Commentary

Right then, after the win in the T20I series, the Kiwis have also sealed the ODI series against West Indies with a game to spare. Yet again, things went down to the wire, but the hosts had enough firepower to get them home. Next up is the 3rd and final ODI, which will be played in Hamilton on Saturday, 22 November. The game will begin at 1 am GMT but you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Cheers!

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand, says that there were a few blokes in the team who thought they wouldn't get a game in today but he feels that it is so difficult to defend on a ground like this. Adds that once the ball got older, one could get in and score heavily, just like Shai Hope did and also the likes of Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway. Reckons that West Indies batted well in the second half of their innings but they did well to keep wickets in hand and exploit things at the death.

West Indies skipper, Shai Hope is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his sensational ton. Hope says that he always looks at it one way, and even though he scored 109 runs, it wasn't enough, so he isn't pleased with himself. Adds that he was trying to put pressure on the opposition and not allow the bowlers to settle and set up for a big finish. On his record of scoring centuries against all Test-playing nations, Hope says that he is least concerned by that record and he would rather score just 2 or 5 runs and win the match rather than score a ton and lose the game. On the total on the board, Hope says that he felt it was enough but he was proved wrong and they could have done better up top with the bat and also didn't force the batters to hit down the ground on a ground where the boundaries were short square of the wicket. On Romario Shepherd's injury, he says that it was a loss but they had enough quality in the bowling attack to go on and do the job. Adds that they have pushed the home side and have now lost about 4 or so close games in the final over but they need to win such games in the future.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the day, the players were welcomed by a steady drizzle, which lasted quite a while and at one point in time, hopes of getting a game in seemed bleak but thankfully, the rain stopped and the ground staff did an immaculate job mopping things up. New Zealand bowled first on a deck that seemed lively to begin with and the likes of Matt Henry and Nathan Smith exploited conditions brilliantly. The Windies were seemingly heading towards a meager total but up stepped their skipper Shai Hope and scored a quikfire century to take his team to a solid total of 247 runs.

West Indies will be heartbroken after that loss and one could see how much it meant for Jayden Seales, who gave it his all but one bad ball in the final over and it was all over. Just like with the bat, the Windies didn't start positively with the ball. Even though Matthew Forde bowled a good spell, they failed to get wickets and the change bowlers were being put away with ease. It was Justin Greaves who gave the Windies their first wicket and they did well to quickly build on it as 106/1 quickly became 136/3. They managed to pick up a couple of more wickets at crucial junctures but failed to stop the boundaries at the death.

A target of 248 runs in 34 overs wasn't going to be an easy one but the Kiwi openers laid down the foundation right at the top. Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway stitched together a century stand, the first one by a Kiwi opening pair for well over 2 years but just as Ravindra looked in overdrive mode, he got out. Conway was striking the ball beautifully but the likes of Will Young and Mark Chapman came in and went out quite early. Conway also fell just after breaching the 90-run mark and the hosts needed a stand. However, Michael Bracewell flopped once again but that is when Mitchell Santner came in and stepped up once again. Tom Latham paced his innings brilliantly and Santner's lusty blows made sure that the current and former Kiwi skippers got their side to victory.

What a dramatic end to a dramatic day in Napier and at the end of it all, it is New Zealand who seal the three-match ODI series 2-0 with a game in hand. West Indies gave it their all once again but it just wasn't enough and the Kiwis found a way to get over the line.

33.31

That's it, Mitchell Santner hits the winning runs and brings up an 11th straight bilateral ODI series win at home for the Kiwis. Full and outside off, Santner crunches the cover drive through the gap, but the ball holds up before reaching the ropes, and the batters have to get across for a single to seal the win. New Zealand win by 5 wickets, and Jayden Seales can be seen heartbroken.

33.21

Full and straight, Latham walks inside the line and heaves it away to deep mid-wicket for a single. Scores are now level.

33.25nb

NO BALL AND FOUR! Oh, deary me! That should be the game for New Zealand. Jayden Seales goes for the yorker but the ball slips out of his hand and it ends up being a chest-high full toss around off. Also, Tom Latham does well to adjust and just ramps it over the keeper's head for a boundary. Just 2 needed now for the win. Free Hit coming up as well...

