Commentary
We are back for the chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of New Zealand. The returning John Campbell will open the innings alongside Alick Athanaze for West Indies. Kyle Jamieson will get proceedings underway with the ball. Let's go...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
The visitors will look to chase down 270 with confidence, whereas the Kiwis will be eager to utilize the new ball to get as many breakthroughs in the powerplay. The stage is set for an exciting second half of the contest! Stay tuned...
Windies' bowling was top-notch, with discipline and minimal extras conceded, but they missed a lot of chances. Shai Hope, behind the stumps, misses two clear stumpings and the fielding department as well dropped a couple of catches, which gave away the momentum back to the opposition. Jayden Seales bagged three scalps. Matthew Forde picked up a couple of wickets, while Greaves and Chase took one apiece, restricting NZ to a manageable total.
After being asked to bat first, New Zealand's innings got off to a rocky start, losing Will Young and Rachin Ravindra in the first 7 overs for just 24 runs. Devon Conway steadied the ship, falling just short of a run for his fifth half-century, before Daryl Mitchell took charge and anchored the inning exceptionally. He scored 119 off 118 deliveries and batted till the end overs to trigger the scoreline. The Kiwis' batting order showed depth, with contributions from the middle-order batter.
Windies have done a solid job restricting New Zealand to 269 at the halfway mark, setting up a thrilling chase. But we have to note that the pitch has given some assistance to the pacers, on top of that, the strong breeze helped the bowlers to swing the deliveries. The visitors will be feeling confident of getting a head start in the ODI series despite a late surge that saw the Kiwis score over 35 off the last 3 overs, giving them momentum heading into the break.

The call is for two and they get it as well. Full and nailed at the toes, Zakary Foulkes pushes the ball across gently through the mid-wicket region and scampers back for the second run. Jayden Seales closes out the innings well but New Zealand finish with 269/7 on the board.
Oh, too close to the stumps. Full of a good length, pace on this time and slanted just down leg. Zakary Foulkes shuffles aross to lap it away but misses and no wide is called either.
Slower ball, on a hard length and over middle, Foulkes backs away to open up the off side but misses out on the connection.
Wide! A quick bumper, angled in towards the batter. Foulkes back away to play the ramp but it is too high.
Good, early call and excellent running to back it up as well. Full and angled in at the toes, clipped away towards deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
Length ball on the pads, whipped away down to deep backward square leg for one. They look for two but won't get it.
Kyle Jamieson walks up next.
OUT! CAUGHT! Long boundary and just not enough power on it. Jayden Seales starts the final over with a pace-off delivery into the pitch. This is bowled outside off and Daryl Mitchell tries to fetch the pull over deep mid-wicket. However, it is a tired shot and the ball gets lofted down the throat of the fielder in the deep. Sherfane Rutherford takes a simple catch and that brings Mitchell's fabulous innings of 119 (118) to an end. Also, West Indies are penalized for slow over rate and have a less boundary-rider.

Back to over the wicket, bowled on a good length and outside off. This is heaved across to deep mid-wicket for just a single this time.
Comes around the wicket and darts a full ball well across the right-hander. MItchell shuffles past the off stump and heaves it towards mid-wicket for a couple of quick runs.
Oh, misses out, does Foulkes. A juicy full toss outside off, Foulkes slaps it back past the bowler but without much timing and picks up a single.
FOUR! And again! Even fuller and around off, Zakary Foulkes goes for the reverse scoop again and gives it a flick of the wrist to get it over short third for four more runs.
FOUR! Oh, that is skillful from Foulkes! Another full ball, wide outside off and a bit slower too. Zakary Foulkes brings out the reverse scoop and nails it over short third for a boundary. The 250 is now up for the Kiwis.
Wide! Full and wide, looking for the wide yorker but lands it just beyond the tramline outside off.

