Hailing from Dunedin, Otago, Nathan Smith is a New Zealand all-rounder. A right-handed batter and right-arm medium-fast bowler, Smith has been a vital part of New Zealand's domestic cricket. He made his first-class debut for Otago in March 2016, a significant milestone that followed his selection for New Zealand's squad in the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Shortly after, Smith made his T20 debut in December 2016 and his List A debut in January 2017, marking a swift rise through New Zealand’s cricket ranks.

Smith's performances consistently earned him contracts, first with Otago in the 2018–19 season, and later, after a remarkable five-wicket haul of 5 for 14 against Northern Districts in December 2019, he secured another contract with Otago for the 2020–21 season. This period also saw him earn a spot in the New Zealand A squad for practice matches against the touring West Indies side, reflecting his growing stature in the national cricketing setup.

In February 2021, Smith took six wickets, helping North Otago secure a title-clinching win against Nelson in the Hawke Cup. In 2024, Smith signed with Worcestershire, where he showcased his all-round abilities in the Vitality Blast, scoring 144 runs across nine matches and taking eight wickets at an average of 30.25. His stint, however, was cut short by a hamstring injury, yet his impact left a lasting impression.

2024 proved to be a breakthrough year for the all-rounder, as years of perseverance in the domestic circuit finally bore fruit. He earned his maiden ODI cap against Sri Lanka in the subcontinent, marking the beginning of his international career. Later that same month, in November, his journey reached new heights when he made his Test debut at home against England.