33.11

A low full toss, well outside off, Mitchell Santner walks across and picks it up slogging it without much timing to deep mid-wicket for just a single.

8 needed off the final over and here's Jayden Seales to bowl it. Can he defend 7 runs and be the hero for his team? Let's find out...

Oh, that is a crucial dot ball for the Windies. A yorker around off stump, slower as well, Santner walks across to pick it over the off side but misses.

Slower one, into the pitch and over off, Latham helps the pull wide of short fine leg but the fielder over there does well to keep it down to a single.

32.14

FOUR! Gets the boundary off the first ball of the over. This is bowled full and angled in towards the off stump, Santner backs away and hammers it through cover-point for a boundary.

FOUR! Bowled full and around off, Santner smacks it down the ground and towards long off. Shamar Springer runs across from long on and puts in the dive to save a couple of runs for his team. Commentary

Welcome back for the run-chase. The players head back to the middle. Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway stride out to open the innings for New Zealand. It will be Matthew Forde to begin with the ball for the West Indies. Here we go!

…THE RUN CHASE…

Now, needing 248 for victory, New Zealand will need a composed batting effort, with at least one player stepping up for a big score to guide the team toward what would be an unassailable 2-0 lead. Will the home side chase it down, or will the West Indies bowlers rise to defend the total and level the series? We’ll find out soon. Stay tuned for the second essay.

Kiwi pacer, Nathan Smith, is down for a chat. He says that it was nice to get back into the game and get a few wickets. Adds that there was some movement but applauds Shai Hope and a few other batters, who punished them whenever they missed their lengths. Reckons that the total on board is gettable and hopes that he isn't needed and someone up the order gets a hundred.

For New Zealand, Nathan Smith was the standout bowler, claiming 4/42 in a crucial spell, while Kyle Jamieson made early inroads with three wickets. Mitchell Santner and Blair Tickner also contributed with one wicket each. However, Tickner and Henry were a bit expensive, conceding over 123 runs in their combined 13 overs. The West Indies capitalized on any loose deliveries and posted a strong total from a tricky position.

The innings, however, didn’t start smoothly for the Windies. Both Kyle Jamieson and Matt Henry bowled with precision, swinging the ball both ways, and reduced the visitors to a precarious 86/5 by the 16th over. It was then that Shai Hope anchored the innings, forging crucial partnerships with Justin Greaves, Matthew Forde, and Romario Shepherd. While the others rotated the strike, Hope remained steadfast at the crease, steadily guiding his team close to the 250-run mark.

An extraordinary and unbeaten knock of 109 off just 69 balls from West Indies captain Shai Hope has propelled his side to a formidable 247/9 in this shortened 34-over contest. The last nine overs alone yielded a staggering 111 runs, leaving the visitors in a commanding position as they headed into the dressing room.

33.40

Full on off. Hope drives out to the sweeper and turns down the single.

33.36

SIX! MASSIVE HIT, AND SHAI HOPE GETS HIS HUNDRED IN STYLE! Slower ball on the fuller side, in the slot on middle and leg. Hope clears the front leg and smokes it cleanly over the bowler, toward the sight screen for a 95m clean hit. That brings up his 19th ODI century from 66 balls, and his first against New Zealand. According to the on-air commentators, Hope has now scored an ODI ton against every Test-playing nation, which is a staggering feat.

33.21

Back of a length, around the hip. Jayden Seales tucks into the leg side and takes a single.

Jayden Seales is the last batter for the West Indies.

32.44

FOUR! NICE AND ELEGANT! Low full toss on off. Shai Hope times it nicely through the gap at extra cover and mid off for a lovely boundary. Hope is just a hit away from a brilliant hundred.

32.31

All in readiness now. The teams and the umpires make their way out to the ground. John Campbell and Ackeem Auguste stride out to open for the West Indies. It will be Matt Henry to begin with the ball for New Zealand. We are moments away from the live action.

