Commentary
We are back with the chase. The opening pair of Will Young and Henry Nicholls is out in the middle with the bat for the Kiwis. Khary Pierre will open bowling for West Indies.
... THE RUN CHASE ...
The Lennox masterclass - What followed was a total capitulation led by a sensational Jayden Lennox. The left-arm spinner tore through the lower order with an incredible haul of 5 for 19, leaving the tailenders with nowhere to hide. Amir Jangoo played a patient knock of 24 but fell to Michael Bracewell in the 33rd over. The hosts were bundled out for a mere 138 in 35.6 overs. With the surface offering plenty of turn, the West Indies bowlers will feel they are still in the game, but New Zealand will back themselves heavily to chase down 139 and level the series. Stay tuned for the chase...
A quick word - Michael Bracewell says that the West Indies got off to a good start, but they were lucky to get wickets. He adds that they saw that spin was effective, and they continued with it. He reckons that Lennox was outstanding and ends by saying that they will try to build some partnerships and chase the total.
The spin trap - However, the game turned on its head the moment New Zealand turned to an all-out spin assault. Michael Bracewell provided the initial breakthrough before skipper Mitchell Santner cleaned up the well-set Campbell. Alongside an incredibly economical spell from Dean Foxcroft, the Kiwi spinners completely dried up the runs and suffocated the middle order. Partnerships simply refused to grow, and when Jayden Lennox dismissed captain Shai Hope right on the stroke of the first drinks break, the West Indies were in freefall, having lost all their early momentum.
West Indies have been bundled out for 138! Under a bright morning sun, the West Indies could not have dreamed of a better start. Openers John Campbell and Ackeem Auguste took the attack straight to the New Zealand pacers, playing with supreme confidence and crisp timing. Campbell was the clear aggressor, unleashing a flurry of boundaries to race into the 40s, while Auguste played the perfect foil at the other end. Together, they brought up a rapid 50-run partnership and guided the hosts to a commanding 58 for no loss by the end of the first Powerplay. At that moment, the Caribbean side looked destined for a massive total.

Commentary
Series levelled - With this dominant bowling display, New Zealand secures a convincing victory to level the 5-match ODI series at 1-1. The action now shifts to the third ODI, scheduled to take place on July 17 at 6.30 am GMT. Join us an hour early for the match buildup and updates. Cheers for now.
New Zealand captain - Mitchell Santner happily grins about winning the toss, noting that the pitch plays at its absolute best while the ball is brand new. He explains that as the ball gets older, it spins significantly more, meaning spinners simply need to let the surface do the work for them. Santner highly praises Jayden Lennox, stating he has watched him perform consistently day in and day out back home, and commends the left-arm spinner's exceptional accuracy as the perfect blueprint for their spin blueprint.
West Indies captain - Shai Hope reflects on the defeat by acknowledging that their total of 138 runs is a true reflection of the challenging surface. He points out that adding another 60 to 70 runs would have made it a completely different game, noting that conditions in the Caribbean generally favor chasing teams. Admitting that he rarely wins the toss, Hope emphasizes that his side must improve at batting first, adapt quickly for the next match, and figure out a better way to set a competitive target.
POTM - Jayden Lennox wins the award for his five-wicket haul. Jayden bowled 8 overs for just 19 runs while picking up 5. Lennox expresses his delight, stating that contributing to a victory for New Zealand feels incredibly special, especially given how different a spinner's role is back home compared to these conditions. He explains that success on this surface requires pitching the ball into the wicket and squeezing out as many dot balls as possible to build pressure. Furthermore, Lennox notes that these conditions are not entirely foreign to him.
Presentation ...
Earlier - After Mitchell Bracewell broke the West Indies' flying 63-run opening stand, New Zealand's spinners completely dominated the innings to bundle WI out for a mere 138. Left-arm spinner Lennox led the bowling onslaught with a five-wicket haul. Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner rotated his spin attack brilliantly on a helpful surface, keeping the stumps in play to orchestrate a dramatic batting collapse. Amir Jangoo provided the only resistance with a composed knock, but a total lack of application from the rest of the West Indies batters resulted in a low total despite a solid start from the openers.
Collective batting effort by NZ - Despite the middle-order collapse, New Zealand's depth saved the day as almost every batter chipped in with vital cameos to see the total through. The West Indies bowling unit was absolutely brilliant in defense, led by Khary Pierre who bagged two crucial wickets, while the other bowlers picked up one apiece. Vitel Lawes also bowled with great heart and control, however, he remained incredibly unlucky to go wicketless while leaking a few extra runs toward the back end.
Spinners sound the alarm after promising Kiwi start - Much like the West Indies innings, New Zealand started their batting innings on a positive note. While they did not quite match the explosive nature of the Windies' opening stand, the top order laid a solid foundation before the pitch began to play tricks. As the ball softened a tad, the West Indies spinners extracted immense turn and bounce from the spin-friendly conditions. The home side struck in tandems and put the brakes on the scoring rate, causing a middle-order wobble.
Resilient New Zealand battles back - Congratulations to New Zealand on pulling off a hard-fought victory in this low-scoring affair and leveling the 5-match ODI series at one game apiece! Defending a meager total of 138 was always going to require something special from the West Indies, and they made the visitors sweat for every single run. It was never an easy chase on a challenging surface, but the Kiwis showed tremendous grit to overcome the pressure and cross the finish line with five wickets in hand.

