Commentary

Right then, one final chapter of this white-ball series between these two Asian sides remains, which is the third and final ODI of the series on Tuesday, 14th October. Having suffered a whitewash in the T20Is, the Afghans will be pleased with how they turned things around and will be eager to inflict a whitewash of their own. The Tigers, on the other hand, will want to end the series on a high and carry confidence into their home series against the West Indies, starting next week. The first ball will be bowled at 12 pm GMT, but join us early for the pre-match build-up. See you then. Cheers!

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the skipper of Afghanistan, says that he is happy to win the series and congratulates Ibrahim Zadran for his knock, as it was not an easy pitch to bat on. Mentions that when he was at the crease, he felt that 220 would be enough. He also praises Azmatullah Omarzai for picking early wickets and adds that even after the completion of the sixth over he was confident enough to continue his spell. Ends up saying that Rashid Khan is a world class bowler and he congratulates him as well for bagging the five-fer.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the Bangladesh captain, says it's definitely a tough loss. Miraz reckons that they bowled really well but their batting was terrible today. Mentions that they needed to build partnerships which they failed to do today. Adds that the top order let them down, if they'd scored, things would've been different and the batters failed as a team tonight. Closes by saying they have to work on that aspect as they've still got one more game in this series and more cricket ahead, they need to bounce back strong and the batters need to step up and take responsibility.

Ibrahim Zadran is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fighting 95-run knock. He says that he was trying to stay positive in the first inning and was focusing on rotating the strike to put up a competitive total. Shares that he is not unhappy with the intent of the shot, where he was dismissed, but he felt that he needed to score quick runs as they were moving towards the death overs. Ends up saying that after the first inning, he told the team that if they bowl well, they will be able to win the match.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, after opting to bat first, Afghanistan endured a stop-start innings, with Bangladesh striking back each time the batting side seemed to be gaining momentum. Ibrahim Zadran held things together amid a trial by spin from Bangladesh. A calf strain to Rahmat Shah forced him to retire hurt, further adding to Afghanistan’s troubles. There were brief phases of stability through Zadran’s partnerships with Mohammad Nabi and Nangeyalia Kharote, but none lasted long enough to build real momentum, and as a result, they could only post 190 on the board. Mehidy Hasan Miraz stood out with the ball for Bangladesh with figures of 3 for 42 from his 10 overs, including a maiden.

Afghanistan were in search of early wickets with the new ball, and Azmatullah Omarzai delivered spectacularly. Omarzai set the tone upfront, taking three wickets in a seven-over spell inside the first 11 overs, with the team also benefiting from a run out of Najmul Hossain Shanto. Jaker Ali and Tawhid Hridoy tried to steady the innings after the chaotic start, and it seemed the chase was getting on track. However, a rush of blood from Hridoy opened the floodgates. Rashid Khan needed no second invitation, and from there it became a procession. It was a meek surrender from the Bangla Tigers, who simply refused to rein in their attacking instincts on a track that still offered considerable turn under the lights. Rashid finished with a five-wicket haul as Afghanistan achieved the lowest ODI total successfully defended at Abu Dhabi.

A memorable win for Afghanistan, and with this victory, Hashmatullah Shahidi and his men have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead. It also marks their third consecutive ODI series win over Bangladesh. Not long ago, during the Asia Cup, Bangladesh faltered while chasing 136 against Pakistan, and once again they have come undone in a situation that demanded sensible batting and low-risk cricket. This is now their fourth consecutive ODI series defeat, leaving the Bangla Tigers with plenty to reflect on as they look ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Commentary

We are back for the second chapter to unfold! The two umpires are out there in the middle. Afghanistan players have scattered to take their respective fielding positions. Azmatullah Omarzai will get the job to start with the new ball with a slip in position. Tanzid Hasan and Saif Hassan will be opening for Bangladesh. Away we go...

... The Run Chase ...

190 is the lowest first innings total in ODIs at Abu Dhabi and Afghanistan will be on the hunt for early wickets. The surface has been tricky to bat on, with its slower nature making it difficult for batters to find timing and clear the ropes. There has been noticeable turn and bounce on offer for the spinners, but under lights, will it get any easier to bat? We shall find out. The chase is coming up shortly!

Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah got together with the intent to stabilise, but misfortune struck when Rahmat went off the field with a calf injury and had to be replaced. Post the first Powerplay, the Bangladesh spinners took over and tightened the screws. Ibrahim held firm in the face of wickets falling around him as his stands, first with Mohammad Nabi and then with Nangeyalia Kharote, provided some stability. Zadran eventually fell for 95 and although Rahmat returned, he faced just one ball before he retired out.

An innings that never really took off for Afghanistan! Every time they got momentum in their innings, Bangladesh hit back. From Afghanistan's viewpoint, Ibrahim Zadran was the sole warrior who stood tall but he lacked the support at the other end. After opting to bat first, the Afghan openers adopted a cautious approach, determined not to hand over early wickets to their opponents. The Bangla Tigers excelled with the ball and in the field, maintaining a tight grip on the game and preventing runs from flowing easily in the first Powerplay. This relentless pressure became a pivotal factor as Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sediqullah Atal perished inside the first ten overs.

Oh, dear! Rahmat Shah is down on the ground. He is being helped back on his feet by the physio and a couple of Afghan substitutes. Shah will not be able to continue, and that will be the end of the Afghan innings. Nirmalan Thanabalasingam, the physio of the Afghanistan cricket team, provides an update on Rahmat. He informs that Shah suffered a calf injury while batting and they will get a clear idea about the extent of his injury once they get the scans done. Reckons that Rahmat will be out for a long time.

Rahmat Shah has not recovered from the injury suffered and won't be able to participate any more with the bat. As it stands, Rahmat Shah is retired out.

44.50

Sliding on with the arm, on a nagging length. Rahmat gets his bat out in front to block while being rooted to the crease. Gets beaten on the inside edge and gets hit on the back pad.

Rahmat Shah walks out. A great sign of character from Shah as he is still limping.

44.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Another one bites the dust! Rishad Hossain gets his second wicket! He bowls it short and outside off. AM Ghazanfar rocks back to swat it across the line, but fails to find the middle of his bat. The ball loops flat, toward the left of the long on fielder and Saif Hassan does well to judge the catch and takes it safely around his chest.

44.30

Much fuller, outside off. AM Ghazanfar tries to sweep it away but gets beaten on the inner edge.

44.22

PUT DOWN! Rishad bowls it fuller and wider on off, AM Ghazanfar backs away to swing through the line but the turn takes the ball further away from him. It gets skied towards cover, where Mehidy Hasan Miraz moves to his right and tries to settle under it. Reaches out with his hands to take the catch but fails to hold on. The ball rolls away in front of long off and the batters complete a couple of runs.

44.10

Short and around off, AM Ghazanfar flat bats it down to long on and refuses the single.

Fails to get the desired elevation and the ball goes flat towards deep mid-wicket, where Rishad Hossain leaps to his left and takes a reverse cup catch over his head. The brilliant knock of Ibrahim Zadran comes to an end.

Sliding on with the arm, on a nagging length. Rahmat gets his bat out in front to block while being rooted to the crease. Gets beaten on the inside edge and gets hit on the back pad.

Looks to force it through the off side and the ball gets spooned towards cover, where Tanvir Islam takes a simple catch. Bangladesh start celebrating and the third umpire is called into action. The replays show that the ball lobbed off the toe end towards cover. Not a bump ball and Rashid is given the marching orders.

Fires in a throw on the bounce towards the bowling end and Mehidy is standing beside the stumps. PITCH REPORT - Athar Ali Khan is near the deck. Informs that this game will be played on pitch number 9, while the first game was played on pitch number 4. Adds that the wicket looks pretty similar to the track of the first ODI, with it being dry in nature, but it has been rolled nicely. Observes a few bare patches which the spinners will be keen to exploit and expects the spinners to have a major say. Believes that batters will need to give themselves time at the crease, and runs are to be had if they apply themselves.

