Commentary

Right then, it was a run fest in Ranchi with a match aggregate of 681 runs. If this opening game is anything to go by, we are in for a cracker of a series. The two teams will now meet in Raipur on Wednesday, 3rd December, for the second ODI of this three-match series. Rested for this game, Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj will most likely be back for the next one, and their return will be a boost as the Proteas look to draw level. As for India, they will be pleased with the all-round effort, especially the way their senior players led the way and how the pace attack bowled. They will now look to carry this momentum into the second game and try to seal the series. The first ball in Raipur will be bowled at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT). As always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until next time, take care and goodbye!

Virat Kohli is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his superb ton. Kohli says it was nice to get into the game the way he did today. Adds that he felt the pitch played quite well for the first 20 to 25 overs before it slowed down, and his focus was on enjoying himself out there. Mentions that once he got a start, it became about building an innings. Shares that he has never been a big believer in doing a lot of preparation. For him, the game has always been more mental than anything else. Further says that he works physically hard because that is the way he lives, not something he does specifically for cricket, and being mentally sharp is what matters most to him. Kohli states that whenever he arrives somewhere, he makes sure he arrives at a hundred per cent. Tells that he wanted to get a proper feel of the conditions, so he batted both in the day and under lights after reaching Ranchi early. With more than 300 ODI games behind him, he believes that if you stay in touch with the game and understand when you are hitting the ball well, the rhythm naturally comes back. When asked by Harsha Bhogle, he quashes the rumours and makes it clear that he is continuing to play this one format.

KL Rahul, the Indian captain, says he felt a bit nervous leading the ODI side again after a while, but is really pleased with how the bowlers stuck to their plans and kept taking wickets. He mentions that he is enjoying batting at No. 6, a role he has been given in the last few series, and feels it is helping him grow as a player. He praises Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for their exceptional performances, saying it is always fun to watch them bat and that their presence in the dressing room is invaluable to the group. Rahul also speaks highly of Harshit Rana’s progress, noting that he has the potential to become a very good fast bowler. He ends by acknowledging Kuldeep Yadav’s importance, calling him someone who consistently steps up and takes crucial wickets for the team.

The skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram says he is really proud of the effort from the team. Adds that it was great to watch the guys step up and do their thing. Mentions that they never lost belief, and there was genuine hope in the dressing room throughout. Shares that they knew the ball would swing under the lights, and felt that chasing was the best way to win the game. Admits it is up to the top three, including himself, to give the side a solid start, and we all saw what the middle order is capable of. Shares that he is very proud of the group for showing plenty of character. Further says that any team would love to bat as deep as possible, and both Jansen and Bosch contribute brilliantly in that regard.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

India's Kuldeep Yadav is in for a chat. Kuldeep says he and KL Rahul had strategised to stay attacking and look for wickets, mixing up his deliveries with scrambled seam and seam-up variations while targeting a back-of-a-length area. He explains that bowling in wet conditions is always a challenge and praises the way Matthew Breetzke and Marco Jansen batted against spin. Kuldeep adds that the plan to slow the ball up and vary his pace brought him Jansen’s crucial wicket, a moment he feels turned the game in India’s favour.

Earlier, India were asked to bat first on a surface that allowed batters to hit through the line. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma capitalised with a 136-run stand, with Rohit being dropped on 1 by Tony de Zorzi. After Rohit fell, the Proteas pulled things back as the ball got older and their variations kicked in. The incoming batters struggled for fluency, and Kohli was starved of strike. He brought up his 52nd ODI ton before his surge was cut short. Late contributions from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja pushed India towards 350 before excellent death bowling from Corbin Bosch held them to 349.

Jansen’s innings really made India sweat and closed the gap between the two sides. Through the Jansen-Breetzke stand, the tourists had the momentum with them, but the game turned on its head when both set batters fell within three balls. Corbin Bosch kept the flame of the chase alive, with support coming from Prenelan Subrayen and Nandre Burger. The task eventually proved too steep for Bosch, as in dewy conditions India’s pace trio held their nerve at the death to close out the contest.

It was the worst possible start for the Proteas in pursuit of 350, as they were reduced to 11/3 inside five overs. After making early inroads, Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh lost a bit of discipline, and Matthew Breetzke cashed in to get going. Breetzke led the recovery with Tony de Zorzi offering a steady hand, but the southpaw did not last long. First Dewald Brevis and then Marco Jansen counter-attacked, with Breetzke shifting into a supporting role.

