Right then, that is it from this thrilling encounter where Hyderabad just get the better of Punjab. The action in the Indian T20 League 2024 continues on 10th April, Wednesday when table-toppers Rajasthan take on Gujarat. That match will begin on 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Nitish Kumar Reddy is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his incredible knock and contributions with the ball as well. He says that it is a big contribution for him and for his team. Adds that the seamers were bowling well so he attacked the spinners. Ends by saying that he just want to keep doing well in all three departments for his team.

Pat Cummins, the victorious skipper of Hyderabad says it was a great game of cricket and it got pretty close in the end. Says they (Punjab) bowled pretty good as well and says they were quite happy to get to 180. Adds that Bhuvi and him started off pretty well and mounted the pressure from the get-go. Also says that they have plenty of left-armers and right-armers, and the plan was to just try to bowl to the long boundary. Further says that Nitish was pretty awesome and he was overall fantastic with the ball and also in the field as well.

Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of Punjab says Shashank and Ashutosh brought them back in the game. He says that losing wickets early inside the Powerplay did the damage for them and certainly put them behind the game. States that the wicket wasn't providing the bounce so they had to rethink their strategies and adjust the shots accordingly. Reckons that they could have stopped the opposition well 15-20 runs short and that dropped catch in the last ball of final over proved to be costly. On being asked about Ashutosh and Shashank's heroics, he says they are fearless cricketers and have shown great capability as well. However, there's always a room for improvement and ends up by saying that they will come back stronger in the next game.

Presentation Time...

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is up for a quick chat. He says that it is the beauty of the T20 games. States that the wicket changed a lot in the last few overs. On being asked about that stumping, he says he asked Klaasen to come up to the stumps as there was no movement and Shikhar Dhawan was stepping out of the crease to find boundaries. Adds it was a nail-biting game and good to be on the winning side. Says that it depends on how you prepare and he tries to keep things simple and sticks to the basics. On being asked about Ashutosh's batting, he says it's good to see young talents coming out.

Earlier in the game, Hyderabad huffed and puffed to a good total. A couple of cameos upfront and towards the end helped them but it was mainly because of the fantastic half-century from the youngster Nitish Kumar Reddy. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab with a magnificent four-wicket haul. Sam Curran and Harshal Patel got a couple of wickets each while Kagiso Rabada chipped in with one. While chasing, Punjab were poor in the Powerplay, but towards the end they got close but had to suffer heartbreak.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, were right on the money with the ball from the start. It was Captain Pat Cummins who provided them with the early breakthrough by getting rid of Jonny Bairstow. That was followed up by a couple of more wickets by Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the help of some excellent keeping from Heinrich Klaasen. They kept the runs in check and built pressure which rewarded them with another wicket as T Natarajan got Sam Curran out. Then they let the opponents settle in for a bit but a couple of wickets from Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jaydev Unadkat tilted the game towards them. A couple of expensive overs made things closer than they would have hoped but Natarajan bowled a fine 19th over. Jaydev Unadkat conceded the most runs in the 20th over in a run chase, but still, they were able to get the win.

Punjab failed to get off to a good start and their batters looked in a hurry in the Powerplay. Some strange shot selections from them and they were three down inside the six overs with not much on the board. In fact, it was the lowest Powerplay score in this season so far. It was then the duo of Sikandar Raza and Sam Curran who steadied the ship for a bit with a partnership of 38 runs before the latter was dismissed after playing a few lusty blows. Raza then changed gears and took the innings forward along with Shashank Singh but he too perished trying to up the ante. Jitesh Sharma came in a scored a quick-fire 19 off just 11 balls to keep their hopes alive. The match-winning duo from the last game, Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank got together and almost pulled off a thrilling win here with the former scoring 33 of just 15, and the latter smashing 46 off 25. They needed 29 runs in the last over but ended up falling short by a couple of runs.

HYDERABAD WINS A NAIL-BITER HERE! It became too close for comfort in the last over but they only have themselves to blame as they put three catches down with two of those going for maximums. Otherwise, they would have got over the line comfortably. Punjab will be disappointed but that same duo of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma got them real close to the two points, but in the end, it just wasn't meant to be as they fell short by just two runs.

