Right then! That is it from this match. West Indies have a chance to level up the series. The second T20I is on Saturday, 13th August at 12 am IST (6.30 pm GMT, previous day). Join us for the build up as well. Goodbye!

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand says that it is nice to get a win and he is pleased with the performance of the team. Says that he is well aware of the hitting ability of the West Indies batters and that they are capable of amazing things. He states that is happy that they managed to secure the win. Says that everyone has a role to play in the team and is happy that he was able to contribute. Says that the cameos towards the end helped them put up a challenging total and the bowlers did well to stay calm and execute their plans well.

Nicholas Pooran, the skipper of West Indies. He says they did well to take the game till the last over. Says the last over took the game away while Neesham was batting. Says that if they could have restricted them to 175 they were in the game. Says in hindsight it was not an easy pitch as Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi bowled really well and there was turn on this wicket. Credits the middle order batter for playing well and getting them close to the total. Mentions Romario Shepherd and Odean Smith for the hitting ability and for keeping them in the game. Once again mentions that had they restricted the opponents to 175 they may have been able to achieve the target. Says the batters made some mistakes and gives Shimron Hetmyer as an example saying that he hit the ball in the air and next time he would probably play along the ground. Continues to say that batters will keep getting better and they are quite confident that things will improve.

Mitchell Santner is the MAN OF THE MATCH. He says it was a good wicket as there was some spin on offer. As a unit, they picked up wickets at regular intervals and that was key. Adds that he played a lot of cricket here, in the Caribbean Premier League at Trinidad and that gives an idea of what kind of length works. Shares that it was key to pick up wickets at regular intervals. On Kane Williamson, it is massive to have him back. He controlled the innings well. Applauds James Neesham's innings as well.

...Presentation coming up...

New Zealand will not be that disappointed. Although they were some fireworks going on in the final phase. New Zealand kept their cool and executed their plans. They did well to pick wickets at regular intervals and even Kane Williamson used his five bowlers really well. Mitchell Santner was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped three wickets. They too just like West Indies put in some wonderful effort on the field. Earlier, New Zealand scored a decent total on a good pitch. Thanks to the innings from Devon Conway and Kane Williamson. The late flourish from James Neesham proved to be the potential match-winning one as they scored 34 in the last two overs. The bowlers were consistent in their lines and did well to not allow any partnerships apart from the last one.

West Indies will feel they left a bit too much for the all-rounders to finish the game. They are still not able to find the best place for their big-hitters. They keep chopping and changing just like we saw them do against India. There is no clear role for the batters other than to go out and go big, which isn't working for them right now. It was something similar in this match, they bat deep and the likes of Jason Holder. Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd and Odean Smith showed that they have the capabilities. However, in the end it was just too much for the finishers to breach the target.

New Zealand would have had their heart in the mouth looking at the way Odean Smith and Romario Shepherd were batting. The result could have gone either way right till the end. However, the bowlers have done the job and New Zealand lead the 3-match T20I series as they go 1-0 up.

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The players are out in the middle. Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks are the openers for the Windies. Trent Boult to start with the ball.

...THE CHASE...

Right then, The game is set for the West Indian big-hitters to come and put up a show. This is a high-scoring venue and they will be looking to get the most from this good wicket. New Zealand have their bowling big guns back and will be silently confident that they will be able to defend this target.

Odean Smith is up for a chat. He says apart from the last couple of overs it was good bowling from them. Shares that they had some luck on the field. Informs it is his home ground and he knows the conditions well. On the Hat-trick ball, he says he wanted to go for the yorker but the skipper said no and he then went for a widish delivery. Mentions that this is a high scoring ground and if they set-up properly, and get a good start, they can win.

West Indies bowlers could not get early wickets but they kept working for it. Odean Smith then dismissed the openers in two deliveries and suddenly they seemed to get more control. The break was good as they returned to pick some crucial wickets They would be absolutely thrilled with their catching though. They took quite a few blinders in the field and that was partially the reason for New Zealand not getting out of reach. They will be slightly disappointed with their death bowling as they conceded 34 runs in the last two overs and that took New Zealand to a decent total.

The visitors started well with a 62-run opening partnership. Devon Conway was going well and scored 43 up the order. Once the openers were dismissed in consecutive deliveries, Kane Williamson steadied the innings along with Glenn Phillips. The latter was dismissed right after the break and despite Kane Williamson’s well-made 47, New Zealand could not get ahead of the game as they kept losing wickets. An attacking cameo from James Neesham as he scored 33 of just 15 deliveries, pushed them beyond the 180 mark.

New Zealand will be unsure about the score they have put up here as they have 185 on the board. The pitch looks good to bat on and they would have probably hoped for a bit more. The halt in play seemed to have broken their momentum bit. West Indies will be happy with their bowling effort apart from the last over and will know that they have enough batting to get over the finish line.

We are all set for the action. The players are out in the middle. The Windies players take the knee to support the 'BLM' movement. Martin Guptill and Devon Conway are the openers for New Zealand. Kyle Mayers to start with the ball. Here we go...

Phil Simmons is up for a chat. He says they need to recognize how they want to play. Adds that there is a lot of pressure on Nicholas Pooran after the India series but he is learning quickly. Shares that they are working on how to play the middle phase and there will be bounce here so they hope to do better. Admits the pace bowlers need to play with pressure. It was hard against India but they need to do better against the Kiwis.

PITCH REPORT - Daren Ganga is pitchside. He says it is dry and hard. Not a lot of green grass and expect there to bounce. The average score here is 134. Expects an even contest between bat and ball.

Kane Williamson, the skipper of New Zealand. He says it is important to get balance and break as all the players are in different stages of their life. It was nice to be at home and get some break. Informs there are few changes from the game they had against Netherlands.

Nicholas Pooran, the captain of West Indies. He says they will bowl first as the conditions are new for them. Says it is different from Miami and the conditions suit the seamers more so they want to capitalize on that by bowling first. Says that they have been playing a lot of cricket and some of the guys are rested. Continues to say that they have a lot of reserve players and they can put together a good composition and guys are eager to take the opportunity. Says that the team spoke about building partnerships, winning crucial moments and says most importantly it is an opportunity for the young players to gain knowledge and experience. About the team he says that there is one spinner and he can not recall the whole team.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Martin Guptill, Devon Conway (WK), Kane Williamson (C), Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks, Devon Thomas (WK), Nicholas Pooran (C), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Odean Smith, Romario Shepherd, Obed McCoy, Hayden Walsh.

TOSS - West Indies have won the toss and will BOWL first!

West Indies, on the other hand, find themselves racing against the clock to get their team in place and to get all their players back in form. They have shown glimpses of talent and ability, but they lack consistency. They have match-winners throughout their lineup, yet there are days when all of them fail to click. However, if that switch were to come on, this young West Indian side could prove to be devastating in the World Cup. The team banks heavily on their all-rounders and they bat deep. It will be interesting to see how they face up to their newest opponents, after their recent series defeat to India. They favor this format and if a renaissance of West Indian cricket is to be seen, it will most likely start from T20 cricket. It is hot in Sabina Park despite being cloudy and there is always a chance of rain. The only rain we really want to see though is when it is raining boundaries. Stay tuned as we bring you the toss and other updates…
