Commentary

Right then, that's all from the series opener. What a start to the series we have had, with the West Indies drawing the first blood in this three-match ODI series in an emphatic fashion. On the other hand, England would have taken a lot of positives from this defeat and will hope to bounce back stronger as they aim to level the series. The second ODI will take place at the same venue on Wednesday, the 6th of December. The first ball will be bowled at 11.00 pm IST (5.30 pm GMT). As always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

The captain of the West Indies, Shai Hope is the Player of the Match for his stellar ton. He says that he only plays to win for his team. He adds that he backs himself in any position and it was great to see the team chase down this target. He appreciates Romario Shepherd for his knock as well. On their bowling, he mentions that he thought bringing the spinner in could reward them with a few wickets and those are key moments in the game. He credits the young openers with setting the tone and mentions that they are both quality players

England's skipper, Jos Buttler says that it was a fantastic game of cricket and credits Hope and adds that there's a lot to discuss in the dressing room. He mentions that they batted brilliantly and scored a good amount of runs. About his form, he says that it will come back. He also appreciates Romario Shepherd for his power-hitting and Rehan Ahmed for his sharp bowling.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, it was England skipper Jos Buttler who won the flip of the coin and opted to put runs on the board. Will Jacks and Phil Salt came out all guns blazing to lay a solid foundation for the innings. Zak Crawley and Harry Brook then got together to stitch a 71-run stand to steady the ship. Crawley could not quite make the West Indies pay for the two dropped chances, but Brook took the inning forward. Despite the fall of wickets at the other end, he carried on his merry way before perishing on 71. Thanks to lower-order contributions from Sam Curran and Brydon Carse, England recovered from 239–7 and got to 325. Gudakesh Motie was the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies, with figures of 2 for 49 from his 10 overs.

As for England, Sam Curran and Gus Atkinson got the new ball to swing, but neither of them was able to set the tone early by picking up wickets. Brought on as the first change, Brydon Carse, too, was not able to have any impact in his first spell. It was spin that did the trick for England as Rehan Ahmed and Liam Livingstone got rid of the openers to put their side back in pole position. In the middle phase, England kept striking at timely intervals and did not allow the West Indies to form big partnerships. Having got rid of Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford in successive overs, England had their tails up at the moment and with the required rate climbing up, the visitors had the upper hand on the game. However, as Romario Shepherd began to flex his muscles, the England bowlers lost their way and just were not able to nail their lines and lengths. Even though they were able to see the back of Romario Shepherd, it was nothing but a consolation for the visitors.

In pursuit of 326, it was an excellent start from the two West Indies openers, Alick Athanaze and Brandon King, with a 104-run stand. Athanaze looked assured on his way to his second ODI fifty, while King began shakily, but he too grew in confidence as the innings progressed. Like England, the departure of two openers put the West Indies in a spot of bother. Keacy Carty and Shimron Hetmyer could not convert their starts, leaving Hope with all to do. Coming in at number 7, Romario Shepherd took the mantle of providing impetus to the innings, with Hope happy to play the second fiddle. The lanky all-rounder produced a quickfire 49-run cameo off 28 balls and took the pressure off Hope. The duo stitched an 89-run stand for the sixth wicket which swung the momentum completely in West Indies's favour. Even though Shepherd could not finish things off, Hope changed his gears in a flash and sealed the deal with 3 sixes off the last 4 balls. This was Hope's 16th ODI century but the fastest of his career off 82 balls.

Shai 'Hope' springs eternal for the West Indies in this run-fest classic! With 326 never being chased at this venue, the West Indies needed something special to get over the line, and it was their skipper Shai Hope who stepped up to get the job done. West Indies pull off their highest-ever chase on home soil to go 1-0 up in the series. As for England, they held the upper hand for most parts of the game but just could not hold their nerves in crunch moments and had no answers to the brilliance of Shai Hope.

SIX! JUST WOW! Shai Hope has given their home fans a match to remember. Sam Curran has bowled really poorly and that is ridiculous hitting from the skipper, Hope. He has provided a ray of 'Hope' for the fans. He muscled this short ball towards deep mid-wicket for a maximum to deal the finishing blow. West Indies win from the clutches of losing and it is because of Shai Hope.

Commentary

All in readiness for the game to begin as the two umpires make their way out to the middle.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then that was an entertaining first innings but that is just the half. The other half will begin when the hosts try to chase down the target while the visitors give it their all to defend it. Do you think West Indies will be able to chase down 326 on the board? We will find out soon.

Harry Brook is in for a chat. He says that he had to give himself time out there. Shares that the surface is a little bit tough and slow at times. Mentions that the batting was tough in the middle phase. States that they have been practicing the sweep shot over the last couple of days during their practice session. Further adds that they did not quite know what the surface was going to be like. Feels that it is nice to be here after a poor World Cup. Reckons that 325 is a good total and they should be good if they change it up with the ball.

