Then there were two! Right then, we are done with Qualifier 2 and only the Final remains. In a fascinating tournament, we will finish just as we started as Chennai take on Gujarat in the grand finale on Sunday, the 28th of May in Ahmedabad. The very first match of the season was between these two teams and at the same venue as well, a fitting ending to the season perhaps. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but our build-up, as usual, will begin a lot sooner. Do join us then. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Shubman Gill is the Player of the Match for his stunning century. He says that for him it is all about playing ball-to-ball and keeping it over-to-over. Claims that when hit 3 sixes in an over, he realized that it was his day and he needed to make the most of it. Mentions that he looks to keep practicing and grow as a cricketer, player, and batter. Reckons that it helps when you come from a good international season and says that once he starts, he can keep going. Feels that things changed after the West Indies tour and he got injured, he decided to make some technical changes leading up to this tournament after the T20 World Cup. Informs that expectations are a factor when you are outside the ropes but when on the ground, he gives his 100% and tries to keep the intensity throughout. Ends by saying that this is his best inning in the Indian T20 League so far.

Gujarat's skipper, Hardik Pandya says that a lot of hard work has gone behind their win and it is just a reflection of that. Mentions that the clarity Shubman Gill has this year is amazing and the knock he played in this game is one of the finest he has ever seen and goes on to say that Gill is a superstar and will do big things for the franchise and for India as well. Adds that his job is simple and that is to keep the mindset of the boys positive. Says that when things are not going along well, Rashid Khan comes in and does the job superbly. Mentions that irrelevant of the result, they just want to play good cricket and is excited and happy for the boys.

The Presentation ceremony...

Mohit Sharma, who had an outstanding bowling performance, is up for a chat. He says that he is a little lucky to get those wickets. Mentions that it was skidding on nicely and looked like the opponents were on course at one stage with the way Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav batted so they were worried. Explains that they didn’t want to experiment in front of Suryakumar Yadav and bowl length balls even if they would go for sixes. Adds that after Suryakumar Yadav got out they were more confident of winning. Ends by saying that they were certain of a final appearance only after the final wicket fell.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai says it was a great total by Gujarat and adds that Shubman Gill batted really well. Reckons that they conceded 20-25 runs extra but with their batting lineup, they were quite positive. States that Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav batted well in the middle but they lost their way in the run chase. Claims that they had a chat about giving it a good crack and being positive but the Powerplay didn’t go well as they lost a couple of wickets. Goes on to say that they could not get the momentum going and Suryakumar Yadav did well to keep them in the game but needed someone to take it deep. Credits Gujarat for playing well. When asked about Ishan Kishan, he says that he had a concussion and last-minute changes are not ideal but as a team, they need to adapt to different conditions. Mentions that he does not want to look at that and they didn’t play well enough to win the game. Tells that there have been positives like playing a Qualifier and coming third in a tournament along with the batting. Adds that the young players have done well and they can take it into next season to see what they can do with the squad. Informs that all the bowling teams have been challenged and they had a great bowling performance last time around but all credit to Shubman Gill and he is hoping that he can continue that form. Ends by saying that Tim had a role through the season and where he is going to bat but Vishnu got a chance as he is a good player so they do not want to look at any judgment as wrong as Gujarat came on top.

Earlier in the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and put Gujarat in to bat on a wicket that was under the covers for some time. Gujarat had a steady start with the bat but lost Wriddhiman Saha just after the Powerplay. It was then a sensational 138-run stand between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan that put the hosts in command. Gill went on to score a third hundred in the last four innings and ended up getting 129 runs, the highest individual score of this season. Sudharsan batted well too and Hardik Pandya finished the innings off with a bit of a flourish. For Mumbai, there wasn't much to talk about their bowling apart from Jason Behrendorff who bowled a very economical spell and Kumar Kartikeya too did well in the two overs he bowled. Coming to the chase, it was up and down for the first half but in the second half of the chase, Gujarat had the bowling capabilities and were able to completely derail the Mumbai innings.

Mumbai's brilliant run comes to an end as they fall well short in Qualifier 2 and miss out on the grand finale. Coming in to chase 234 runs, Mumbai had a few injury problems and were forced to use the Impact Player, Nehal Wadhera at the top of the order. Neither he nor Rohit Sharma got going and even Cameron Green got a blow around the left elbow which forced him to retire hurt. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav did build up a solid stand but just when Varma was at his best, he got out. Yadav kept going from one end and Green came back on to bat and supported Yadav for a bit. Once the ball was changed though, Mumbai started to self-destruct with the bat. They went from 155 for 5 to 162 for 9 in a jiffy and in the end, they just ran completely out of steam with the likes of Tim David and Vishnu Vinod unable to fire.

