DRINKS BREAK! The game is intriguingly poised at this stage. It goes without saying just how crucial Joe Root's role is in this chase for England. From India's perspective, Jasprit Bumrah has only two overs left up his sleeve, but the rest of the attack will need to rise to the occasion and keep asking questions of the English batters. Only the bowlers remain to come after this pair. While the likes of Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid are more than capable with the bat, it is this pair that will have to bat deep.

This pair has done well to see off Jasprit Bumrah's opening burst without any further casualties. It is time for Powerplay 2, with India now allowed a maximum of four fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

Both English openers are back in the hut inside 4 overs. Here comes the skipper, Harry Brook. We have seen him take the counterattacking route across formats to put the pressure back on the opposition. Will he take that route or just see off this new ball spell?

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The variable bounce proves too hot to handle for Bethell. Krishna slams the deck hard from around the stump. It is a length ball that springs up from the surface, around off. Jacob Bethell stays back and pokes at it tamely. Can only manage to get an outside edge behind. Ishan Kishan takes a straightforward catch. OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Bumrah delivers a gem of a ball, and India have their first breakthrough. Jasprit lands it on a good length, around the off stump and gets it to angle away off the pitch. Ben Duckett loosely dangles the bat away from his body without moving his feet at all. Gets a faint outside edge, and Ishan Kishan makes no mistake. He grabs it a bit to his left. A golden duck for Duckett and England are 0/1, chasing 234.

OUT! BOWLED! Atkinson wraps it up with a three-for. INDIA ARE BOWLED OUT ON 233! And it's the seamers of England who have done all the damage, breaking India's batting spine. Atkinson keeps it simple. Bowls it in line with the stumps, on a fractionally fuller length, angled in. Prasidh Krishna clears the front leg and swings at it to go up and over mid-wicket, but fails to connect and hears the sound of the ball crashing into the timber. India will be hugely disappointed with the way things unfolded after such a positive start.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Archer is tearing through the India middle order. It is going downhill rather quickly for the Indians now. Fuller from Jofra, in line with the stumps. Shivam Dube looks to lift it over the bowler. Perhaps he was anticipating a short ball and is pinned in the crease. But it is chipped off the toe end of the bat, to the right of the bowler. Archer is very alert as he bends low on his follow-through, gets both hands to his right and plucks the ball nicely. A soft dismissal for Dube, who comes and goes. India are 193/7.

Axar leans back and tries to play the ramp shot over the keeper, but gets it feathered behind to Jos Buttler, who is not dropping those straightforward chances. India slip further down as they are 193/6, and in a lot of bother now with Iyer stranded at the other end.

WIDE! Short and down the leg side. Iyer goes for the pull but misses. For some reason, Archer is not happy with the decision.

Sundar is hampered by the hamstring issue, and as a result, he is less mobile than usual. India will aim to breach 300, but to do so, they will have to bat smartly with the remaining batting to come. England will look to get one more here to push back the tourists on the back foot. OUT! GONE! No doubt about this one. Jofra Archer answers the skipper's call by getting rid of the big fish. Angled in, on a back of a length, on middle and leg. Kohli tries to shovel it away with the angle but the ball is not quite short enough for the shot. DRINKS BREAK! This has been a promising start for India, while England will feel they have let an opportunity slip. Rohit himself has looked scratchy so far, but Virat Kohli's arrival has helped ease the pressure. The odd ball has held up in the surface and it is on the slower side, but with two vastly experienced campaigners at the crease, India will be aiming to negotiate the middle overs smartly and lay the platform. Given how deep India bat, England need to chip away at the wickets through the middle overs.

Shubman Gill presses in front to play the cover drive, but cannot keep it along the ground and hits it flatly towards Ben Duckett stationed at cover. It leaves the bat at a rate of knots but Duckett maintains his cool and grabs it by diving to his right over his right shoulder with a reverse cup. India are 44/1 after 7.4 overs.

FOUR! Loose ball and gets the treatment! Sprays it down the leg stump, full in length. Gill uses the pace and helps it with a tickle towards deep fine leg for a boundary. It races away in a flash.

Nips down on the pads, on a fullish length. Rohit tries to flick but misses and the ball rolls off the front pad to the leg side. They cross for a leg bye.

Halfway through the first Powerplay. Gill has played some exquisite shots already and is looking really good.

FOUR! Gets it through, this time off the back foot. This is around the off pole, not all that short but enough for Gill. Shubman lets the ball come to him, gets on top of the bounce and punches it past cover-point for four more.