The skipper of Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz says that this looks like a good wicket and he would have batted first as well. Mentions that the bowling unit did their job in the last game, but he is disappointed with the way they batted. Informs that they have two changes with Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain coming into the side.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the skipper of Afghanistan, says that they will bat first and he expects the ball to turn in the second innings. Feels that it is easier to bat during the day than at night. Adds that their goal is to post a strong total and put pressure on the opposition. Informs that they are unchanged for this game.

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Saif Hassan, Nurul Hasan, Jaker Ali, Tawhid Hridoy, Mustafizur Rahman (In for Taskin Ahmed), Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Rishad Hossain (In for Hasan Mahmud), Tanvir Islam.

Afghanistan (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Nangeyalia Kharote, AM Ghazanfar, Bashir Ahmad.

TOSS - Afghanistan have won the toss and they will BAT first.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back strongly. In the first ODI, Tawhid Hridoy and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz gave Bangladesh hope with half-centuries, scoring 56 and 60 respectively, though they couldn't post a bigger total. Tanzim Hasan Sakib stood out with three wickets for Bangladesh but they lacked the bite in the spin department and could consider bringing in leg-spinner Rishad Hossain for today's game. Can Bangladesh pull off a spirited comeback against a confident Afghanistan? We shall find out. Stay tuned for toss and team updates.

Afghanistan had a fantastic first ODI, showcasing brilliant all-round performances. Azmatullah Omarzai was outstanding, taking three wickets and scoring crucial 40 runs down the order, helping Afghanistan chase down Bangladesh's total of 221 with ease. Rashid Khan also shone with three wickets, crossing a major milestone of 200 wickets in ODIs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah gave Afghanistan a solid base with half-centuries in the chase. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi also played a vital, unbeaten knock.

Welcome to the 2nd ODI between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, being played at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The series is currently 1-0 in favour of Afghanistan, who won the first ODI by five wickets. Now, Afghanistan will look to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, while Bangladesh will be desperate to level things up and stay alive.

... MATCH DAY ...

Afghanistan, having drawn first blood in the ODI series after a rough T20I outing, now stand on the brink of an unassailable 2-0 lead, while Bangladesh are desperate to level the score. The first match underscored the importance of spin on this surface, a factor that will again be key to success. Afghanistan's quartet of spinners, led by the talismanic Rashid Khan and the impressive young AM Ghazanfar, hold a distinct edge, which their experienced pace all-rounder, Azmatullah Omarzai, will look to complement with the new ball. For Bangladesh, the spin duo of skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam will need to deliver economical spells and breakthroughs to contain the strong Afghan batting unit. The primary focus for Afghanistan's batting will be on their top order converting starts into big scores. The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran put on a solid 52-run stand in the last match, while the middle order, anchored by Rahmat Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, is packed with experience. And the lower-middle order, featuring hard-hitting all-rounders like Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, and Rashid Khan, provides significant depth. This deep and powerful batting line-up gives them the confidence to post a competitive total, even if put in to bat first, and their ability to adapt to the conditions will be paramount for securing the series. Bangladesh, having swept the preceding T20I series, are under pressure to reverse their fortunes in the 50-over format. Their batting suffered a major collapse in the first ODI, losing the last six wickets for just 67 runs after a resilient 101-run partnership between Towhid Hridoy and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The team needs their top three, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and the consistent Hridoy to fire, offering more support to Miraz and the lower-middle order punch provided by Jaker Ali and Nurul Hasan. Taskin Ahmed and Tanzim Hasan Shakib will be pivotal in leading the pace attack, which, along with their spinners, must be brilliant to restrict a deep Afghanistan line-up to a manageable score. This match shapes up as a critical contest, with Afghanistan aiming for a swift series closure and Bangladesh fighting for survival. The outcome will likely hinge on which team’s batting unit can better navigate the spin challenge and convert partnerships. If Afghanistan's powerful five, especially Gurbaz, can live up to their reputation and convert their good starts, they will be extremely difficult to beat. Conversely, if Mehidy Hasan Miraz can inspire a more consistent batting performance and a clinical bowling display from his side, Bangladesh have the resources to force a decider, making this a high-stakes, must-win encounter for the Tigers.
