Commentary

That is that from this match. Bangladesh once again have dominated the home team and are looking too strong for them. The second T20I is on Friday, 23rd July 2021 at 12.30 pm local (10.30 am GMT). Do join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!

Mahmudullah, the winning captain of Bangladesh, (on his promotion in the batting order) says that the situation was such that they needed 8-run-an-over and he wanted to show some intent. Credits the openers for a superb start and praises the bowlers for coming back strongly. Adds that if you look at the stats, the chasing team has won the last 7-8 games here and also the wicket was looking good for batting. Adds that they have a good batting depth, so chasing is always a good idea. Hopes that they will come with the same intent in the next game.

Soumya Sarkar is chosen for the Man of the Match award for his all-round show.

Sikandar Raza, the captain of Zimbabwe, says that they were looking at 170-plus but they fell short but feels that they have plenty to gain from this match. Adds that the lower order and the middle-lower order didn't fire and not to bat the last over was criminal. Tells that if they avoid the mistakes done in this match, they will be good to go in the next match. Opines that they have to stick to their bowling plans a bit longer and not panic. Hopes they will be a lot calmer in the next game, especially at the death. Wants to stick to his plans and attack the batsmen with the new ball.

Presentation time...

Zimbabwe have themselves to blame for this loss. They started brightly with the bat and were going great guns with Regis Chakabva leading the charge. At the halfway mark, the hosts were 91/2 and were looking set to reach a total close to 200. However, things changed drastically after that. The Bangla Tigers roared back into the match and started to pick wickets at regular intervals. All of a sudden, Zimbabwe lost the plot and their innings nosedived. In the last 10 overs, they managed only 61 runs and ended up losing all the 8 remaining wickets. A big collapse and as a result, Bangladesh didn't have a big target to chase.

A commanding win for Bangladesh and they take an early lead in the series once again. In pursuit of 153, the Bangla openers smashed a century stand and put the chase to bed very early. The pair of Sarkar and Naim started cautiously in the first three overs but then opened their arms. They played plenty of delightful shots on their way to a match-winning partnership. Zimbabwe's bowling was flat, to say the least as they struggled for breakthroughs. They did show some intensity in the field towards the end but the match had already slipped away from them by then.

Commentary

The Zimbabwe players have spread out on the field. Mohammad Naim and Soumya Sarkar are the opening batsmen for Bangladesh. Blessing Muzarabani has been given the ball to start proceedings. A wide slip in place, let's begin...

So, here we go. We are back for the run chase. It will be interesting to see if the star man Tamim not being there makes any difference. Also, Zimbabwe would feel they are at least 30-40 runs short given the way they started their innings. We will find out as we go along as to how this one unfolds.

Right then, 153 needed for Bangladesh to win. Have Zimbabwe put enough runs on the board to give their bowlers a chance or will Bangladesh run away with this one as well? Stay tuned to find out as we will be back in a jiffy.

Bangladesh did not start particularly well with the ball even though Mustafizur Rahman got a wicket in the second over. It took them time to break the 2nd wicket partnership and once Shakib Al Hasan got Wesley Madhevere, they kept on picking wickets regularly and crawled their way back into the game. Shoriful Islam bowled beautifully and Shakib Al Hasan was consistent as usual. In the end, the Fizz cleaned up the tail and the visitors would be happier of the two teams going into the break.

Excellent comeback by Bangladesh in the second half of the match as they picked up 8 wickets for just 61 runs in the last 10 overs. Zimbabwe got off to a brisk start and even though they lost a wicket in the second over, Regis Chakabva kept on hammering the Bangladeshi bowlers all over the place and he had support from Wesley Madhevere. Then Shakib Al Hasan came in and dismissed Wesley Madhevere to break the 64-run stand. Regis Chakabva was dismissed soon after, courtesy of an excellent piece of work from Nurul Hasan. After that Dion Myers was the only one to make an impact with the bat and Zimbabwe ended up getting bowled out with a sub-par total of 152.

OUT! Bowled 'em! No doubt about this wicket. Mustafizur Rahman delivers his trademark slower delivery, on a length and around leg, Blessing Muzarabani once again opens his stance to go big over the leg side but is early into the swing of his bat. The ball arrives late and pegs the leg stump back. ZIMBABWE ARE ALL OUT FOR 152!