FOUR! Glorious from the Indian skipper.  Archer hurls it full, on middle. Gill presses forward and presents the full face of the bat. Plays an uppish drive and nearly takes down Rohit Sharma at the non-striker's end. Rohit ducks under it and the mid on fielder stands no chance.

In line with the off pole, on a nagging length. Gill covers the line and blocks it out.

Just outside the off stump, fractionally short. Shubman attempts the cut but chops it down on the off side.

Fuller in length, on off. Gill is late on the drive and mistimes it to mid off.

Rapped on the pads! Not given. The talk among the England players is whether there was any bat. Harry Brook has a word with his men before taking the review. Keeps it full and it tails back in, on middle and leg. Gill leans across to flick it away but gets hit on the front pad. The UltraEdge comes up with a spike, confirming the inside edge. FOUR! Hit with absolute authority. Mahmood pushes the length up at the sticks. Gill gives the bowler a premeditated charge and stays leg side of the ball. He gets his hands through and slams it over cover for a boundary.

DROPPED, FOUR! Gus Atkinson is the guilty party. This will not please Jofra Archer one bit. An early reprieve for Rohit Sharma. Archer bends his back and digs it in short, over the right shoulder. Rohit hops but is rushed on the pull and the ball also gets big on him. Skies it behind square leg, where Atkinson runs to his left in the deep and is on the move. He barely lays a hand on it and it catches him on the wrist before dropping to the ground, and it then trickles to the fence.

Fuller in length and it moves back in the air, on off. Rohit pushes in front of his body. The bat turns in his hand and he miscues it off the inner half to mid on.

Into the deck, on middle. Rohit gets on his toes and pats it down the strip.

A little too straight, on the fuller side. Gill misses out on the glance and the ball goes away off the pads towards square leg for a leg bye.

Angled in at the hips, Rohit goes back in the crease and flicks it away through square leg for a single.

Hits the back of a length, on middle and leg. Sharma hops to nudge it away but misses and wears it on the thigh pad.

A run saved. Mahmood pitches it up, on middle. Rohit does not try to overhit this one and just pushes it back past the bowler with the full face of the bat. Harry Brook goes after it from mid off and dives to prevent the boundary. The third umpire is summoned to check the effort. Brook's left leg is ever so close to the boundary cushions when he flicks the ball away, but the third umpire is convinced that it is a clean effort.

Excellent work by Brook. But has he managed to save a boundary? The replay shows that his left boot is in touching distance of the cushion, but the third umpire is satisfied and confirms that he hauled the ball in and then dived over the ropes. Saves a run for his side.

At 137 kph, honing in on the off stump, on a nagging length. Gill pushes out in front of his body with a straight bat. It angles in before nipping away off the deck. The ball comes off an outside edge and rolls down to deep third. They cross.

Moving away off the seam, on a good length. Not close enough to make the batter play. Gill is happy to let it go.

In the corridor of uncertainty now and the length is pulled back a bit. Shubman shoulders arms.

FOUR! Easy pickings. Floated up on the pads by Saqib. Gill needs no second invitation. Stays balanced at the crease and flicks it away. It is a bit uppish but in the big gap between mid-wicket and mid on for the first boundary of the game.

Starts well, does Mahmood. Lands it on a length, around the off stump. A confident forward press by Gill as he taps it to cover.

A tidy start by Archer. Already signs of the ball holding up a bit. Saqib Mahmood will bowl from the opposite end. Two slips waiting for Gill.

Goes past the bat! Fuller than the previous ball, outside off. Sharma pushes at the ball away from his body, and his feet go nowhere. The ball nips back in to beat him on the inside edge.

On a length, in the channel at 143 kph, Rohit covers his off stump and makes the leave.

Nice and tight, on a good length, on the off stump. Rohit defends it watchfully from the crease.

Bashes the surface, does Archer. Near the tramline on off. Gill frees his arms and goes after it. It rolls off the toe end down to deep third. Single taken and the Indian skipper is off the mark.

Hooping back in, fuller in length, on middle. This stands up a bit in the surface as Gill turns it to square leg.

Wide! Digs it in short but drifts down leg. Gill ducks and lets it through.

Rohit and India are away. Archer hits the deck hard at 140 kph. Sharma hops to deal with it. Gets a bit squared up as the ball straightens off the deck. Gets an outside edge and it goes down to deep third for a single.

