Right then, that is it from yet another fantastic game in the Indian T20 League where Rajashtan came out on top and registered their third win of the season. However, the action in the league continues on the 13th of April, Thursday when Punjab take on Gujarat at the PCA Stadium. The first ball will be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can join us early for all the build-up. Until then, goodbye and cheers!

Ravichandran Ashwin is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his all-round brilliance. On his promotion with the bat, he jokingly says that he surprised people. Adds that is a role given to him and they even lost Sanju Samson. Mentions that he needs a few balls to get going and is better at judging his strengths. Shares that in every inning, he is padded up from the start. Mentions that he came into this competition from a good Test form and adds that he can get a good drop on the ball. On his variations, he says that had he not been able to do it in the last two years, he would not have been able to do it now. Ends by saying that success or failure should be on his terms.

Sanju Samson, the winning skipper of Rajasthan says that the credit definitely goes to the boys for this win. Adds that everyone chipped in and they really wanted to win this game as they have only won one game at this stadium and wanted to create a happy memory. Mentions that no total is safe when you have MS Dhoni out there and praises his Rajasthan boys to keep their nerves in the end. Tells that the pitch looked a bit slow, and that is why they picked Zampa as the Impact Player. Says that he does a lot of research and looks at data to make decisions and jokingly says that even though he played two balls it feels like he has scored a hundred as it is an exhausting task to continuously think about the game plans. Ends by saying that no data works on Dhoni and they have to respect him for what he has done over the years.

Presentation Time...

Yuzvendra Chahal and Sandeep Sharma have a few words to share with us. Sandeep Sharma says that his plan was to execute the yorkers and he was bowling them well in the nets. Adds that the leg side was big and he missed the yorkers twice and both went for six. Shares that plan to Ravindra Jadeja was to take the ball out of his reach while against MS Dhoni, he went 'round the wicket and changed the angle. Yuzvendra Chahal says that the wicket was gripping a bit and he tried to vary his pace. Shares that it is his second season with Ashwin and has good bonding with him. On Adam Zampa, Chahal replies that he has done well for Australia and had shared with him which lengths to bowl. Shares that winning close games is crucial and Sandeep Sharma backed his strengths which was important.

MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai is up for a chat. He starts by saying that they needed a bit more strike rotation during the middle overs. Adds that there was help for the spinners but not too much and their batters could have rotated the strike more. Shares that batting was not that difficult and feels that ownership should come from the batters. Mentions that it was good that they could reach within touching distance considering that they were the last batting pair. Reckons that it is important to see what the field is and what the bowler is trying to do and wait for the bowler to commit a mistake. Shares that there was a bit of dew and once the ball went into the outfield, it did become easier for the batters. Also says that he is happy with the way the bowlers bowled. On his 200th Indian T20 League game as Chennai captain, MS says that he did not know and milestones do not really matter to him. Ends by saying all it matters to him are the performance and results.

Earlier in the game, Rajasthan posted a fighting total thanks to a brilliant fifty from Jos Buttler and good contributions from Devdutt Padikkal, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shimron Hetmyer. They would have liked to get a few more runs, but they lost their way in the middle overs and struggled against the spin attack of Chennai. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for the home team with his two wickets and only conceded 21 runs. Akash Singh and Tushar Deshpande picked up a couple of wickets each while Moeen Ali got one to his name. While chasing, Chennai were in a good position, but they too lost their way in the middle and played too many dot balls which ultimately cost them in the end.

Rajasthan were excellent with the ball and they will be happy with their effort. Sandeep Sharma was able to send Ruturaj Gaikwad back early, but they couldn't build on that. However, in the middle overs, their spinners stepped up big time and picked up three wickets in no time to shift the momentum back towards them. The trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Adam Zampa picked up five wickets among them. In the last two overs, the game almost went away from them but they managed to get over the line. Sharma was the hero for them as after getting hit for two sixes in the last over, he executed the last three balls perfectly to earn a hard-fought win for Rajasthan.