BACK-TO-BACK FINALS FOR GUJARAT! What an impressive performance from the home team and Gujarat have done to Mumbai what Mumbai did to Lucknow and have just cruised to victory here. Gujarat had a mammoth total on the board thanks to a master class from Shubman Gill up top. And then, Mohammad Shami gave them the perfect start with the ball with a couple of early wickets. They did get high for a few runs from thereon but on the final ball of the Powerplay, Rashid Khan got rid of Tilak Varma who was spitting fire till then. They didn't pick up many wickets in the middle phase but once Joshua Little and Mohit Sharma came on to bowl, things changed. Little created pressure and got a wicket but it was Sharma who bowled a brilliant spell and ended up with five wickets, including the prized wicket of a well-set Suryakumar Yadav. In the end, Gujarat just had too many runs on the board and won the game comfortably.

Commentary

We are back for the second essay as the umpires make their way out to the middle. The Gujarat players walk onto the field and take their respective fielding positions. Ishan Kishan has not taken the field and it will be Nehal Wadhera who comes as an Impact Player in place of Akash Madhwal. He will open the inning with Rohit Sharma and they will want to get off to a good start. Mohammad Shami has the new ball in his hand and will begin proceedings. Let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Gujarat find themselves in a comfortable position and have given their strong bowling unit a massive total to defend. They will look to come out and take some early wickets but will not want to take the Mumbai batting lightly despite the score. The Mumbai batters will have to go from the word go as they will not want the scoreboard pressure to build further. To make matters worse, their top three were off the field towards the end of the game with Ishan Kishan taking a knock on his face while Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green went off the field with finger injuries. Will we see a remarkable run chase? Or will Gujarat trot home to an easy win? We will find out shortly.

Shubman Gill, the star with the bat for Gujarat is down for a chat. He says that it feels nice and they have a good total on the board. Adds that he sweats a lot and some of it was going in his eyes as well and goes on to say that they play their best cricket on the back of a loss. Says that the dimensions are such that you can attack the bowlers and pick up twos as well on the bigger side. Mentions that there wasn't much grass and the ball was coming on nicely and the ball didn't swing for much either.

Gujarat got off to a circumspect start and Wriddhiman Saha seemed to struggle out in the middle before losing his wicket. Sai Kishore played a supporting role in the 138-run partnership with Shubman Gill and was eventually brought off retired out on 43 to allow their hitters to come into play. Hardik Pandya scored 28 runs in 13 balls to help the reigning champions end strong but this inning was all about the Prince of Indian cricket. He looked to be absolutely comfortable from the word go as he middled the ball like a man in form and had one catch dropped early in his inning. Barring that chance, he played a flawless inning as he reached his third century in this edition of the Indian T20 League. He was eventually dismissed on 129 in just 60 balls but with the Orange Cap firmly on his head, he has announced that he is ready to take the throne.

We are finding it difficult to find words to describe Shubman Gill and the knock he has played today! His swashbuckling inning has helped the reigning champions reach a formidable total of 233 runs on the board. Mumbai have an uphill task to climb if they are to make it to the finals as their bowlers have been demolished in this game. They were able to stay disciplined in the first five overs but once the Gujarat batters began to up the ante, the game kept slipping from their grasp. Piyush Chawla has to use his guile to dismiss Wriddhiman Saha as there was very little purchase for the bowlers on this wicket and Akash Madhwal dismissed Shubman Gill towards the death overs. Barring Jason Behrendorff and Kumar Kartikeya, the rest of the bowlers proved to be far too expensive, and now the five-time champions will have to bat out of their skins.

SIX! Wow, what a shot to end the innings! Full and wide but in the slot, Hardik Pandya stays on the back foot and just holds his shape before lofting it nonchalantly over extra cover. The ball travels over the ropes and Gujarat end with a commanding total of 233/3 on the board!

19.54

EDGED AND FOUR! Bowled on a fullish length and outside off, Hardik Pandya throws the kitchen sink at it and gets a thick outside edge. The ball flies well to the right of the keeper and runs away into the third man fence.

19.52wd

TWO WIDES! Slower one, on a good length and pushed well outside off. Rashid Khan leaves it alone for a wide and Hardik Pandya calls him for a run. The keeper picks up the ball and gets in the direct hit at the keeper's end but Pandya is well in. Also, Mumbai review the delivery for a wide call but the replays show that it is outside the tramline and the wide call will stand.

