Right then, that is it from the first ODI where New Zealand have absolutely dismantled Sri Lanka and will be looking to finish them off in the next game. However, Sri Lanka will not go down without a fight which makes the second ODI even more interesting. That match will be played on 28th Match, Thursday at the Hagley Oval and the first ball will be bowled at 6.30 am IST (1 am GMT), but as you know you can join us earlier for the build-up. Until then, Goodbye and Cheers!

Henry Shipley is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning five-wicket haul.

Earlier in the game, after being put to bat first, New Zealand posted a decent total on the board thanks to a half-centry from Finn Allen and good contribution from Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra who missed out on his fifty by just a run. Chamika Karunaratne was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka who took four wickets while others supported him well too. In reply, Sri Lanka could not get going at all and were bundled out for just 76 runs which means that they have to win the remaining two games to keep their direct qualification hopes for the World Cup alive.

Sri Lanka got off to the worse possible start as they lost one of their openers, Nuwanidu Fernando to a disastrous run-out. There is a saying that if you lose an opener to a run-out things starts to go downhill and Lanka found that out in a hard way. Their batters never look like settling and everyone struggled against this fiery and young Kiwi attack. Angelo Mathews was the highest scorer with 18 runs which says a lot about this performance. New Zealand were all over the Lankans right from the start and to win like this with key players missing takes some courage and quality. The star of the show was Henry Shipley who took a five-wicket-haul and registered his career best (7-0-31-5) in ODIs. Daryl Mitchell and Blair Tickner picked up couple of wickets each as well. This was a brilliant show from them and they will now want to seal the series in the next game itself while the visitors will need to re-visit their plans and tactics to comeback harder in the next match.

What an emphatic victory for New Zealand! The Kiwis have absolutely thrashed Sri Lanka here by 198 runs to take an early lead in this ODI series. They have registered their 50th ODI win over the Lankans in the 100th match and what a way to do so as well.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! Pathum Nissanka is accompanied by Nuwanidu Fernando in the middle. Matt Henry will start the proceedings.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, New Zealand have posted a competitive total on the board and will have to bowl really well to defend it. Sri Lanka knows that they have done the hard work with the ball and just has to back that up with the bat and they will take a 1-0 lead in the series. Will they be able to do it? Or will the Kiwis stop them? We will find out soon. Join us in a bit for the run chase.

Finn Allen is up for a quick chat. He says that with the base that they hadthey were expecting a lot more but looking at the wicket we are happy with this score. He adds that the track certainly has enough for the bowlers as the tracking is helping the seamers and we have a solid total on the board so the team feels they could defend it.

For Sri Lanka, Chamika Karunaratne was the best bowler as he scalped 4 wickets at an economy below 4 and was well helped by Lahiru and Kasun as they scalped a couple each and also Dilshan Madushanka and Dasun Shanaka who took a wicket each. Whenever a partnership looked like stepping up on the paddle, Lankan bowlers broke through it. Shanaka was fantastic with his bowling changes and field settings. The run chase would be really interesting as the pitch is helpful for the bowlers who will be consistent in grouping while the batters would love their time in the middle as well.

After being asked to bat first the Kiwis started sensationally with debutant Chad Bowes and Finn Allen taking the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers. The introduction of Lahiru Kumara into the attack proved vital for Dasun Shanaka as he removed Chad Bowes in his very first over. Sri Lankan bowlers kept taking wickets on a regular basis and never let the Kiwis settle down. The batter did get a good start but couldn't capitalize and convert it into a big one. Finn Allen scored a half-century and debutant Rachin Ravindra was impressive as he fell just one short of his half-century.

Sri Lanka has done tremendously well to pull back things in their favor by picking up wickets at regular intervals. From 147/3 after the 26th over to restricting the Kiwis to a score of 274 runs the visitors have helped themselves massively in the first ODI game of this series.

