That is it from this game and it is Gujarat who are guaranteed a top-two with this win. The action in the 2023 Indian T20 League continues on Tuesday, the 16th of May with another vital clash on the cards. Lucknow go up against Mumbai at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow as both sides look to stamp their authority in the top four of the points table. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but our build-up will begin a lot sooner. Cheers!

Shubman Gill (101 runs off 58 balls) is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his superb century. Gill starts by saying that it is quite pleasing as he made his debut against Hyderabad and now to get his first hundred against them as well feels like it has come full circle. Adds that he isn't the kind of person who dwells much on his last performance and focuses on the match at hand. Mentions that the most satisfying shot was the six he hit off Abhishek Sharma as they are childhood friends and it was nice to get one over him.

The Gujarat skipper, Hardik Pandya says he is very proud of the boys as they managed to qualify for the playoffs for a second year in a row. Adds that the team has played brilliantly and stepped up to the challenges. Mentions that the focus was to keep it tight within the group. Shares that all the players did their job and that is the reason for our success. Closes by saying that bowlers are close to his heart and he will always be a bowler’s captain to give them the due credit they deserve.

The Presentation ceremony...

One of the standouts with the ball for Gujarat, Mohammad Shami is down for a quick chat. Shami says that right from the start his job at Gujarat has been to bowl well in the Powerplay and looks to bowl tight lines. Adds that he simply tries to bowl in good areas and at the team meets, they always discuss about bowling well with the new ball. Mentions that the last game they played against Delhi, this wicket was similar to that one. Says that the variety they have in the middle overs always helps the side to win more games.

Aiden Markram, the captain of Hyderabad says that they believed that they were in the game at the halfway mark but losing 4 wickets in the Powerplay did not help. Adds that they did not get the swing as expected in the first innings. Mentions that they got better deep into the innings with the ball and Bhuvneshwar Kumar showed the way for them. Mentions that Heinrich Klaasen has got great power and timing but the rest of the batters have not assisted him. Shares that they will be playing for pride and hopes to give a few opportunities to the young players. Closes by saying that it was important to break the partnership and Bhuvneshwar Kumar along with T Natarajan did the job for them but it wasn’t their day tonight.

Earlier in the game, it was Aiden Markram who put Gujarat into bat and it brought Hyderabad early success too as Bhuvneshwar Kumar got rid of Wriddhiman Saha in the very first over. It was a completely different ball game after that though as Shubman Gill just kept on finding the fence and Sai Sudharsan supported him really well. The pair put on 147 runs for the second wicket before Sudharsan got out and that allowed Hyderabad to pick up wickets in a heap. Gill kept going and went on to score a brilliant ton but couldn't press on. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled wonderfully at the death and picked up a well-deserved five-wicket haul to keep Gujarat to 189 when at one point they seemed to be heading toward the 210-220 run mark. Coming to the chase, it was pretty much dominated by Gujarat barring a fighting knock by Heinrich Klaasen.

This loss just sums up Hyderabad's whole season. Just like the last game, they let all the momentum slip and simply imploded with the bat in this game. Having done really well with the ball in the backend of the first innings, the Hyderabad openers walked back early to the hut and from thereon, it was all gloomy for them. At 59/7, it all seemed to be over for them but then Heinrich Klaasen, probably their only consistent player throughout the tournament stepped up yet again. and he along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar put on a 68-run stand with Klaasen doing most of the heavy lifting. Klaasen got out for 64 with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mayank Markande playing decent cameos but it just wasn't anywhere enough to get them the win.

Having lost a lot of momentum with the bat in the final stages of the first innings, Gujarat were able to regain that momentum as Mohammad Shami picked up a wicket in the very first over. Yash Dayal then followed it up with a wicket of his own and soon Gujarat were all over the opponent. Shami picked up three wickets inside the Powerplay and Mohit Sharma picked up a couple of wickets to have the opposition struggling at 59/7 in 9 overs. The spinners however couldn't pick up wickets in the middle phase. Shami came back on to pick up his fourth and then Sharma too came back at the death to end up with four wickets and Gujarat cruised to victory.