18.54

FOUR! 150 comes up! A length ball around off, Blessing Muzarabani clears his front leg and hammers his heave to the deep mid-wicket fence.

18.44

FOUR! Too full in length and wide outside off, Blessing squeezes it out past short third man for a boundary.

18.30

Great sportsman spirit shown by Nurul Hasan! A very full ball outside off, angling away, Blessing tries to dig it out but misses and it goes behind off the outside edge. Nurul Hassan dives across to his right to catch the ball but as his hands hit the ground, the ball comes out of his gloves. The finger has gone up but Nurul is quick to tell that he has not taken it cleanly.

Blessing Muzarabani is the last man in for Zimbabwe.

18.2W

OUT! Sound of timber! You will not see a better yorker than this! An inswinging one, right at the base of the middle stump, not much that Richard Ngarava can do. He still tries his best to get his bat down but it's all too late. The stumps are rattled and Zimbabwe's innings continue to slip.

Fuller in length and on off, pushed back to the bowler. Two wickets and 7 runs from the over, top stuff!

Who will come in next? It's going to be Richard Ngarava.

17.5W

OUT! A running stunner by the substitute fielder, Shamim Hossain. This one is a magnificent take, a ripper! Back of a length ball on middle, Burl decides that it's time to flex his muscles and powers it over wide mid on. Shamim Hossain reacts quickly from long on, runs across to his left and catches the ball safely. That's not all though. Not only he judged the catch to perfection but after falling and sliding near the fence, he does a commendable job to keep himself away from touching the fence. Shamim stays in that position and lifts his finger to show that it's a clean catch. The umpires though still take it upstairs and the soft signal is out. It stays out after the replays. Exceptional stuff!

17.41

On middle, a length ball, Wellington nudges it to mid-wicket for a single.

17.32

Slower delivery, on middle, eased down towards long on for a couple.

Who will come in next? It's going to be Wellington Masakadza in at number 9!

17.2W

OUT! Drags it on! Luke Jongwe tries to be too cheeky and pays a big price for it. Mohammad Saifuddin comes up with a sharp yorker-length ball wide outside off, Luke walks across the stumps for the paddle scoop but it takes the inner half of his blade and goes on to disturb the stumps. Had it missed the stumps, it would have been a boundary. Idea was good from Jongwe but not the execution.

17.14

FOUR! Poor delivery to start the over and it gets the deserved treatment. Short in length and wide outside off, Jongwe reaches out for it with an open-faced bat and slaps it past backward point for a boundary.

Angling away from the batsman, outside off, Jongwe places it to the right of short third man and collects a single. Good over, only 6 from it.

16.51lb

Smart bowling by the Fizz. He follows the batsman down the leg side by dartings a length ball, Burl fails to work it around and is hit on the body. They steal a leg bye.

16.41

Another slower delivery from Mustafizur Rahman. It's around off and Luke taps it down in front of backward point. They cross for a quick run as the fielder scores a direct hit at the striker's end. Burl is safe though. The ball deflects off the stumps to square leg but no extra run taken.

16.30

Short in length and wide outside off, slower in pace, Jongwe reaches out but steers it straight to short third man.

RUN OUT appeal! The square leg umpire sends this one upstairs as it looks close.

16.22

SAFE! The keeper never collected the ball. A near yorker around leg, Jongwe digs it out towards square leg and scampers back for the second run. The throw comes to the keeper who fails to gather it and breaks the stumps with his gloves as Jongwe dives back in. A direct hit would have got Luke!

16.11

Slower length ball on off, a cutter, Burl quietly works it through mid-wicket and wants two. Only one run is possible though.

Bowling change. Mustafizur Rahman comes back in. So far he has figures of, 2-0-17-1!

15.54

FOUR! Well placed! Short in length and wide outside off, the bowler has run his fingers on the seam and hence it's a slower one. But Luke Jongwe waits for it on the back foot and cuts it through the gap between backward point and short third man for a boundary.

He rushes back for the second run and the fielder fires a flat throw wide of the stumps at the striker's end. Chakabva runs across to his right, doesn't collect the ball and instead flicks it onto the stumps without looking behind. The appeal is made and it's referred upstairs.

