Commentary

Right then, that's all from the second ODI. A clinical effort with both bat and ball has helped England force a series decider. On the other hand, West Indies could not quite back up their performance in the first ODI. The caravan now shifts to Kensington Oval in Barbados for the third and final ODI that will be played on Saturday, the 9th of December. The first ball will be bowled at 11.00 pm IST (5.30 pm GMT). As always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

England's captain, Jos Buttler says it was great to spend some time in the middle and stay not out, making sure he took the team over the line. He adds up saying how important Sam Curran is to the side and how crucial those three wickets at the start of the innings were to the team. He concludes by saying he is mighty pleased by the win and looks forward to the next game in Barbados.

West Indies' skipper Shai Hope says that they did not start well with the bat in the first 10 overs, they did have one good partnership but after that, they were not able to convert it to a huge total. He adds that they will look to regroup as a batting side and look to do better in the final game. He mentions that it was challenging for the spinners under light with the due coming in but they did their best. Finishes by acknowledging that the series is level now and they will look forward to the final decider game.

Sam Curran is the Player of the Match for his brilliance with the ball. He took 3 for 33 from his 7 overs. He says it has been a pleasing performance after his outing in the last game. He adds by saying that there was not a lot of swing on offer so he had to change the angles and use the strong winds to his advantage. He further concludes that the pitch was tricky and the way England executed their plans was overwhelming.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, it were the English bowlers who vindicated their skipper's decision to bowl first with a clinical effort. Inserted into bat, West Indies were rocked early as they lost four wickets inside the first Powerplay. Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford then got together and began a rescue act for the West Indies. The duo soaked up the pressure well and forged a solid recovery with a 128-run stand. However, once this partnership was broken, it all went downhill for West Indies as they lost their last five wickets for 50 runs to be bowled out for 202. Hope's 68 and Rutherford's 63 were the only positives in their batting effort for the hosts. Fresh off a forgettable outing with the ball in the series opener, Sam Curran redeemed himself by accounting for 3 of the 4 wickets in the Powerplay. Liam Livingstone broke the back of the West Indies batting unit with three wickets in the middle phase, while Rehan Ahmed and Gus Atkinson took each as well.

With not a big total to defend, the West Indies needed early breakthroughs with the new ball. Their hopes pinged on Alzarri Joseph and Romario Shepherd, but the duo were put under pressure by the English openers. Shepherd was the first to break through for the West Indies before Gudakesh Motie's twin strikes gave the West Indies an opening. The introduction of Motie helped West Indies put a squeeze on the runs which allowed them to mount the pressure. The move to continue with Sherfane Rutherford paid off for Shai Hope and the West Indies as the all-rounder removed the dangerous-looking Will Jacks. At that stage, the West Indies sensed an opening, but the gritty 90-run stand between Harry Brook and Jos Buttler just took the game away from them.

As they did in the series opener, Will Jacks and Phil Salt got England off to a flier once again. Jacks continued from where he left off in the last game, while Salt was also not too behind in setting the tempo. Even though Jacks brought up his second ODI fifty, the fall of wickets at the other end hampered his momentum. He got out on 73, which put England in a bit of a bother. Harry Brook then joined hands with Jos Buttler and calmed the nerves in the dressing room. The duo were happy to nurdle it around but, at the same time, showed no mercy to the loose deliveries. Buttler was the aggressor of the two batters, and his streak of low scores finally came to an end as he registered an unbeaten 58-run knock to take his side home. On his way to his fifty, Buttler also became the 5th English batter to get to 5000 ODI runs. Not to forget the contribution from Harry Brook, who showed good application and remained unbeaten on 43.

The series is well and truly alive! An emphatic victory for England as they chase it down with 103 balls to spare and 6 wickets in hand. After a tough defeat in the series opener, England have taken their game up a notch to draw level in the series. As far as West Indies are concerned, they were let down by their batters and even though the bowling unit put up a fight, it was just not enough on the day.

Commentary

We are back! England to start their innings chasing 203 in 50 overs. Phil Salt and Will Jacks are the opening batters for England. Alzarri Joseph to start the attack for West Indies. We are underway as the Umpire says Let's play!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

England's bowling unit, particularly Sam Curran, redeemed themselves after a challenging first ODI. With the new ball, Curran's three wickets added a crucial dent to West Indies' innings. Gus Atkinson complemented the attack with two important wickets. As England prepares to embark on their chase, requiring 203 runs in 50 overs, the stage is set for a riveting second innings. Will England navigate the challenge with ease, or are we in for another nail-biting encounter? The answer awaits as the players take their positions for the second half of this enthralling battle.

Liam Livingstone is in for a chat. He says that it is quite a nice wicket to bowl. Mentions that it was nice to get a few wickets and help the team. Shares that Shai Hope has been playing well for a couple of years and it was nice to get him out. States that Rehan Ahmed has done well while Jacks is a capable bowler. Ends by saying that it is good for Jos Buttler to have these options.

West Indies batting display had a rocky start, losing four wickets for just 42 runs within the first 10 overs. However, a resilient partnership emerged between skipper Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford, crafting a vital 100-run stand for the 5th wicket. The equilibrium was disrupted when Rutherford departed at 63, and despite Hope's valiant effort with a captain's innings of 68, the Windies faced a rapid collapse. England's bowlers capitalized on the situation, with Sam Curran leading the charge by claiming three significant wickets with the new ball. Gus Atkinson added to the pressure with two wickets, while spinners Liam Livingstone and Rehan Ahmed orchestrated crucial breakthroughs, ensuring West Indies fell short of a formidable total.

