Right then, that's it from the coverage of this game. The action in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League continues on Monday 15th May. In this match, Gujarat will be locking horns against Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The first ball will be at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you all know you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Rinku Singh wins the Player of the Match award for the way he took his team near the victory line. He says that they decided to attack the loose balls and try to knock it around the park for singles. Tells that he bats in a similar position in domestic cricket and is used to bat up the order as well. Informs that he spends times in the gym, looks after his diet and is glad that it is showing in his game as well. Ends by saying he has put in a lot of hard work behind his success.

Nitish Rana the captain of Kolkata says that he had mentioned at the toss that all departments need to do well and they will win which is what happened. Gives credit to Chandrakant Pandit for opting to use the heavy roller as he was against it as he felt that the pitch will break and the spinners will get turn but that did not happen. Claims that it was because of the spinners that they won the game as they did really well and used the conditions to their advantage. Explains that they decided that either he or Rinku Singh will hold one end and if they do that they will get over the finsih line. Feels that the everyone enjoys the home advantage except Kolkata and feels that they need to keep adapting to various situations which is a quality needed in a good player.

Stay tuned for the presentation...

Sunil Narine is in for a quick chat. He says that the pitch is suited for spin and ground is pretty large so he was trying to use the conditions to his advantage. Explains that the top-order batters had a little leeway to go hard as they bat deep but they need to play the situation better. Mentions that they always try to do things differently and try to do their best in the middle.

MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai says that it is one of those games where you win the toss and bat first but when we came out in the second innings and the first ball was bowled, we realised that it was a 180 wicket which you can not get in the first inning. Explains that there is no certainty of how the wicket will play so the decision becomes tricky. Adds that if they would have bowled first and there was no dew in the second inning, chasing 160 would have become tough. Claims that he does not blame the players as the conditions were such and they did their best. Admits that he has spoken a lot with Shivam Dube but that is between them and he is very happy with what he has done. He hopes that he can keep improving game-to-game and keep getting runs. Ends by saying that Deepak Chahar is someone who swings the ball and knows where to keep the fielders with the experience to know where to bowl when it is not swinging.

Earlier in the game, MS Dhoni's decision of batting first could well have backfired when the Kolkata spinners dominated in the middle overs and left the host teetering at 75-5, that too, after they made a promising start. That's when Dube and Jadeja joined forces and their stand of 68 runs helped Chennai to head into the break with a fighting total on the scoreboard. Although, it proved to be quite a comfortable chase for Kolkata, as they got over the line with 9 balls to spare.

Chennai were off to a dream start with the ball, all thanks to Deepak Chahar. The seamer caused all sorts of problems to the opposition with the new ball. He picked up three wicket in his three overs up top, and put his side comfortably on the driving seat. Although, once the spinners came into play the match took a wild turn, but the ball did not turn for the Chennai spinners on this venomous track. As Varun Chakaravarthy mentioned at the half-way mark, that the wicket got flat as the first innings came to an end, and we saw a similar pattern during Kolkata's chase as well. It was tricky at the start for the Kolkata batters to get their eye-in, but Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh stitched a 99-run stand which got their team near the victory line.

With the way this game started who would've thought Kolkata would get over the line, that too, quite convincingly. We have just witnessed a commanding chase from the visitors and they have won the game against all the odds here. We have seen Rinku Singh the game-finisher on multiple occasions, but tonight we saw the the skipper of Kolkata get his team over the line.

Nitish Rana looks to hit through the line and gets a thick outside edge that flies towards third man for four runs. Kolkata have won the game with six wickets in hand and with 10 balls to spare as they keep their qualification hopes alive.

Commentary

We are back for the second essay as the umpires have made their way out to the middle. MS Dhoni has a few words to share with the huddle of Chennai players at the boundary line before they disperse and take their respective fielding positions. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Jason Roy will open the innings for Kolkata and will want to preserve their wickets in the Powerplay. Chennai have opted for their Impact Player as Matheesha Pathirana is on the field in place of Shivam Dube. Deepak Chahar has the new ball in his hand and will begin proceedings. Let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, it will not be a straightforward run chase for Kolkata as there is some purchase for the spinners on this wicket. Chennai have depended heavily on their slower bowlers to get the most out of the home conditions and they will need to be at their best in this encounter. The hosts will be looking for early wickets to put the pressure on Kolkata from the word go and if they manage to build some scoreboard pressure with some disciplined bowling, we will be in for a interesting game. The crowd will be behind the boys in Yellow from the very start of this inning and will the team be able to repond? Or will the visitors trot home to an easy win?  We will find out shortly.

