Right then, that is it from this game where Australia gets off the mark in the World Cup while Sri Lanka remains winless. However, the action continues in the ODI World Cup as South Africa takes on Netherlands to avenge their loss in the 2022 T20 World Cup. That game will be played on 17th October, Tuesday at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT), but as you know, you can join us early for all the build-up. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Pat Cummins, the victorious skipper of Australia says that nothing was much said on the back of two losses. Mentions that they have high standards and the energy on the field was great. Feels that Sri Lanka started well but they stuck at it and bowled decently. Adds that the bowlers hit the deck hard. Reckons that 300 would have been par on this surface. Shares that there are a lot of people watching but outside noise does not bother them. Ends by saying that all parts of the game came together and they want to keep it up.

Kusal Mendis, the captain of Sri Lanka says that Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka batted really well but the middle order struggled. Adds that 290-300 would have been a good score on this wicket. Mentions that they did not rotate the strike enough but they have shown their batting prowess in the first two games and he has the confidence in his team. Praises Dilshan Madushanka for his opening spell. Ends by saying that he hopes Dasun Shanaka and Matheesha Pathirana recover quickly.

Adam Zampa is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant spell. He says that he did not feel great and informs that he has been suffering from back spasms for the last couple of days. Mentions that he tried to get through but feels that he could have bowled better. Says that it was the captain's decision to bowl off-spin to the left-hander. States that his back is pretty sore and was not at his best in this game. Feels that he could have bowled better in the last game. Further adds that his job is to make it easier for the death bowlers. Shares that he did nothing different and it took a while for him to get into the game. Mentions that bowling wrist spin is not easy and it is about doing the same job over and over again. Ends by saying that he is looking forward to their next game against Pakistan and feels that it will not be easy.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, after electing to bat first, Sri Lanka posted an under-par total on the board thanks to an extraordinary collapse. They were 125-0 with both openers, Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka registering fifties but were bowled out for 209 which says all about their performance with the blade. For Australia, Pat Cummins led from the front with a couple of important wickets and a fine run-out while Adam Zampa was their best bowler with a four-wicket haul. Mitchell Starc picked up two scalps while Glenn Maxwell chipped in with one. While chasing, they knew that they just had to be sensible and a couple of fifties from Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis got the job done.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their bowling effort, especially after the start that they got. Dilshan Madushanka was on fire with the new ball and got rid of David Warner and Steven Smith in the same over which set the tone for them, but his partner Lahiru Kumara leaked runs from the other end and failed to build on that. They did not have many runs to play with and allowed the Aussies to build up a couple of partnerships which took the game away from them. It was Madushanka once again who got another wicket in the middle overs while Dunith Wellalage got one too but in the end, they fell to yet another defeat.

Australia started off with a bang getting 15 runs off the very first over but suffered a setback when both David Warner and Steven Smith were dismissed in the same over. However, the intent from Mitchell Marsh was pretty clear as he continued to rack up the boundaries from the other end. Marnus Labuschagne played second fiddle to him and both of them added 57 runs together where Marsh registered his fifty as well which was also the first by any Aussie batter in this World Cup. After getting to it, a moment of madness cost him his wicket but he set up a good platform for his team. Marnus Labuschagne took the chase forward along with Josh Inglis who was the aggressor and notched up a fine half-century. The former tried to go on the attack but lost his wicket in the process after a 77-run stand which took the Aussies close to the win. Then Glenn Maxwell came in and started going bang bang keeping the NRR in mind as he scored 31 runs off just 21 balls. Inglis had the chance of staying till the end, but he too got out on 58 trying to go for a big shot. In the end, Marcus Stoinis played a few lusty blows and finished the job along with Maxi to get their first win of the tournament.

The Lion may be the King of the Jungle but the Kangaroos have roared louder than the Lankan Lions in Lucknow! Australia finally get their first points on the board in this World Cup and extends their unbeaten run to eight matches against Sri Lanka in ODI World Cups. The Lankans had the opportunity to get their first win over the Aussies in this mega event since that 1996 final but only have themselves to blame as they have to wait for even longer now.