19.41

On a hard length and pushed outside off, Hardik Pandya stays deep in his crease and mistimes the shot down to long off for just one more.

19.31

Very full again outside off, Rashid Khan just crouches a bit and half-laps it through mid-wicket for a run.

19.24

FOUR! Chris Jordan just misses his length a bit and serves it in the slot around off. Rashid Khan stays deep in his crease and thumps the ball right back over Jordan's head for a boundary.

19.11

Very full, around off, Hardik Pandya can only manage to drill it down to long off for a single.

Sai Sudharsan has been withdrawn from the field and Rashid Khan has been sent out to bat. As it stands, Sai Sudharsan is retired out. Chris Jordan will bowl the last over.

18.60

Another dot to finish the over, 9 off it. Very full and around off, Sai Sudharsan looks to shuffle across and just flick it past short fine leg but misses and gets hit on the pads.

18.50

Nails the yorker at the toes, Sai Sudharsan flicks it straight to square leg. A golden dot ball.

18.41

Good length around off, this is punched away on the up toward long off for a single.

18.30

Much better from Akash Madhwal as he bangs in a good bumper. The ball comes in at a difficult height and Hardik Pandya fails to connect.

18.22

Another high full toss outside off, Hardik Pandya gets under it and lofts it over extra cover. The fielder from deep cover runs around and manages to keep it in play. Two runs are taken.

18.16

SIX! All the way! This is a high full toss outside off, Hardik Pandya stays put and somehow manages to force the lofted shot over the cover fence for a maximum. Pandya also takes the review for a no ball. The replays show that it is just below waist height and Akash Madhwal will be a relived man as it is deemed a legal delivery.

17.51

Very full and around off, Hardik Pandya stays rooted to his crease and guides it on the full toward third man for just another single.

17.41

Hits the length hard and keeps the line close to off stump. Sai Sudharsan chops it down to backward square leg for one and the 200 is now up for Gujarat.

17.30

Length ball, outside off, Sai Sudharsan walks across the stumps and attempts the cheeky scoop but fails to get bat on ball.

17.21

Full and wide, this is sliced away down to third man for a single.

17.10

Swing and a miss! Slower one, full and angled across the batter. Hardik Pandya hangs deep and has a wild swing across the line but misses.

Full and wide, Hardik Pandya crunches it straight to Rohit Sharma at extra cover but the latter drops the catch, not that it would have counted anyway. They get a single.

16.65nb

NO BALL AND FOUR! How did that go to the fence? A beamer from Akash Madhwal, Hardik Pandya looks to advance but is taken aback and crouches down leaving his bat up in the air. The ball takes the inner edge of the willow and runs down to fine leg for a boundary. Free Hit coming up.

Hardik Pandya is the new batter at the crease.

16.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! Akash Madhwal does get the big fish! Bowls it full and into the pads, Shubman Gill clears the front leg and whips it toward deep mid-wicket. Tim David there takes a sharp catch low to his right but the celebrations are muted from the Mumbai players. End of probably one of the greatest knocks in this tournament's history and Gill gets a huge standing ovation as he walks back to the hut, deservingly so.

Strategic break! Well then, the last few overs have been electric and Shubman Gill seems to be batting on a different tangent altogether. PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull is pitchside and starts by informing us of the dimensions of the ground. He says that it is 63 m to point and 68 m towards the leg side so it is slightly long square on one side. Adds that it is 74 m downtown and there are reasonable-sized pockets at mid-wicket with loads of runs being scored so far on pitch number 7. He is joined by Matthew Hayden who says that the pitch looks very patchy. Mentions that there was a lot more grass cover on it earlier in the competition and now it seems to be rolled into the surface. Reckons that it should not be too bad for the batters but there are some quality spinners and some good bowlers in the Powerplay. Feels that though there have been lots of runs it looks more like a 180-run wicket.

UPDATE - 7.20 pm IST (1.50 pm GMT) - There is more good news from the ground. The toss will take place at 7.45 pm IST (2.15 pm GMT) and play will begin at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT). So, grab a cup of coffee and stay tuned as the wait is almost over.

UPDATE 6.59 pm IST (1.29 pm GMT) - Great news! The rain has stopped and the covers are starting to come off which gives us great hopes of a full game taking place. Also, for now, the toss has been officially delayed. The umpires have scheduled an inspection for 7.20 pm IST (1.50 pm GMT). Stick around for further updates.