Commentary
Right then, that is it from the 1st ODI at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch but there's plenty of action still left in this series. The all-important 2nd ODI will be played on Wednesday, 19 November in Napier and it will begin at 1 am GMT. However, you can tune-in a lot sooner to catch our build-up to the game. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Mitchell Santner, skipper of New Zealand, says that the bowlers have done a great job. Continues to praise the masterclass innings of Daryl Mitchell and also says that he is an important asset to the team. Adds that his batters were smart to play according to the wind. Ends up saying that the dimension of the ground really matters, in short boundary venues, the short ball tactic wouldn't have worked, but it worked well in this and ends up saying that was there main plan to stop the Windies chasing the target.
West Indies skipper Shai Hope says that they must take the positives from this game but they also must be critical and the batters up top need to take more responsibility. Adds that Roston Chase was very good today and he played his part, especially in the backend of the innings and overall, the bowlers did well. Mentions that they need to find more ways to score and also negate those short balls better.
Daryl Mitchell is the Player of the Match. He says that it's always nice to provide a big score on the board to help the team win. Continues that it's a special venue for him and he has done a lot of hard work to get better. He says that the pitch provided some extra bounce, but they aimed to rotate the strike as much as they could, to keep the scoreboard ticking. Ends up saying that they will walk up tomorrow and plan accordingly to prepare for the next match.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Shai Hope won the toss and put the Kiwis into bat. There was plenty of grass on the deck and there was a steady breeze throughout the day that also helped the pacers and Matthew Forde did take advantage of the conditions, picking up two wickets in two deliveries. However, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell counter-attacked well and put on a 67-run stand to get the game back in the balance. It was a tussle right throughout but Mitchell made the difference with a fine hundred and got his side to a solid total. For West Indies, Jayden Seales picked up three wickets but it was Roston Chase with his economical spell that ket the Kiwis from getting close to the 300-run mark.
West Indies took the game deep but they will feel that they should have taken on the bowlers a bit more in the first 20-odd overs. After the early dismissal of John Campbell, Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty stitched together a steady stand but were a bit too pragmatic in their approach and once set, both of them got out. The middle order came good with the likes of Shai Hope and Roston Chase scoring valuable runs but it was Sherfane Rutherford with a half-century, who really got them back in the contest. Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd did their best and rode their luck but it was just a bridge too far for them.
New Zealand will thank their lucky stars as they let the Windies off the hook and it was a torrid outing in terms of catching under the Christchurch night sky tonight. However, the pacers did a good job early in the innings and Kyle Jamieson was the pick of the bowlers as he used that extra lift off the deck really well and picked up 3 wickets as well. Mitchell Santner did a great holding job as he usually does and the likes of Matt Henry and Zakary Foulkes too bowled economical spells, picking up a wicket each. Jacob Duffy was a bit off color and bowled plenty of wides but did manage to hold his nerve right at the death to see his side over the line.
Wow, now that was a tight contest, probably not the best in terms of quality but sometimes when things get close, we get to see a lot of action. West Indies gave it everything towards the end but it was the foundation laid down earlier in the chase by the Kiwi bowlers and wickets at crucial stages that got them the win and they take a 1-0 lead in this three-match ODI series.

Drinks break! This has been a watchful chase so far from West Indies and for a team that bats so deep, one would think they would take a few more risks up top. However, the set batters have thrown their wickets away and a lot rests on the shoulders of skipper Shai Hope and the southpaw Sherfane Rutherford to give them a platform from where they can launch. Having said that, the Kiwi bowlers have been immaculate with their lines and lengths and have hardly given away bad balls. 163 needed off 114 balls and with the Windies firepower waiting in the shed, this could still go down to the wire. Also, Michael Bracewell has now been tossed the ball.

Done and dusted with the pre-match proceedings and it is now time to get the play underway! The umpires are out in the middle and the West Indian players can be seen forming a huddle before taking their places on the field. It will be the duo of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra to open the innings for the Kiwis. Matthew Forde has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
Just a few minutes to go for the start of the game but first, the two sets of players will line up for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of West Indies first, followed by that of New Zealand.