17.5W

16.11

FOUR! Well placed! Short in length and wide outside off, the bowler has run his fingers on the seam and hence it's a slower one. But Luke Jongwe waits for it on the back foot and cuts it through the gap between backward point and short third man for a boundary.

15.42

Full again and this time the line is straight, Luke flicks it in the gap at mid-wicket and takes a couple.

15.31

Fuller in length and on middle, Ryan works it to mid-wicket and Mohammad Saifuddin runs after it. Good work to restrict them to a single.

15.21

Dropped? Seems like it didn't carry to the keeper. On a good length and outside off, Jongwe pushes tamely inside the line and gets a soft edge behind. It's dying down on Nurul Hasan who reacts well but fails to gather it cleanly. The replays have now confirmed that it did carry and it was a dropped catch. The batsmen crossed.

The ball was angling across and Dion Myers looked to heave it over mid-wicket by clearing his front leg, chose a difficult shot to play and paid the price. The off stump is uprooted. Bangladesh and Shoriful Islam are ecstatic as the dangerous Dion Myers is sent back to the pavilion.

The umpire has signalled for FOUR overthrows as well. Not too sure what transpired as no replays have been shown yet but as per the on-air commentators, it was some sloppy work by Bangladesh to not back the throw.

The keeper rushes forward, removes his gloves, picks up the ball and has a shy at the bowler's end. Shoriful there tried to stop the ball by raising his left hand up but luckily for Bangladesh, he fails to do that. It's a direct hit at the bowler's end, they appeal, it's referred upstairs and the replays find Regis Chakabva short. That's a hammer blow to Zimbabwe!

We're done and dusted with everything related to the build-up. It's time to get the ball rolling. Sikandar Raza has a word with the two openers, Tadiwanashe Marumani and Wesley Madhevere before they go out to the middle. Bangladesh are taking the field as well. Mohammad Saifuddin to begin proceedings. One slip in place. All in readiness. Here we go...

Time for the national anthems! The players have lined up in the middle. We are moments away from the first ball.

Mahmudullah, the captain of Bangladesh, says that they would have bowled first anyway as the pitch won't change much and they have a good batting depth. Adds that they have played some great cricket and they want to follow that in this series as well. Shares that they have a good bowling set-up and he is happy with the balance as there are a few all-rounders.

Sikandar Raza, the skipper of Zimbabwe, says that they are batting first as the surface looks good and once they have the runs on the board, it's not easy to chase. Feels that they have a young squad and they want to give them no scoreboard pressure. Adds that this is the format the youngsters enjoy the most and he is looking forward to a good game.

Pitch report - Big boundaries on one side and something for the captains to consider. The pitch looks like an absolute belter. There is a tinge of green on the surface but the sun is out, baking the surface and it will be great for batting. 156 is the average score here in the first innings but if you bat well, 180-190 is on.

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Mohammad Naim, Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Mahmudullah (C), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (WK), Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam.

Zimbabwe (Playing XI) - Regis Chakabva (WK), Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wesley Madhevere, Tarisai Musakanda, Sikandar Raza (C), Ryan Burl, Dion Myers (On debut), Luke Jongwe, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava.

Toss - The conditions here in Harare are bright and sunny as the two captains walk out to the centre. It's time to flick the coin. Mahmudullah calls it incorrectly and Sikandar Raza says that ZIMBABWE WILL BAT FIRST!

Key information! Sikandar Raza will be leading Zimbabwe as Brendan Taylor is rested. The hosts are already without Sean Williams and Craig Ervine, so their squad has been depleted further. For Bangladesh, Mushfiqur Rahim had pulled out of the white-ball tour earlier and now Tamim Iqbal is out with a knee injury. Bangladesh would be without two key members of their batting unit but still hold the upper hand due to the quality they possess in their squad.

Get ready, folks! It's time for the most exciting format of the game in Zimbabwe. The Harare Sports Club is ready to host yet another 3-match series and this time the home team would be hoping to start on a brighter note. Zimbabwe have so far lost everything from the time Bangladesh have stepped on their soil and would be trying to make use of the shortest format to bounce back. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have flexed their muscles on this tour and would be eyeing to extend their dominance with yet another clean sweep. More information regarding the first T20I coming your way shortly. Stay tuned.