Chennai did not get the start they would have hoped for as they lost in-form Ruturaj Gaikwad quite early. Ajinkya Rahane and Devon Conway did well to counter-attack and used the Powerplay well and added 68 runs together to set up a nice base. The plan of sending Shivam Dube up the order failed miserably which put pressure on Conway as he kept losing partners at the other end and eventually got out after scoring his half-century. They went from 92-3 to 113-6 which put them on the back foot. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja tried their absolute best and took the chase deep with some amazing power-hitting, especially from the skipper, but in the end, they fell short by just three runs.

What a game of cricket! We have witnessed another thrilling contest in the Indian T20 League and in the end, it was Sandeep Sharma who kept his calm to take Rajasthan over the line. This was a game that swung both ways and we got another last-ball finish. It was set up perfectly for MS Dhoni to mark his 200th game as the captain of Chennai as they needed 5 runs off the last ball, but you can't always get that happy ending. Kudos to Sandeep Sharma, one can only imagine the kind of pressure he was under with a batter of the reputation of MSD in front and the entire crowd behind him. It was indeed a special effort.

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The umpires and players make their way out to the middle. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway will open the innings for Chennai. Sandeep Sharma will start with the new ball for Rajasthan. Off we go...

...  THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Chennai will feel that they are slightly ahead in the game but this chase could well turn out to be a tricky one considering the nature of the wicket. On the other hand, Rajasthan would have liked a few runs more but they have good spinners in their ranks to dismantle the Chennai batting unit. Can Rajasthan defend this total and climb to the top of the standings? We shall find out shortly. Back in a bit for the chase...

Jos Buttler is in for a chat. He says that the pitch was really good at the start, but it slowed down. Adds that it is important to take advantage of the Powerplay but they lost a few early wickets so he decided to take the game deeper. Praises Jadeja and tells that he bowls very quick and when it turns it is hard to play him. Mentions that they have Ashwin, Chahal and Zampa who are outstanding spinners and this wicket looks like would help them.

The Chennai bowlers have vindicated their skipper's decision of bowling first and how. As he did against Mumbai, Tushar Deshpande struck early for Chennai once again, accounting for Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, they were unable to keep the pressure on the opposition batters and leaked a lot of runs in the Powerplay. Moreover, the errors in the field did not help their cause either. MS Dhoni persisted with the ever-reliant Ravindra Jadeja and that paid dividends for them. The latter struck twice in his second over and turned the game on its head. He could have had a third wicket in that over had Moeen Ali managed to hang onto the catch at first slip. The rest of the bowlers came to the party and helped keep the runs in check throughout the innings.

This has been a clinical bowling performance by Chennai and they have done well to keep Rajasthan under 180. After the visitors were put in to bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal got going straightaway with a couple of crisp boundaries. After his departure, Devdutt Padikkal joined Jos Buttler in the middle and got Rajasthan off to a swift start. Both batters found boundaries at will which allowed the visitors to race to 86 inside 8 overs. At that stage, Rajasthan were motoring along and were on course to post a huge total. However, losing two wickets in the 9th over pegged them back. Ravichandran Ashwin was promoted up the order and struggled for timing initially but struck a few lusty blows before being dismissed. Jos Buttler lost momentum during this partnership and followed Ashwin back into the hut soon after. Towards the end, Shimron Hetmyer played a quickfire cameo of 30 runs from 18 balls to take Rajasthan to a challenging total.

OUT! RUN OUT! A strange end to the innings! Tushar Deshpande serves this full and on off, Adam Zampa shuffles across to scoop, but mistimes it in the air towards short fine leg where Maheesh Theekshana drops a sitter, and the batters turn around for the second run. However, Theekshana quickly picks up and throws at the keeper's end where MS Dhoni gathers it and throws at the stumps to break it with Zamap not even in the frame. Rajasthan finish on 175/8!

Rajasthan's Impact Player Adam Zampa comes out to bat and will face the final delivery of the innings. Zampa comes in place of Jos Buttler.

19.5W

OUT! TAKEN! Tushar Deshpande strikes again and this turning out to be a great over for Chennai. This is another slower delivery, full and on middle, Jason Holder sets himself for the slog, but goes through it early and mistimes it in the air as the ball goes towards deep mid-wicket where Devon Conway takes a good catch. Holder holes out for none!

