading them with 2-3 overs on a trot. It helps to keep them fresh. Thanks the crowd for their support. Applauds the effort of King, he says he played well and Brooks complimented him very well.

Presentation coming up...

New Zealand had something to bowl at but the bowlers were not up to the mark, the spinners especially. Kane Williamson will feel they could have taken the game deeper if the bowlers kept it tight. They were either too short or too full and were taken to the cleaners. Not the best of performance from the Kiwis but this shows there is still room for improvement. Earlier, New Zealand posted a par total. Only Glenn Phillips made a significant effort with the bat while the others struggled. Credit to the Windies bowlers who were tight and chipped in with wickets at regular intervals. It turned out to be an easy chase as the Kiwis found it hard to get the opening wicket and that took the game away.

A thumping win for West Indies! They have done well to avoid the whitewash. West Indies will have something to cherish and now will head into the ODI series with a positive mindset. It felt like West Indies could find it hard to bat on this sluggish pitch but the openers were absolutely brilliant getting a century partnership. Brandon King was the aggressor while Shamarh Brooks played the second fiddle. Both hit the loose balls and kept the required run rate in check. King fell after his fifty but by then they required a run-a-ball. Rovman Powell and Shamarh Brooks, in the end, chased down the target with ease.

We are back for the run chase. The New Zealand players make their way out to the middle. Shamarh Brooks and Brandon King will open the innings for West Indies. New Zealand will begin with spin as Michael Bracewell has been given the ball here.

... RUN CHASE ...

Right then, West Indies have an opportunity here to get a much-needed win under their belt. New Zealand will be looking to take wickets early to build some pressure. We are in for an exciting second half to the game.

Akeal Hosein walks up for a quick word. He says he would have taken this bowling performance at the start of the day but feels he has given 7-8 runs more. Adds that he just tries to be clear and execute his plan. Shares that in the Powerplay they might get hit but he just thinks about the next ball. He continues to say that building partnerships will be the key for the Windies to win.

West Indies started this game completely contrary to their performance in the first two games. They bowled with great control and were really disciplined all innings. They built up the pressure and never let the New Zealand batters get going. Dominic Drakes has justified his selection in the team with an outstanding performance bowling at the start and towards the death. He ended up conceding just 19 runs in his 4 overs and taking a wicket. The spinners bowled well with Akeal Hosein picking up two crucial wickets and Hayden Walsh chipping in with one. Odean Smith was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets for 29 runs. They will now look to come out and perform with the bat.

New Zealand got off to a really watchful start and were looking to rotate the strike rather than go for boundaries. They seemed to be trying to analyze the wicket but the slow nature of the pitch never allowed them to get any sort of momentum. All the batters got off to starts but never look settled at the wicket. Glenn Phillips was the only one who showed any sort of intent in the game and scored 41 runs of 26 deliveries to keep the scoreboard moving. The strong middle order did not click and could not provide their team with a much-needed impetus towards the end of the innings. In the end, there were unable to cross the 150 mark.

This does not look like a hefty total with 145 on the board and New Zealand will definitely feel they are a few runs short here. However, the pitch seems to be a little slow and we may not be surprised if West Indies have a tough time getting runs too. This is a good opportunity for the Windies to seal a consolation win but New Zealand will know that their opponents have not been in good batting form.

Samuel Badree is pitchside. He says that the sky is clear and there is a gentle cool breeze blowing across the stadium. He says it is the same surface as the previous two games. Adds the pitch is quite dry and there are cracks, the spinners will have an impact and so will the slower balls. Says the batters can score runs freely too and he expects a good encounter between bat and ball.

Rovman Powell will captain the West Indies today and he says playing for the West Indies is a dream but captaining the team in front of the home crowd is also a dream come true. Informs there are four changes. Admits it is difficult to lose the previous two games but it gives an opportunity to improve. Shares that the Kiwis batted well but they gave too many freebies in the last game. Hopes the guys can rectify things.

Kane Williamson the captain of New Zealand says they will have a bat. Explains that the condition is good and the surface is the same as the last game hence they chose to bat first. Says that they have a good team but it is about improving and adjusting which enables them to keep playing better cricket. Confirms that they have one change as Lockie Ferguson comes in for Trent Boult.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King (In place of Kyle Mayers), Shamarh Brooks, Devon Thomas (WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Dominic Drakes (in place of Nicholas Pooran), Rovman Powell (C), Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Akeal Hosein (In place of Jason Holder), Alzarri Joseph (In place of Obed McCoy), Hayden Walsh.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Martin Guptill, Devon Conway (WK), Kane Williamson (C), Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson (In place of Trent Boult).

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favor of New Zealand. They have elected to BAT first.

New Zealand have been outstanding in white-ball cricket this year. They are unbeaten in the 16 games they have played out of which they have played 9 T20Is. They will be eager to continue this run past the upcoming World Cup. They seem to have a balanced squad at their disposal and will go into the tournament as one of the favorites.
