Commentary

Onto the big one - That wraps up the penultimate Group Stage fixture of the T20 World Cup. South Africa Women pick up two crucial points to keep their semifinal hopes firmly alive, while Bangladesh Women bow out of the tournament with a defeat but plenty of positives to take away. Now, all eyes turn to the blockbuster clash at Lord's, where Australia Women take on India Women with a semifinal spot on the line. The toss is done and India have elected to BAT first. A win for India seals qualification, but if they fall short, South Africa will book their place instead. Simply switch tabs and join us for all the action. See you there!

The victorious skipper of South Africa Women - Laura Wolvaardt admits it is not the way South Africa Women would have liked to finish the chase. While pleased with the excellent bowling effort, she feels the side should have restricted Bangladesh Women to around 100. She also credits Bangladesh's slow spin bowling for making the chase tricky. With their fate not in their own hands, she says the team will now be watching the next game closely and cheering on Australia Women.

The captain for Bangladesh Women - Nigar Sultana feels Bangladesh lost the game by losing early wickets in the Powerplay. While the batters did well to build a partnership, she believes the side failed to score enough runs through the middle overs. A strong finish would have lifted the total, but she feels Bangladesh still fell 10-15 runs short, which ultimately cost them both the match and their campaign. The Bangladesh skipper is full of praise for her bowlers and fielders, saying the way they fought until the very last ball makes her proud. Although Bangladesh came into the tournament hoping to win more matches, she sees the two victories as a significant achievement and is delighted with the commitment shown by every player, who gave their all for the team throughout the campaign.

Time to hear from the two captains now...

Bangladesh bow out with heads held high - Bangladesh Women can take plenty of heart from not just this spirited bowling effort, but their tournament as a whole. Finishing with two wins and three defeats, they gave a good account of themselves and gained valuable experience for the future. In this game, Marufa Akter struck with a beauty to remove Laura Wolvaardt off the very first ball, while the bowlers stayed disciplined and the fielders threw themselves around to save every run. Nahida Akter claimed two wickets, with Sanjida Akter Meghla and Ritu Moni chipping in one apiece to keep Bangladesh in the contest, but in the end, they just fell short.

Tigresses struggle to a modest total - Bangladesh Women huffed and puffed their way to a below-par total. Sobhana Mostary top-scored with 42 and added 56 with Sharmin Akter, but it was skipper Nigar Sultana's quickfire 32 off 20 that provided the late spark, leaving many to wonder if she should have come in earlier. South Africa Women were disciplined with the ball, with Nonkululeko Mlaba leading the way with 2/22, while Marizanne Kapp, Shabnim Ismail and Nadine de Klerk chipped in with a wicket each to keep Bangladesh in check.

South Africa scrape through nervy chase - South Africa Women suffered an early blow as Laura Wolvaardt fell off the very first ball, but Tazmin Brits and Annerie Dercksen steadied the innings with a cautious 52-run partnership. A mini collapse left them wobbling at 59/3, but Dercksen kept the scoreboard ticking before falling for a run-a-ball 45 with plenty still to do. Marizanne Kapp chipped in with crucial runs, though her run-out added to the tension. Nadine de Klerk's couple of boundaries in the penultimate over brought the equation down to five needed off the last over, but she too couldn't finish the job. It was Chloe Tryon who eventually sealed the win, rather scrappily, a fitting reflection of South Africa's hard-fought chase.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Marizanne Kapp wins the award for her all-round performance. 1/9 with the ball and 16 off 21 with the bat. She says that she was disappointed not to hit the stumps more often, but felt the bowling unit as a whole did a good job. She shares that they will take the win and emphasized that, in a World Cup, a win is a win, even if things got nervy for them towards the end.

Proteas survive Bangladesh scare - South Africa Women have just about got over the line, and while it was far from convincing, they have done exactly what they needed to. It will be more relief than celebration for the Proteas, who must now hope Australia Women can do them a favour by beating India Women to seal their place in the semifinals. Bangladesh Women, meanwhile, deserve immense credit. Playing at Lord's for the first time, they rose to the occasion brilliantly, made a real contest of it and pushed South Africa all the way to the final over.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle now. Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits are the two openers for South Africa Women. Marufa Akter to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go..,

... THE RUN CHASE ...

South Africa Women aim to chase comfortably - Chasing 118, South Africa Women will back themselves to finish the job comfortably. The question now is whether they can wrap it up quickly or if Bangladesh Women can put up a fight with the ball. We’ll find out soon. Join us shortly for the second innings.

A quick chat - South Africa Women's Shabnim Ismail feels it is a pretty decent surface to bowl on with nice carry. While they would have liked a few more wickets in the Powerplay, she believes the bowling unit still did a decent job. After the previous game, the focus was on improving field placements. She feels the bowling itself is not the issue, with the emphasis instead being on better execution and sticking to the plans. She remains confident despite not playing their best cricket yet. Their immediate priority is to secure the win first by chasing the target successfully.