JUST IN - Shamar Springer has been presented with his ODI cap by Shai Hope, making him the 229th player to represent West Indies in One-Day Internationals.
PITCH REPORT - Frankie McKay is pitchside with her insights. She says there is a slight grass cover on the track, giving it a papery feel, indicating it will have some bounce. She continues that 307 is the winning average here, but what makes this venue interesting is the dimension. It's 80 meters down the ground, 75 meters at the leg side of a right-hander, but 85 on the off side. ENds up saying that batters need to be tactful to scoop some boundaries.
Mitchell Santner, skipper of New Zealand, says that it seems like a balance wicket and they will try to put up big score. Continues that they are aware with the conditions of the pitch but he reckons that the strong wind will be a crucial factor in the match. Ends up saying that they have got four seamers once again in the playing XI and three changes in the starting line up.
Shai Hope, the skipper of West Indies, says that they see some advantage in the conditions, possibly with the new ball. Shai emphasizes the importance of assessing conditions in New Zealand and exploiting them to their favor. With World Cup qualification on the line, every win counts for them. The new opener, John Campbell, and debutant Shamar Springer add fresh energy to the team. Their predominantly seam-heavy lineup, with only one spinner in Chase, indicates they might be looking to utilize the pace and conditions to maximum effect.
West Indies (Playing XI) - John Campbell, Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty, Shai Hope (C) (WK), Sherfane Rutherford, Justin Greaves, Matthew Forde, Romario Shepherd, Roston Chase, Shamar Springer, Jayden Seales.
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (WK), Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Zakary Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy.
TOSS - Shai Hope wins the toss and West Indies have elected to BOWL first.
The anticipation is building for what could be an exhilarating contest, as the weather is just perfect for a day of cricket. Well, if you have a look at the head-to-head stats, both teams have played 68 times against each other in ODIs, where the Windies have won 31 times and the Kiwis emerged victorious on 30 occasions, and the rest of the seven matches ended with no result. So, which team are you supporting? Stick around with us as the toss and team updates will be coming up shortly.
West Indies, though considered underdogs by many, come into this series with serious intent. Their batting has been powered by Shai Hope, who remains a reliable anchor, while Keacy Carty has shown glimpses of brilliance at the upper middle order. With the ball, Jayden Seales is likely to lead the attack. He’s been their most consistent wicket-taker in recent times. Windies’ strategy will probably hinge on early breakthroughs, leveraging Seales’ pace, and putting up a competitive total so their hitters can play freely in the back half of the innings.
New Zealand enter this match on a high note, as they recently swept England 3-0 in their ODI series. Their batting is anchored by the in-form Daryl Mitchell, who’s been piling up runs, and Rachin Ravindra, who will try to provide the ideal start to his side. On the bowling front, pace spearheads Jacob Duffy and Matt Henry have been among the standout performers, so keep your spotlights on them. With a balanced side and strong home advantage, the Kiwis will likely look to bat deep, rotate their bowlers smartly, and control the innings tempo.
Hello and a very warm welcome to all the cricket fans joining us for the build up of today's match! Tomorrow kicks off the first ODI of the three-match series between New Zealand and West Indies at Hagley Oval Stadium, Christchurch, and it promises to be a compelling contest. The Black Caps will be eager to assert dominance on home soil, while the Windies will be looking to upset their opposition with their firepower and strike bowlers.
... MATCHDAY ...