Commentary

After a bit of rain delay, we are all set for Australia's reply to commence. Sri Lankans are in a huddle near the rope before they spread out to take their respective field positions. It will be Mitchell Marsh and David Warner to open the innings for Australia. Lahiru Kumara will start with the new ball for Sri Lanka. Off we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

UPDATE - 6.47 pm IST (1.17 pm GMT) - Great news! The rain has stopped and the covers are off. Considering that it was just a drizzle, it should not take long for the ground staff to get the field ready for play. More promising signs as we have a start time for the Australian run chase. Play will resume at 6.55 pm IST (1.25 pm GMT).

Right then, Australia will be the happier of the two sides at the halfway mark. However, batting under lights isn't easy at this venue and their misfiring batting unit will have to rise to the challenge. Moreover, Australia have failed to cross the 200-run mark twice, and no Aussie batter has managed to score a fifty at this World Cup so far. Will they get the job done here? Or will Sri Lanka make a match out of this? The start of the chase will be a bit delayed as the covers are coming on again, but it is only a slight drizzle. Stick with us for further updates.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka will be disappointed with this batting effort, especially after the platform laid by the openers. After Kusal Mendis called it right and opted to put runs on the board, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera did a good job of negating the Aussie pacers. They were even helped by the bowlers missing their lines and lengths, which allowed them to ease off the early jitters. Once the movement disappeared, both openers looked at ease, and Perera carried on without any aftereffects of the blow to the helmet. At 125-0 and both batters completing their fifties, Sri Lanka were on course for a much bigger total than they eventually got. Once the two set openers perished, none of the incoming batters were able to handle the pressure and the wickets began to fall like ninepins on either side of the rain interruption. Charith Asalanka did farm the strike over while batting with the tail, but with nine wickets down, he had to go for the shots and was dismissed for 25.

In search of early wickets, Australia's new ball pairing of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood looked to go full, but they erred by bowling too straight and leaking boundaries in the process. Pat Cummins brought himself on as the first change, but he too failed to have any impact. As was the case in the last game against South Africa, the ineffectiveness of the pacers meant Glenn Maxwell was brought into the attack inside the first powerplay. He would have managed to trap Kusal Perera in front of the stumps had it been reviewed. There were a few half chances that Australia missed to convert, which meant they were behind the eight ball. It was Pat Cummins who broke the opening stand and soon went on to account for the other opener. Having had not so great first two games, Adam Zampa proved his worth by removing Sri Lanka's two in-form batters, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama. Zampa carried on even after the rain break and was supported by Mitchell Starc from the other end. The leggie had the opportunity to become the first Aussie spinner to clinch a five-wicket haul, but Glenn Maxwell wrapped up the innings by making Charith Asalanka his second victim. The bowlers were well backed up by the fielders, especially David Warner whose two excellent catches started the turnaround for Australia.

What's with Asian teams and their batting collapses at this World Cup? First Pakistan, and now Sri Lanka. From 157-2, Sri Lanka lost their last 8 wickets for 52 runs to be bowled out for 209. If you consider the opening wicket partnership of 125 runs, the batting story for the Lankans will look even uglier. As far as Australia are concerned, it has been a tale of two halves. They did not start well but came roaring back to roll Sri Lanka over.

43.3W

OUT! TAKEN! Glenn Maxwell finishes things off for Australia! He tosses this one up, full and around middle, turns away a bit, Charith Asalanka goes down on one knee for the slog sweep but the spin makes the ball take the top edge and the ball flies in the air in front of long on. Marnus Labuschagne runs forward, settles under it and pouches it safely. Sri Lanka have been bowled out for 209!

The wind seems to have slowed and things have returned to normalcy. Australia will want to get the last wicket quickly.

43.22

Tossed up, full and on off, Charith Asalanka uses his feet and chips it over extra covers for a couple of runs.