It's time for action in a sun-bathed Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. But before that, here's an interesting stat. The captain who has won the toss in this white-ball series has lost all the games. The skipper of India - Shubman Gill says that they would have bowled first as well. Shares that he is pleased with the previous win and feels it was a near-perfect game. Hopes that they can have another good game today. On being clinical in the last game, Gill says that their bowlers did a very good job. Adds that they had a good 6-7 overs in the first Powerplay and they did well to put their opposition under pressure. On playing in Cardiff, he notes that he has very good memories while representing Glamorgan, and he is looking forward to making another good memory. Informs that KL Rahul is unwell and Ishan Kishan comes in his place.

The captain of England - Harry Brook says it looks like a good surface and notes that the even covering of grass should bring some early seam movement into play. When asked about what changes from the first ODI, Brook stresses better execution. He backs his side's fighting qualities, pointing out that England were never out of the contest and pushed the last game deep despite the result. He expects more of that same fight from his group today. On the team changes, he informs that Saqib Mahmood and Gus Atkinson come in for Josh Tongue and Liam Dawson.

TOSS - It is bright and sunny in Cardiff, and we are all set for the flip of the coin. 'Heads' is the call from Shubman Gill, but it has come down as a Tail. England opt to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Varun Aaron observes a nice covering of green grass with some moisture content, so he feels that the fast bowlers are going to be very happy seeing that. Varun presses this thumb against the surface, and he says that it creates an indent, proof of the moisture sitting under this surface. He points out that England got their toss call wrong last time out, choosing to bat first on a pitch clearly demanding first use with the ball. His advice for the game doesn't change. He stresses that bowling first will be a good option to hunt those early wickets and let the surface do the rest of the talking.

A milestone in sight - England, meanwhile, are just one win away from their 200th ODI victory on home soil and will hope Cardiff proves to be a happy hunting ground once again, where they have won 10 out of their 14 completed ODIs. Joe Root has piled up 469 runs in 11 ODI innings at Cardiff, the most by any batter at the ground, and he comes into this game fresh off an unbeaten 76 in the series opener. Jos Buttler isn't far behind either, with 443 runs here, while averaging an impressive 63.28 and striking at 124.43. Riding the momentum - India have plenty of reasons to feel confident. Shubman Gill's purple patch shows no signs of slowing down. His unbeaten 80 in Birmingham was his fifth 50-plus score in just six ODI innings this year. The return of Jasprit Bumrah has also transformed India's pace attack. The one question, though, is whether the lack of a genuine wicket-taking option through the middle overs could come back to hurt them, unless Kuldeep Yadav gets a game today.

First blood drawn - Birmingham finally brought some joy for India on this tour of the UK. After being blanked in Ireland and then in the T20I series by England, India lived up to the billing of the top-ranked ODI side by taking a 1-0 lead. England had their moments, but they were second best on the day.  For the hosts, it was a 13th defeat in 19 ODIs since the start of 2025 and a sixth straight loss to India in the format. It also came at a venue where England had turned Edgbaston into a fortress, having not lost an ODI there since 2015. The action now shifts to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. India have the chance to wrap up the series, while England need a win to keep it alive and set up a winner-takes-all finale at Lord's. The pace puzzle - Much of the T20I series was about how well England adapted to the conditions, something Harry Brook repeatedly highlighted. But at Edgbaston, that wasn't quite the case. Opting against an extra seamer left them short of the penetration needed to consistently trouble India's batting, while their spin-heavy attack failed to make the desired impact. Brydon Carse's return to the squad gives England another pace option after months on the sidelines through injury, and with just a day's turnaround between games, Carse, Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood could all come into the selection conversation. Collapse proves costly - England's batting, meanwhile, was undone by a familiar collapse. Reduced to 107/6, they needed Joe Root and Liam Dawson to stage a rescue act just to reach a competitive total. England will hope to treat the collapse as a one-off while ensuring it doesn't become a recurring theme. Pacers set the tone - India, on the other hand, will be encouraged by the response from their pace attack after the punishment they endured in the T20Is. Playing his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup final, Jasprit Bumrah may have had just one wicket to show for his efforts, but the attack looked a different proposition with him leading it. Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna complemented him brilliantly in conditions that offered assistance to the seamers. In hindsight, they may feel they took their foot off the pedal and could have remained more attacking instead of allowing England a route back into the contest. Leading from the front - Shubman Gill continued his outstanding run in the format. Averaging 67.35 since the start of 2025, with the third-most ODI runs in the world and the most by an Indian during that period, he carried that form into Birmingham before retiring hurt on 80. India have backed batting depth over specialist bowling options for a while now, and that meant Kuldeep Yadav missed out in the series opener. The decision, however, was vindicated as Axar Patel and Washington Sundar calmly saw the chase through. The big talking point heading into the second ODI will revolve around Jasprit Bumrah.