Varun Chakaravarthy is up for a chat. He says that it has been a good season for him. Mentions that initially the ball was sticking a bit, but feels that the wicket has become a bit flat. Hopes that it helps the Kolkata batters later on. Claims that last season when he used to bowl the cross-seam bowler, it never used to stick much but is glad it is turning out well for him this time.

On a difficult wicket where spinners were bound to get some purchase, Chennai began on a positive note as they put on a 31-run opening stand. The introduction of spin resulted in Ruturaj Gaikwad losing his wicket after a decent start but Ajinkya Rahane did not allow the scoring rate to come down as they got 52 runs in the Powerplay. With the pace being taken off in the middle overs, the hosts started losing wickets in a bundle as Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, and Moeen Ali were all dismissed in quick succession. They went from 61 for 1 to 72 for 5 and it looked like this would be the night that their strong batting order was exposed. Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja got together and steadied the ship as they looked to take the game deep and put on a 68-run partnership in 53 deliveries with the former remaining unbeaten 2 short of his half-century.

Chennai fought back from a difficult situation and have managed to post a fighting total on the board. Shivam Dube’s knock has helped them post 144 runs on the board which could prove to be decisive on a difficult wicket. This is their lowest score in this edition of the Indian T20 League and they will need a massive effort from their bowlers to get over the line. Kolkata will be mightly pleased with their bowling effort as they managed to maintain control through the innings by taking a chunk of the wickets in the middle overs. Varun Chakaravarthy started well in the Powerplay and chipped in with one right after to get the visitors off to a decent start. Shardul Thakur claimed a wicket in his first over but it was Sunil Narine who turned the tide in their favor with two wickets in one over. Vaibhav Arora claimed one wicket in the last over and did well to restrict the opponents under the 150-run mark.

19.51wd

The crowd has let us know that it is MS Dhoni who makes his way out to the middle.

19.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Ravindra Jadeja could not apply the finishing touches here. Well through the inning for all the 5 wickets so far. The crowd went silent every single time, but now once Varun Chakaravarthy took the catch they are going beserk here, as they know MS Dhoni will be the next man in. Vaibhav Arora follows the batter down leg with a slower bumper. Jadeja goes for the ramp shot but ends up chipping it to short third man. Varun Chakaravarthy makes no mistake there.

19.32

Very full, on middle and leg. Jadeja whips it through the gap at mid-wicket. We all know how quick Jadeja is between the wickets. He comes back for the second run with ease. Is he even aging?

19.21

Short ball now, around middle. Dube pulls it behind square on the leg side. One taken. Jaddu on strike now. Can he roll back the time here?

19.12

Vaibhav Arora nails his yorker this time, Dube only manages to jam it past mid on. The batters get enough time to take two runs though.

Strategic break! The middle phase has been ruled by the Kolkata spinners as they have dented the Chennai batting order massively. The hosts have lost half of their side but they have two set batters at the crease and the fans will be hoping for some fireworks towards the end especially with MS Dhoni yet to come. Kolkata will want to break this partnership at the earliest and they will know that their death bowling has not been at its best so far in the tournament. Strategic break! Chennai were off to a steady start but lost a wicket in the Powerplay. They kept the scoreboard ticking nicely but have had to deal with an in-form Varun Chakaravarthy whose two wickets have helped Kolkata maintain control of the scoring rate. Devon Conway is out in the middle but seems to be struggling with his running and that could definitely affect Chennai's plans. They will hope to keep the Kolkata spinners at bay in the middle phase as they look to make a late surge and get to a decent total. Kolkata will need to keep chipping away at the wickets but will know that the hosts bat deep. Shardul Thakur has been brought into the attack.

The match is set to begin. The crowd has filled in good numbers at Chepauk. Well, MS Dhoni is featuring tonight so this was bound to happen. The Kolkata players make their way out on the field. Followed by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, the opening pair that has stolen plenty of hearts this season. It will be Vaibhav Arora to start with the new ball. Here we go...

Nitish Rana, the captain of Kolkata says they would have batted first as well. Claims that the wicket looks a little sticky so they would have preferred to bat first and set a total so that they could try and defend the target with their spinners. Claims that there has been pressure from the first game until now as this is one of the best competitions in the world and they cannot take any game lightly. Mentions that if any department fails it could cost them the game and they need all three departments to perform well together. Informs they have one change as Vaibhav Arora replaces Anukul Roy in the side.

MS Dhoni, the skipper of Chennai informs that they will bat first. States that as the tournament has progressed the wicket has gotten a bit slower. Tells that he always suggests the batters to assess the conditions quickly. Informs that it is good to keep revisiting what a good score is as the game progresses. Fells that they haven't done enough in the field. Adds that he will be happy even if they improve 5-10 percent in the field, other than that he is delighted with the way his boys have performed until now.