A really good game of cricket. An ODI classic that ebbed and flowed with plenty of momentum shifts, but in the end, India emerged as the winners to go 1-0 up in the series. Given the start they had, finishing on 349 felt like they left a few runs out there, but their bowlers ensured it was enough on the day. It was a spirited chase from South Africa after being 11/3, and the true Proteas fight was on display as they kept landing punches. Reflecting on the game, they will look back at some of the loose shots in the first Powerplay that put them on the back foot, and will feel that if any of their top three had played a long innings, the chase could have unfolded very differently.

OUT! CAUGHT! India win the 1st ODI by 17 runs. PHEW! What a game we have had in Ranchi. On a length around off, Corbin Bosch looks to smash this up and over the fielder at long off but the bat tilts in his hands at the time of contact with the ball and the white leather spoons over Rohit Sharma at extra cover. Rohit makes no mistake and holds onto it.

On a length around middle and leg, Corbin Bosch smashes this to long on for no run.

South Africa need 18 off the last over. It will be Prasidh Krishna to bowl. More drama as India have been penalised for not completing their overs on time. They can have only 4 fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

Commentary

Welcome back for the Proteas' batting effort. KL Rahul leads his men out on the park. It will be the left-hand, right-hand combination of Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram to open the innings for South Africa. Arshdeep Singh will kickstart proceedings with the ball for India. Arshdeep to Markram. A slip and a catching mid on in place. Here we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

The target is daunting, but the ground's history of evening dew could turn the game on its head. If the dew factor comes into play, the Proteas' batting lineup, packed with power hitters, could chase this down. It promises to be an electrifying second half of the contest. We will be back with the chase in a while.

South Africa's bowling was a mixed bag, starting slowly and getting hammered for a good 20 overs or so, but they bounced back strongly in the middle overs, restricting India's scoring. However, they again lost control towards the end, allowing India to score freely. Nandre Burger, Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, and Marco Jansen each took 2 wickets.

India's innings got off to a blazing start with Yashasvi Jaiswal's boundary, setting the tone for an aggressive approach. However, Jaiswal's vulnerability against left-arm seamers was exposed once again as he fell prey to Nandre Burger. The real magic happened when Virat Kohli joined Rohit Sharma in the middle, and the duo unleashed a scoring frenzy, adding 136 runs off 109 balls for the second wicket. Although Ruturaj Gaikwad and Washington Sundar struggled, Kohli and KL Rahul steadied the ship before exploding in the later overs. A crucial partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Rahul towards the end propelled India to a massive total.

India's batting has been an absolute rollercoaster. They started strong, faced a middle-overs slump, but ultimately surged to a massive total thanks to Virat Kohli's 52nd ODI century. Kohli's incredible knock, combined with Rohit Sharma's explosive partnership, KL Rahul's steadying influence, and Ravindra Jadeja's crucial runs, propelled India to a whopping total of 349.

A couple of leg byes to finish the innings! Bosch keeps it full, pitching outside leg, Kuldeep tries the scoop but fails to lay any bat on it and the ball clips the back leg before dribbling behind towards deep fine leg. Yadav hustles back for the second run and puts in a dive. Quinton de Kock breaks the stumps and it is referred upstairs. Kuldeep's bat bounced off the shoulder but when it went past the crease initially, it was grounded. Quinton wanted to take a chance with LBW with Bosch on a hat-trick. Aiden Markram went for the review but the Ball Tracking showed that the ball had pitched well outside leg. India finish with 349 on the board!

Has the second run been completed? It was a desperate dive from Kuldeep Yadav. Well, there is a review too from South Africa for LBW. This has pitched well outside the line but the third umpire, Rod Tucker says that we will have to go through the protocol. The Ball Tracking is taking too long to load and therefore, the third umpire suggests that let's check the run out first. Kuldeep has just made about made his ground with the dive. Over to Ball Tracking now. It has pitched well outside leg.

49.5W

OUT! TIMBER! Absolute perfection from Corbin Bosch! Bosch steams in from over the wicket and nails the yorker with pinpoint accuracy, right at the base of the off stump. Arshdeep stays leg side of the ball and tries to get his bat down quickly but the ball sneaks past the blade and uproots the off pole. Bosch is on a hat-trick. Kuldeep Yadav walks out to bat.

Arshdeep Singh comes out to bat.

49.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Couldn't get enough power behind it, could Ravindra Jadeja. Corbin Bosch looks for another yorker around off but ends up serving a high full toss. Jadeja hangs deep in the crease but the ball comes at an awkward height and he ends up lofting it down to long on. Aiden Markam comes in from the deep and takes a safe catch.

49.31

Full and straight, nails the yorker, Rana gets a bit of bat on it but has no idea where the ball went. Rana starts running and turns the strike over.