The West Indies bowlers will be happy about their comeback after the first 10 overs. Gudakesh Motie and Alzarri Joseph managed to stop the destructive opening pair and after that, the other bowlers showcased their skills and took some timely wickets. Romario Shepherd struck at a very crucial time right when Harry Brook had decided to be aggressive along with Liam Livingstone. Shepherd dismissed both of them putting his team back in the game. They will need to work on their death bowling but the way their bowlers worked as a unit in the middle phase was commendable. They ended up bowling out the Englishmen. Gudakesh Motie was the pick of the bowlers as he bowled economically and took a couple of wickets as well.

England had a great start thanks to the explosive batting by Phil Salt and Will Jacks. However, after their dismissal, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett could not build a good partnership. Harry played a heroic and sensible innings to bring his team back into the game. Jos Buttler struggled a lot out in the middle and he will look to regain his form as soon as possible. However, Brook’s cautious batting kept the scoreboard running and along with the help of Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Brydon Carse they managed to cross over the 300-run mark. At the end of the innings and after losing all their wickets, England en up with 325 runs in the bag.

What an eventful first innings it was. Maybe that was the trailer of the action we will get to see going further in this match and the series. England had a strong start but the middle phase of the innings was dominated by the hosts. A few timely wickets put them back in the game. However, the Englishmen have managed to power themselves to 325.

We are done with the national anthems and it is now time for the action to get underway. Blue skies greet the two umpires as they make their way out to the middle. Shai Hope doing the talking in the West Indies huddle before they disperse to take their respective field positions. Out walk the two England openers, Phil Salt and Will Jacks. Alzarri Joseph will start with the new ball for the West Indies. Two slips in place. Here we go...

We are moments away from the start of the first ODI, but before that, the two teams and match officials will line up for the national anthems. It will be the national anthem of Antigua and Barbuda first followed by the national anthem of England and then the West Indies.

PITCH REPORT - Nikhil Uttamchandani is pitchside. He says that the dimensions are pretty equal on all sides and that the average first innings score is around 240. It is a new pitch and it will be a little uncertain in nature. Samuel Badree joins him and says that there are patches of bounce in critical areas. He mentions that it is a hard surface and as the ball gets older the viewers will get to see some runs.

West Indies skipper, Shai Hope says that they were looking to bowl first. Mentions that it is a decent and fresh wicket. Further adds that there will be some early moisture which should help them. Feels that it is important to take every game and series as they came. Shares that every game has points to play for. Informs that they are going with two spinners and Sherfane Rutherford will be making his ODI debut.

The captain of England, Jos Buttler says that they will bat first and he mentions that it is a pretty good wicket to make full use of their batting strength. He adds that he has a lot of talent in the group and this series will give exposure to the young guys and they should have fun. Informs that Ollie Pope, John Turner, Matthew Potts and Tom Hartley are the ones missing out in this game.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (C/WK), Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Brydon Carse, Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King, Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty, Shai Hope (C/WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford (On ODI debut), Romario Shepherd, Yannic Cariah, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Oshane Thomas.

TOSS - The coin toss lands in the favour of Jos Buttler and England have opted to BAT first.

On the other hand, England are coming into this series after a disappointing World Cup campaign. Jos Buttler will want to win the series and get back to winning ways with his team. Gus Atkinson, Liam Livingstone, and Sam Curran will carry high expectations coming into this series. This is a comparatively young squad to be led by the veteran skipper. ... MATCH DAY ...

Embarking on a Caribbean tour following a lackluster ODI World Cup, England finds themselves at a crucial juncture, set to clash with West Indies in a three-match ODI series. Despite recent setbacks, the England and Wales Cricket Board places its trust in Jos Buttler's leadership, designating him to lead a squad notably lacking key players like Joe Root, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Mark Wood, and Ben Stokes. This creates an opportunity for a young and untested ensemble to step up and showcase their potential on the international stage. The batting lineup features the reliable Test opening partnership of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, with the responsibility to provide strong starts. The middle order, comprising Harry Brook, Phil Salt, and skipper Jos Buttler, forms a formidable core. Supporting them are emerging talents like Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse, complemented by the experience of Sam Curran. Rehan Ahmed takes on the crucial role of the leading spinner, adding balance to the squad. West Indies, on the other hand, grapples with the disappointment of not qualifying for the recent World Cup. Shai Hope assumes leadership responsibilities, leading a squad that includes uncapped players Sherfane Rutherford and Matthew Forde. The return of opener Kjorn Ottley marks a notable inclusion, but the absence of Shane Dowrich, who announced his immediate retirement, is a significant development. The batting order heavily relies on the trio of Brandon King, Alick Athanaze, and Shimron Hetmyer to shoulder the run-scoring responsibilities. The pace attack will be led by Alzarri Joseph, a potent force in home conditions, with support from Oshane Thomas and Romario Shepherd. In the spin department, Yannic Cariah is expected to play a key role. As these cricketing powerhouses prepare to lock horns, historical head-to-head records favour England, but the absence of key players introduces an element of unpredictability. Weather forecasts hint at the possibility of rain and overcast conditions, adding further intrigue to the series. The anticipation is palpable as fans await the outcome of this closely watched contest. The question that resonates is who will seize an early lead in this highly anticipated ODI series between England and West Indies? The answer unfolds soon on the Caribbean cricketing stage, promising an enthralling battle between bat and ball.
