That is it from this game and it seems that the teams are so evenly matched that we are now seeing a trend of last-ball or last-over finishes regularly in the Indian T20 League, 2023 and it is riveting to watch. The action will continue on Friday, the 14th of April with high-on-confidence Kolkata taking on a resurgent Hyderabad team at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but as usual, our build-up will begin much sooner. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Mohit Sharma is the Player of the Match for taking two wickets for 18 runs in his four overs in his first game for Gujarat. He says that he did not think too much and since he has played in Mohali before, he knew that the pitch could play slow. Mentions that he wanted to use the conditions and try bowling variations which he would discuss with Hardik Pandya before executing the plans. Claims that there is no keyword he uses but tries to give his 100 per cent in training and studying the various matchups which allows them to bowl according to the plans for different batters. Explain that there were preparations done beforehand and he was already informed when he would bowl along with circumstances under which he could get the new ball. Ends by saying that the credit goes to the coaches and the roles have been assigned in advance.

Hardik Pandya, the skipper of Gujarat says that he wouldn't like to take the game this close and it is the beauty of this game that it is never over until it is over and they will go back to the drawing board. Adds that the kind of batting they have, they can take a few more risks in the middle overs. Mentions that the wicket was good but due to the hardness of the deck, the ball got a bit dried up and didn't come on as well as one would think. Goes on to applaud Mohit Sharma who made a stellar comeback and the way he bowled was brilliant. Reckons that they have had two close shaves and if this one had also gone against them then it would have stung and they will try to make amends and finish games off earlier.

The Presentation ceremony...

Shubman Gill, one of the stars with the bat for Gujarat is down for a chat. He shares that it is harder to hit sixes with the old ball. Explains that it was important for them to play the balls in the gap and run hard while putting loose deliveries to the boundary. He feels that he should have finished the match but Punjab and Rahul Tewatia is a good love story and it was apt that his boundary got them the win. Claims that in these kinds of games, there is pressure on both teams and they wanted to minimize the dot balls. Mentions that after the first inning got over they knew it was easier to score with the hard ball so they decided to go early. Informs that they lost momentum when Hardik Pandya got out and at that time they needed to rotate the strike. On Mohit Sharma, he says that when he was bowling in the nets he was looking really good, and with his slower deliveries and yorkers, he was a handful on this pitch.

Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of Punjab says that there were not enough runs on the board and the opposition got off to a good start so they need to rectify this going forward. Explains that whenever any team plays 56 dot balls, they will lose the game so they need to come up with plans and execute them. Claims that he is proud of the bowlers for taking the game right to the wire and the onus falls on the batters to give them something to bowl at. Mentions that Liam Livingstone came for training and pulled his muscle but feels he will be back in 3-4 days.

Earlier in the game, Hardik Pandya won the toss and had no hesitation in putting the opposition into batting first. This decision proved to be the correct one as the Gujarat bowlers were able to pick up early wickets in the Powerplay and that set the tone for the rest of the innings. As for Punjab, the openers failed but the middle order fought back decently. Matthew Short was going great guns but the rest of the pack was just a bit too slow till Shahrukh Khan struck a few lusty and important blows toward the fag end of the inning. Mohit Sharma who was playing in the league after not being a part of the tournament last season bowled a brilliant spell in which he picked up a couple of wickets and gave away very few runs as well. This meant that Gujarat restricted Punjab to a total of just 153 runs which on this ground is well below par. Coming to the chase, the Gujarat openers provided them with the perfect start but somehow Punjab managed to take the game into the final over only to end up on the losing side on the penultimate delivery.

Punjab will be gutted with the loss in the end but will be a tad disappointed with the overall performance as they didn't perform well with the bat yet again and the bowling in the Powerplay let them down as well. Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh were struck for early boundaries which put Punjab on the back foot but Arshdeep did get rid of a high-flying Wriddhiman Saha. After this, Harpreet Brar bowled a fine spell and slowly Punjab started to crawl back into the game. However, the opposition was always a few hits away from the win and they failed to pick up wickets at the death as well. But, all of a sudden, Arshdeep Singh bowled a fantastic 19th over which meant Sam Curran had an opportunity to defend 6 runs and he bowled a fabulous final over until the penultimate delivery and Punjab ended up on the losing side.

The target at hand wasn't a big one and Gujarat got off to a perfect start as well. Wriddhiman Saha took on the bowlers and Shubman Gill played a few delightful shots as they put on 48 quick runs before Saha was dismissed. Gill put on another steady stand with Sai Sudharsan but the scoring rate declined a bit. The skipper, Hardik Pandya couldn't get going but after he got out, Gill took matters into his own hands and found the fence at crucial times before notching up another half-century. David Miller supported him well and it looked like they were in control of things but it got really nervy in the final over with Gill back in the shed and Miller unable to find the fence. Rahul Tewatia though came out with nerves of steel and took his side to a memorable win.

