OUT! LBW! A huge appeal and up goes the finger. Michael Bracewell does review it pretty quickly. Matthew Forde comes back into the attack and starts over the wicket. Bowls it on a good length around leg stump and attacks the pads. Bracewell just gets inside the line to swing it leg side but misses and gets pinged on the pads right in front of the stumps. The third umpire checks UltraEdge first and there's no bat involved and Ball Tracking comes up with three reds. The on-field decision stands and West Indies pick up another timely wicket.

OUT! CAUGHT! Oh, a sharp catch from Roston Chase and Shamar Springer gets the big wicket for his team. Banged in short and a bit wide outside off, this one bounces a bit extra. Devon Conway backs away to cut but can't control the shot and hits it flat towards point. Roston Chase takes a smart catch with both hands in front of his face and Conway has to walk back for 90. New Zealand now need 82 runs off 51 balls. That is also a maiden ODI wicket for Springer.

The ball is around shoulder height and Mark Chapman gets inside the line to pull but he tries to help it rather than really go after it. The ball balloons down to fine leg where Greaves charges in and takes a brilliant catch, which gets Seales all pumped up and West Indies are right back in it.

Drinks break! A timely breakthrough for the West Indies as New Zealand were really starting to get on a roll here. But even after the carnage, the required rate is over 8 runs per over, and that's because the Windies scored so many in the last 9 overs of their innings. The game is nicely poised, but the Kiwis do have the wickets in hand. If Devon Conway gets out now, West Indies will have a chance to build some pressure on the new batters. OUT! CAUGHT! A bit too aggressive from Rachin Ravindra and that is a very good catch from Roston Chase. Justin Greaves stays over the wicket and pushes a fuller-length delivery just across the off stump. Ravindra gets low and looks to go over covers but ends up slicing it over point. Is that a run out? Shamar Springer has done superbly to get a hand on it and Rachin Ravindra might be in trouble here. The on-field umpire has sent it upstairs and the third umpire finds that Springer did get a hand on it but Ravindra did well to get his bat back in. NOT OUT!

SIX! Rachin Ravindra has let loose here and he brings up his FIFTY as well, his 6th in ODIs. Fired in full and straight, Ravindra simply goes down on one knee and plays a whippy slog sweep, nailing it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. New Zealand starting to cruise along now.

Blair Tickner is up for a chat. He says the forecast has changed, so he’s hoping to get some gametime. He didn’t play the first game, so he’s fresh and ready to go. He mentions that the team has often been put in tough positions, but winning from there helps the group. Regarding the pitch, he notes that it’s usually dry, but with current conditions, some pace and bounce can be expected. He emphasizes the need to improve every time to consistently be in winning positions. The boundaries are smaller compared to those of Hagley Oval so planning will be crucial. He finishes by saying it’s great to be part of the group, playing alongside talented bowlers of different types, and he’s glad to be contributing.

Under the revised playing conditions, four bowlers will be allowed to bowl a maximum of seven overs each, while one bowler can bowl up to six overs. The first Powerplay will be during the initial seven overs.

West Indies skipper Shai Hope says they would have preferred to bowl first, but now the focus is on putting solid runs on the board. UPDATE - 3.13 am GMT - The rain has eased to a light drizzle, and only the pitch remains under covers. The super soppers are making their rounds to dry the outfield. McLean Park is known for its excellent drainage, so once the rain stops, play shouldn’t take long to resume. The umpires are in discussion with the groundstaff, and there’s some movement suggesting the covers may soon come off. Let’s hope the weather holds from here.

UPDATE - 2.35 am GMT - The broadcast is back and scenes from Napier show a light but persistent drizzle, which is frustrating for everyone. We can also see a few of the players and even commentators chatting with an umbrella over their heads. According to a few sources, the cut-off time for the start of a 20-overs-a-side contest is 6.10 am GMT, which is still a long way away but if the rain keeps playing hide and seek like this, time will slip by quickly. Let's stay hopeful for now.

UPDATE - 2.12 am GMT - There is a ticker on the screen which shows that the toss will take place at 2.15 am GMT, which is in just a few minutes' time. This is very positive news and it seems like the umpires want to make the most of the dry conditions right away. Well, well! Just when the clock ticks over to 2.15 am GMT, the ticker shows that the 'toss is delayed,' which most likely means that the rain is back or at best the ground staff expect some rain pretty soon. The wait goes on...

