PITCH REPORT - Nasser Hussain says there could be some rain but we have a Reserve Day so it won't affect much. Adds that the sun is beaming onto the wicket and there is more tinge of grass on it. Tells that it looks more like a sub-continent pitch. Kumar Sangakkara joins him and says that there may be some reverse swing but the bowlers will need to work hard for it. Hussain ends by saying that the pitch hasn't deteriorated that much which is unusual for The Oval and reckons India has a chance here.

Australia, on the other hand, will still be very confident as they are holding the cards and are slightly ahead in this Test. They were able to pick up three wickets but after that looked a bit rattled by the counterattack from India. However, they know that the morning session will be very crucial with Pat Cummins, Scott Boland, and Mitchell Starc raring to go, and if they get rid of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, or both, then this match will tilt massively in their favour. Whatever happens, we are surely in for a thrilling Day of Test cricket.

India has played catch-up in this Test since Day 1 but they are still very much in it because of some fighting performances from Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shardul Thakur. When India came out to bat, they knew that they would need to chase the highest-ever total in the history of Test cricket, which wouldn't be easy. However, the 71-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Rahane has kept them in the game and given them a glimmer of hope for something special to happen.

Alex Carey is in for a chat. He says that they have got runs on the board which they would have liked. Mentions that Indian batters played well. Reckons that they have got a big chance tomorrow. On the catch by Cameron Green, he says that it was fair and square. Feels that the right decision was made. Shares that it is going to be a case of being patient and pitching it in the right areas. On declaration, he says that it wasn't spoken about until Pat Cummins came out to bat. Reckons that Mitchell Starc accelerated well to get them to a good position and credits Cameron Green for negotiating the tricky phase in the morning. Ends by saying that Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli are class players and it is a matter of just being patient.

The day belonged to Australia though as they batted really well to put themselves in a commanding position and gave India a target of 444 runs to chase down. They started the day on 123 for the loss of 4 wickets with a lead of 296 and suffered an early blow when they lost Marnus Labuschagne on his overnight score of 41 courtesy of Umesh Yadav. Alex Carey and Cameron Green stitched together a 43-run partnership but Ravindra Jadeja managed to get rid of Green before the Lunch break. They crossed the 200-run mark in the first session as Carey managed to find the boundaries regularly with Mitchell Starc for company and the two added 93 runs for the seventh wicket. Mohammad Shami dismissed Starc and Pat Cummins which prompted the Aussies to declare but the way India started with their openers it looked like they were on a mission. Shubman Gill was dismissed by Scott Boland and there was some controversy regarding the legitimacy of the catch but in the end, what the third umpire decides is what counts. The final session has set up this finale wonderfully well and there is much to look forward to on Day 5.

SESSION SUMMARY - 123 runs, 32.5 overs, 2 wickets. India have been positive right through this inning and have not tried to play for time. They came out after Tea having lost Shubman Gill just before the break with 41 runs on the board and Cheteshwar Pujara joined forces with Rohit Sharma to forge a 51-run partnership in 77 deliveries. Australia did not panic though and stuck to their plans but when they realized that pace was not working, they decided to bring Nathan Lyon into the attack and he delivered straight away dismissing the Indian captain on 43 in his very first over. Pujara played a poor shot the very next over to the bowling of Pat Cummins and it was looking very glum for India. However, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane steadied the ship and have added 71 runs so far for the 4th wicket in 118 balls. Kohli is 6 runs short of his half-century and he has scored at a brisk rate while Rahane has played the anchor role scoring 20 runs in 59 deliveries. The equation is now simple for Day 5. India need 280 runs to win this final and Australia need to take 7 wickets to become Test champions.

We will now move to the last session of the penultimate day of this Test match and Australia will want to take the initiative with a few wickets to set up their win on Day 5. India came out after Lunch eager to bowl out their opponents at the earliest but faced resistance from the Australian lower order. Ravindra Jadeja got the ball to turn but was not successful in getting the breakthroughs. The game had gone away from them and they were hoping for the opponents to declare when Mohammad Shami claimed two wickets as a consolation. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill once again got them off to a positive start and were looking really comfortable out in the middle. Shubman Gill edged one towards third slip and Cameron Green took a good catch inches from the ground. It was referred upstairs for a clean catch and most of the people around the stadium felt that the ball grazed the ground. The third umpire felt that there was a finger under the ball and he adjudges it out which was met by boos around the stadium. A controversial decision that makes the task even tougher for India as they still need 403 runs to win.

SESSION SUMMARY - 110 runs, 21.4 overs, 3 wickets. Australia are favorites to win this game and they have ample time to attack the Indian batters as they have posted a massive target of 444 runs. They went into Tea 374 runs ahead and came out looking to be positive in the quest to build on the lead. Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc added 93 runs together in 120 deliveries with the former reaching a well-deserved half-century. Starc provided the required impetus as he scored 41 runs in 57 balls before being dismissed. Pat Cummins did not choose to declare, instead came out to bat but could not make an impact and his wicket brought about the declaration. The opening bowlers probed and were finally rewarded by getting a breakthrough just before Tea as Scott Boland claimed a crucial with but the credit has to be given to Cameron Green for yet another stunning catch. They now have four more sessions to run through this Indian batting line-up.

