Commentary

KL Rahul now collects the trophy and walks to his teammates for the photographs. The trophy is handed to Jaiswal, who lofts it up in the air, as smiles spread all across the Indian camp behind the winner's board. That's a wrap on this three-match ODI series. India take it 2-1, stamping their authority on home soil once again and proving their white-ball dominance remains as strong as ever. Plenty of positives to take away for the hosts, from individual brilliance to collective resilience under pressure. South Africa, win or lose, showed glimpses of fight and will head back with a few things to smile about, but more importantly, plenty to dissect and refine as they regroup for future challenges. After that bruising 2-0 Test whitewash, India have bounced back in style in the ODIs. But there's no time to rest. Both sides now shift gears for the upcoming five-match T20I series, with the opening clash set for Cuttack on Tuesday, 9th December. The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). Until then, it's goodbye from us. Stay safe, and we will catch you on the other side. Cheers.

The Indian captain, KL Rahul, jokes that he doesn’t think the team has ever looked at him and smiled this much just for winning the toss. He points out that you can already see how the conditions are with the dew settling in. Believes it was a really good wicket to bat on. Rahul feels that taking wickets in bunches made a big difference. He explains that against teams who go hard, it’s either 400 on the board or you end up playing one shot too many and getting out, so the only real way to contain them is by picking wickets. KL adds that for a set batter like Quinton de Kock, the wicket played differently, and it wasn’t easy for new batters to start, which is why de Kock's wicket was crucial. Rahul says the most pleasing thing in the series has been the team’s ability to hold their nerve and stay calm under pressure. States that there was one result that didn’t go their way, but he is not upset about it and doesn’t want the team to dwell on it. Reckons that sticking to their processes and doing the same things consistently has paid off.

Virat Kohli is the PLAYER OF THE SERIES for his fine form with the bat. He scored a couple of centuries and an unbeaten half century, finishing with a tally of 302 runs in the series. He begins by saying that the way he has played in this series has been really satisfying for himself. Says that he is feeling really free and the whole game is coming together nicely. Admits that he hasn't played this fluently in the last 2-3 years. Mentions that he tried to maintain his own standards and make a strong impact. Reflects that you feel nervous, especially while batting, where one mistake can cost you big, and that he has been in different phases over his career. Says that knowing and working on the negative thinking patterns really helps to improve his temperament and the overall game. Feels glad to be able to contribute to the team's win. On his six-hitting ability, he says that when he is playing freely, he knows he can hit a few into the stands. On being asked about which inning of the series he would rate as the best, Kohli highlights the century in Ranchi as a special one, as he hadn't played since the Australia series. Says that inning opened him up in a way he hadn't felt in a while. Adds that the must-win situations bring the best out of him. Expresses his happiness to see Rohit and him able to help the team even now.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his unbeaten and match-winning 116 off 121 balls. He says he really enjoyed his innings today and feels grateful and blessed for the opportunity. Mentions that he and Rohit have been chatting a lot about the tempo at which they should bat. Adds that he had got starts in the last two games but couldn’t convert them, so he looked to pace the innings better. Tells that he needed to control his thoughts, stay calm, and look to bat long. He also talks about how Virat Kohli started playing a lot of shots at the other end, and that helped him as well. Shares that Virat gave him small targets to focus on, which made things clearer in the middle.

The captain of South Africa, Temba Bavuma, reflects on the series defeat. He says they wanted to make it a lot more exciting this evening, but admits that they didn't have enough runs on the board. Also accepts that they could've been smarter with the bat but they gifted their wickets away, especially with the shot selection. Adds that it tends to get easier to bat under the lights, but also says that they were better with the ball in the first ten overs, while also conceding to the point that India didn't have any scoreboard pressure. Highlights that the conditions were different from the first two matches. Says that they got a couple of starts with Quinton de Kock getting to his century, but admits that he himself lost his way in the middle. Accepts that he could have been smarter and will learn from the experience. Adds that they have got some young players and the talk is about the way they want to play. Ends by saying if there were ten boxes, they have ticked six or seven of those.

... THE PRESENTATION CEREMONY ...

