Tharindu Ratnayake

Cricket has seen plenty of spinners, but very few quite like Tharindu Ratnayake. He operates with equal comfort as a right-arm off-break bowler and a slow left-arm orthodox spinner, holding the extraordinary ability to switch arms between deliveries, even mid-over, depending on who is facing him. It is a craft honed over years on the domestic circuit, turning him into one of the most unconventional spin weapons modern cricket has produced.

That decade of graft finally paid off with a Test call-up, and Ratnayake made an immediate impression. He made his Test debut against Bangladesh on June 17, 2025, at the Galle International Stadium, where he picked up six wickets in his first appearance. He followed it up with three more dismissals at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo during the second Test, wrapping up his maiden two-Test series with nine wickets. What made him so difficult to counter was not just the raw numbers, but the tactical puzzle he posed. His ambidextrous switch-bowling allowed Sri Lanka to exploit rough patches on both sides of the pitch without altering their bowling rotation, leaving batters constantly second-guessing which arm was coming next.

His international breakthrough was built on a long and prolific domestic career. Ratnayake made his first-class debut for Sinhalese Sports Club back in the 2015-16 season. Across stints with SSC, Moors Sports Club, Sebastianites, and Tamil Union, he has racked up more than 360 first-class wickets and over 130 in List A cricket. His first-class career is headlined by a career-best single-innings haul of 9 for 65 against Burgher Recreation Club. He was also SSC's leading wicket-taker in the 2018-19 Premier League Tournament, claiming 53 dismissals in just ten matches.

That high-volume threat has translated well into shorter formats and franchise cricket. Ratnayake has turned out for a couple of franchises in the Lanka Premier League. Overseas, his rare versatility earned him deals with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa's SA20 league as well.
