Commentary

Decider set for Lord's - It has been a gripping series so far, and with the scores level at 1-1, what better stage for the series finale than the Home of Cricket itself, Lord's. England will draw plenty of belief from both their bowling and batting show in this match and will look to double down on it to seal a home series win. India, on the other hand, were off colour with the bat and short of runs to defend with the ball, and will need to figure out where things went wrong if they want to bounce back and claim the series. The third and final ODI will be played on Sunday, 19th July, with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 10 am GMT (3.30 pm IST). But do join us early for the buildup as well. And for now, you can switch tabs to catch all the updates from the 3rd of the five ODIs between West Indies and New Zealand, in Guyana. Until then, cheers!

The victorious captain of England - Harry Brook describes it as a phenomenal effort from his bowlers to keep India to 233 after they looked well set for a much bigger total.  Shares that the decision to play an extra seamer was dictated by the conditions and felt it was the right call. On Joe Root, the England skipper is full of praise, calling him a phenomenal player and a great person to have around the group. Brook adds that Root has been one of the world's best for many years, particularly with the way he rotates the strike, which he believes is a vital skill in ODI cricket. Building towards the World Cup, Brook says the team will take it one day at a time and now turn their attention to the decider at Lord's.

The Indian captain - Shubman Gill says it is pretty disappointing to end up on the losing side. And when he is asked about the total they managed to post, he admits that 300-310 would have been a competitive score on this surface. Highlights that they were in a comfortable position to reach that figure after 25 overs, and points out that they lost a few too many wickets in the middle phase. On the collapse, he points out that the tailenders aren't the strongest batters, so a bit more was expected from the lower middle order. He hopes that next time around, the side builds proper partnerships and carries the innings forward from there. When asked about his own dismissal, he admits that it is never a good feeling when you ping one straight to cover. On missing Sundar, he calls him a key part of the team, noting the injury came while running between the wickets. Mentions that they had to lean on their main bowlers through the innings, though he doesn't feel it would have changed much since the ball was doing plenty for the quicks regardless. Still, he says, losing a player of that calibre forces a rethink in strategy, and he admits some momentum slipped away from India because of it. When asked about Root's batting display, he admits 234 was the target, so the required rate was never out of control. Details that had the asking rate hovering closer to five or six an over, India might have forced a false shot out of him, but at 4.5 an over, Root is a master of chasing down these kinds of totals.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - JOE ROOT receives the award for an outstanding and unbeaten knock of 99 runs. He says the most satisfying part was getting the job done in the end. He says personal milestones are never the priority and that he plays to help England win games. On the surface, Root says it was not the easiest pitch to bat on and credits England's bowlers for pegging India back after they looked set for a much bigger total. Adds that it allowed the batters to spend time at the crease and soak up the pressure. Believes that this England side should be judged on its recent performances rather than looking too far into the past, and says competing toe-to-toe with a strong Indian side is a good indicator of where the team stands.

... Time for the post-match Presentation ...

Root stayed rooted - Run rate was never really the issue for England, since they weren't chasing a mountain. The job was about nudging and nurdling ones and twos through the gaps in that middle phase while keeping wickets in hand. Root did exactly that without ever tiring, though he kept searching for support from the other end. Curran, Buttler and Jacks, all three got starts and formed important alliances with him, only to fall at inconvenient moments, but Root stayed true to the basics and showed that old-school ODI batting still has plenty of currency left in it. For India, Axar Patel bowled a tight, parsimonious spell throughout, but the wickets stayed elusive just when they were needed the most. Gurnoor did strike late, fishing out Jacks, but by then the game had drifted well beyond the visitors' reach.

Early dents through pace masterclass - At 8/2, both openers were back in the hut inside four overs, and England were made to huff and puff through some breathless and accurate new-ball bowling from Bumrah and Krishna. The wicket had a mind of its own, and while several body blows off the deviating ball tested their resolve, Brook and Root somewhat steadied the ship. Root played the patient hand, but Brook's flamethrowing approach eventually did him in, becoming the third name consumed by the heat of the Indian pace trio. England needed something solid after sliding to 53 for 3, but with Root firmly holding fort, one end at least looked secure.