The T20Is are done and dusted with New Zealand taking the series, but not without the West Indies reminding everyone that Caribbean cricket still has enough fire to burn anyone on its day. Now, the all-format tour shifts gears into the longer white-ball lane. The ODIs. Some call it the ‘medieval format’ - not frenetic enough for the T20 generation, not purist enough for the Test traditionalists. Suspended in the middle, constantly fighting for relevance in a world obsessed with sixes, highlights, and instant gratification. But with the next ICC Cricket World Cup drifting closer on the horizon, this in-between format suddenly matters again. A lot. This series is a laboratory. Combinations to test, bench strength to assess, roles to define, and nerves to harden. Who handles pressure? Who carries momentum? Who emerges as a certainty and who slips into doubt? These answers won’t come from T20s. They come from ODIs. All of it begins at Ōtautahi - Christchurch - at the picturesque Hagley Oval, hosting its first ODI since 2022. And if you want a completed ODI? You have to go back to 2021. Yes, it’s been that long. Now, onto the home side. New Zealand may have just wrapped up a T20I series win, but ODI cricket is an entirely different creature. Fortunately for them, they’ve been a seriously consistent outfit in this very format. A Champions Trophy final berth, a 3-0 sweep of Pakistan at home, plus a tri-series win in Pakistan - the Kiwis have built a quiet, steady rhythm in ODIs. The challenge? Injuries. A lot of them. Big names are missing from both batting and bowling. And then there’s Kane Williamson, who’s retired from T20Is, skipping the ODIs, saving every ounce of focus for the Test series ahead. In his absence, the calm, calculating Mitchell Santner leads a unit that, on paper, still looks balanced enough to trouble any side. Expectations will inevitably fall on Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra - both elite, both classy, both a bit short on runs recently. Tom Latham isn’t in the best of touch either, with only 64 runs from his last five innings, which is uncharacteristically quiet for someone who is usually New Zealand's ODI metronome. A lot will rest on two of their most consistent performers with the bat - Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell. Chapman walks into this series in the kind of form that gives any dressing room a bit of comfort, with three fifty-plus knocks and a century in his last five innings. And alongside him is the ever-reliable Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in this format this calendar year, stacking up 642 runs with the sort of assurance that has become his trademark. Together, they form the backbone the hosts will lean on when things get tight. And bowling-wise, Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy have been their best bowlers this year, and lead the power-packed pace quintet, with Blair Tickner joining the squad after a very successful stint against England. Santner and Bracewell are the only reliable spin-bowling options who are well-equipped with batting skills, which provides enough depth in both departments. Across the field, ODI cricket has been the format where West Indies have struggled to find their footing in recent years. The talent is there, no one questions that, but consistency has been the missing ingredient. This will be their fifth ODI series of the year, and they have managed to win only one so far, against Pakistan, while their most recent assignment in the subcontinent ended in a stinging 2-1 loss to Bangladesh. They may not be stacking up wins yet, but there is a sense that West Indies are quietly piecing together a side that could find its footing sooner rather than later, provided they finally solve their jigsaw of combinations. Keacy Carty and skipper Shai Hope have been the pillars of their batting this year, both crossing the 500-run mark, but the drop-off after them is where the alarm bells ring. Whether it’s too much chopping and changing or simply a lack of consistent returns from the rest, the middle order has often been left exposed. That is why Alick Athanaze and Justin Greaves will be crucial in giving this line-up the stability it desperately needs. And when it comes to power-hitting, they do have the firepower. Sherfane Rutherford brings the flair, and Romario Shepherd can clear large distances without breaking a sweat. With only a couple of spin options, including Roston Chase, the weight of the bowling responsibility falls on the pace unit. Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde lead that group, while Shamar Springer and the young Johann Layne slot in as the supporting cast. It has been almost eight years since West Indies last played an ODI series in this part of the world, and since then, the entire core of their team has changed. Most of this squad hasn’t experienced these conditions. And if you look at history, the last time they won an ODI series in New Zealand’s backyard was all the way back in 1995. They did come close in 2013/14, managing a 2-2 draw, but a full series win has remained elusive for nearly three decades. While New Zealand hold a tremendous record at Hagley Oval, winning four out of the last five completed matches here. Can the Windies put on a serious challenge to Santner and Co.? Or will Hope’s West Indies rise up to their own hopes? A riveting series is on the cards.
