Commentary

Right then, a commanding all-round performance from Ireland sees them take the lead in this three-match ODI series and this will surely give them a huge boost in confidence. As for West Indies, they were thoroughly outplayed and will need to regroup quickly if they are to force a decider. The second ODI is set to be played at the same venue on Friday, 23rd May. The first ball will be bowled at 9.45 am GMT, but be sure to join us early for all the build-up. See you then!

Andy Balbirnie is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant ton. He says they were itching to get into the series and there were a few injuries coming into the series, but they did well. He congratulates Paul Stirling on 10,000 international runs and he says none of them knew it before the game. Adds that he has been a superb player for Ireland over the years and this amount of runs speaks for itself. Shares that his role is to bat as deep as possible and the other batters contributed really well. He says this win sets up the series nicely as both teams now know the conditions well and the competition will only get intense from here on.

The skipper of Ireland, Paul Stirling says that they did not put a foot wrong and he is absolutely delighted with the performance. Mentions that all debutants played brilliantly and it's a great thing for Irish cricket to see the depth of the talent out here. Talking about his milestone of 10,000 international runs, he says that he didn't have any idea about that and he is delighted to get it. Adds that it was something that he had dreamt of as a kid, but as a professional cricketer, you can't dwell too much on it. Says that it was a typical Andy Balbirnie innings as he saw off the new ball and batted throughout the innings and the way Lorcan Tucker and Harry Tector came in was pretty special. Adds that 300 was pretty much chaseable but the opening spell from Barry McCarthy and Thomas Mayes was brilliant.

The captain of West Indies, Shai Hope says his team struggled to counter the new ball and this is something they need to get right in the next game. Mentions that Ireland played well and his team needed to show some more intent, especially in the first Powerplay. Feels if his team can have a decent first Powerplay they are going to win more often and given the power his team has at the back end, he is confident of them chasing down any total.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier, after West Indies opted to bowl first, Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie weathered the early storm and laid a solid platform with a 109-run opening partnership. Balbirnie, dropped on 65, made the most of the reprieve as he shifted gears to convert his fifty into a commanding century. Contributions from Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker kept the momentum going but the final flourish never quite came as West Indies pulled things back at the death to restrict Ireland to 303.

What followed was a gritty stand between Roston Chase and Matthew Forde, with the duo growing in confidence as the innings progressed and the runs began to flow. However, just when the pair were beginning to look settled, an inspired bowling change saw George Dockrell break the stand by dismissing Chase. From there, the tail folded in a hurry. Barry McCarthy was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland with 4 wickets.

It was a seam bowling masterclass from Ireland in defence of a total that, at the halfway mark, felt slightly underwhelming. Barry McCarthy led the charge with a fiery opening spell, and the rest of the attack followed suit to heap misery on the visitors. A combination of relentless seam bowling and some questionable shot selection saw West Indies slump to 31 for 5 inside the first 10 overs. Justin Greaves' counter-attack was short-lived as the visitors slipped to 71/6.

A famous win for Ireland in Dublin, one that puts them ahead in the series. Believe it or not, this is the third straight win for Ireland in the format against West Indies. For the visitors, it’s been a forgettable start to their tour of this part of the world. A day where, after winning the toss, very little went their way.

OUT! CAUGHT! That will be the end of the game! Ireland are jubilant! They win this game by 124 runs. Barry McCarthy finishes off with a four-fer. Short ball on middle, Matthew Forde looks to go big as he goes for the pull shot. The ball rises on him as it takes the top edge and goes high in the air. Josh Little from mid on runs forward and settles under this skier and gobbles it up.

Commentary

All in readiness for the chase to get underway. Paul Stirling and Co. head out to the centre. It will be Brandon King and Evin Lewis to open the innings for West Indies. Barry McCarthy will kickstart proceedings with the new ball.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, it will surely not be easy chase for Windies batters, and the Irish will fancy themselves to defend this. Do join us for the 2nd innings in sometime.

Windies bowlers didn’t have it easy, as apart from the new ball, there wasn’t much help from the wicket. They will feel a touch unlucky as there were quite a few deliveries that went past the bat of the openers in the first 10 overs. Alzarri Joseph and Matthew Forde were the pick of the bowlers for them as both of them bowled well in the first Powerplay as well as the death, finishing with two and three wickets respectively.

Balbirnie eventually fell in the 44th over, and one felt, Windies could restrict the Irish batters under 300, but Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker had other ideas as they put on a quick 37-run stand in just 25 balls. Tector in that process also completed his 50.  At 286/3, one felt 320 was easily on the cards but a bit of a late comeback from Windies bowlers saw them restrict Ireland to 303.

Ireland have put on 303 and they might just feel they are 10-15 runs short. The openers got them off to a good start as they put on 109 runs for the first wicket. Both Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie completed their half centuries before an inspired bowling change got the better of Stirling for 54. Balbirnie, though, continued to bat in a fluent manner, as he notched up his 9th ODI hundred. The debutant Cade Carmichael had a brief stay at the crease as he couldn’t really get going.

Brandon comes back in to complete the catch. The third umpire is called into action and the replays confirm that it was a clean effort from King. Thomas Mayes is the new batter.

DRINKS BREAK! West Indies are staging a fightback through Roston Chase and Matthew Forde. The required run rate isn’t posing much of a problem, but it’s the wickets column that remains a cause for concern. The pair will do well to stay in the moment and take it one over at a time. Ireland, meanwhile, will look to regroup during this break and may opt to bring pace back from both ends in search of a breakthrough. Paul Stirling has persisted with spin from one end, but there’s a change in bowling as George Dockrell comes on.