49.3W

OUT! TAKEN! That is it then! Kasun Rajitha pitches this up, on middle, Ish Sodhi makes room and swings across the line, but gets a top edge as the ball goes high in the air, Kusal Mendis calls for it and runs forward to his left and pouches it safely with the gloves on. New Zealand have been bowled out for 274!

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Nuwanidu Fernando, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka (C), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara, Dilshan Madushanka.

TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and they have elected to BOWL first.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand is coming into this game hoping to get back to the winning ways. The team is led by Dasun Shanaka and is very well balanced as they have a mixture of youth along with experienced heads all around. Wanindu Hasaranga would be leading the bowling department while Kusal Mendis and youngster Pathum Nissanka would be crucial in giving them good starts up top. This game would be a good opportunity for them to rack up some crucial Super League points for direct qualification in the World Cup. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

Tom Latham-led New Zealand is coming into this game after beating Sri Lanka by 2-0 in the two-match Test series. The Kiwis are coming into this game without many key players including Kane Williamson and Tim Southee who are missing due to IPL duties. Latham did confirm that Rachin Ravindra and Chad Bowes would be getting their maiden ODI caps in this match. This game would be a perfect preparation for the Kiwis to have a look at their bench strength with the World Cup lurking on the horizon.

Hello and a very warm welcome to all our viewers. New Zealand takes on Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series at Eden Park, Auckland. The game promises to be a cracker as both sides will fight hard to take an early lead in the series

... MATCH DAY ...

Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand now shifts to the second phase with the hosts claiming a 2-0 whitewash in the Test series over the visiting islanders. Sri Lanka were in a good position to win the first match but a last-ball defeat took the winds out of their sails and they suffered an inning defeat in the second Test match. They have an excellent opportunity to reverse their fortunes in the three-match ODI series and with Super League points for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup up for grabs, this contest will have an extra bite to it. New Zealand have managed to secure automatic qualification for the mega event but Sri Lanka find themselves out of the top eight and will need to win this series convincingly to avoid the grind of playing the qualifying round. We focus our attention on the first ODI which will be played at Eden Park in Auckland before the caravan moves to Christchurch and the series finale will be played at Hamilton. Both teams come into this series on the back of 3-0 losses against India away from home and will want to get some winning momentum in their preparations for the World Cup. Before the India series, New Zealand were in good form in 50-over cricket but will be missing a few key players that have been released to participate in the Indian T20 League. With Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Devon Conway, and Mitchell Santner traveling to India, Tom Latham has been appointed as the captain and he will have Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, and Glenn Phillips at his disposal only for this game before they too leave for their franchise commitments. Michael Bracewell was initially included in the squad but will miss out as well and is replaced by Rachin Ravindra. Tom Blundell and Will Young have been called back into the squad with Chad Bowes and Ben Lister the two uncapped players given an opportunity on the international stage. Ben Lister will only join the team after the first ODI along with Mark Chapman and Henry Nicholls who will be providing cover for the departing players. Daryl Mitchell, Matt Henry, Blair Tickner, Henry Shipley, and Ish Sodhi retain their place in the squad. Sri Lanka will be led by Dasun Shanaka and he will want to take this series very seriously but will be without Avishka Fernando, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Ashen Bandara, Nuwan Thushara, and Jeffrey Vandersay from the side that toured India. The visitors have brought back Angelo Mathews into the setup as they look to bring some experience into a side that recently suffered a morale-dropping defeat against Afghanistan. Despite the absentees, Sri Lanka have most of their regular white-ball players at their disposal with Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Nuwanidu Fernando, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Chamika Karunaratne all a part of the batting unit. Chamika Karunaratne's medium pace will also be useful in these conditions as he forms a part of a well-equipped pace bowling contingent comprising Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka, Lahiru Kumara, Pramod Madushan, and Matheesha Pathirana who could make his ODI debut along with yet another uncapped player Sahan Arachchige. Wanindu Hasaranga, Mahesh Theekshana, and Dunith Wellalage provide the team with spin-bowling options but with overcast conditions throughout the day, the venue may suit the pace bowlers more. Which of these two teams will start the series with a win? We will find out soon.