India's Prasidh Krishna is in for a chat with the broadcasters. He says the first two overs were really hard for him, with a couple of really poor balls mixed in with a few good ones. He shares that he sat back and assessed what was going wrong. Tells that the good thing about cricket is that you always get another spell. Adds that his focus was on bringing the stumps into play and not giving the batters any width. Krishna gives credit to Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana for the way they started and mentions how Kuldeep came on and picked up wickets helped build pressure. Overall, he feels they have done well as a bowling unit across the three games. Prasidh admits he was under a bit of pressure after the previous match. Further says that they spoke about what went wrong, but he knows what he can do and what he is capable of and for him, it was just about executing the plans. On the batting front, he says the group has always been good, and it is pleasing to see the top three performing in the manner the team expects.

Earlier in the game, India opted to bowl first after finally winning the toss. Harshit and Arshdeep kept things nice and quiet in the first Powerplay and didn't let the Proteas run away. However, Quinton de Kock batted like a dream and formed important partnerships with skipper Bavuma and then with Breetzke to sail the ship steadily in the middle phase. Soon after notching up his 23rd ODI hundred, QDK perished. South Africa slipped from 168/2 to 199/5 with Kuldeep and Krishna denting the middle order. The real dent came when Kuldeep dismissed both Brevis and Jansen in the same over off some really ordinary shots. Keshav Maharaj did fight well for his unbeaten 20, but India wrapped the visitors to 270 with Kuldeep and Krishna both finishing with a 4-fer.

Also, the fact that the South African bowlers were a bit too short against Rohit, which fed into his strengths. He did cash in with some trademark biggies as well. Maharaj finally provided the breakthrough by dismissing Rohit, but by then the damage was done. India had already chewed through more than half the target, and the chase was well and truly in their control. To make matters worse for the Proteas, Kohli walked in looking settled from ball one, continuing his sublime form. He scored a free-flowing fifty, and just when South Africa thought it couldn't get any harder, Jaiswal brought up his maiden ODI century, twisting the knife deeper. It was then just a matter of time as Virat Kohli unleashed his batting brilliance, which helped India to win with 61 balls to spare.

Rohit was the aggressor of the two, playing with trademark fluency and racing to a smooth fifty that gave Jaiswal the perfect platform to find his rhythm. India cruised along at five an over without breaking a sweat, with the asking rate never really a threat. The game plan was simple and effective - pick the gaps, rotate strike, and cash in when the loose balls came. Both openers executed it to perfection. Jaiswal grew into the innings beautifully, notching up his maiden ODI fifty and watching South African heads drop.

The target wasn't massive, but India weren't taking any chances. Rohit and Jaiswal stepped out with a game plan that screamed patience over panic, reading the two-paced surface and constructing their innings nicely. Jansen and Ngidi came hard with bounce and swing, testing their techniques, but the openers stood their ground. However, Jaiswal was interrogated thoroughly by pace and bounce, but he stood tall. India were 48 at the end of the first Powerplay, but without any wicket loss.

If there's one word to describe this Indian win, it's commanding in every sense. After being put to the test in the first two matches, the hosts have completely bossed the series decider. If Ranchi was a run fest with India's win inked on it, Raipur saw South Africa deliver a hammer blow by chasing down a mammoth target, Vizag belonged to India in the most dominating fashion possible. A tough day at the office for the tourists, as apart from a few batting brilliances, nothing really went their way this evening.

39.54

FOUR! Virat Kohli polishes off the chase! Lungi Ngidi bends his back and goes into the surface, outside off. Kohli dances down the track again and gets his hands high. Slaps it up and over extra cover for a boundary. India romp home in a dominant fashion and win the series 2-1!

Commentary

Welcome back for the chase. Temba Bavuma leads his troops out on the park. It will be the left-hand, right-hand combination of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma to open the innings for India. Marco Jansen will kickstart proceedings. Jansen to Jaiswal. Two slips await. Here we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, India will back themselves to chase down this total, but they will need to be cautious early on with the ball expected to move around a bit under the lights. As for the dew, based on what KL Rahul mentioned during the toss, it is not expected to be as prominent as it was in Ranchi or Raipur. Kuldeep Yadav also shared that the old ball held in the surface, and if that continues into the second innings and the dew does not arrive, stroke-making may not be straightforward. All in all, an intriguing chase awaits. Back in a bit for India's reply.