What a cracker-jack of a game we have witnessed just now! Pure ecstasy on one side and heartbreak on the other. Take a bow Sam Curran but it is the 'Ice-man', Rahul Tewatia who has done it again for Gujarat and in some fine fashion as well. Punjab were down and out but all of a sudden they could feel the tide turning and the crowd got into it as well but Tewatia shattered those hopes in a single delivery.

19.54

FOUR! It is that man once again! Rahul Tewatia is as cool as a cucumber and finishes the game with very little fuss! Sam Curran goes full and outside the off stump. Rahul Tewatia steps across towards the off side and gets down on one knee. He paddles this over the short fine leg fielder and finds the boundary for four runs. We have yet another last-over finish and there is no end to this excitement! Gujarat win by 6 wickets!

19.41

Nails the yorker once again and in line with the stumps. David Miller looks to go hard into the leg side but gets an inside edge onto his pads. The ball rolls back towards the keeper and Rahul Tewatia is already almost at the striker's end. David Miller takes off and manages to reach the other end as Sam Curran opts to not throw the ball.

19.31

Bowls this on a yorker length and at the stumps. Rahul Tewatia digs this out towards long on and opens his account with a single.

Rahul Tewatia is the new man in for Gujarat. 6 needed off 4 balls now. Also, Shikhar Dhawan is off the field and Sam Curran is marching the troops here. The crowd is growing more and more impatient and we have a game on our hands.

19.2W

OUT! TIMBER! Sam Curran has dismantled the stumps and sent the crowd into hysteria! The game is still alive here as Shubman Gill departs after playing a good knock but is unable to take his team over the finish line. Sam Curran bowls this on a good length and in line with the stumps. Shubman Gill looks to go across the line but misses and watches his off stumpss get shattered. Gujarat lose their fourth wicket and still need 6 runs to win.

19.11

Sam Curran bowls this full and outside the off stump. David Miller knocks this hard towards cover and Rishi Dhawan pulls off an outstanding save to keep the game alive for Punjab.

Sam Curran to bowl the final over. Can he defend 6 runs?

Arshdeep Singh nails the yorker this time and gets it to reverse in the air into the batter. David Miller looks to dig this out but misses and the ball goes off the back leg towards short fine leg. They scamper across for a leg bye. Punjab opt for the review and UltraEdge shows there is no bat involved. Ball Tracking shows that this is hitting the pads outside the leg stump. David Miller survives and Gujarat need 7 runs in the last over.

Reviewed! A gem of a yorker from Arshdeep Singh and at this stage Punjab have to go for the review. It seemed to be angling down leg at first sight but the third umpire will have a look. Nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking confirms that the impact is outside the line of leg stump. NOT OUT comes up on the big screen.

18.51

Back to 'round the wicket and serves this full, outside the off pole. Shubman Gill eases this down to long off for a single. 8 runs needed in 7 balls.

18.41

18.30

Goes full and into the pads. David Miller looks to flick this into the leg side but gets an inside edge onto his pads and the ball rolls down the pitch.

18.22

Goes over the wicket to the southpaw and serves this full, outside off. David Miller strokes this towards wide long off and collects a couple of runs. A run-a-ball required now.

18.11

17.21

Bowls this on a good length and in line with the stumps. David Miller gets an inside edge into the leg side and sets off for a quick single.

Commentary

We are back for the second essay as the umpires make their way out to the middle. The Punjab players are in a huddle at the boundary line before they disperse and take their respective fielding positions. Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill stride out to the middle to open the inning for Gujarat. Rahul Chahar is the Impact Player for Punjab and comes on in place of Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Arshdeep Singh has the new ball in his hand and will begin proceedings. Let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, this should be a routine run chase for Gujarat but they will want to get off to a good start with their openers. They will want their top-order batters to set a nice platform and put them in a position from where their finishers can take over. Punjab still need to believe that they are in this game and they have a fighting total on the board. They will need to come out with positive intent and look for wickets early to set the tone for their game. Will they be able to pull off a remarkable defense? Or will this be a walk in the park for the reigning champions? We will find out shortly in the run chase.

Mohit Sharma has quick chat and he says that he was excited and was a bit nervous as well to make a comeback but also mentions that he has been playing regularly in the domestic circuit for the last 3 seasons. Adds that he had back surgery a few years back and not many people knew he was playing domestic cricket but was called up by the Gujarat franchise last season as a net bowler which really helped him. Mentions that it is all about the mindset and that being a net bowler isn't a bad thing as you get to bowl at world-class batters which he and the other net bowlers enjoyed it a lot as well.

Punjab got off to the worst possible start losing Prabhsimran Singh on the second delivery of the inning off the bowling of Mohammad Shami and Joshua Little dismissed Punjab's inform skipper Shikhar Dhawan inside the Powerplay. Matthew Short played a good counter-attacking cameo scoring 36 runs in 24 balls but was dismissed by a magical delivery from the magician Rashid Khan. Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Jitesh Sharma looked to rebuild the innings but lowered the scoring rate in the process and could not convert their starts. Sam Curran and Shahrukh Khan also added 20-run scores but in the end, they ill feel they are well short of a commanding total.