Underwhelming with the bat - Slipping from 104/1 to 111/3 and then getting bundled from 178/3 to 233, India just didn't get the proper lift after a very positive start by the top order. Shubman Gill couldn't convert his start, but Rohit and Kohli didn't panic, building a steady 60-run stand that papered over the cracks until Rohit's exit reopened them. Iyer walked in next and picked up where Rohit left off, pairing with Kohli in a stand that produced two half-centuries and a sense of security. Then Harry Brook's bowlers took over the plot. Sam Curran and Will Jacks did the quiet work first, choking the boundaries and building the pressure. The knockout blow came when Archer and Saqib returned for their second spells and went hunting with the short ball, a plan executed with ruthless precision that ripped through the middle and lower order. Iyer kept the fight on and Bumrah threw in a spirited cameo, but once Iyer fell, the innings simply caved in, with India crashing to 233 all out and not even lasting their full overs.

England level up in style - Root stays stranded on 99, but it weighs far more than that figure with the way he played through and through. England get the equaliser in Cardiff, and with this win, they have snapped a six-match losing streak against India in ODIs, one that stretched all the way back to July 2022. India left six overs on the table with the bat, and that profligacy came back to bite them hard as England finished the job in almost the same time.

44.14

FOUR! Gus Atkinson hits the winning runs. England level the series and set up a decider at Lord's. Joe Root stays unbeaten on 99, but knowing the selfless cricketer he is, he will not mind one bit. Root breaks into a smile as he shares a warm embrace with Atkinson after guiding England home in yet another masterclass of a chase. Krishna bangs it in short, over middle. Atkinson is expecting the short ball, and he backs away. He stands with an open stance and gets his hands high before pulling it through square leg for a boundary.

44.11wd

Wide! Krishna spots Atkinson backing away, and he follows him with a short ball, pace taken off. Gus swings to get it away but misses.

Final over of the game, then? England need 4 runs to win. Root is one run away from his century. But Atkinson is on strike for now. Prasidh Krishna (9-1-48-1) to bowl out.

A concussion check is in progress. The physio has asked for a new helmet to be brought out for Gus Atkinson.

42.51lb

Commentary

England's chase is about to get underway. After a brief huddle, Shubman Gill leads his troops out onto the park. It will be the left-handed duo of Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell to open the innings for England. Jasprit Bumrah will kick things off with the new ball. Duckett is on strike. Two slips in place. Off we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Advantage England - 6 overs left unused and having failed to make the platform count, India are right up against it here in Cardiff, which is a tough ground to defend on. Out of the previous 5 day-night ODIs at this venue, all have been won by the chasing side. England have a good opportunity to level the series, as up until that collapse, it looked like they could be chasing much more than just 234. Do join us back in a bit for the chase.

India flatter to deceive - Ishan Kishan followed him soon after, but then Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer got together to rebuild. At 168/3 at the end of 30 overs, they were setting themselves to put their foot down, but it all fell apart after Kohli was dismissed. Jofra Archer triggered that collapse, and it all crumbled around Iyer, who was left high and dry with partners falling around him. 9 out of the 10 wickets fell to the seamers, with Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson picking up 3 wickets apiece while Saqib Mahmood and Sam Curran also played their part.

A steady start - Earlier, Harry Brook opted to bowl first, hoping to make use of any assistance in the afternoon. The new ball attack was inconsistent, especially Saqib Mahmood and as a result, they could not make the conditions count as well as they would have liked. Shubman Gill picked up where he left off in Birmingham but could not convert his start. Virat Kohli looked busy ever since his arrival, and that took the pressure off Rohit Sharma, who was scratchy throughout his stay before the pressure of dots told on him.

Astonishing turnaround in Cardiff - From 173/3, in a collapse of epic proportions, India have been bowled out for 233, losing 7 for 60. Fifties from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, but nothing much beyond that for the tourists. England will be pretty happy with the way they fought back. To be fair, they never really allowed India to take off. They missed the trick by not having a fourth seamer in Birmingham, but having Gus Atkinson today, they looked better balanced.