Kuldeep Yadav is up for a quick chat. He starts by saying that the pacers Harshit and Arshdeep started off well for them as they bowled on tight lines and lengths in the Powerplay. Highlights that it was gripping when the spinners came in. Adds that he tried to mix up the pace. Details that bowling with a dry ball has been a luxury after the first two games. Says they lost 20 successive tosses, but they won this time and expresses his happiness about that. On the appeals and requests for reviews, he admits that he is someone who is not spot on with the reviews. Shares that Rohit keeps pulling his leg whenever he is bowling or appealing. Mentions that he tries to hit the pads and if he succeeds in doing so, he feels that every ball is a wicket. Says that you need seniors like the former captain Rohit Sharma to guide you, and also appreciates KL Rahul by saying that KL has been brilliant behind the stumps. On being asked about how the wicket is playing, Kuldeep mentions it is still a good surface to bat on. Also points out that because of the 34-over ball change rule, the ball was dry and was holding well onto the pitch. Also says that it wasn't that easy to score runs when the ball turned. Ends by saying he tried a lot of variations like the conventional leggie, the googly and the flipper to trap the batters.

KL Rahul dangled the carrot by introducing Kuldeep Yadav, and neither Dewald Brevis nor Marco Jansen could resist. Both departed in the same over to the left-arm wrist spinner that came as a bruising double blow for the tourists. From there, Kuldeep proved far too good for the rest of the lower order, and Prasidh Krishna stepped in to complete the cleanup job.

However, the momentum shifted quickly when Prasidh Krishna’s first two overs went for 27 runs, allowing de Kock to break free while Bavuma, though less fluent, kept ticking along. Krishna, though, redeemed himself on his return to the attack by striking twice in an over. That shifted the tide decisively, as South Africa had been progressing comfortably until that point. De Kock went on to bring up his 23rd ODI hundred but fell soon after. At 199/5 with about 17 overs remaining and not a lot of batting to come, Dewald Brevis and Marco Jansen needed to decide whether to go hard or lay a platform by keeping wickets in hand.

Earlier, India finally ended their streak of 20 consecutive toss losses in ODIs and opted to bowl first. South Africa made a tweak at the top, with Aiden Markram, fresh off a match-winning century in Raipur, moving down the order. Ryan Rickelton opened with Quinton de Kock, but his stay was short-lived as he fell for his second duck of the series in the very first over. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana made good use of the new ball on a surface that offered noticeable spongy bounce early on. There was just enough movement in the air and off the pitch to keep Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock uncertain, resulting in a cautious start.

A job well done by India. While 270 is a competitive total, the Proteas looked on course for much more at the halfway mark. After letting themselves down with both the ball and in the field in Raipur, the dry conditions here certainly helped the home side, and Kuldeep Yadav in particular made the most of what was on offer.

47.5W

OUT! BOWLED! Prasidh Krishna finishes with a four wicket-haul. A nicely executed yorker from 'Skiddy', lasered on the stumps and it tails in a bit as well. Ottneil Baartman tries to work it into the off side, but plays all over it as his feet go nowhere. The ball beats the inside edge and smashes into the stumps behind. SOUTH AFRICA ARE BOWLED OUT ON 270!

47.41

Spears in a full toss, on off. Keshav Maharaj slaps it to the left of extra cover for a quick single.

47.34

FOUR! Up and over! Slower one, full and on middle. Keshav Maharaj effortlessly lofts it over mid off for a boundary.

47.21

Hard length, on top of middle and leg, tucked away to deep square leg for a single.

46.21

DRINKS BREAK. The Indians are in complete control of the game as they have lost just one wicket of Rohit Sharma and need only 70 runs to win. Jaiswal looked a bit scratchy and was indeed tested by some quality bowling, but he held his ground nicely and is on course for his maiden ODI hundred, whereas Virat Kohli has got another start and is scoring with absolute fluency. The game has been stretched out of South Africa's reach, realistically. But can they bounce back with a couple of quick wickets and make this more interesting? Let's find out. DRINKS BREAK. A rather patient start from the Indian openers. Yes, they have been tested thoroughly by the two-paced wicket, especially Jaiswal, but both have stood firm against the challenge. The bounce looked a bit spongy when India had the ball, but it seems to have quickened up a bit now. Rohit has been fluent of the two batters and would want to maintain this tempo. The Proteas haven't quite managed to string together some quiet overs, and will aim to get a breakthrough as quickly as possible. Keshav Maharaj (4-0-21-0) to continue after the hydration break.

DRINKS BREAK! With the dismissal of Quinton de Kock, the umpires have called for the hydration break. This is a big breakthrough for India, arriving just as South Africa were beginning to regain momentum after Prasidh Krishna’s double strike. An intriguing phase awaits us now. The Indian quicks, who have been bowling with a wet ball at the death for the past two games, will welcome the chance to operate with a dry one, and remember, only one ball will be used for the remainder of the innings after the 34th over. South Africa, meanwhile, will need to be mindful of how they pace their innings. Going nice and smooth.