Commentary

We are back for the all-important chase to begin! The two umpires stroll out to the middle, and the two Punjab openers Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan also walk to the 22 yards.

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, Punjab have a challenging total to chase but they do possess a strong batting unit that can go bonkers from the get-go, but the onus is on how the openers initiate this chase. They also have a good record of chasing down high totals but surely, Hyderabad's well-oiled bowling attack won't make their task easy at all. A riveting run-chase coming up shortly. Stay tuned!

Arshdeep Singh is up for a quick chat for his phenomenal bowling spell (4-0-29-4). He says that at the start there was some movement and the ball was swinging but towards the end dew came in and the pitch settled in. Adds that he was happy till the third over but overall it was a good performance. Mentions that hitting square on this wicket is tougher than hitting straight and that is why they used the wide yorkers and slower ones to make the batter work hard for their shots.

Punjab made a perfect start with the ball, reaping the rewards of their decision to bowl first. The bowlers, particularly Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada, executed their plans effectively, causing the ball to deviate and move sharply away from the batsmen. Arshdeep struck early, dismissing two key Hyderabad batters in the same over, setting the tone for Punjab's dominance. Sam Curran further added to Hyderabad's woes by removing the in-form Abhishek Sharma. Harshal Patel, in his second spell, also made an impact by claiming a couple of wickets and silenced his critics. However, a costly over from Harpreet Brar, conceding 22 runs, provided an opening for the opposition to capitalize on. Following a few challenging overs, Arshdeep Singh once again showcased his experience and skill by delivering two crucial breakthroughs in the same over, dismissing the two set batters, and ensuring Punjab maintained control over the game. He finished his spell by taking an excellent four-wicket haul. However, they didn't conclude the innings well and also made several fielding errors by dropping easy catches that might prove costly at the end.

Despite Hyderabad stuttering at intervals, they have managed to post a challenging total of 182 runs on the board as they dominated the mid-overs phase fetching 81 off those six overs, and getting 25 off the last couple of overs. Hyderabad encountered their first major struggle within the Powerplay of the tournament when they lost both Travis Head and Aiden Markram in a single over. Despite a shaky start, Abhishek Sharma showed signs of picking up momentum with a couple of boundaries, only to be dismissed sooner, leading to Hyderabad's worst batting performance during the Powerplays in this edition, with three wickets down. With Rahul Tripathi also succumbing to the pressure and departing for a low score, Hyderabad found themselves in a precarious position. However, against all odds, Nitish Kumar Reddy emerged as a savior, as he got into the scheme of things and played an outstanding inning of 64 runs, while Abdul Samad equally contributed with a cameo of 25 runs, reviving Hyderabad's hopes. Both departed in the 17th over, but helped Hyderabad with a decent but recoverable total.

WIDE! Another extra delivery! A close call though! Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls it right on the tramline on a fuller length, Shashank Singh leaves it. Heinrich Klaasen believes that it is a fair delivery and Hyderabad go upstairs to review it. The split-screen clearly shows that the ball has passed beyond the tramline. OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Jaydev Unadkat gets a wicket now! The break in play works in favour of the fielding side once again. This is a slower one, full and around off, Sikandar Raza moves across and tries to scoop but fails to generate power on the shot, the ball lobs up off the upper half of the bat in the air wide of the keeper, Heinrich Klaasen runs to his left and takes a comfortable catch. The dangerous-looking Raza goes back now and Punjab slips further! Hyderabad, overall have been absolutely fabulous in the fielding department, unlike their rivals.

Strategic Break! Despite of stumbling initially, Punjab's innings have found stability as Sikandar Raza and Shashank Singh have put on a strong resilient stand of 33 runs. Although they still require 92 off the last 42 deliveries, we have witnessed these asking rates barely matter when any one of the batters puts on a show. With Shashank Singh out in the middle and a couple of hitters yet to bat, Punjab will be surely fancying their chances here by taking calculated risks of being aggressive. Whereas Hyderabad will be aiming to get a couple of wickets to call it a game.

However, they will also have to keep an eye on the asking rate.