OUT! BOWLED! Atkinson wraps it up with a three-for. INDIA ARE BOWLED OUT ON 233! And it's the seamers of England who have done all the damage, breaking India's batting spine. Atkinson keeps it simple. Bowls it in line with the stumps, on a fractionally fuller length, angled in. Prasidh Krishna clears the front leg and swings at it to go up and over mid-wicket, but fails to connect and hears the sound of the ball crashing into the timber. India will be hugely disappointed with the way things unfolded after such a positive start.

43.50

Angling in, on middle, on a good length. Prasidh Krishna blocks it to the off side.

43.40

Much fuller, nipping in, on middle, Prasidh Krishna leans forward and defends it to the left of the bowler.

Prasidh Krishna is the last man in.

43.3W

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! A crucial wicket at a crucial time for England. Atkinson bowls in the channel on a good length, straightening off the pitch. Shreyas Iyer is squared up as he looks to work it away on the off side by opening the bat face. Gets a feather of the outside edge behind to the keeper. Jos Buttler takes a simple catch, and up goes the finger on a polite appeal. Shreyas falls after a fighting knock, and India are 233/9, with 6.3 overs left.

43.20

Pace off, short and wide on off. Iyer slaps it to extra cover. It was there to be put away.

43.21wd

Wide! Dug in short, too high, on middle. Iyer ducks under it.

43.10

Back of a length, nipping in. Shreyas Iyer rocks back to defend it, but the ball nips back to tuck him up for room. Ekes out an inside edge and it bounces past the stumps.

SIX! All the way. Mahmood offers another bouncer, on middle. Jasprit Bumrah rocks back for the pull but gets it off the top edge. There is a fielder stationed at deep backward square leg, but he is a few yards in off the ropes, and all he can do is watch the ball fly over him. 18 runs off the over.

42.50

Full, on off, Jasprit Bumrah defends it to the off side.

42.44

FOUR! More runs! Bumrah is having a good time with the bat. Just a yard behind the fuller length, shaping in, on off and middle. Jasprit opens his stance and heaves it from the inner part of his bat through mid-wicket for another boundary.

42.34

FOUR! Streaky! Bumper over off and middle. Jasprit Bumrah looks to take on the delivery by pulling it to deep square leg, but it climbs big on the batter. It clips the helmet and loops over the keeper. Given as runs, much to the surprise of the bowler.

42.20

Fuller in length, around off, Jasprit Bumrah covers the stumps and blocks it away to the cover region.

42.14

FOUR! Crucial runs for India! Pitches it much fuller, does Saqib Mahmood, just outside off. Jasprit Bumrah swiftly flicks it right of the mid on fielder for the boundary.

Pops up but lands safely! Pitching it just outside off and slanting in, on a good length. Jasprit Bumrah looks to defend it with a straight bat, but it hits the shoulder of the bat and loops toward short third and drops in no-man's land. Single taken.

41.41

Short of a length, on middle, Shreyas Iyer pulls it down to deep square leg for another single.

41.31

Jasprit Bumrah gets off the mark! Good length, outside off, Jasprit Bumrah steers it to deep third for one.

41.20

Half-hearted appeal for LBW, but the ball is surely going down the leg side. On a nagging length, pitching it on middle and angling down the leg side. Jasprit Bumrah misses his swipe and the ball hits the pads before it bounces off toward short fine leg.

41.11

Attacking the stumps, shaping in. Shreyas Iyer nudges it through square leg and gets a single. Iyer pulls up while running and clutches his left hamstring.

OUT! CAUGHT! The short ball does the trick for Gurnoor Brar. Into the wicket, on middle. Jacks anticipates the short ball and backs away towards the leg side. He tries to slam it through the off side with a horizontal bat. He fails to get any timing on the shot and spoons it straight to cover, where Virat Kohli does the rest. 19.32

Fuller in length, on middle and leg. Buttler clips it wide of mid-wicket for a couple of runs to open his account.