49.21

Goes full and straight, landing it on leg stump, Jadeja takes the front leg out and heaves it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

49.12

Follows the batter past the leg stump with a full ball, and Jadeja flicks it away well to the right of long leg for a couple of runs.

Corbin Bosch will bowl the final over. South Africa have been penalised for slow over rate. They will be allowed only 4 fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the last over.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Doesn't come off for KL Rahul this time around and he has to walk back. Marco Jansen bangs the ball in on a hard length and bowls it right over middle stump. Back of a length and around leg, tucked away wide of square leg for a single.

48.24

FOUR! Lovely timing and it will go for a boundary. Slower one, into the pitch and outside off, Ravindra Jadeja waits well and just pats it away square through covers. The fielder from deep point hares to his left and puts in the dive but ends up fumbling the ball over the ropes.

DRINKS BREAK! With the fall of the 4th wicket, the umpires have called for a hydration break. It was turning out to be a good recovery for South Africa after being rocked early. If they were to get anywhere close to the target, the partnership held the key but with Tony de Zorzi gone, Matthew Breetzke has a lot resting on his shoulders. Dewald Brevis is expected to come in next, and then it is the all-rounders. India will be relieved to have broken the flourishing stand and will look to build the pressure in the middle phase. OUT! LBW! Kuldeep Yadav breaks the partnership and what an excellent review it turned out to be. Scrambled seam from Kuldeep Yadav, pitching on middle and straightening after landing in the line of the stumps. Tony de Zorzi plays for the ball sliding in with the angle and looks to work this away on the leg side but gets beaten on the outside edge. Quinton de Kock goes after it as he reaches out with his hands. The ball moves away enough to catch the outside edge and the keeper, KL Rahul takes the simplest of catches. Quinton falls for a two-ball duck.

Drinks Break! Just as India lose their 4th wicket, the Umpires call for drinks. When the last hydration break was taken, India were in a very strong position and even though the scoring rate is more than decent right now, they are in a bit of a slump. South Africa worked hard to get the wicket of Rohit Sharma and have done brilliantly since then to keep picking up wickets. The pacers are starting to use their change-ups effectively and a lot now rests on the shoulders of Virat Kohli if India are to get to a big total. With that said, skipper KL Rahul walks in at number 6.

The stage is set for the game to begin as Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India's new opening pair, take on Marco Jansen's left-arm seam. The crowd is buzzing with excitement, and the atmosphere is electric. The big question is how well they'll handle the left-arm threat. Yashasvi Jaiswal has struggled against left-arm pacers in the past, making this a crucial test for the young opener. Rohit Sharma's experience will be vital in guiding Jaiswal through this challenging phase. Let's see how they fare against Jansen's pace first up.

The pre-match formalities are underway, with the umpires leading the way as both teams stand at attention. The national anthems are about to be played, with South Africa's first, followed by India's.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Aiden Markram (C), Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock (WK), Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi, Dewald Brevis, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Prenelan Subrayen, Nandre Burger, and Ottneil Baartman.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Washington Sundar, KL Rahul (C/WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna.

KL Rahul, the Indian skipper, highlighted the team's strategy for the ODI series against South Africa, citing the dew factor in Ranchi as a factor in their bowling approach. He praised the team's preparation, citing the experience brought by new faces in the squad, and emphasized the focus on jelling well as a unit for the ODI World Cup. Rahul revealed India's lineup, featuring Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers, Washington Sundar in the middle order, and a balanced bowling attack with 3 seamers and 3 spinners.

The stand-in captain of South Africa, Aiden Markram, says they have chosen to bowl first. Having spent a couple of evenings here, he mentions that there has been noticeable dew, and the stats also suggest that batting becomes easier in the evening. He adds that while the personnel in the squad are slightly different from the Test series, the dressing room remains a great space to be in. Markram calls it an important series for them and hopes they can get off to a good start. Further says that there is still some time before the ODI World Cup, but he notes that it is always exciting to test themselves against a quality side like India, especially in Indian conditions. Informs that Keshav Maharaj and Temba Bavuma have been rested for this game. They are going in with four seamers, with Markram himself and Prenelan Subrayen taking up the spin responsibilities.

TOSS - Up goes the flip of the coin and Aiden Markram calls it correctly. South Africa will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta points out that this is a fairly biggish venue, with boundaries measuring around 67 metres and 65 metres square of the wicket, and about 75 metres down the ground. He also informs that the pitch is being used in international cricket for the first time since it was relaid in 2023. Shaun Pollock adds that the surface looks really good. He observes a few cracks, but feels there is enough grass cover to hold it together. He mentions that when you go down and knock on it, it feels really hard, which suggests it should play nicely. Whether it begins to crumble later remains to be seen. Deep further explains that this is a black-soil surface, which could offer more bounce than what we have seen here before. Believes that dew will be an important factor as well. Pollock agrees with Deep that chasing makes more sense on this ground.