At the start of the day, India needed early wickets to have a shot at winning this Test. The move to start with Umesh Yadav from one end rewarded India with a breakthrough in his second over of the day. Moreover, Ravindra Jadeja's ploy to bowl in the rough worked as well. Having reduced Australia to 167-6, India would have fancied themselves to pick a couple of wickets more before Lunch but they were unable to do so. The Indian bowlers have fought hard in the second innings and when they come back after Lunch, they would want to put a squeeze on things and at the same time, bowl Australia out as quickly as possible. Can India manage to keep Australia's lead under 400? We shall find out soon as the players return for the second session at 5.40 pm IST (12.10 pm GMT).

Another absorbing session of Test cricket comes to an end and it is Australia who continue to be in a dominant position. Having begun the day 296 runs ahead, Australia were rocked early, losing their overnight batter Marnus Labuschagne. Despite losing Green, Carey continued punishing loose deliveries and thanks to him, Australia's lead has now swelled to 374 runs. PITCH REPORT - Nasser Hussain starts by saying that it is a stunning day in South London and informs that Day 4 will be the warmest day of the Test. Adds that there is a 7% chance of rain but feels that it will stay away. Mentions that it is a new ball pitch and there is a vast difference in bounce between the new and old ball. Ravi Shastri joins him and says that the cracks have opened up and they are on the natural lengths for Mohammed Siraj and Pat Cummins. Reckons that reaction time is marginal when new ball pitches on these cracks. Looking at the rough, he says that it is not going to be easy for left-handed batters. Adds that it looks good from India's point of view since they have only a left-hander in Ravindra Jadeja. Ends by saying that chasing anything over 375 will be tough for India but expects them to go for the win.

Having started Day 3 on the back foot, India lost KS Bharat on the second ball of the day and were staring at conceding a huge first innings lead. Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur then got together and stitched a fighting stand. Once Rahane was dismissed, the tail was unable to wag and India were bowled out for 296 runs. India showed a much improved bowling display in the second innings and did not allow Australia to run away with the game. If India are to have any chance of winning this Test, early wickets on Day 4 will be key. Can Mohammed Siraj and Co. swing the match in India’s favour? Australia were off to the best possible start on Day 3 as Scott Boland struck in his very first over. However, they were unable to capitalise on this early scalp in what was a frustrating first session for them. The Aussie bowlers roared back in the second session and bundled India out to take a first-innings lead of 173 runs. In reply, they were off to a cautious start and ended the day with a lead of 296 runs and 6 wickets in hand. Australia would want to bat the whole first session and take a call on a declaration after Lunch.

We have had three days of entertaining action with the game ebbing and flowing and it is Australia who find themselves in a strong position to call the shots.

... DAY 4, SESSION 1 …

Australia have been well ahead right from Day 1 and they have consolidated their position even further on this moving day of the Test match. India are grasping at strings at the moment and they already need a massive batting effort in their second inning to pull off a miraculous run chase. How long will the Aussies bat on Day 4? Or will India be able to bowl out their opponents early and take the momentum into their batting? India's star with the bat, Ajinkya Rahane is in for a chat. He informs that he is feeling alright despite the blow on the right index finger. Adds that it is painful but manageable and says that it will not affect his batting in the second innings. Mentions that he is really happy with the way he batted and feels that the partnership with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur was crucial. Reckons that bowlers bowled well in the second innings and it is a good effort to reduce Australia to 123-4. On the catch by Cameron Green, he says that he is a good fielder with a big reach. Feels that Australia are slightly ahead in the game but feels that the first hour on Day 4 will be crucial as a bowling unit.

India started the day with their backs against the wall and things got worse for them when KS Bharat was dismissed on the second delivery of the morning. However, after that came the fightback from India as Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur held the fort right up till Lunch putting on 109 runs together for the 7th wicket. Rahane reached his half-century and looked destined for his 13th hundred but was dismissed by Pat Cummins right after the break. The Australian skipper dismissed Umesh Yadav soon after but Shardul managed to reach his half-century as he played an outstanding rearguard knock. He was dismissed by Cameron Green and Mohammad Shami lost his wicket to Mitchell Starc in the quest for some quick runs. With a lead of 173, Australia started their second innings in a circumspect way and David Warner lost his wicket to Mohammed Siraj which had the Indians believing they were still in the game going into the Tea interval.

SESSION SUMMARY - 100 runs, 33 overs, 3 wickets. Day 3 has definitely been a moving day and Australia are well on top of this game. They have taken a massive lead of 296 runs and still have 6 wickets in hand having worn out the Indians in the field with some good batting. They went into Tea at 23 for the loss of one wicket and the Indian bowlers bowled some tight lines after the break. They were rewarded for their persistence when Umesh Yadav got Usman Khawaja driving away from his body and found his outside edge through to the keeper. A 62-run partnership between Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne shifted the momentum back in Australia’s favor as they scored briskly but Smith was dismissed playing a poor shot. Ravindra Jadeja was the one who got the breakthrough and he kept the pressure up with some tight bowling. He had a chance dropped by Umesh Yadav in the deep but it did not prove costly as two balls later he held onto one off his own bowling to send Travis Head back to the shed. Marnus battled on and is 9 runs short of his half-century and Cameron Green has managed to survive at the wicket.