19.20

Seaming away a touch, on a good length, on off. Jos tucks it to mid-wicket.

A crucial wicket for India through Dube. Jos Buttler walks in at number 6. There's not much batting left after this. They have Jacks as a proper recognised batter to come next. So this partnership becomes really important from England's pov.

19.1W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Shivam Dube breaks through for India. Going across the off stump from over the wicket, on a nagging length. Curran pokes at the ball away from his body. The ball leaves him with the angle to graze the outside edge. A sharp grab by Ishan Kishan whilst standing up to the stumps. The 41-run stand has been broken. England are 4 down for 94, needing 140 runs in 185 balls.

Change? Nope. Shivam Dube is back on the field and will continue. 2-0-12-1 so far.

FYI, Sundar struggled with a hammy issue while batting and got his right thigh strapped up. DRINKS BREAK! Going by the current run rate, chasing a meagre total, England are still going at a good clip, but they have lost one or two extra wickets. Root has looked far more measured at the crease and is still unbeaten, with the game pretty much revolving around how he goes about this chase, whereas Brook came out with a flamethrower to attack and put the bowlers off their lengths. But got consumed in his own fire and that pushed England back into a rebuilding phase. It is nicely poised at the moment and India would want to prevent a partnership from developing.

Much fuller, nipping in, on middle, Prasidh Krishna leans forward and defends it to the left of the bowler.

There is a fielder stationed at deep backward square leg, but he is a few yards in off the ropes, and all he can do is watch the ball fly over him. 18 runs off the over.

Full, on off, Jasprit Bumrah defends it to the off side.

Much fuller, outside off, nearly a yorker. Jasprit Bumrah leans on it and looks to push it through cover, but gets an inside edge before the ball zips toward the left of the keeper. Jos Buttler does really well to get low and makes a good save.

The new batter is Jasprit Bumrah. Jacob Bethell stays at short leg.

OUT! CAUGHT! Gurnoor Brar runs out of patience and gives his wicket away. Mahmood opts against the short ball and goes fuller in length, outside off. Brar clears the front leg and swings at it. The bat turns in his hand and slices it off the outer half. It goes straight down the throat of deep point, where Gus Atkinson gobbles it up. Wicket number 2 for Saqib Mahmood.

Jacob Bethell puts the helmet on and positions himself at short leg.

No Hat Trick for Archer. But that's a sharp bumper at 147 kph. Nips into the body with bounce. It cramps the batter for room. Gurnoor Brar takes his eyes off the ball, but manages to drop it down the pitch.

India have lost 4 wickets for just 15 runs. Into the bowlers now. Gurnoor Brar is the new man in with Jofra Archer on a hat-trick.

35.5W

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Archer is tearing through the India middle order. It is going downhill rather quickly for the Indians now. Fuller from Jofra, in line with the stumps. Shivam Dube looks to lift it over the bowler. Perhaps he was anticipating a short ball and is pinned in the crease. But it is chipped off the toe end of the bat, to the right of the bowler. Archer is very alert as he bends low on his follow-through, gets both hands to his right and plucks the ball nicely. A soft dismissal for Dube, who comes and goes. India are 193/7.

Shivam Dube makes his way out to bat. Only the tail remains after him.

35.4W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Axar falls cheaply this time, and England continue to pick wickets regularly. A well-directed short ball by Archer, around the off stump line. Axar leans back and tries to play the ramp shot over the keeper, but gets it feathered behind to Jos Buttler, who is not dropping those straightforward chances. India slip further down as they are 193/6, and in a lot of bother now with Iyer stranded at the other end.

35.31

Short again, on the leg stump and it kicks up. Shreyas Iyer rides the bounce and fends it to the leg side for a quick single.

35.31wd

WIDE! Short and down the leg side. Iyer goes for the pull but misses. For some reason, Archer is not happy with the decision.

A smidge fuller, on off. Iyer hangs back and taps it to cover with soft hands.

35.10

Back of a length, nipping in. Iyer tries to block but gets an inside edge onto the front pad and it rolls to the off side.