The curtains fall on the first innings at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, setting the stage for an intriguing second ODI between West Indies and England. Upon winning the toss, England's skipper opted to field, a decision that reaped rewards as West Indies concluded their innings at 202, losing all their wickets in 39.4 overs. The spotlight now shifts to England, tasked with chasing down the target of 203 in their allotted 50 overs.

39.4W

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Gus Atkinson finally gets his reward! Alzarri Joseph falls prey to the short ball! Bends his back and bangs it into the deck, Alzarri Joseph continues to attempt the pull but this time he skies it high in the air but only as far as the non-striker. Gus Atkinson calls for the catch and settles under it nice and early before pouncing it with ease. West Indies have been bowled out for 202!

39.30

Short again, over middle, Alzarri Joseph pulls it along the ground to deep square leg and refuses the single.

39.20

Slower and back of a length, around off, Alzarri Joseph swings and misses.

39.12

In the air...but safe! Jos Buttler almost pulled off a stunner there! Gus Atkinson digs it in short, at the batter, Alzarri Joseph goes for the pull but the ball gets big on him. He skies it high in the air behind the keeper as Jos Buttler gives the chase while running backwards. He puts in a dive but the ball drops out of his reach. Two runs taken.

Gus Atkinson calls for the catch and settles under it nice and early before pouncing it with ease. West Indies have been bowled out for 202!

PITCH REPORT - Ian Bishop is near the deck. He starts by informing that a fresh surface will be used for this game. Mentions that the boundary dimensions are equidistant. With the wind blowing across, he feels that wind will be a factor. Stacy-Ann King joins him and says that there is a lot more live grass on this surface compared to the one used in the last game. She reckons that there will be variable bounce in this game as well. States that spinners will be happy bowling on this surface and they will have an important role to play. Further adds that for batters, it will be about application and spending time in the middle. Ends by saying that there might be movement for the pacers under lights.

Shai Hope, the skipper of West Indies says that he would have bowled first as well as the wicket won't change much during the course of the game. Informs that they have made no changes to the team since the last game. Adds that they will have to adapt early as they are batting first and setting a target. Reckons that the conditions have changed a lot since the last game and it will all be about who adapts better today.

England's skipper, Jos Buttler says that they will bowl first. Mentions that they are keen on learning from that performance and making sure they bring the absolute best out of this new team they have. He adds by saying that the wind will play a huge factor and the teams will have to execute plans keeping that in mind. Ends by informing that they are going in with the same team.

England (Unchanged Playing XI) - Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (C/WK), Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Brydon Carse, Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson.

West Indies (Unchanged Playing XI) - Brandon King, Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty, Shai Hope (C/WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Yannic Cariah, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Oshane Thomas.

TOSS - England have won the coin toss and they have elected to BOWL first.

The West Indies, buoyed by their triumph in the first encounter, aims to consolidate their standing in ODI cricket. The thrilling chase and dominant batting performance marked by Shai Hope's heroics have infused confidence into the Caribbean camp. The trio of Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, and Oshane Thomas showcased exceptional bowling prowess, securing crucial wickets against the English batters. The stage is set, the players are primed, and cricket enthusiasts are in for a treat as the battle unfolds at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. Stay tuned with us for all the live updates on the toss and lineups, coming soon.

In the inaugural match, West Indies showcased their prowess with a remarkable chase of 326 runs, orchestrated by the dynamic Shai Hope's unbeaten century, a stellar 109 off just 83 balls. England, however, faced challenges beyond their batting, particularly in the death bowling department. The English bowlers struggled to contain the Windies' onslaught, with Sam Curran conceding 98 runs in 9.5 overs. While Gus Atkinson and the young sensation Rehan Ahmed displayed promise with two wickets each, the overall English side seemed rusty. Captain Jos Buttler shoulders the responsibility of navigating his team from the depths, and this game will serve as a litmus test for his leadership.

A hearty welcome to all cricket enthusiasts as we gather at the iconic Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, for the much-anticipated 2nd One Day International between West Indies and England. The stage is set for a riveting clash under the Caribbean sky, where the weather promises ideal conditions for an exhilarating game of cricket. West Indies, riding high on the euphoria of their sensational victory in the first ODI, stand on the precipice of sealing the series. On the flip side, England, eager to shake off the World Cup echoes, see this encounter as a must-win to level the series 1-1 and keep their hopes alive.

... MATCH DAY ...

In a highly anticipated clash at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, West Indies are set to face off against England in the second One Day International of the series. The venue, known for its slightly slower track, provides a challenge for the batters while favoring bowlers with its average first innings score of 227 and 195 for chasing. The game's dynamics emphasize bowlers' control, urging batters to navigate the pace and bounce thoughtfully. Following a resounding victory in the first match, the West Indies are riding high, looking to solidify their standing in ODI cricket after missing out on the World Cup. England, having faced disappointment in the World Cup and a lackluster start to this series, aims for redemption and improved performances. In the previous encounter, England set a formidable target of 326 for the West Indies, seemingly in control during the initial phases. However, the Windies' bowlers, led by Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, and Oshane Thomas, rallied to secure crucial wickets, halting England's momentum.
