Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe by 8 wickets

Harare Sports Club, Harare

That's all we have from this lopsided game. The last ODI is on Thursday, 9th June 2022, at 12.45 pm IST (7.15 am GMT). You can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!

Ibrahim Zadran (120*) is the Player of the Match! The opener says that he wanted to play his natural game. Adds that the partnership with Rahmat was wonderful and he really enjoys batting with him. Mentions that they got 20 points in the Super League and they want to play positive cricket to win the next game as well.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the captain of Afghanistan, says that he is very happy with the win and the way his team is performing at the moment. Adds that they wanted to get all 30 points from this tour and they will be targeting 10 more in the next game. When asked about making changes to his winning XI for the next game, Shahidi replies that he will think about it in the coming days.

Craig Ervine, the captain of Zimbabwe, says that they knew the pitch flattens out in the afternoon and that's why it was important to get partnerships. Feels that they had a reasonable start but didn't kick on afterwards. Shares that this pitch was much better than the first game and 260-270 would have been competitive. Emphasizes on the getting the partnerships and this is the area they need to work on.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

Earlier in the match, Fazalhaq Farooqi was exceptional with the new ball and got plenty of movement. Zimbabwe stuttered at the start but then recovered through a few partnerships. Innocent Kaia, Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl played handy knocks, but the innings lacked the overall momentum to post a challenging total on the board.

Zimbabwe were listless with the ball, and they weren't great with their ground fielding either. Yet another disappointing outing for them. On a surface, that had something for the pacers, especially with the new ball, the likes of Blessing Muzarabani and Tendai Chatara didn't find enough to trouble the batters, and the rest of the bowlers also struggled for rhythm and penetration. Plenty of work to do for the hosts to improve their game in both the facets of the game.

Chasing a below-par target, the Afghans did lose Rahmanullah Gurbaz for yet another low score but Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah batted positively and helped Afghanistan navigate through Powerplay 1 without any more damage. The number of boundaries that the Afghan batters scored early in the innings was the main highlight, and that, in a way, never allowed Zimbabwe to exert any pressure. Thereafter, the duo raised a record stand for the second wicket and put the chase to bed. Zadran notched up his maiden ODI hundred in the process, but Rahmat missed out on yet another ton on this tour, this time by 12 runs.

Easy victory for Afghanistan. A bit boring in terms of competition but certainly commanding from Afghanistan's point of view. Another 10 points for them, and they have strengthened their spot at number 3 on the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-2022/23 table.

Drinks break. Afghanistan are in the driving seat at the moment. Ibrahim Zadran seems to be settled in and would hope to make his innings count. Zimbabwe, on the flip side, have not been great with the ball. They have brilliant individual players but have been unable to operate as a team. FIVE WIDES! Not the start Zimbabwe were looking for! The bouncer goes wrong, it's way down the leg side, away from the batter and the keeper. The ball scoots away to the fine leg fence.

Welcome back. 229 is what Afghanistan will be after to win this match and take an unassailable lead in the 3-match series. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are the Afghan openers. It is going to be Blessing Muzarabani to bowl the first over. Can he get the new ball to move around? Let's find out...

... CHASE TIME ...

The initial phase was expected to be a tricky one for the batters and the Afghan pacers did well to capitalize on that. It was the new ball doing all the talking and the hosts were under the pump from the word go. The spinners though could not continue to restrict the run-flow, as one might say they were taken for aplenty but did come back with crucial wickets. Fareed Ahmad was the pick with his three-fer. Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan took a brace each. The onus now is on their batters to chase down this target and seal the series for Afghanistan. Who will get over the line? To find out, join us for the second essay shortly.

Well, Zimbabwe repeated the same mistake they did in the first ODI. Their innings lacked valuable partnerships which could well be the cause of their downfall. The hosts were off to a sedate start. Ervine and Kaia took time to settle in the middle but once they did, Ervine lost his focus and yet again the skipper could not make the most of his start. After this wicket, Zimbabwe saw a good patch with Wesley Madhevere scoring briskly. The batters got good starts but were unable to make it count. It was the stand between Raza and Kaia of 67 runs that stood out for the hosts, where the latter racked up his maiden half century. Once, this stand was broken they started losing wickets in a flurry. In the end, Ryan Burl played a gritty knock to add some impetus to the scoring rate.

Hosts end on a brighter note! Zimbabwe added some crucial runs in the death overs, as Ryan Burl has propelled his side to 228 with his 61-ball 51. Afghanistan would be a shade disappointed as they let Zimbabwe bat their full quota of 50 overs after having them on the bat.

NOT OUT! Shout for an lbw, the finger has gone up. On the advice of Ryan Burl, Tanaka Chivanga takes the referral. It's a well-served yorker again by Fazalhaq Farooqi. Regis Chakabva fails to read the movement. He gets forward tamely, trying to push it away but it jags back in to beat his blade and pings him on the back pad. The game is set to begin. The Afghanistan players are seen to be in a huddle, before they spread out and take the field. Followed by Regis Chakabva and Innocent Kaia who walk out to open for Zimbabwe. It will be Fazalhaq Farooqi to start with the new ball. Here we go...

Blessing Muzarabani is in for a quick interview. He says that they didn't have any long partnership yesterday but they'll try to do their best for today. Mentions that last time he failed to bowl the fuller length but this time he will try for more fuller for better results.

Craig Ervine, the captain of Zimbabwe is in for a chat. He says they are happy to bat first. Although the guys need to work hard against the new ball. Mentions, they restricted them during the most part of the bowling and slipped out in the death overs. They will hope to work on it. Ends by saying they go in as an unchanged side.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the skipper of Afghanistan says they will bowl first. Adds looking at the surface it looks better than the last match but still the first 10 overs would be crucial. Adds the morale in good in the dressing room and will hope to make the most of the momentum.

PITCH REPORT - There is a bit of grass on the deck, we can surely see the seam doing its job. Mentions, winning the toss is going to be interesting. Overall, it looks like a batting surface today but with the overhead conditions the winning captain would prefer to field first.

Zimbabwe (Unchanged playing XI) - Regis Chakabva (WK), Innocent Kaia, Craig Ervine (C), Wesley Madhevere, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Ryan Burl, Donald Tiripano, Tendai Chatara, Tanaka Chivanga, Blessing Muzarabani.

Afghanistan (Unchanged playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Fareed Ahmad.

TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in favour of Afghanistan. They have elected to BOWL first.

During the chase, Zimbabwe were unable to stitch crucial partnerships in the middle and would be hoping that their batters are able to put up a better performance this time around. The Afghanistan bowlers were on the money and Nabi capitalized on it by taking a four-fer to get their noses in front. Will Afghanistan continue on their merry way and seal the series? Or will Zimbabwe grab some crucial points out of this encounter? We shall find out soon, as the toss isn't far away. Stay tuned.

Hello and a warm welcome to all! It is now time for the second ODI between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. The hosts come into this game on the back foot as Afghanistan lead the series 1-0. Zimbabwe did brilliantly with the ball initially in the last game but could not keep up with the Afghan batters as the match progressed. One could say, it was Rashid Khan's knock that proved to be the difference in the end.