15 overs left in the first innings. Which is, 90 legal balls. Say if India go run-a-ball, they can get around 280. So if Shreyas is out there till the end, 300 is not out of the equation entirely. Smart bowling changes by Brook. He brought back Archer, who dismissed Kohli. Now, Mahmood comes back and removes the struggling Washington Sundar. Good passage of play for the hosts, as India slip from 178/3 to 181/5. And it's not Dube, but Axar Patel who walks in at number 7.

32.4W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The short ball does the trick for Saqib Mahmood. A well-directed bumper over the right shoulder. Sundar is hampered by the hamstring issue, and as a result, he is less mobile than usual. He stays rooted to the crease and gets his hands high for the pull, but the ball gets big on him and lobs behind off the gloves. Jos Buttler moves to his right and does the rest.

Oh no! The ball has gone straight to hit the seagull wandering in the outfield. Ben Duckett picks up the stricken bird and hands it over to a member of the ground staff. That's really unfortunate. Meanwhile, Washington Sundar is down on the ground, with the physio out to check on him. His right thigh is getting strapped up. Might have pulled a hammy. He eventually gets back on his feet, wears his pads and is good to continue.

32.31

Oh, that's sad. On a good length, on off. Iyer gets on top of the bounce and punches it to deep cover. The ball on its way to the fielder in the deep pings the seagull.

DRINKS BREAK! Archer delivers a massive wicket for England, exactly why he was brought back into the attack. Kohli was looking dangerous after the fifty but India will have to rebuild once again. However, Shreyas is going great guns at the other end and is inching towards his own half ton. But with still around 18 overs to go, there's still a lot of time left in the innings. India will aim to breach 300, but to do so, they will have to bat smartly with the remaining batting to come. England will look to get one more here to push back the tourists on the back foot. It's nicely poised at the moment. Washington Sundar is in at number 6.

31.4W

OUT! GONE! No doubt about this one. Jofra Archer answers the skipper's call by getting rid of the big fish. Angled in, on a back of a length, on middle and leg. Kohli tries to shovel it away with the angle but the ball is not quite short enough for the shot. A top edge is found and it goes straight down the throat of deep third, where Adil Rashid takes the catch at waist height.

31.30

Kohli survives. Into the deck, on middle. Kohli pivots on the back foot and plays more of a short-arm jab. It sneaks under the blade and brushes the back thigh on its way to the keeper. Jos Buttler gets low in front in an attempt to take the catch. Buttler is unsure and it is sent upstairs by the umpires. On the side-on angle, the spike appears when the ball has passed the bat. The third umpire is happy with it, though and proceeds to check the legality of the catch. One replay is enough for the umpire to confirm that the ball bounced in front before going into the gloves.

Edged? Or off the pads? Archer looks confident that there's bat involved. Virat doesn't seem much worried. The on-field umpires send it upstairs for a review. Well, UltraEdge shows a clear spike when the ball is next to the inside edge. Now, onto the legality of the catch. The replay confirms that the ball yorks Buttler's gloves. NOT OUT!

They weren't quite consistent enough with the new ball and, to make matters worse, Rohit Sharma was put down early in his innings. A little too straight, on the fuller side. Gill misses out on the glance and the ball goes away off the pads towards square leg for a leg bye.

2.21

Angled in at the hips, Rohit goes back in the crease and flicks it away through square leg for a single.

2.10

Hits the back of a length, on middle and leg. Sharma hops to nudge it away but misses and wears it on the thigh pad.

1.63

A run saved. Mahmood pitches it up, on middle. Rohit does not try to overhit this one and just pushes it back past the bowler with the full face of the bat. Harry Brook goes after it from mid off and dives to prevent the boundary. The third umpire is summoned to check the effort. Brook's left leg is ever so close to the boundary cushions when he flicks the ball away, but the third umpire is convinced that it is a clean effort.

Excellent work by Brook. But has he managed to save a boundary? The replay shows that his left boot is in touching distance of the cushion, but the third umpire is satisfied and confirms that he hauled the ball in and then dived over the ropes. Saves a run for his side.

