Right then, that is all we have from a high-scoring encounter here in Mohali. On Saturday, 29th of April, we have a double dose of action coming your way. First up, it will be Kolkata taking on Gujarat at Eden Gardens and that game will start at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT). The second game will be between Delhi and Hyderabad, starting at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Do join us for the build-up of both games. Cheers!

Marcus Stoinis is the Player of the Match for scoring 74 of 40 deliveries and chipping in with a wicket. He says that his finger is alright and they will get the scans later. Mentions that they were joking about how this wicket is compared to the wicket at home and wanted to capitalize on a good batting track. Admits that when he was batting with Ayush they never thought they will reach 250 but they played their shots freely and mentions that he is a very talented player. Informs that it is more about the circumstances and batting up the order allows him to see more balls but he also enjoys the responsibility of playing lower down the order and finishing games off. Adds that his trait is to shuffle through the batting order. Ends by saying that he was swinging a few balls in the nets and the bowling coach decided to try him up top but says that the home wickets suit him better where he can take the pace off.

KL Rahul, the skipper of Lucknow says that their 10 wins batting first out of 12 is against the T20 trend and adds that he can’t figure out one reason for it but he is very happy with it. Tells that every game in the second half becomes important and they wanted to do well in this game and adds that the break after the last game helped them and they were always clear about how they wanted to bat. Applauds his team’s batting and says that getting to 250 speaks highly of how they batted. States that familiarity with the conditions help but cricket is a game where things can change and one cannot be sure about the pitch. Says that the first 2-3 overs set the tone for them and credits Mayers for it. Tells that they pre-planned a bit and they had their plans. Mentions that they have power-hitters and they just try to use players according to the situation of the game and informs that the think-tank does most of the planning and he tries to understand what they are thinking!

Time for the Presentation now...

Nicholas Pooran is down for a quick chat. He says that he is very happy with the performance of the bowlers and is more happy about getting two important points. Adds that they knew that there is one shorter side on this ground and once they had controlled the powerplay, they tried to make batters hit on the bigger side of the ground. Mentions that he has not been successful in taking reviews in recent times and that’s why let one pass in this game. Informs that he tries not to do much wicketkeeping practice and adds that it is all about catching the ball with soft hands and keeping it simple. Signs off by saying that he will take 40-odd runs any day and that it is good to contribute to a team cause.

Shikhar Dhawan, the skipper of Punjab says that they gave away too many runs and paid the price for it. Admits that he could not contribute and explains that the ball did not come quickly enough so it went straight to the fielder. Adds that they were chasing a big score so he had to get going straight away. Claims that his strategy didn’t work and they played with a spinner less but it is a learning curve for him and he will look to come back stronger. Ends by saying that the Impact Player rule has been good but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Time for some interviews.

Punjab have a quality bowling attack but they were way below par in this game. The bowlers of the class of Rabada, Arshdeep Singh and Sam Curran bowled way too many loose deliveries and extras and Lucknow made them pay heavily. Rahul Chahar was the only one who bowled well and with the bat, it was Atharva Taide who impressed with his classy strokeplay. After losing two early wickets, the young batter from Vidarbha batted with intensity and scored 66 off 36 balls while other middle-order batters too played brisk knocks but the target of 258 was way too much for them in the end.

As mentioned before, the win for Lucknow was set up by their batters. Mayers started off the carnage and almost everyone who followed kept going as they went on to get the second-highest total in the history of the Indian T20 League. Lucknow were always favourites to win the game from thereon and KL Rahul went on to use 9 bowlers which shows the nature of the pitch here in Mohali and the kind of resources Lucknow have at their disposal. What helped Lucknow further is that they got Shikhar Dhawan in the first over and had wickets in the Powerplay with Punjab always behind the 8-ball. Bishnoi bowled brilliantly in the middle overs to pick up two wickets. Naveen-ul-Haq and Yash Thakur then executed their plans in the death and picked 7 wickets between them to seal a big win for Lucknow.