GUJARAT ARE THROUGH TO THE PLAYOFFS! We finally have the first confirmed team in the 2023 Indian T20 League that is heading into the next phase of the competition and it is the reigning champions themselves. It was a comfortable victory in the end but Gujarat let it slip a bit in the middle phase and will be delighted to get over the line comfortably in the end.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and the players of Gujarat take their place on the field. Anmolpreet Singh and Abhishek Sharma are the openers for Hyderabad. Gujarat bring on Yash Dayal as the Impact Player and he replaces Shubman Gill. Mohammad Shami will get things going with the ball here.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the target for Hyderabad is 189 which is certainly gettable on this deck. Will they be able to chase it and get their fifth win this season or will Rashid Khan and company put their hand up and defend this total? We shall find out together. Stay tuned as the second essay begins shortly.

The man of the moment for Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is down for a quick chat. He says that they have done well to pull back things and adds that the wicket is definitely good for batting. Mentions that first over the ball swung but it didn't in the second over and says that the wicket wasn't slow but the slower ball was effective in the last over. Adds that the batters have a good shot at getting the job done. Ends by saying that the batters are very powerful and you need to use the boundaries as a bowler and reckons the opposition is 10 runs short.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the Hyderabad bowlers with excellent figures of 5 for 30 while Marco Jansen, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and T Natarajan picked up a wicket each. Hyderabad were poor with the ball and in the field till the 15th over but picked up a flurry of wickets at the backend to come back nicely and end the innings on a high.

A fine hundred from Shubman Gill gets Gujarat to 188 for 9 in their 20 overs. Having put into bat first, Gujarat lost Wriddhiman Saha for a duck early in the first over. Sai Sudharsan came in and batted fluently with Gill. The duo added 147 for the second wicket and laid an excellent foundation for their side. Sudharsan was dismissed in the 15th over for 47 but Gill carried on and made a sublime century. He departed in the final over for 101. The lower-order batters played small cameos and got Gujarat to an outstanding total.

BYE! Ends well does Bhuvneshwar Kumar! Slower again, full and wide, Mohit Sharma also swings and misses. The batters scamper through for a bye as Heinrich Klaasen throws the ball back to the bowler. Mohit Sharma is the last man in for Gujarat.

19.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! A fourth wicket in the over and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picks up a sensational five-wicket haul. Kumar bangs it in a bit and bowls it over the off stump, Mohammad Shami backs away and frees his arms before lofting it straight back over the bowler's head. Marco Jansen from long on runs around to his left and takes a good catch just inside the ropes. Another golden duck as Shami departs first ball.

19.41

Slower and shorter outside off, Dasun Shanaka mistimes the lofted shot over the cover region and ust for a single.

Mohammad Shami is the new man in.

19.3W

OUT! RUN OUT! Bhuvneshwar Kumar doesn't get the hat-trick to his name but it will be a team hat-trick for Hyderabad. Slower one, it is the leg-cutter, full and wide outside off yet again. Noor Ahmad swings and misses and Dasun Shanaka calls him for a bye. Heinrich Klaasen picks up the ball and lobs it back to the bowler and Bhuvneshwar Kumar throws it back onto the stumps at the bowler's end. Noor is well short.

Noor Ahmad walks out to face the hat-trick ball. Also, Hyderabad bring on Anmolpreet Singh as the Impact Player.

19.2W

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Two in two for Bhuvneshwar Kumar! Kumar goes full and wide again and pushes this one even wider. Rashid Khan gets right across the stumps and throws the kitchen sink at it. The ball takes a thick outside edge and goes to the right of the keeper. Heinrich Klaasen takes a comfortable catch behind the sticks. After the heroics of the last match, Rashid walks back for a golden duck now.