The sun is shining in all its glory and we are all set to get going. A decent turnout for a Wednesday morning and more should come in as the day progresses. Shai Hope and his men stride out to the centre. They are followed by the two experienced Irish openers, Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie. Matthew Forde will open the attack for the tourists. Forde to Andy. Two slips in place. Away we go!

We are moments away from the first ball, but before that, Paul Stirling and Shai Hope will lead their respective sides out for the national anthems. It will be the anthem of West Indies first, followed by the national anthem of Ireland.

The West Indies, led by Shai Hope, are riding high on confidence as they travel to Ireland after winning successive home series against England and Bangladesh last year. Alongside the in-form Keacy Carty, the West Indies' batting lineup includes seasoned players like Brandon King and Evin Lewis. After missing the Bangladesh series in December 2024, Matthew Forde and Shamar Joseph are back. With eight wickets from three games during the England series, Matthew Forde led the West Indies in the wicket-taking chart.

Ireland, led by Paul Stirling, are heading into this series after 2-1 ODI series defeats to South Africa and Zimbabwe. The onus will be on the skipper, Paul Stirling, to lead from the front as they take on the West Indies. Bowling all-rounder Mark Adair will miss the ODI series since he has not fully recovered from a knee injury he sustained during the Zimbabwe series, while Ireland has called up the uncapped batter Cade Carmichael, seam bowlers Thomas Mayes, and Liam McCarthy for the West Indies series.

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all! A fascinating three-match ODI series between Ireland and the West Indies at Clontarf Cricket Club in Dublin is in store for cricket fans. With both Ireland and the West Indies aiming for a direct qualification to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, this series is sure to deliver thrilling action and plenty of memorable moments.

... MATCH DAY ...

The lively Caribbean vibes, full of energy and rhythm, meet the deep-rooted traditions and sporting passion of Ireland as the West Indies land in Dublin for a three-match ODI series at Clontarf Cricket Club. While these two teams don’t share a long-standing rivalry, their past matches have always been exciting and unpredictable. Ireland have shown that they can pull off surprises, like their impressive 2-1 ODI series win in the Caribbean in January 2022, capped off with a memorable win in Kingston. Also, they registered another win against the West Indies very convincingly in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Hobart. Those victories remind us that this series could be just as entertaining. All three ODIs will be played in Dublin, and they hold major importance for the West Indies, who are pushing for direct qualification to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. They're currently ninth in the ICC ODI rankings, and their recent results have been encouraging. Under the leadership of new coach Daren Sammy and captain Shai Hope, they finished 2024 strong with series wins over Bangladesh and England at home. This is the first time in about six years that, West Indies have come to Ireland for an ODI series. To boost their chances, they've added former Irish all-rounder Kevin O'Brien to their coaching team for this series, hoping his knowledge of local conditions will help. However, they’ll be without big-hitter Shimron Hetmyer, who’s busy with the IPL. On the bright side, they have added exciting young talent Jewel Andrew. Also, another good news for WI is that their pace bowlers Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde are back, who missed the Bangladesh series due to their respective injuries. The batting lineup of the West Indies has experienced players like Brandon King and Evin Lewis, with the in-form Keacy Carty. Another player to watch in this series is Amir Jangoo, who had a dream debut against Bangladesh. He scored a century on debut and became the first West Indian to do so in 46 years, as he played a key role in their successful chase of 322. The bowling attack will be led by Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales, with support from Justin Greaves, Gudakesh Motie, and Romario Shepherd. This gives Captain Hope a solid mix of pace and spin options. This West Indies side looks balanced and confident, and they’ll be keen to get revenge for their last ODI series loss to Ireland. For Ireland, this home series is a chance to challenge a motivated West Indies team. The selectors and team management have given opportunities to three uncapped players, fast bowlers Thomas Mayes and Liam McCarthy, batter Cade Carmichael, and meanwhile they haven’t included Gavin Hoey, Graham Hume, and Morgan Topping in the squad, who played against Zimbabwe in their last series, where Ireland lost 2-1. Unfortunately, they've had to deal with late injuries, as the experienced all-rounder Curtis Campher has been ruled out because of his broken finger, and fast bowler Craig Young pulled a hamstring during a domestic game. Both are now out of the series, but Ireland have announced Stephen Doheny and Jordan Neill as the replacements. Paul Stirling will lead the team during the series. Even with these injury issues, Ireland will look to draw strength from past wins against the West Indies and the energy of their home crowd at Clontarf. The earlier selections of Carmichael, Mayes, and McCarthy showed the team’s interest in giving chances to new talent. Carmichael has done well in domestic List A games, and Mayes performed impressively in the recent tri-series against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. With Neill and Doheny now joining in, they’ll have a chance to prove themselves on the big stage. Ireland’s bowling will likely revolve around Josh Little, Matthew Humphreys, Andy McBrine, and Barry McCarthy, with newcomer Neill adding extra depth. As for the conditions in Dublin, the pitch at Clontarf Cricket Club is generally known to offer a good balance between bat and ball. Early on, there might be some help for seamers due to moisture, but the surface tends to settle as the match goes on, allowing batters to play their shots. The weather forecast suggests a cool start with little chance of rain initially, but rain could arrive later and possibly affect the game. That means the captains will need to make smart decisions based on the overhead conditions. All in all, this is shaping up to be a close and entertaining series. So, who’s your pick for the win?