Impact Players for Kolkata -  Anukul Roy, Narayan Jagadeesan, Umesh Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Lockie Ferguson.

Kolkata (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Jason Roy, Nitish Rana (C), Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, Shardul Thakur, Sunil Narine, Vaibhav Arora (In place of Anukul Roy), Harshit Rana, Suyash Sharma (In place of Venkatesh Iyer), Varun Chakaravarthy.

Impact Players for Chennai - Matheesha Pathirana, Nishant Sindhu, Subhranshu Senapati, Shaik Rasheed, Akash Singh.

Chennai (Unchanged Playing XI) - Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (C/WK), Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana.

TOSS - The captains are out in the middle. The coin is flipped into the air and lands in favor of Chennai. They have elected to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Sanjay Manjrekar is out in the center and he says that he does not like to state the obvious but has to inform us that it is very hot at the stadium. He adds that the square boundaries have different dimensions with one side 61 m and the other 70 m so we need to watch out for the left-hand and right-hand combination. He is joined by Matthew Hayden who claims that the pitch looks exactly like it was back in 2010 when he played. Mentions that it is very dry and there is a lack of grass on the surface. Goes on to say that the ball will hold up on this so there will be a lot of spin used. Ends by saying that both sides have loads of spinners so the par score is 160-165 and even though 200 has been achieved four times at this venue, it will not happen today.

Kolkata will be very disappointed with how things have panned out in this campaign and they may just have missed the captaincy along with the batting prowess of Shreyas Iyer in the squad. They have been unable to string together a run of victories and the inconsistency in their performances has their qualification hopes hanging by a thread. They have depended heavily on individual brilliance to get over the line and Nitish Rana has been unable to get the team to gel together with the quality they have in hand. That said they have some devastating batters in their line-up and they have classy mystery spinners who could play a massive role on the Chepauk wicket. Their pace bowlers have been very expensive and their lack of death bowling options has cost them closely-fought encounters. Will they be able to keep their season alive with a crucial win? Or will Chennai dominate their opponents in home conditions? We will find out soon. Stay tuned for the toss and team updates.

Chennai continue to show the world why they are considered the juggernaut of franchise T20 cricket as they look destined for yet another playoff appearance. They started the competition strong but a minor stumble towards the middle phase had their fans sweating but two wins in a row have managed to calm down the nerves in the fan base and the dressing room. MS Dhoni continues to be a colossal figure on the field and he has not lost any of his leadership skills as he looks to hunt for his fifth Indian T20 League title. Their success has historically been founded on the good work done by their batters along with their spinners and both departments have maintained their performance in this edition. The return of Deepak Chahar has got some solidity back to their pace bowling unit that has been carried wonderfully by the youngsters in the squad. They will hunt for a win that confirms their qualification for the next stage and helps take them to the top of the table.

Hello, and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen to our coverage of match number 61 in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League as we are about to witness an enthralling encounter between two teams with different ambitions in the game. We are at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium as Chennai welcome Kolkata to a ground renowned for being hostile towards their opponents. The home crowd will be hoping their side can condemn their opponents to another loss in this edition. The last time the two teams faced each other at Eden Gardens, Chennai posted a mammoth total of 235 on the board and won by a margin of 49 runs. The momentum is definitely with the home side as they look to get their third win on a trot in the quest for the top two places on the table while on the other hand, Kolkata need to win their remaining two games to give themselves any hope of survival.

... MATCH DAY ...

It is now time for Match number 61 in the India T20 League 2023 as Chennai go up against Kolkata at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The hosts, have enjoyed a fruitful season and it has been a positive return to their home ground. Chennai are in the top four and a win here would almost certainly seal their playoff berth. They have a stable batting line-up with the likes of Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane shining bright. This has been then backed up by the power-hitting of Shivam Dube. On the bowling front, Ravindra Jadeja has been highly consistent with Tushar Deshpande being amongst the leading wicket-takers and then Matheesha Pathirana has been phenomenal at the death. They will certainly be a difficult side to beat at home. On the other hand, Kolkata have blown hot and cold all season but have somehow kept themselves in the playoffs hunt. They do need to win remaining all games though and it won't be an easy ask at all. Skipper Nitish Rana along with the likes of Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh have led the charge with the bat and Jason Roy too have played well. Their bowling has struggled somewhat with Sunil Narine and Umesh Yadav being out of form. Varun Chakaravarthy though has been a diamond in the rough for them and young leggie Suyash Sharma has also bowled brilliantly. It is Chennai who have the edge in this one but Kolkata can take down any side on a given day. A cracker of a contest awaits. Who are you backing?