OUT!

OUT! RUN OUT! A brilliant piece of fielding and Australia get another wicket now. Mitchell Starc serves a full toss, on middle, Dunith Wellalage drills it towards mid off and sets off for the run, but he has to go around Starc and then put in a dive in to make his ground. However, Pat Cummins is quick to pounce on the ball and hits the bullseye at the bowler's end. Marnus Labuschagne and the Aussie players look confident and the replay shows that the batter is just short of his crease. Australia are all over Sri Lanka now! As mentioned earlier, Starc held his ground after delivering the ball and Dunith, who was running in a straight line, had to turn around the bowler a bit to change his trajectory. That extra second has cost him those few centimetres. Chamika Karunaratne is the new batter for Sri Lanka.

However, the Aussies feel that it is pad first and after a deliberation with the keeper, Pat Cummins goes for the review. The front on replays and UltraEdge confirm that it is bat first and Australia lose their review on the very first ball.

Done with the pre-match formalities! The Australian players can be seen in a huddle where Steven Smith is giving a pep talk. Now they spread out to take their respective field positions. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera are the two openers for Sri Lanka. Mitchell Starc has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

The two umpires walk out to the middle followed by the players of both sides who line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Sri Lanka's first followed by the national anthem of Australia.

The captain of Australia, Pat Cummins says they would have batted first as well but this doesn't make much difference. Adds that they have had a couple of good training sessions and it is all about being fresh for each game. Informs they are unchanged.

The skipper of Sri Lanka, Kusal Mendis says that they will bat first. Mentions that the wicket will play well in the first and reckons that it will turn later. Shares that he watched the previous game between Australia and South Africa at this venue and feels that batting will be easier in the first half. Adds that they have a couple of spinners who will come into play in the second half. Informs that they have made changes to the side with Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Kumara coming in for Dasun Shanaka and Matheesha Pathirana respectively. States that is unfortunate for Dasun to miss out on such an important game. Also says that the par score will be around 290-300 and hopes that the batters can get the total.

Australia (Unchanged Playing XI) - David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (WK), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (C), Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (C/WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne (In for Dasun Shanaka), Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara (In for Matheesha Pathirana), Dilshan Madushanka.

TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and they elected to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Samuel Badree is pitchside. He says that the straight boundaries are the same and there is only a metre difference between the square ones. Adds the outfield is in sublime condition. Nasser Hussain joins him and says that there is not of moisture on it and there is something for both pacers and spinners. Adds that in the previous game the South African seamers hit the back of a length while the Aussies went a bit too full which they will look to change in this game. Ends by saying it is a huge game for both teams.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka have lost their way since being handed a drubbing in the Asia Cup final by India. They had a far-from-ideal start to the World Cup with back-to-back losses and are in a similar position as Australia. In what has come as a massive blow to their preparations, skipper Dasun Shanaka has been ruled out due to a quadriceps tear. The positive for them is that they have been able to breach the 300-run mark twice, and it has been the bowlers that have failed to complement the batters. Considering Matheesha Pathirana's ineffectiveness, we might see Kasun Rajitha returning to the side and partnering Maheesh Theekshana with the new ball. Being handed over the reins now, Kusal Mendis will be expected to lead from the front. Who are you backing to register their first win? Stay tuned as the toss and team news is coming up in a bit.

Coming into the World Cup, Australia were labelled as one of the favourites, but the five-time winners have failed to live up to the tag so far. In the two games played, the batters have let the team down, failing to cross 200 on both occasions. The experienced trio of David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steven Smith will have to put their hands up and pull the team out of this batting crisis. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have done a decent job with the ball, while Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa have leaked runs aplenty in the two games. What has made matters worse for them is that they have been lacklustre in the field and will have to convert half chances in this game.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks! The 2023 ODI World Cup has lift off with last night's result in Delhi. Afghanistan pulled off one of, if not the greatest, upsets in World Cup history by beating the defending champions and white-ball powerhouse, England. We now shift our focus to Lucknow, where Australia and Sri Lanka square off at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. This is going to be a clash between two teams who are yet to get off the mark in the competition, and a loss here for either side will heavily dent their chances of progressing further.