UPDATE - 2.03 am GMT - The visuals from McLean Park show that the rain has once again stopped but it is still gloomy out there in the middle. The good news is that the umpires are now in the middle and they are having a chat with the ground staff. The previous spell of rain didn't have much ill effect on the conditions but the question now is whether we will get a sustained spell without any rain or not. Let's hope we do, and if that's the case, we should get some official news pretty soon, so stay tuned for more updates.

UPDATE - 1.34 am GMT - We have some more news coming in from the ground now. The toss was rescheduled for 2 am GMT and things looked positive for a while but the rain was back and we will once again have a delay. Also, the main pitch is currently under covers, but the rain seems to be fairly light right now. Let's hope we get a big chunk of the dry spell soon, so that we can get the play underway. UPDATE - 1 am GMT - Frankie Mackay, a fomer Whiter Ferns, later reports from pitchside that the covers are coming off and even though there's a bit more rain on the radar, the ground staff are hoping that it will skirt away from the venue and she adds that the surface in Napier has been resurfaced recently and it if one of the fastest drying grounds in the country.

UPDATE - 12.51 am GMT - Live visuals show grey skies and light rain still falling in the background. The ground staff are wiping off a bit of water off the outfield, not quite sure why but the on-air commentators mention that Napier is one of the driest parts of the country. A minute or so later, there's more activity near the main cover and we might just see the ground staff take the covers off here. Fingers crossed.

Not the news we would have wanted to hear but it's raining in Napier and for now, the toss has been delayed. There is forecast for more rain as well and all we can do is hope and wait for things to get better. Stay tuned for further updates.

As for the West Indies, they were competitive throughout the first match but fell just short. Their bowlers did well to restrict New Zealand under 270, with Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde sharing five wickets and Roston Chase delivering a tidy spell. In the chase, several batters made promising starts but couldn’t convert, though Sherfane Rutherford scored a valuable 55 before falling at a crucial moment. Late cameos from Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd kept hopes alive, but the Men in Maroon ultimately couldn’t cross the line. They will take heart from their performance and look to hit back strongly to keep the series alive.

In the first ODI, New Zealand posted 269/7 after being put in to bat. Daryl Mitchell was the star of the innings with a superb 119, supported well by Devon Conway, Michael Bracewell, and Zak Foulkes. With the ball, Kyle Jamieson led the attack with three wickets, while Matt Henry, Foulkes, and Mitchell Santner kept things tight to secure a narrow 7-run victory. The hosts, however, will be without Mitchell for this match due to injury, with Henry Nicholls replacing him. New Zealand will hope to replicate their all-round effort and seal the series.

'Another chapter of tension awaits in this see-saw series!' After a gripping first ODI where New Zealand scraped home by just 7 runs, the stage is set for a fiery second encounter between the Kiwis and West Indies. The opener had everything - Daryl Mitchell’s composed hundred anchoring the hosts to a competitive total, Kyle Jamieson’s triple strike keeping New Zealand alive in the crunch moments, and a Windies chase full of promise but lacking that one big partnership. Most of the visiting batters got off to starts, yet only Sherfane Rutherford managed to convert, playing a blistering knock that kept the game alive until the final overs, with Justin Greaves and Sherfane Rutherford also fighting hard to take them close. For New Zealand, the batting still revolves around the stability of Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Tom Latham, while Will Young’s aggressive approach continues to give them momentum at the top. However, Mitchell has been ruled out for the remainder of this series due to a groin issue, which will be a big loss, but Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner's all-brilliance could well make up for it. Their bowling attack has clear strengths - Jamieson’s bounce, Matt Henry’s discipline, and Jacob Duffy’s knack of picking key wickets make them a dangerous unit, but death bowling remains a soft spot - something that nearly cost them the first game, and we saw that in the T20I series as well. As for West Indies, their power-packed lineup is never short of flair - Shai Hope’s experience, Keacy Carty’s elegance, and Sherfane Rutherford’s return to form give them the ability to chase or set big totals, but their problem lies in inconsistency and the lack of someone to bat through the innings.