UPDATE - 6.45 pm IST (1.15 pm GMT) - We have some gloomy news to share as it is raining heavily on the ground and the covers are on the pitch. We hope that after so much anticipation, we will not be let down by the rain gods. The latest that a five-overs per-side match can begin is 11.56 pm IST (6.26 pm GMT) with a 10-minute interval and no strategic breaks. If either team is unable to complete their five overs there will be a Super Over to decide the tie and if that is not possible, Gujarat shall progress courtesy of finishing higher on the table. We do anticipate the game to begin though so stay tuned for further updates.

Gujarat have been the most impressive team in terms of performance over the last two seasons and look like a well-oiled machine working at maximum efficiency. They powered through the group stages with 10 wins but stumbled at a crucial juncture when they lost Qualifier 1 against Chennai, leaving them with one more game to play to make it to the finale at this venue in a couple of days. They will want to return to winning ways as they hunt for consecutive titles but will have to be at their best against two of the most successful sides in the tournament. There seems to be a chink in their batting armor as they have depended heavily on the Prince of Indian cricket to do the bulk of their scoring with the others failing to find consistency. Their bowling is of the highest quality though and can devastate any batting lineup on their day so it will interesting to see whether they can get the better of a strong Mumbai outfit.

Mumbai have made it a habit to find themselves in a precarious situation early in their campaign before building momentum and going on a winning run. They have managed to do the same this time as well as they sealed qualification into the playoffs on the final day of the group stages and demolished an under-par Lucknow side in the Eliminator. They now find themselves inches away from the finish line as they hunt for their sixth title. This is a team that has always been renowned for their batting talent and big hitters which they have managed to maintain in this edition as well. Their bowling looked a tad bit weak initially, but as they so often do, they have managed to dig out some exceptional talents who have stepped up to the challenge. They will want to put in another team performance in this fixture as they look to set up a date with their long-time rivals Chennai in yet another final.

Hello, and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen to our coverage of Qualifier 2 in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League as we are now just one game away from the grand finale which everyone has been so eagerly awaiting. We are at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as we have a blockbuster tie in store that will definitely leave us at the edge of our seats. The reigning champions will have the advantage of playing this knockout game in home conditions against the five-time winners Mumbai. It has been one win each for both teams against each other so far in this season as they have managed to show their superiority in home conditions which could probably give Gujarat the extra edge in this game. Neither side will want to be eliminated having reached this far in the competition and we anticipate this to be a fiery contest.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2023 Indian T20 League is coming to an end and there are only two more games left. Chennai became the first finalists of the season by defeating Gujarat in Qualifier 1 and then Mumbai trumped Lucknow in the Eliminator to qualify for Qualifier 2. Now, it is time for Qualifier 2 as reigning champions Gujarat lock horns with Mumbai at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in a high-octane clash with the winner going through to the grand finale. Two teams who have both tasted glory with Gujarat lifting the title in their rookie season and Mumbai being the most decorated side in the competition with five titles to their name. The sides have already met twice in the group stages where they each won at their home ground by batting first and scoring in excess of 200 runs. Currently, Mumbai do have momentum as they finished the group stage on a high and outmuscled Lucknow by 81 runs in the Eliminator game. Gujarat do have probably the most-balanced side and will take confidence in the fact that they will be playing in front of a jam-packed home crowd. Gujarat set the tournament ablaze once again by finishing top of the league table but faltered against a Chennai side that was playing at home in Qualifier 1 and Gujarat simply crumbled under pressure. They do have the likes of Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya in the batting order but the form of David Miller is a bit of a worry. On the bowling front, the trio of Mohammad Shami, Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma has simply been sensational and they can turn the game on its head anytime. Coming to Mumbai, they have a good mixture of youth and experience and with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green finding form with the bat at the right time, their batting seems really solid. Their opening pair has also got them off to quick starts and with the likes of Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera and Tim David in the middle order, they can easily score runs at will. The bowling has certainly been their weaker suit but with Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla being consistent wicket-takers and Akash Madhwal emerging as a fantastic death bowler, they do have enough options to make a dent in that Gujarat lineup. The pitch in Ahmedabad will most certainly favour the batters which Mumbai will be happy with but that also means that the team that bowls and fields better will have more of an edge. Can the reigning champions make it through to back-to-back finals? Or will Mumbai rise to the challenge and make it an 'El Classico' in the final? We shall find out.