South Africa Women's bowling group shines - For South Africa Women, the opening bowling pair of Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail were relentless, consistently hitting good lengths and extracting assistance from the surface. Nonkululeko Mlaba chipped in with two wickets and bowled a fine spell, while Nadine de Klerk and Ayabonga Khaka also supported the attack effectively. The Proteas would have ideally wanted to restrict Bangladesh to under 100, but a few extra runs in the backend meant they conceded slightly more than they would have liked. Still, they will be satisfied with their overall bowling performance.

Nigar Sultana’s late blitz lifts Bangladesh Women - A late surge helped Bangladesh Women recover to 117/5 in their 20 overs. Opting to bat first, they endured a shaky start as both openers fell cheaply. The innings was rebuilt by Sobhana Mostary and Shorna Akter, who stitched together a steady partnership to stabilise the side. Skipper Nigar Sultana then provided the decisive momentum, striking an unbeaten 32 off just 20 deliveries to propel Bangladesh close to the 120-run mark and give her team a fighting total.

South Africa Women are four down and in a spot of bother.

DRINKS! South Africa Women are in control of the chase, needing just 31 runs from the final six overs. Annerie Dercksen will aim to anchor the innings through to the end, while Marizanne Kapp looks to provide steady support at the other end. Bangladesh Women have bowled well to this point and will still be hoping to trigger a late wobble in the Proteas lineup.

Juairiya Ferdous tries to hoick it across the line, but she fails to connect. The ball zips through the gate and crashes into the stumps. Bangladesh Women are rocked early.

We are all set to begin now! The two umpires make their way out to the middle, followed by the South Africa Women players who take up their respective field positions. Juairiya Ferdous and Taj Nehar are the two openers for Bangladesh Women. Marizanne Kapp has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are moments away from the start of the match, but before that the giant flags of both nations unfurl and the players line up for the national anthems. It will be Bangladesh's first, followed by that of South Africa.

Let's hear from the other camp now - Reflecting on her all-round display against Pakistan, Shorna Akter says contributing in every facet of the game is what gives her the most satisfaction. Whether it is with the bat, ball or in the field, she enjoys being involved throughout the contest. She believes her performances stem from staying mentally clear and trusting the process she has worked on. Looking ahead to the challenge against South Africa, Shorna acknowledges the quality and experience in the opposition. Having faced them previously in South Africa, she knows the threat they possess and says Bangladesh respect them. Says that she also took five wickets against them. At the same time, she insists the team's focus is on playing to their own strengths and producing their best cricket.

Time for a quick chat - South Africa Women's Annerie Dercksen describes playing at Lord's as a dream come true, saying the experience still feels unreal. After arriving at the historic venue, she took time to appreciate the occasion and feels fortunate to be part of such a special match. Reflecting on her promotion to No. 3, Dercksen says the role brings fresh challenges, particularly with the responsibility of facing the new ball. She enjoys the opportunity, though, and credits Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits for providing solid starts that allow her to play with freedom. She also values the chance to bat alongside experienced teammates, saying their guidance and insights have been invaluable. With South Africa's semifinal hopes still alive, Dercksen insists the team's attention remains on securing a victory against Bangladesh. She expects their spin attack to test the batters but believes South Africa's focus should stay on executing their own plans. She adds with a smile that they would not mind a little help from Australia later in the day.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Smith is pitchside. He says that they are at the Home of Cricket and it is special day. Adds that the temperature will rise upto 21 degrees and there is a breeze as well that can help the bowlers. Mentions that the square boundaries are 58 meters and 65 meters and the straight hit is 71 meters. Tash Farrant joins and says that they are on pitch 13 where England played West Indies and more than 330 runs were scored. Says that it is a hybrid wicket but there is always something for the bowlers on this pitch. Shares that there will be some seam and swing upfront and she doesn't mind that South Africa Women are bowling first.

The skipper of South Africa Women - Laura Wolvaardt says they would likely have bowled first anyway. She adds that they’ve had a few close games recently but have managed to find ways to win, and they’ll be looking to do the same again. Wolvaardt also noted that the net run rate requirements are significant and need to be kept in mind. She confirms that the team is unchanged for this match. She concludes by saying the team will focus on taking it one ball at a time, with winning as the main priority.

The captain of Bangladesh Women - Nigar Sultana says this is another opportunity for the team to showcase their abilities. Having already secured two victories in the tournament, she hopes Bangladesh can add another win and finish on a high. She confirms that Taj Nehar replaces Dilara Akter in the playing XI. She also expresses the team's excitement about playing at Lord's and hopes to make the occasion a memorable one.

South Africa Women (Unchanged Playing XI) - Laura Wolvaardt (C), Tazmin Brits, Annerie Dercksen, Dane Van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp, Nadine De Klerk, Chloe Tryon, Sinalo Jafta (WK), Shabnim Ismail, Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba.

Bangladesh Women (Playing XI) - Juairiya Ferdous, Taj Nehar (In place of Dilara Akter), Sharmin Akhter, Nigar Sultana (C/WK), Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter, Ritu Moni, Rabeya Khan, Nahida Akter, Marufa Akter, Sanjida Akter Meghla.