Here's Harshit Rana back into the attack. 5-2-22-0 are his bowling figures so far.

FOUR! First boundary of the game and it comes via a genuine outside edge. Full and outside off, swinging away, Quinton de Kock goes for the drive but gets a thick outside edge over the slip cordon and the two slip fielders - Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad, don't even make an effort.

3.31

A touch fuller and outside off, Bavuma looks to play on the up but gets it off the outer half of the blade through backward point for a single.

3.22

Length ball, angled down the pads, Bavuma clips it away well wide of long leg and picks up a couple of runs to get off the mark.

3.11

Finally, a run being scored after 17 deliveries! Hard length on middle and leg, QDK just nudges it past the deck on the leg side and after a bit of hesitation, the batters scamper through for the run.

Back-to-back maidens! Good length, pushed wide of the off stump line and Bavuma lets this one through to the keeper.

2.50

Good-length delivery, shaping back into the body, Bavuma nudges it away but can't beat the fielder at square leg. No run yet since the very first ball of the innings.

2.40

Play and a miss! Hard length again, darted well across off, Temba Bavuma attempts a loose cut shot as his feet go nowhere and the ball goes well past the outside edge.

2.30

Hard length on off, angling away, Bavuma stays back in the crease and defends it to short covers.

2.20

A bit fuller and at the stumps, Bavuma blocks it off.

2.10

Oh, that's nicely bowled! On a hard length and in the channel, looks to shape back in but it holds its line and Temba Bavuma is a bit taken aback by the extra bounce. It is quite spongey in nature, the bounce.

1.60

A maiden to start from Rana! Nagging length, attacking the off stump line, Quinton de Kock leans on and solidly blocks it off.

1.50

Make that five! Very full and angled just down leg, de Kock fails to flick it away and the ball goes on to hit the pads. That one should have been put away.

1.40

Full again, just a bit straighter, Quinton de Kock plays it back to the bowler. Four dots to begin with from Harshit Rana.

1.30

Full of a good length, swinging away from the off stump line, left alone by QDK.

1.20

Oh, that's a bit of a stinger! Banged in on a shortish length and around off, de Kock looks to block but the ball shoots up off the deck and squares up the batter. De Kock is hit on the left bicep.

1.10

Fuller in length and swinging away but a touch wide outside off, QDK leans on and just leaves it alone for the keeper. Good carry through to the keeper as well.

Harshit Rana will operate with the other new ball.

Lovely shape on the ball and a brilliant first over from Arshdeep. Nagging length, starts on off and swings back into middle, Temba Bavuma stays watchful in defence.

South Africa's skipper, Temba Bavuma is in at number 3.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! A change at the top of the order and it backfires big time for the Proteas. Arshdeep Singh finds the perfect length, just a smidge full and in the channel outside off. Singh gets this one to shape away beautifully and Ryan Rickelton ends up playing a loose drive away from the body. Rickelton ends up getting an outside edge that goes straight through to the keeper and KL Rahul pouches it safely. Rickelton departs for a duck again and South Africa are 1/1!

0.40

On the fuller side and around off, Rickelton leans on and blocks it towards short cover.

0.30

Hard length around middle and leg, Rickelton presses back and fails to get it away through the mid-wicket region.

0.20

Much better length! Pitches the ball up around off, no real movement in the air and Ryan Rickelton defends it right under the eyes.

0.11

QDK and South Africa are off the mark right away. Shorter in length and wide outside off, de Kock hangs back and taps it wide of the fielder at deep third for a single.

All in readiness for the decider to get underway. Nearly a full house already, and it will not be long before every seat is taken. The two umpires make their way out to the middle, followed by KL Rahul and his men. A surprise at the top of the order as Aiden Markram is not opening for the Proteas. It will be Ryan Rickelton to open the innings alongside Quinton de Kock. Arshdeep Singh will bowl the first over. Arshdeep to de Kock. Two slips in place. Let's go...

The captain of South Africa, Temba Bavuma says that he would have bowled first as well. Tells that it is now about getting off to a good start and setting it up for the middle order. Adds that the previous encounters were entertaining, and once again, it is a packed crowd. Informs that Tony de Zorzi and Nandre Burger miss out due to injuries, and he expects them to be out for a couple of weeks. Adds that Ryan Rickelton and Ottneil Baartman come back into the side.