1.51

At 137 kph, honing in on the off stump, on a nagging length. Gill pushes out in front of his body with a straight bat. It angles in before nipping away off the deck. The ball comes off an outside edge and rolls down to deep third. They cross.

1.40

Moving away off the seam, on a good length. Not close enough to make the batter play. Gill is happy to let it go.

1.30

In the corridor of uncertainty now and the length is pulled back a bit. Shubman shoulders arms.

1.24

FOUR! Easy pickings. Floated up on the pads by Saqib. Gill needs no second invitation. Stays balanced at the crease and flicks it away. It is a bit uppish but in the big gap between mid-wicket and mid on for the first boundary of the game.

1.10

Starts well, does Mahmood. Lands it on a length, around the off stump. A confident forward press by Gill as he taps it to cover.

A tidy start by Archer. Already signs of the ball holding up a bit. Saqib Mahmood will bowl from the opposite end. Two slips waiting for Gill.

Goes past the bat! Fuller than the previous ball, outside off. Sharma pushes at the ball away from his body, and his feet go nowhere. The ball nips back in to beat him on the inside edge.

0.50

On a length, in the channel at 143 kph, Rohit covers his off stump and makes the leave.

0.40

Nice and tight, on a good length, on the off stump. Rohit defends it watchfully from the crease.

0.31

Bashes the surface, does Archer. Near the tramline on off. Gill frees his arms and goes after it. It rolls off the toe end down to deep third. Single taken and the Indian skipper is off the mark.

0.20

Hooping back in, fuller in length, on middle. This stands up a bit in the surface as Gill turns it to square leg.

0.21wd

Wide! Digs it in short but drifts down leg. Gill ducks and lets it through.

0.11

Rohit and India are away. Archer hits the deck hard at 140 kph. Sharma hops to deal with it. Gets a bit squared up as the ball straightens off the deck. Gets an outside edge and it goes down to deep third for a single.

It's time for action in a sun-bathed Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. But before that, here's an interesting stat. The captain who has won the toss in this white-ball series has lost all the games. Out walk the two umpires. Right after them, the English players, led by Harry Brook, scatter across the park. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma are the two Indian openers who make their way to the crease. Jofra Archer has the new ball and will set things rolling in the 2nd ODI. Rohit is on strike with a couple of slips in place. GAME ON!

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan (WK) (In for KL Rahul), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna.

England (Playing XI) - Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson (In for Josh Tongue), Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Saqib Mahmood (In for Liam Dawson).

The skipper of India - Shubman Gill says that they would have bowled first as well. Shares that he is pleased with the previous win and feels it was a near-perfect game. Hopes that they can have another good game today. On being clinical in the last game, Gill says that their bowlers did a very good job. Adds that they had a good 6-7 overs in the first Powerplay and they did well to put their opposition under pressure. On playing in Cardiff, he notes that he has very good memories while representing Glamorgan, and he is looking forward to making another good memory. Informs that KL Rahul is unwell and Ishan Kishan comes in his place.

The captain of England - Harry Brook says it looks like a good surface and notes that the even covering of grass should bring some early seam movement into play. When asked about what changes from the first ODI, Brook stresses better execution. He backs his side's fighting qualities, pointing out that England were never out of the contest and pushed the last game deep despite the result. He expects more of that same fight from his group today. On the team changes, he informs that Saqib Mahmood and Gus Atkinson come in for Josh Tongue and Liam Dawson.

TOSS - It is bright and sunny in Cardiff, and we are all set for the flip of the coin. 'Heads' is the call from Shubman Gill, but it has come down as a Tail. England opt to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Varun Aaron observes a nice covering of green grass with some moisture content, so he feels that the fast bowlers are going to be very happy seeing that. Varun presses this thumb against the surface, and he says that it creates an indent, proof of the moisture sitting under this surface. He points out that England got their toss call wrong last time out, choosing to bat first on a pitch clearly demanding first use with the ball. His advice for the game doesn't change. He stresses that bowling first will be a good option to hunt those early wickets and let the surface do the rest of the talking.