... MATCH DAY ...

In a tournament that offers nine group-stage matches, leaving ample room for an occasional slip-up, the last situation you'd desire is a disheartening 0-3 record early on. Yet, this is the predicament that looms over either Australia or Sri Lanka as they lock horns in Lucknow, a pivotal clash for both sides, brimming with the weight of retaining their hopes for a spot in the semifinals. The beginning of this tournament has been grueling for both teams, but a victory in this encounter could serve as a beacon of hope, reigniting their ambitions to claim one of the top four positions. Australia, bearing its illustrious World Cup legacy, is grappling with glaring issues that have caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. Faced with the daunting challenge of taking on the hosts, India, and a surging South Africa at the outset of the competition, Australia have fallen far short of their usually high standards in all three facets of the game. On the flip side, Sri Lanka have managed to amass runs effectively, surpassing the 300-run mark against both South Africa and Pakistan. However, their persistent dilemma has been a propensity to concede runs at an even higher rate - they've relinquished 773 runs in 98.2 overs across two matches at an alarming economy rate of 7.86 runs per over. This imbalance in performance has proved detrimental, even with Kusal Mendis's brilliant century against Pakistan. Adding to Sri Lanka's challenges is the loss of their captain, Dasun Shanaka, who's been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Consequently, the captaincy baton now rests on Kusal Mendis' shoulders. Yet, despite the trial by fire their bowlers have endured, the spinners within the Sri Lankan ranks will harbor aspirations of making a substantial impact against Australia. In an unusual move, Australia made two changes to their lineup after just one match, with the omission of Cameron Green, although this decision had been expected, and the notable exclusion of Alex Carey. Their 14-player squad currently competes without the services of Travis Head, who is yet to join the group. Among those players, Sean Abbott is the sole member yet to feature in the tournament. Of pressing concern is the Australian batting lineup, which is yet to witness a fifty-run contribution from any player. Presently, Australia hold the dubious distinction of possessing the lowest batting average among all the teams in the tournament, standing at 18.80. Furthermore, they've struggled to reach the 200-run milestone in their initial two outings. In their most recent ODI encounters, taking place in mid-2022 during a five-match series, Sri Lanka emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline. Australia made a calculated gamble in their final squad selection by opting not to replace Ashton Agar with a like-for-like player. Although Glenn Maxwell has performed admirably with his part-time off spin, Australia's struggles have been exacerbated by a rare downturn in form for Adam Zampa. Following his impressive performance of 4 for 48 in Bloemfontein, Zampa's fortunes have dwindled, accumulating 7 wickets while conceding 430 runs, bearing an economy rate of 7.41 across six games. On a contrasting note, Kusal Mendis' form is nothing short of spectacular. When including his warm-up innings against Afghanistan, he's compiled an impressive 356 runs in his last three innings. This tally features a career-best 122 off 77 balls against Pakistan in ODIs. Nonetheless, a critical question lingers over whether Mendis can sustain his fluid, aggressive style amidst the added responsibilities of captaincy and perhaps the burdensome role of wicketkeeping. He boasts a commendable one-day record against Australia, with an average of 50.33 from 11 innings. As for the playing surface at the Ekana Stadium, it has displayed an evolving character throughout the matches, offering a degree of difficulty as the game progresses. During the Australia vs. South Africa encounter, the pitch exhibited traits favorable to the quick bowlers in the latter stages. These conditions might influence the captain winning the toss in their decision-making regarding batting or bowling. Interestingly, Pat Cummins and Dasun Shanaka, prior to his injury, had both secured the toss on different occasions and made different choices each time, with their teams suffering defeat on both occasions. Therefore, the captains may opt to leave this pivotal decision to fate. Adding to the equation is the expectation of another scorching day in Lucknow, further increasing the challenges for the competing teams.