Blair Tickner is up for a chat. He says the forecast has changed, so he’s hoping to get some gametime. He didn’t play the first game, so he’s fresh and ready to go. He mentions that the team has often been put in tough positions, but winning from there helps the group. Regarding the pitch, he notes that it’s usually dry, but with current conditions, some pace and bounce can be expected. He emphasizes the need to improve every time to consistently be in winning positions. The boundaries are smaller compared to those of Hagley Oval so planning will be crucial. He finishes by saying it’s great to be part of the group, playing alongside talented bowlers of different types, and he’s glad to be contributing.

Under the revised playing conditions, four bowlers will be allowed to bowl a maximum of seven overs each, while one bowler can bowl up to six overs. The first Powerplay will be during the initial seven overs.

West Indies skipper Shai Hope says they would have preferred to bowl first, but now the focus is on putting solid runs on the board. He adds that while the lower order has been contributing well, the top order needs to step up and deliver big scores. Hope shares that the team is confident, having played well in several close games. He emphasizes the importance of embracing the challenge and coming out on top. He also confirms one change in the lineup, with Ackeem Auguste replacing Alick Athanaze.

Mitchell Santner, the New Zealand skipper, wins the toss and elects to bowl. He says it’s always an advantage to know the target in these conditions. Santner adds that the West Indies possess a powerful lineup and are never out of the contest. He concludes by confirming that Daryl Mitchell misses out, with Mark Chapman coming into the XI.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Will Young, Mark Chapman (in for Daryl Mitchell), Tom Latham(WK), Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner(C), Nathan Smith (in for Zakary Foulkes), Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Blair Tickner (in for Jacob Duffy).

West Indies (Playing XI) - John Campbell, Ackeem Auguste (in for Alick Athanaze), Keacy Carty, Shai Hope(C/WK), Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Justin Greaves, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Shamar Springer, Jayden Seales.

TOSS - New Zealand have won the toss and opted to BOWL.

UPDATE - 3.23 am GMT - Good news, everyone! The toss is scheduled for 3.30 am GMT, just under ten minutes from now, with play set to begin at 4.00 am GMT. It will be a 34-overs-per-side contest. Let’s hope the rain stays away.

UPDATE - 3.13 am GMT - The rain has eased to a light drizzle, and only the pitch remains under covers. The super soppers are making their rounds to dry the outfield. McLean Park is known for its excellent drainage, so once the rain stops, play shouldn’t take long to resume. The umpires are in discussion with the groundstaff, and there’s some movement suggesting the covers may soon come off. Let’s hope the weather holds from here.

UPDATE - 2.35 am GMT - The broadcast is back and scenes from Napier show a light but persistent drizzle, which is frustrating for everyone. We can also see a few of the players and even commentators chatting with an umbrella over their heads. According to a few sources, the cut-off time for the start of a 20-overs-a-side contest is 6.10 am GMT, which is still a long way away but if the rain keeps playing hide and seek like this, time will slip by quickly. Let's stay hopeful for now.

UPDATE - 2.12 am GMT - There is a ticker on the screen which shows that the toss will take place at 2.15 am GMT, which is in just a few minutes' time. This is very positive news and it seems like the umpires want to make the most of the dry conditions right away. Well, well! Just when the clock ticks over to 2.15 am GMT, the ticker shows that the 'toss is delayed,' which most likely means that the rain is back or at best the ground staff expect some rain pretty soon. The wait goes on...

UPDATE - 2.03 am GMT - The visuals from McLean Park show that the rain has once again stopped but it is still gloomy out there in the middle. The good news is that the umpires are now in the middle and they are having a chat with the ground staff. The previous spell of rain didn't have much ill effect on the conditions but the question now is whether we will get a sustained spell without any rain or not. Let's hope we do, and if that's the case, we should get some official news pretty soon, so stay tuned for more updates.

UPDATE - 1.34 am GMT - We have some more news coming in from the ground now. The toss was rescheduled for 2 am GMT and things looked positive for a while but the rain was back and we will once again have a delay. Also, the main pitch is currently under covers, but the rain seems to be fairly light right now. Let's hope we get a big chunk of the dry spell soon, so that we can get the play underway. Stick around for more updates.