TOSS - We are ready for the toss. Both the captains are out in the middle now. Laura Wolvaardt flips the coin and it lands in favour of Nigar Sultana. Bangladesh Women have elected to BAT first.

Bangladesh seek an upset - Bangladesh Women have endured an inconsistent campaign, registering wins over Pakistan and the Netherlands but suffering heavy defeats against Australia and India. Juairiya Ferdous, Nigar Sultana, Sobhana Mostary, and Shorna Akter have shown promise with the bat, while Ritu Moni, Marufa Akter, Rabeya Khan, and Nahida Akter have been their standout performers with the ball. To overcome a confident South African side, Bangladesh will need to produce their best all-round display of the tournament. Can they pull off a memorable upset, or will South Africa cruise to victory? Stay tuned as the toss and team news are coming up shortly.

South Africa eye a dominant finish - After a heavy defeat to Australia in their tournament opener, South Africa Women have responded brilliantly with three convincing victories on the trot. Tazmin Brits, Marizanne Kapp, Annerie Dercksen, and Laura Wolvaardt have led the charge with the bat, while Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon, and Nadine de Klerk have delivered consistently with the ball. With net run rate potentially playing a decisive role, the Proteas will be aiming for a clinical, ruthless performance to strengthen their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

Race to the semi-final - Hello and welcome to our coverage of Match 29 of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The penultimate game of the group stage sees South Africa Women take on Bangladesh Women in a crucial Group A encounter at Lord’s in London. South Africa currently sit third in the standings and must secure a convincing victory while hoping India Women lose their final group-stage match against Australia Women to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Bangladesh faces an even steeper challenge, they first need to beat South Africa and then rely on Australia defeating India to book an unlikely place in the last four.

…MATCHDAY…

A grand stage at headquarters - Lord's Cricket Ground is ready to host a vital group match in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. Match 29 brings an intriguing battle between South Africa Women and Bangladesh Women under the London sky. The Proteas arrive in high spirits after a thumping 88-run victory over the Netherlands in Bristol. Bangladesh are eager to turn the page after a challenging five-wicket defeat against a clinical Indian side. With the tournament group stage reaching its climax, every tactical decision will dictate who moves forward. The numbers game and the scramble for spots - South Africa currently sit third on the league table in Group A with six points and a net run rate of 0.734. Ahead of them are heavyweights Australia at the top of the table with eight points, followed closely by India in second place with six points and a much healthier net run rate of 2.268. To sneak past India and secure a coveted spot in the semi-finals, the South African side must focus heavily on boosting their net run rate by defeating Bangladesh by a massive margin. But India Women have their last game against the mighty Aussies, which is a must-win game for India Women. Meanwhile, Bangladesh find themselves out of the running for a semi-final berth, but they will certainly step onto the field playing for pride and hoping to finish their campaign with a memorable performance. Brits and the power at the top - The South African batting machine is functioning beautifully at the moment, spearheaded by the incredible form of Tazmin Brits. In her recent outing against the Dutch, she hammered a majestic unbeaten 114 runs off just 69 balls, a knock laced with 15 boundaries and three spectacular clearance hits. Captain Laura Wolvaardt has also been steady, setting up perfect platforms with her exquisite strokeplay. This dangerous opening combination gives the middle order absolute freedom to attack right from the word go. Suffocation and lethal lines - While the batting has grabbed the headlines, the bowling group has laid the groundwork for this successful run. The legendary Marizanne Kapp continues to be an intimidating presence with the new ball, while left arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba and the experienced Chloe Tryon control the middle phases with relentless accuracy. Their ability to stifle the scoring rate puts extreme pressure on opposition batters, triggering errors. Bangladesh will need a flawless plan to break through this versatile and disciplined bowling unit. A captain's burden and the local spark - For Bangladesh, captain Nigar Sultana remains the vital anchor around whom the entire batting unit revolves. Their campaign has been a mixture of fighting spirit and tough collapses, often struggling to maintain momentum when elite teams turn up the heat. Young talents like Juairiya Ferdous and Shorna Akter have provided excellent glimpses of potential, but singular bursts will not suffice against South Africa. The Asian side needs a combined and fearless effort from their top order to set or chase down a competitive score. Spin traps and the famous slope - The slow bowling contingent of Bangladesh will have to be clever on the unique surface at Lord's. Spinners like Rabeya Khatun and Nahida Akter must use their flight and subtle variations to disrupt the rhythm of Brits and Wolvaardt. If young quick Marufa Akter can extract some early shape with the white ball, she might create a rare window into the South African middle order. They will look to squeeze every bit of assistance the surface offers to cause a massive upset. Team form (Last 5 completed WT20Is, recent first) - SA-W - WWWLW | BAN-W - LWLWW. What the conditions whisper - Lord's usually brings an even contest where both batters and bowlers find some joy. Early on, the famous slope and a bit of overhead cover can assist the seamers, but once the surface settles, the quick outfield will reward pure timing. South Africa step out as the clear favorites given their explosive depth, but an unburdened Bangladesh playing with freedom makes this an unmissable afternoon of T20 cricket.