The ball gets sliced up high toward mid off and Marco Jansen comes in from the deep to take a solid catch.

17.22

Excellent fielding in the deep. This is full and angling in, Rahul Tewatia advances and converts it into a full toss before heaving it well wide of long on. Abdul Samad speeds to his left and dives in to save a couple of runs for his side.

Hardik Pandya, the captain of Gujarat says that the lavender jersey is a special gesture to show their support for cancer awareness and general well-being. Adds that it is very important to play good cricket and you have to turn up to every game but the group is quite relaxed. Mentions that when they started this season, they knew it would be trickier than last season and they knew they had to play their best cricket to get ahead. Says that they would have fielded as well and it is a fresh wicket but overall it will play decently throughout the night. Informs that they have a couple of forced changes with Vijay Shankar going out and Sai Sudharsan comes in for him with Dasun Shanaka is all set to make his debut.

Hyderabad's skipper Aiden Markram says they will bowl first. Adds that there is moisture on the surface and wants to maximize it. Says that they need to step up and show how good they are as a team. Shares that he wants the guys to express themselves and will be good for them if a couple of the players turn up. Adds that they want to do well in the last few games and see how it goes from thereon. Informs that there is one change, Marco Jansen comes in for Glenn Phillips.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, have had a poor season so far. They are ninth on the table with 4 wins and 7 losses. They batted well in their last game against Lucknow and posted over 180 on the back of excellent knocks from Heinrich Klaasen and Abdul Samad. Stay tuned as we bring the toss and other updates shortly.

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Match 62 in the 2023 Indian T20 League. Gujarat are hosting Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gujarat are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 8 wins in their 12 games. Shubman Gill has been brilliant for them with 475 runs so far this season. The likes of Wriddhiman Saha, Hardik Pandya, Vijay Shankar, and David Miller scored important runs and contributed to their team's success. Rashid Khan is leading the wickets tally with 23 scalps so far and played an outstanding knock in their previous game against Mumbai. The Hardik Pandya-led side will hope to get back to winning way after losing in their encounter against Mumbai and seal a top-two finish.

... MATCH DAY ...

We head into the final week of the group stage action in the 2023 Indian T20 League and to kick things off in Match number 62, it is Gujarat going up against Hyderabad in Ahmedabad. The hosts, Gujarat are very high on the table and a win in this game will all but guarantee a top-two finish in the group stage which is vital heading into the playoffs. They come up against a Hyderabad side that is out of sorts and low on confidence due to the lack of wins. Both teams however suffered defeat in their last games but the one suffered by Hyderabad was certainly more difficult to digest for their squad. Gujarat are the reigning champions and have played like one as well and will now look to make sure they head into the playoff phase with a string of wins. The opening pair of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill has been prolific yet again but the middle order has been a real positive for them. With Hardik Pandya blowing hot and cold with the bat, the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Vijay Shankar and even Abhinav Manohar have put in valuable performances. The bowling has remained a strong suit for them with Mohammad Shami and Rashid Khan amongst the leading wicket-takers in the competition and Rashid has been no slouch with the bat either, hitting 10 maximums in the last game against Mumbai. The addition of Noor Ahmad and Mohit Sharma has only bolstered their attack even further. On the other hand, everything has gone wrong for Hyderabad as they have chopped and changed the opening pair almost every game and skipper Aiden Markram also hasn't been able to lead from the front with the bat. Only Heinrich Klaasen has shown some consistency with their domestic batters faring below par all season. The bowling has been decent from them but still, the lack of wickets from experienced bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan has also cost them. On paper, they do have a squad that seems very well-balanced but in reality there just hasn't been any cohesiveness. All of Hyderabad's wins though have come away from home and they will now look to play freely and halt Gujarat's charge for a top-two finish for the time being. All in all, Gujarat look likely to get the win but it can go either way. Who are you backing?