This has been a struggle for Punjab as they were never able to get any sort of momentum but a late charge has helped them cross the 150-run mark. A score of 153 should be under-par on a good batting surface and Gujarat will be silently confident of overcoming this target. This has been an outstanding bowling performance by the reigning champions as all the bowlers contributed with wickets. Mohit Sharma was by far the pick of the bowlers on his debut taking 2 wickets for 18 runs in his four overs while the other four chipped in with one each. They were good in the field as well as they kept it really tight and never allowed the opposition to get away with the scoring rate.

OUT! RUN OUT! Wriddhiman Saha with a piece of magic from behind the stumps and Gujarat finish things off with another wicket. Joshua Little comes from over the wicket and angles in a fuller delivery at the legs. Harpreet Brar backs away and looks to flick it leg side but gets beaten on the inside edge. The batters scamper through as the ball goes to the right of the keeper. Wriddhiman Saha is quick to latch on to it and quickly throws it back onto the stumps. The replays show that Rishi Dhawan is just short of his crease and it will be a wicket. Punjab finish with 153/8 on the board!

19.51

Fuller in length and outside off again, Rishi Dhawan drills it toward mid off and goes for the single. David Miller has a shy at the bowler's end but misses and Dhawan makes it through.

Rishi Dhawan makes his way out to the crease.

OUT! RUN OUT! They say never to run off a misfield and now we know why. Joshua Little bowls this full and outside the off pole, Shahrukh Khan backs away and hits it crisply toward wide mid off and sets off for the single. Hardik Pandya from mid off and David Miller from extra cover both go after the ball and clash a bit, ending up fumbling the ball. This prompts Shahrukh to retain strike and he goes for it. Miller though picks up the ball and fires in a quick throw at the keeper's end. Wriddhiman Saha whips off the bails and the replays confirm that Shahrukh is outside his crease.

19.41wd

WIDE! Full and wide of the off stump, spilled beyond the tramline and a wide is signaled.

19.31

Fullish length, angling into the legs, Harpreet Brar whips this one away past square leg and picks up a single.

19.26

SIX! BANG! Joshua Little serves this one right in the slot on off stump, Harpreet Brar hangs deep in his crease and whacks it right back over the bowler's head for a biggie. That went straight like an arrow.

19.11

Full and outside off, driven firmly to the right mid off for just a single. Hardik Pandya there dives and saves three runs.

Joshua Little will bowl the last over of the inning.

18.40

Back of the hand slower ball now, on a good length and outside off. Shahrukh Khan hits it hard but straight to extra cover. Mohit Sharma showing his full range of slower balls now.

18.31

Another slower one that is banged in, Harpreet Brar gets on top of the bounce and pulls it flat toward deep backward square leg for one.

18.20

Nails the pace-on yorker now outside off, Harpreet Brar reaches out and jams it toward cover-point.

Harpreet Brar walks out to the center.

18.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Mohit Sharma gets his second wicket of the game and Punjab lose their sixth! Sharma bowls an off-cutter and bangs it halfway down the track over the stumps. Sam Curran has to wait for it but takes it on and pulls it high toward the long mid-wicket boundary. Curran gets decent power behind it but just not enough. Shubman Gill is right on the ropes there and takes a solid catch. Top performance from Sharma so far.

Mohit Sharma to bowl his last over now. He has been great on his debut so far taking one wicket in his three overs and conceding just 12 runs.

17.51

Nice and full around middle, flicked away to deep mid-wicket for a run.

17.44

FOUR! Great adjustment! Sam Curran pre-meditates and shuffles past the leg stump. Mohammad Shami goes for the wide yorker and almost nails it. Curran manages to reach out and get it off the cue end of the willow into the third man fence for a boundary.

17.31

Full again around off, Shahrukh Khan stays deep in his crease and looks to get under it but thumps it on the bounce to Joshua Little at long off for only a single.

17.22

Very full and nailed at the toes, Shahrukh Khan gets his front leg out of the way and flicks it to the left of the man at deep square leg for a couple of runs. There is a check for a short run but the replays show that Sam Curran is absolutely fine.

17.11

Very full and angled into the legs from around the wicket. Sam Curran backs away and gets an inside edge off the pads toward short third man for a single.

They scamper across for a leg bye. Punjab opt for the review and UltraEdge shows there is no bat involved. Ball Tracking shows that this is hitting the pads outside the leg stump. Nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking confirms that the impact is outside the line of leg stump. NOT OUT comes up on the big screen.

Punjab though have done reasonably well to keep themselves in contention.

Strategic break! It has been all Gujarat in the middle overs and Punjab haven't been able to get a move on at all. Claims that they do want to learn from their mistakes but they are also happy with the good things that they have done.  Shares that it is good to be home and it always helps with the crowds behind them. Informs that they have a couple of changes to their playing XI.