KL Rahul, the Indian captain, says that they will bowl first because of the dew and adds that they trained here last evening, where the dew came in a bit later than in Ranchi and Raipur. Reckons that the surface looks good and adds that they are happy with the cricket they have played so far, even after failing to defend 360 runs, but that was more due to the conditions, and they are just looking to tweak a few little things here and there. Informs that they have one change with Tilak Varma coming in for Washington Sundar.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (WK), Ryan Rickelton (In for Tony de Zorzi), Temba Bavuma (C), Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman (In for Nandre Burger).

India (Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma (In for Washington Sundar), KL Rahul (C/WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.

TOSS - KL Rahul flips the coin with his left hand, and it works for him. India have won the toss and they will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta notes that it is a warm afternoon in Vizag and points out the boundary dimensions with boundaries measuring 63 and 62 metres square of the wicket and the straight boundary at 73 metres. Shaun Pollock adds that the wicket is nice and hard, and he expects another high-scoring game. Mentions there is a good grass covering that should keep the surface intact, and although there are a few cracks, he does not expect them to play any significant role. Feels that the captain winning the toss will once again prefer chasing. Deep shares that there was no noticeable dew around 8 pm local time yesterday, which will be some consolation for the team bowling second. He describes the surface as a mix of red and black soil, roughly a 70-30 combination, which should provide good bounce and carry. Reckons that if there is anything in it for the spinners, it is likely to come in the first half of the match, and the surface may play a little slower during the day.

Dew has had a major say in the two games so far, with batting under lights being easier, and that should be the case today as well. India have lost the flip of the coin for 20 ODIs in a row, with their last toss win coming in the 2023 ODI World Cup semifinal against New Zealand. The first two games have been quite the ride with the pendulum swinging back and forth. Let's hope we are treated to another entertaining game. Stick around for the toss and team news.

South Africa, meanwhile, showed tremendous character under pressure in the second ODI. Aiden Markram led the chase with a brilliant hundred, anchoring the innings and guiding his side to a famous win. Vital knocks from Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis and skipper Temba Bavuma ably supported him. Tony de Zorzi and Nandre Burger went down with hamstring discomfort in the last game and have been ruled out of the decider, which is a blow for the Proteas.

India come into this match with a batting lineup brimming with confidence. In the previous game, Virat Kohli made it back-to-back tons while Ruturaj Gaikwad notched up his maiden ODI century. Despite the late flourish from KL Rahul, the hosts could not provide the cushion for the bowlers in dewy conditions, something they will want to correct if they bat first again today. With the ball and in the field, India left much to be desired and will look to execute better.

A very warm welcome to one and all, joining us for the finale in this three-match ODI series as India take on South Africa at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag. It was a riveting second game in Raipur, where India piled up 358, but the Proteas chased it down with four balls to spare, and now the series stands deadlocked at 1-1.

... MATCH DAY ...

The stage is set for a thrilling finale as India lock horns with South Africa in the third and final One Day International, a winner-takes-all series decider at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. With the series perfectly poised at 1-1, after two high-scoring and intensely fought contests, the pressure is immense on both the stand-in Indian skipper, KL Rahul and his Proteas counterpart, Temba Bavuma, to lead their sides to victory. Both matches have been a feast for the batters, with the pitches and the ever-present factor of dew making life extremely difficult for the bowlers in the second innings. India's batting lineup has been phenomenal, with Virat Kohli continuing his incredible form by smashing back-to-back centuries. Ruturaj Gaikwad's maiden ODI ton in the second match provides a massive boost, complementing the aggressive starts provided by Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, and the explosive finishing of KL Rahul. The fast bowlers, particularly Prasidh Krishna, have been expensive and lack control in the late overs. The team's inability to defend a score of 358 highlights a tactical and execution problem, especially in the dew-affected second innings. On the other hand, South Africa have rebounded strongly from their first ODI loss, carrying all the momentum into the decider. Their batting depth and fearlessness in the chase were the main takeaways from the second ODI. The Proteas attack, led by the left-arm pacer Marco Jansen, has looked good in patches and the return of the likes of Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj in the 2nd ODI was somewhat positive. However, they now have a couple of injury concerns as Nandre Burger and Tony de Zorzi both seemed to suffer hamstring injuries. This decider is a battle between India's superstar top-order and South Africa's relentless batting depth. The result is likely to hinge on which team adapts better to the conditions, especially in managing the wet ball. Given the trend of chasing teams having a significant advantage in the series, the toss will undoubtedly be a crucial factor. Who are you backing for the win?