We are all set for the action to begin. The umpires and the players are out in the middle. John Campbell and Ackeem Auguste open up for the West Indies. Jacob Duffy has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
West Indies (Playing XI) - John Campbell, Ackeem Auguste, Keacy Carty, Shai Hope (C)(WK), Sherfane Rutherford, Amir Jangoo, Gudakesh Motie, Khary Pierre, Matthew Forde (In for Shamar Joseph), Alzarri Joseph, Vitel Lawes.
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (WK), Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Dean Foxcroft (In for Nathan Smith), Matthew Fisher, Jacob Duffy, Jayden Lennox.
The skipper of West Indies - Shai Hope embraced the challenge of batting first, emphasizing the need for his team to adapt and execute their plans on a surface that looks very similar to previous encounters. He confirmed one change to their side, bringing in Matthew Forde to replace Shamar Joseph. Hope also praised the immediate impact of youngster Vitel Lawes, highlighting his enjoyment of the game and a rare, valuable skill set that gives the Caribbean side a unique boost.
The captain of New Zealand - Mitchell Santner says that they will bowl first. Adds that they will exploit the slow daytime pitch before the surface improves under lights. Reflecting on their close defeat in the first ODI, Santner emphasized the need for better execution after the team threw away a strong position and fell short with the bat in the final ten overs. Looking to maximize the conditions, the Kiwis made a solitary tactical adjustment to their lineup, bringing in Dean Foxcroft as an extra spin option to replace Nathan Smith.
TOSS - New Zealand have won the toss and will BOWL first.
A big battle ahead - Looking at the team sheets we have some news coming from the camps. The hosts will miss the services of Justin Greaves due to a back injury but the explosive Shimron Hetmyer returns to the squad fresh from his stint in the MLC. There is also a huge chance that all rounder Roston Chase returns to the playing XI if he recovers from his finger injury. With New Zealand desperate to bounce back and the West Indies riding a wave of immense confidence this encounter promises to be an absolute thriller. Stick around as the toss is just moments away.
Maroon Army aiming to maintain the squeeze - The West Indies will want to build on their clinical performance but they still have areas to fine tune. Their bowling unit will aim to replicate the execution that triggered the stunning Kiwi collapse especially with the nineteen year old sensation Vitel Lawes turning heads with his unique left arm wrist spin. The home side batters showed masterclass composure during that massive one hundred and thirty one run stand between Keacy Carty and skipper Shai Hope and they will want to carry that same ruthless mindset to completely deflate the opposition bowling attack today.
Black Caps seeking batting discipline - For New Zealand the primary learning from the opening fixture is the need for late innings composure. They cannot afford to squander brilliant platforms after losing their final six wickets for just thirty three runs last time around. Their dynamic top order batters like Daryl Mitchell and Will Young need to convert their starts into massive match winning centuries. More importantly their bowling group must find a way to break partnerships in the middle overs and apply sustained pressure rather than letting the game drift away.
A scorching start in Guyana - A very warm welcome to cricket fans everywhere as we bring you the coverage of the second ODI between the West Indies and New Zealand. The hosts are absolutely buzzing after pulling off the second highest successful ODI chase at this venue to take a 1-0 lead in this five match series. Tonight the Men in Maroon will look to double their advantage and tighten their grip on the series while the Black Caps face a quick turnaround to keep the hosts within touching distance.
... MATCH DAY ...
Round two in Guyana - The first blow has been landed by West Indies, and New Zealand have little time to dwell on it as the teams meet again at the Guyana National Stadium for the second ODI of this five-match series. After two washouts in the Sri Lanka series robbed them of valuable points in the race for direct World Cup qualification, this was a much-needed victory for the Men in Maroon. New Zealand's last ODI assignment ended in a 2-1 series defeat in Bangladesh, and they now find themselves trailing in the Caribbean as well. Mitchell Santner's side will be eager to mount a swift response. A lesson in conversion - New Zealand will feel they let a golden opportunity slip away in the series opener. At 234/4 after 43 overs, they looked well placed for a total in excess of 300, only to lose their final 6 wickets for just 33 runs. Their inability to convert starts also hurt them. Every batter in the top 7 crossed 20, but only Daryl Mitchell went on to register a half-century. As the Kiwis look to hit back, the onus will be on the batting group to make those starts count, with individuals needing to take responsibility and play the innings that can define the match. Plenty to smile about - One of the biggest positives for West Indies from the series opener was the emergence of left-arm chinaman Vitel Lawes. Remarkably, it was his first senior appearance in any format after graduating through the Under-19 ranks, and he played a key role with a three-wicket haul. To fight back from a position where New Zealand looked destined for 300-plus and bowl them out for 267 was a commendable effort that would have pleased captain Shai Hope. Hope then led from the front with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 87 to guide his side home and continue his outstanding run in ODIs. In fact, he is the only Windies batter to have scored more than 500 ODI runs over the past year, underlining just how vital he has been to the batting unit. Keacy Carty is the next highest with 283 runs, and it was no surprise to see the pair combine for a match-winning stand in the series opener. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - WI - WLLLL | NZ - LLLWW. Conditions in focus - It was a slow, low surface served up in the series opener, one that, by Shai Hope's admission, became slightly easier to bat on under lights as the ball started to skid on rather than hold in the pitch. Showers are expected in the morning, but the weather should clear by the time play gets underway. With the surface likely to improve as the game progresses and the potential rain leaving a bit of moisture in the pitch, the captain winning the toss is expected to lean towards bowling first. All in all, the ingredients are in place for another intriguing contest.