Says that they are pretty happy with how things have gone for them so far, and adds they are lucky to have won a couple of crunch games. Meanwhile, Hyderabad, renowned for its explosive overseas contingent, is brimming with confidence after defeating the defending champions Chennai convincingly. With T Natarajan back in the eleven, their bowling lineup featuring Pat Cummins, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Jaydev Unadkat appears formidable. In batting, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head have been consistent at the top, providing a strong foundation that is reflected in their Powerplay run rate numbers so far. Especially Abhishek, who scored runs with ease against Chennai and the reason Hyderabad flies off at 10s an over. Aiden Markram has displayed solidity, and Heinrich Klaasen offers stability in challenging situations with his thunderous striking ability. Pat Cummins has been absolutely spot-on with his captaincy as well. Overall, Hyderabad looks well-drilled and possesses the ability to attack fiercely.

In a nail-biting contest, Punjab orchestrated an extraordinary comeback against Gujarat. When the seasoned campaigners stumbled, it was the emerging talents who seized the spotlight, propelling them to an improbable victory. Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma's electrifying displays in the dying moments engineered a sensational chase of the daunting 200-run target, securing victory in a spellbinding fashion. Coming into this contest, they do have the home advantage but would want their bowlers to contain the opposition batters as this season, Punjab has conceded around 200 runs twice while bowling first, and their economy rate in the slog overs is one of the worst in this competition. Harshal Patel is yet to perform to his best. Kagiso Rabada has been slightly expensive but he has ensured to pick wickets at intervals. While Sam Curran has delivered on all fronts, Punjab would want to secure a win at their home ground and gain those two crucial points as well.

Hello and a very warm welcome to our coverage of Match number 23 between Punjab and Hyderabad. Punjab are back to their new home venue at Mullanpur and this clash promises nothing less than pure entertainment. Both sides are coming off victories in their recent clashes and are currently stacked at the center of the points table with equal wins and defeats.

... MATCH DAY ...

Match 23 of the 2024 Indian T20 League is upon us and it is Punjab taking on Hyderabad in Mullanpur, Punjab's new home where they played their opening fixture of the campaign and ended up winning it as well against Delhi. Punjab and Hyderabad are two sides that come into this match on the back of a win and that too against quality opponents. Punjab picked up a sensational win against Gujarat in their previous game and chased down a target of 200 runs in dramatic fashion in the final over. They also had a couple of unlikely heroes that night in the form of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma who played a couple of stellar knocks in the final overs and took their side to victory and the former was almost not even picked up in the 2024 auction. Apart from these two, Prabhsimran Singh showed some fight but the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Jitesh Sharma need to contribute more if Punjab are to have regular success. On the bowling front, Harpreet Brar has taken up the role of the lead spinner and has been pretty solid thus far and so has Arshdeep Singh with his left-arm pace. Kagiso Rabada has been a touch expensive just like in recent times but the positive thing is that he is picking up wickets. However, that isn't the case for marquee buy Harshal Patel who has been hit and miss and has gone for plenty of runs as well. Punjab do have the talent in their ranks but require a bit more consistency and they still don't quite have a settled XI. On the other hand, Hyderabad also picked up a stellar win against reigning champions Chennai, an opponent against whom they have suffered more often than not and hence, that victory was even sweeter. Abhishek Sharma has been a class act thus far and whether he opens the innings or bats at number 3, he just seems to be hitting the ball so cleanly. Aiden Markram also returned to form with a classy half-century in the last game and then the likes of Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen are there to provide the big hits. They do need more from their Indian batting contingent but do look like a fairly solid side. Also, a big positive in the last game was Bhuvneshwar Kumar getting back into the wickets and he was well-supported by skipper Pat Cummins. They do however need to do a lot of work in the spin department as Mayank Markande hasn't been able to replicate the season he had last time around and Shahbaz Ahmed has been used more as a pinch-hitter than a regular spinner. Both teams have 2 wins from 4 games and with a few teams steering ahead of others, these two teams in the middle of the table will look to keep pace with the likes of Rajasthan and Lucknow with a win but only one will be able to do that. Who are you backing to get the win?