With both sides eager to stamp their authority in the 50-over format and South Africa holding a slight historical edge in the head-to-head record, the opening encounter in Ranchi promises a tightly contested, high-stakes battle to set the tone for the three-match series. Stay tuned for the toss and team sheets.

South Africa, however, arrive with confidence sky-high, having dismantled India in the preceding Test series. Led by Temba Bavuma, the Proteas have a full-strength ODI squad featuring the explosive Quinton de Kock, who returns to the limited-overs setup. Their batting line-up, bolstered by the presence of Aiden Markram and rising stars like Dewald Brevis, poses a significant threat. Their pace attack, featuring Lungi Ngidi and the all-round threat of Marco Jansen, will look to exploit any lingering fragility in the Indian top-order.

The onus will be on stand-in skipper KL Rahul, taking the reins in the absence of the injured Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, to galvanize a side bruised from the longer format. The squad features a blend of established stars and young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma, with their performance in this series being a strong indicator of India's bench strength and preparation for future global events. The bowling attack, without Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, will rely on the young pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, supported by the control and wicket-taking ability of the spin twins, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Ranchi’s pitch, known for favoring a balanced contest but becoming slower as the game progresses, suggests the spin contingent will be vital.

Hello, and a warm welcome to one and all! The three-match ODI series between India and South Africa kicks off with the 1st ODI in Ranchi, marking a crucial format shift for the hosts following a humbling 2-0 Test series whitewash. For India, this series is all about a much-needed reset, bringing back the veteran white-ball core of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who last played an ODI on home soil during the 2023 World Cup. As for the Proteas, it is another great opportunity for them to challenge themselves against arguably the best white-ball outfit in the world.

... MATCH DAY ...

After what proved to be a historic Test series, the focus now shifts to the white ball leg of South Africa’s tour of India. First up are the three ODIs, followed by a five-match T20I series. The ODI leg will begin at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, before moving to Raipur and finally Vizag. India were thoroughly outplayed in the Test series, and they will look to move past that disappointment. Their last ODI assignment saw them lose in Australia, which was Shubman Gill's first since being appointed as the full-time skipper. The hosts, however, will be without Gill this time as he continues to recover from the neck sprain he suffered during the first Test in Kolkata. In his absence, KL Rahul will lead a side that features a blend of youth and experience. Along with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant return to the squad after missing the Australia series. Gill’s absence leaves one of the opening slots vacant, with Yashasvi Jaiswal the likely candidate to partner Rohit at the top. Ruturaj Gaikwad has also earned a recall after his strong performances for India A against South Africa A. While Gaikwad’s usual position is as an opener, nothing is set in stone with this Indian team, and a middle order role cannot be ruled out. Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a spleen laceration during the Australia series, remains unavailable. His absence has opened the door for Tilak Varma and Dhruv Jurel, although Pant and Rahul are expected to be the certainties in the middle order. Among the all rounders, Jadeja is joined by Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar, while Kuldeep Yadav is the lone specialist spinner in the squad. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj rested, the pace bowling duties will fall on the shoulders of Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. As far as South Africa are concerned, they come into this series riding high on confidence after winning their first Test series in India in 25 long years. Their last ODI assignment was in Pakistan, a series they lost with a second-string side. Before that, with a near full-strength unit, they won series in England and Australia, and they are close to full strength again for this tour of India. In the pace department, they will be without their premier fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, who missed both Tests due to a rib bone stress injury and has not recovered in time for the white ball matches. In his absence, the responsibility will fall on Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger to step up. Jansen had a memorable Test in Guwahati and will once again look to contribute with both bat and ball, while Corbin Bosch provides another pace bowling all round option. Keshav Maharaj will lead the spin attack with Prenelan Subrayen offering an additional spin option, along with useful contributions with the bat. Quinton de Kock returned to the ODI setup during the Pakistan series and marked his comeback with two fifties and a hundred. Who partners him at the top remains to be seen, with Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton completing the top order options. Tony de Zorzi, Matthew Breetzke, and Dewald Brevis make up the middle order, while debutant Rubin Hermann adds freshness to the unit. However, when looking at the composition of the squad, South Africa do appear to lack a specialist finisher, which could be an area of concern in tight contests. With both teams missing key players yet still boasting plenty of quality, this ODI series promises to be a fascinating contest. India will look to reset after a difficult Test campaign, while South Africa arrive with momentum and renewed belief after their historic triumph. Who are you backing to land the first punch?