Lucknow have notched up an impressive win here! Punjab batters tried hard but when you have been handed a target of over 250 runs in a T20 game, then we all know who needs to take the blame here. Lucknow batters set up this win and their bowlers just needed to do the basics right which they eventually did. Lucknow, now move to the second spot with this comprehensive win.

19.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! Yash Thakur has a four-fer and a comprehensive win for the visitors! Yash Thakur bowls this really full and into the pads.  Shahrukh Khan goes for the flick into the leg side but hits it straight down the throat of the deep square leg fielder. Ravi Bishnoi keeps his concentration and holds onto the catch as Lucknow have bowled their opponents out here. The visitors have managed to exact revenge for their loss at home with a 56-run win and will now look to build on this result.

Commentary

We are back for the second essay as the umpires make their way out to the middle. The Lucknow players are in a huddle near the boundary line and this should be a pretty easy team talk.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, this is only the second time in the history of the Indian T20 League that 250 has been breached so Punjab will know that they have an uphill task at hand. That said it is not impossible and the wicket looks like a batting paradise so the home crowd will have some hope that their batters can pull off a miracle run chase. The return of Shikhar Dhawan will definitely boost their chances but will need a combined effort from their batting order. Lucknow just need to stick to the basics and they will be confident of getting over the line. Will this be a routine defense as we expect it to be? Or will Punjab pull off a massive surprise? We will find out shortly in the run chase.

Ayush Badoni is up for a chat and he says that he was waiting for an opportunity to bat at 3 for a long time and he is happy to get the opportunity finally. Mentions that he knew that it is a good wicket and adds that instructions were to just play the shots. Tells that they just wanted to play the ball on merit. Talks about his mindset and says that he was just blank out there and reacting to the ball.

The visitors were watchful in the first over but once Kyle Mayers got going, they looked unstoppable. KL Rahul could not make an impact and lost his wicket early but Ayush Badoni came out at number 3 to play the perfect supporting role to the marauding Kyle Mayers who reached his fifty in 20 delivers. Once the left-handed opener perished, Marcus Stoinis continued the good work and played some outstanding shots to not allow the hosts any time to breathe. Ayush Badoni scored 43 in 24 balls but his dismissal brought Nicholas Pooran to the middle who made his intent clear with three boundaries on his first three deliveries. Marcus Stoinis was dismissed on 72 in 40 deliveries and Nicholas Pooran made 45 in 19 balls with Deepak Hooda adding the finishing touches.

Lucknow have posted a mammoth total on the board! They have absolutely demolished the Punjab bowling with an exhibition of power hitting and put up 257 runs on the board which is the highest total of the 2023 Indian T20 League. They kept up the tempo all through the inning and will feel they have more than enough on the board. The Punjab bowlers lacked disciplined and gave away far too many loose deliveries with Rahul Chahar proving to be the only economical bowler. The rest went for well above 12.5 runs per over with Kagiso Rabada taking two wickets and Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone chipping in with one each. They will want to quickly forget this performance and hope their batters come to the party.

The batters meanwhile take a run and there is direct hit from Jitesh Sharma at the batter's end. However, Punjab take the DRS for a caught behind.

Strategic break! Lucknow have not allowed the momentum to fall all through this inning as every new batter has played his shots and kept the scoring rate right. They already have 200 runs on the board and are well on course to put up the highest score in this edition of the Indian T20 League. Punjab have been really poor with the ball giving far too many loose deliveries and have been punished for it. They will be hoping to try and pull things back slightly in the last 4 overs and take that momentum into the run chase.

We are all set to begin! The Punjab players are in the huddle and they disperse now to take their respective positions. KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers are the openers for Lucknow. Gurnoor Brar to start the proceedings with the ball on his debut. Here we go...

KL Rahul, the skipper of Lucknow says that his motivation remains the same wherever he plays and adds that he is familiar with the conditions in Punjab. He mentions that it looks like a good wicket and they need to analyze quickly and play well. States that dew is a  factor on this ground and that’s why teams opt to bowl first. Informs that they have the same team as they are batting first.