19.41

Another slower one, full and on off, Shimron Hetmyer mistimes his drive through covers for a single.

19.30

Swing and a miss! Tushar Deshpande bowls the slower delivery, full and outside off, Shimron Hetmyer swings wildly across the line, but is through his shot early and fails to connect. He goes for the reveiw as he thinks it is a wide, but the replays shows it is a fair delivery.

19.22

Short of a length and on off, Shimron Hetmyer pulls it towards deep mid-wicket and comes back for the second.

19.14

FOUR! Powered away! This is full and on middle, Shimron Hetmyer stays there and smahses it over the bowler's head for a boundary.

Jason Holder is the new man in but it will be Shimron Hetmyer on strike. It will be Tushar Deshpande to bowl the final over.

OUT! TAKEN! Akash Singh gets another wicket! He loses his grip and bowls another high full toss, on off, Dhruv Jurel looks to go hard at it, but loses his shape and ends up slicing it up in the air towards long off where Shivam Dube comes forward and takes a good catch. Jurel is waiting to see if that was No Ball for height or not, but the replays shows that it is under the waist and the umpire signals Out. Rajasthan six down now!

Is that out? Dhruv Jurel has been caught at long off off a high full toss. The umpires have asked Jurel to wait as they check the height of the delivery. The replays show that the ball was below waist and the batter has to make his way back now.

18.46

SIX! Just over! Akash Singh now misses his yorker and bowls a high full toss, on off, Shimron Hetmyer slogs it towards the long on fence, but mistimes it. However, it has just enough powere to go over for a maximum.

As things stand, Chennai find themselves fifth in the standings with two wins out of three games. As they return home after a convincing win against Mumbai, they will look to make the occasion of MS Dhoni's 200th Indian T20 League game as the captain of Chennai memorable with a win tonight. They will heavily rely on their top three, which are Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ajinkya Rahane. The injury to Deepak Chahar comes as a massive blow to them, but Tushar Deshpande has been a revelation and will be expected to fill that void. In the spin department, Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner have been consistent, and the duo will hold the key at this venue.

The Indian T20 League, 2023 is certainly living up to expectations with edge-of-the-seat thrillers one after another, and this one promises to be another entertaining clash. Hello and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of Match 17 of the Indian T20 League, 2023, where Chennai will be hosting Rajasthan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

... MATCH DAY …

It is time for Match 17 in the Indian T20 League, and Chennai will host Rajasthan at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in what is a repeat of the final in the inaugural season in 2008. Both of them have won two of their three matches and will want to get their third win of the season. The last time Chennai played here, their batters were at the top of their game. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been in terrific form and doesn't look like stopping any time soon, while his opening partner, Devon Conway, has also supported him well. Their middle order is stacked with star players like Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, and MS Dhoni, who can take on any bowling attack. However, Stokes is yet to find his form, while Ali has contributed more with the ball till now. The pace department has been a bit inconsistent, which is a worry as Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande haven't been able to make an impact, while Sisanda Magala only made his debut in the last game. Also, Deepak Chahar suffered a hamstring injury in the last game and is set to be on the sidelines. The surprise package for them was Ajinkya Rahane, who absolutely blasted 61 off just 27 balls, which is unlike him as he likes to take his time. They have some exciting talents as well in Shivam Dube and Rajvardhan Hangargekar, which gives Dhoni plenty of options to build his team with different combinations. They will have a home-field advantage in this game and will want to use it to get a victory. Rajasthan, on the other hand, probably have the best batter in this format as Jos Buttler has started this season where he left off while Yashasvi Jaiswal is enjoying his best season so far, and both look very dangerous for any bowling unit. Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer have also played some good knocks, but other batters need to step up a bit. Dhruv Jurel came in as an Impact Player for them against Punjab and almost won the game. Their middle order needs to contribute more for them to be consistent. Their pace attack is strong with Trent Boult who always gives them a good start by picking up wickets in the Powerplay, while Jason Holder has been economical. The spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal has been hard to pick for the batters, and they will look to continue that in this game too. This match has all the ingredients for a thrilling contest, and we are surely in for a treat. Let's see who comes out on top.