UPDATE - 1 am GMT - Frankie Mackay, a fomer Whiter Ferns, later reports from pitchside that the covers are coming off and even though there's a bit more rain on the radar, the ground staff are hoping that it will skirt away from the venue and she adds that the surface in Napier has been resurfaced recently and it if one of the fastest drying grounds in the country.

UPDATE - 12.51 am GMT - Live visuals show grey skies and light rain still falling in the background. The ground staff are wiping off a bit of water off the outfield, not quite sure why but the on-air commentators mention that Napier is one of the driest parts of the country. A minute or so later, there's more activity near the main cover and we might just see the ground staff take the covers off here. Fingers crossed.

Not the news we would have wanted to hear but it's raining in Napier and for now, the toss has been delayed. There is forecast for more rain as well and all we can do is hope and wait for things to get better. Stay tuned for further updates.

So, will the Black Caps wrap up the series today, or can the West Indies stage a fightback to force a decider? We’ll find out soon. Toss and team news coming up. Stay tuned.

As for the West Indies, they were competitive throughout the first match but fell just short. Their bowlers did well to restrict New Zealand under 270, with Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde sharing five wickets and Roston Chase delivering a tidy spell. In the chase, several batters made promising starts but couldn’t convert, though Sherfane Rutherford scored a valuable 55 before falling at a crucial moment. Late cameos from Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd kept hopes alive, but the Men in Maroon ultimately couldn’t cross the line. They will take heart from their performance and look to hit back strongly to keep the series alive.

In the first ODI, New Zealand posted 269/7 after being put in to bat. Daryl Mitchell was the star of the innings with a superb 119, supported well by Devon Conway, Michael Bracewell, and Zak Foulkes. With the ball, Kyle Jamieson led the attack with three wickets, while Matt Henry, Foulkes, and Mitchell Santner kept things tight to secure a narrow 7-run victory. The hosts, however, will be without Mitchell for this match due to injury, with Henry Nicholls replacing him. New Zealand will hope to replicate their all-round effort and seal the series.

Hello, and a warm welcome to our coverage of the second ODI of this three-match series from McLean Park in Napier. After edging out a thrilling win in the opening game, the Black Caps will be aiming to seal the series 2–0, while the West Indies will be desperate to bounce back and level things up.

 ... MATCH DAY ...

'Another chapter of tension awaits in this see-saw series!' After a gripping first ODI where New Zealand scraped home by just 7 runs, the stage is set for a fiery second encounter between the Kiwis and West Indies. The opener had everything - Daryl Mitchell’s composed hundred anchoring the hosts to a competitive total, Kyle Jamieson’s triple strike keeping New Zealand alive in the crunch moments, and a Windies chase full of promise but lacking that one big partnership. Most of the visiting batters got off to starts, yet only Sherfane Rutherford managed to convert, playing a blistering knock that kept the game alive until the final overs, with Justin Greaves and Sherfane Rutherford also fighting hard to take them close. For New Zealand, the batting still revolves around the stability of Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Tom Latham, while Will Young’s aggressive approach continues to give them momentum at the top. However, Mitchell has been ruled out for the remainder of this series due to a groin issue, which will be a big loss, but Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner's all-brilliance could well make up for it. Their bowling attack has clear strengths - Jamieson’s bounce, Matt Henry’s discipline, and Jacob Duffy’s knack of picking key wickets make them a dangerous unit, but death bowling remains a soft spot - something that nearly cost them the first game, and we saw that in the T20I series as well. As for West Indies, their power-packed lineup is never short of flair - Shai Hope’s experience, Keacy Carty’s elegance, and Sherfane Rutherford’s return to form give them the ability to chase or set big totals, but their problem lies in inconsistency and the lack of someone to bat through the innings. With the ball, Matthew Forde and Jayden Seales have been impressive with swing and accuracy, and Roston Chase’s variations in the middle overs keep things tight, yet their inability to strike early or contain in the final overs continues to hurt them. With both sides showing glimpses of brilliance but not quite putting a complete performance together, the second ODI promises another nail-biter, and possibly a defining shift in momentum in this hard-fought series.