A milestone in sight - England, meanwhile, are just one win away from their 200th ODI victory on home soil and will hope Cardiff proves to be a happy hunting ground once again, where they have won 10 out of their 14 completed ODIs. Joe Root has piled up 469 runs in 11 ODI innings at Cardiff, the most by any batter at the ground, and he comes into this game fresh off an unbeaten 76 in the series opener. Jos Buttler isn't far behind either, with 443 runs here, while averaging an impressive 63.28 and striking at 124.43. If England are to level the series, those two will likely have a big role to play. Stick around for the toss and team news.

Riding the momentum - India have plenty of reasons to feel confident. Shubman Gill's purple patch shows no signs of slowing down. His unbeaten 80 in Birmingham was his fifth 50-plus score in just six ODI innings this year. The return of Jasprit Bumrah has also transformed India's pace attack. The one question, though, is whether the lack of a genuine wicket-taking option through the middle overs could come back to hurt them, unless Kuldeep Yadav gets a game today.

How's everyone doing? On second thought, perhaps that's not the best question to ask the England fans after last night's heartbreaking semifinal defeat to Argentina. But the cricket rolls on, and so do we. Hello, and a very warm welcome to Cardiff for the second ODI between England and India.

... MATCH DAY ...

First blood drawn - Birmingham finally brought some joy for India on this tour of the UK. After being blanked in Ireland and then in the T20I series by England, India lived up to the billing of the top-ranked ODI side by taking a 1-0 lead. England had their moments, but they were second best on the day.  For the hosts, it was a 13th defeat in 19 ODIs since the start of 2025 and a sixth straight loss to India in the format. It also came at a venue where England had turned Edgbaston into a fortress, having not lost an ODI there since 2015. The action now shifts to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. India have the chance to wrap up the series, while England need a win to keep it alive and set up a winner-takes-all finale at Lord's. The pace puzzle - Much of the T20I series was about how well England adapted to the conditions, something Harry Brook repeatedly highlighted. But at Edgbaston, that wasn't quite the case. Opting against an extra seamer left them short of the penetration needed to consistently trouble India's batting, while their spin-heavy attack failed to make the desired impact. Brydon Carse's return to the squad gives England another pace option after months on the sidelines through injury, and with just a day's turnaround between games, Carse, Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood could all come into the selection conversation. Collapse proves costly - England's batting, meanwhile, was undone by a familiar collapse. Reduced to 107/6, they needed Joe Root and Liam Dawson to stage a rescue act just to reach a competitive total. England will hope to treat the collapse as a one-off while ensuring it doesn't become a recurring theme. Pacers set the tone - India, on the other hand, will be encouraged by the response from their pace attack after the punishment they endured in the T20Is. Playing his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup final, Jasprit Bumrah may have had just one wicket to show for his efforts, but the attack looked a different proposition with him leading it. Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna complemented him brilliantly in conditions that offered assistance to the seamers. In hindsight, they may feel they took their foot off the pedal and could have remained more attacking instead of allowing England a route back into the contest. Leading from the front - Shubman Gill continued his outstanding run in the format. Averaging 67.35 since the start of 2025, with the third-most ODI runs in the world and the most by an Indian during that period, he carried that form into Birmingham before retiring hurt on 80. India have backed batting depth over specialist bowling options for a while now, and that meant Kuldeep Yadav missed out in the series opener. The decision, however, was vindicated as Axar Patel and Washington Sundar calmly saw the chase through. The big talking point heading into the second ODI will revolve around Jasprit Bumrah. With just a day's gap between the first two matches, it remains to be seen whether India persist with him or hand Arshdeep Singh an opportunity. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - ENG - LWWLL | IND - WWWWL. What to expect? The forecast is set to stay dry throughout, with temperatures climbing into the high 20s. The new ball should offer the seamers some assistance, perhaps even more so under the lights later in the day. But, as has so often been the case at Sophia Gardens, the surface is expected to flatten out as the innings progresses. As so often in this format, it could once again come down to adapting to the conditions and execution. Who are you backing to come out on top?