Shikhar Dhawan, the skipper of Punjab says that they will bowl first. Mentions that his shoulder is much better and pain-free. Claims that he is looking forward to playing the game and winning. Adds that he is quite happy with what has happened and they have seven games in hand so he is looking to win most of them and qualify easily. TOSS - The coin goes up in the air and lands in favour of Punjab. They have elected to BOWL first.

Lucknow are by far the most unpredictable side in the competition and we can never be certain which team turns up to play the match. They can be absolutely devastating on their day but at the same time, there are instances when they can falter and hand over the advantage to their opponents without any fight. It could be seen in their last encounter when they dominated proceedings for 36 overs but the lack of will cost them the game in the last four overs of the game. They will need to pick themselves up after that result and will want to turn their fortunes around immediately. They have a strong batting lineup but have been finding it difficult to maintain any sort of fluency, however, their bowlers have been up to the mark. Will they be able to correct their home loss in this game? Or will the hosts do a surprising double over their opponents? We will find out soon. Stay tuned for the toss and team updates.

Punjab are missing their regular captain Shikhar Shikhar Dhawan in the last few games but despite his absence, they have been able to register crucial wins under the leadership of Sam Curran. They are still plagued with inconsistency and will want to get a winning momentum going into the business end of the competition. They have lost their last two home fixtures with their only win in front of the home crowd coming in their opening match against Kolkata. They have managed to find heroes with the bat when required and in the absence of their star player, they will need these kinds of contributions from their inexperienced batting line-up. Their strength lies in their pace-bowling unit and a couple of homegrown spinners that have stuck to their task well.

Hello, and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen to our coverage of match number 38 in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League as Punjab host Lucknow at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali as we witness two teams separated by merely net run-rate battle it to out for crucial two points as they look to take forward some advantage going into their second half of games. On one hand, Punjab registered a comprehensive win against five-time champions Mumbai in their previous fixture while on the other hand, Lucknow suffered an agonizing loss against the reigning champions in their last match. Despite being well placed on the points table, both teams have shown frailty and it will be interesting which team is able to exploit their opponent's weakness.

... MATCH DAY ...

It's mid-season in the Indian T20 League 2023, and the points table is taking shape. The 38th game between Punjab and Lucknow at the PCA Stadium in Mohali will be important for both teams, who are on 8 points each. The former come here with a win against Mumbai and have their tails up. The latter went down against Gujarat in the last game which they should have won comfortably. Shikhar Dhawan could return for Punjab after missing a few games due to injury which will strengthen their batting. He will look to offer a good start along with Prabhsimran Singh. Matthew Short and Liam Livingstone must live up to their reputations after a string of low scores. Harpreet Singh has also shown good potential, while the lower middle order is in great form, and they will expect runs from Sam Curran, Shahrukh Khan, and Jitesh Sharma. Their bowling attack has been a bit hot and cold but Arshdeep Singh is in great form and will look to add to his tally of wickets, but he will also require support from Nathan Ellis and Rahul Chahar, and if Kagiso Rabada is fit, he could come good for them too. They will look to build a winning momentum and get another two points. Lucknow, on the other hand, will need to come into this game with a fresh mindset after a very disappointing loss in their last game. They will hope that Kyle Mayers continues to fire at the top order along with KL Rahul but the latter needs to increase his strike rate or else they could go down again. Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis are their power hitters but they haven't been consistent and that is a problem. They could also find a place for Quinton de Kock in the team who can add that extra flair to their batting order. Their bowlers have done well so far, as it was Mark Wood with his fiery pace in the first few matches and Naveen-ul-Haq also stepped up when he got the chance. Amit Mishra has used his experience really well and has built a good partnership with Ravi Bishnoi and Krunal Pandya. However, they will need their Indian pacers to contribute more to get the desired result.
