Right then, that is it from this high-scoring game in the 2023 Indian T20 League and it has been quite entertaining. Chennai continue to prove why this venue is their fortress as they claim their first win while Lucknow put on quite a fight to make a game of this. The action in the 16th edition of this competition continues on Tuesday, the 4th of April as Delhi will host the reigning champions from Gujarat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but our build-up will begin much sooner. Until then, goodbye and cheers!

Moenn Ali is the Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling as he took 4 wickets for 28 runs and chipped in with 19 off 13 balls with the bat. He says that it was a tough game as the opposition have big hitters. Mentions that he tried to bowl as he does in Test cricket and get the ball to turn. Explains that you do not want to get up to batters as it could be dangerous and the bowling partnership with Mitchell Santner was good as he also chipped in with a wicket. Claims that MS Dhoni knows when to bowl his players and an off-spinner can still bowl to right-handers as the pressure is on batters to hit towards long boundaries. Ends by stating that he is not going to bowl all the time as Ravindra Jadeja is also there so they will take it game by game.

MS Dhoni the captain of Chennai says that it was a terrific game and a high scoring one. Adds that it was a perfect game that could have happened on their return to the stadium. Shares that he thought the wicket will behave much slower but was surprised that batters were able to play their shots in the second inning. States that they will need to see how the wicket behaves in the next six games. Shares that the fast bowling needs to improve and adds that they need to bowl in those areas where there are fielders. States that the bowlers need to keep an eye on what the opposition bowlers are doing and they need to bowl fewer wides and no balls. On his two sixes, he says that in such high-scoring games, those one or two hits do matter a lot.

KL Rahul the skipper of Lucknow starts by saying that it was not an ideal start with the ball and adds that the wicket was a bit sticky with movement on offer. Feels that they did not bowl in the right areas and the opposition batters capitalized on that momentum. Credits Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway for batting the way they did. Reckons that conceding 70-odd runs in the Powerplay probably cost them the game. On Kyle Mayers, he says that he has been in a good form for West Indies and is glad about the way he is batting. On Ravi Bishnoi, he says that he puts his hands up when everything is against them. Mentions that it is good for them that different individuals have shouldered responsibility in both games. Ends by saying that they had a good start with the bat and kept pressing on which is what they wanted to do.

Time for the presentations...

Mitchell Santner is up for a chat and he says that it was a pretty good wicket to bat on and the batters scored lots of runs in the Powerplay so it was their job to slow things down. Claims that it gets easier to make plans with the boundary dimension being the same on this ground so he can focus on the bowling while back in New Zealand it is different. Mentions that he tries to do his best but the wicket was a little flatter than he expected and as the tournament goes ahead, he hopes to get more purchase off the pitch. Ends by saying that it has been a while since they came back to the ground and at that time one stand was shut, so it is good to have a full stadium as the crowd has been amazing.

In the first essay, Chennai scored their highest total in the Powerplay in the Indian T20 League accumulating 79 runs as Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his good form with yet another half-century. Devon Conway fell three short of his fifty and cameos from Shivam Dube, Moeen Ali, and Ambati Rayudu pushed them beyond the 200-run mark. Ravi Bishnoi was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets for 28 runs in his four overs and Mark Wood claimed three as well but was expensive. The rest of the bowlers were dispatched all over the park and left their batters with an uphill task to make it two wins in a row.

MS Dhoni opted to use his pacers in the first five overs on a pitch that was slowing down considerably and the ploy backfired as Deepak Chahar, Ben Stokes, and Tushar Deshpande proved to be very expensive. The introduction of spin in the form of Moeen Ali got them back into the game and Mitchell Santner claimed one in his first over as well. Moeen Ali continued to cause havoc chipping in with wickets and ended with a four-fer under his belt. Tushar Deshpande took two wickets in the death overs and held his nerve in the final over to help his team across the finish line. The skipper will be hoping for a more disciplined performance from his bowlers going forward as they conceded 18 runs in extras.

Lucknow got off the best possible start in the run chase as Kyle Mayers got them off to a flier, racing to his fifty in just 21 balls but departed inside the Powerplay. They still managed to post 80 runs in the first six overs and looked well on course to achieve the target. However, the wickets of Deepak Hooda and KL Rahul de-railed their efforts and they found themselves behind in the game once again. Krunal Pandya could not add much to the scoreboard but cameos from Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, and Krishnappa Gowtham kept them in the hunt but the target continued to remain out of their reach and they would have liked some of their batters to carry on after the start they got.

What an entertaining game we have witnessed with the tide turning both ways through the game! It is the home crowd that has reason to cheer with their team sealing a 12-run victory on their return to this venue after four years! Chennai have managed to hold their nerves and in the end, their batting effort was good enough to get them their first win of the competition. Lucknow are unable to continue their winning momentum and suffer their first loss of this season but will want to brush this off as soon as possible.

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The Chennai players make their way out to the middle followed by the two Lucknow openers. KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers will open the innings for Lucknow. Deepak Chahar will start with the new ball for Chennai. Also, Chennai have brought on Tushar Deshpande as the Impact Player in place of Ambati Rayudu. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Chennai will certainly be the happier side at halfway mark, having posted the highest score of this year's Indian T20 League. On the other hand, Lucknow batters now have a challenging task ahead of them. Will their batters rise to the challenge? We shall find out shortly. Back in a bit for the chase...

Devon Conway is in for a quick chat. He says that it was a great start for them and the way Rutu played in the first six took the pressure off him. Adds that it is always good seeing him striking the ball well as he is really strong and holds his shape well along with using good bats. Reckons that bowling the slower ball into the wicket will be a good option and with the spinners, some balls skidded on and some got stuck in the wicket so they need to keep good lines. Claims that it is a very special feeling coming to this ground and the crowd is special as it is a great atmosphere. Goes on to say that seeing MS Dhoni what he does best and the crowd going wild was amazing. Ends by saying that the skipper just wants them to go out there and enjoy.

After KL Rahul called it right and opted to bowl first, he needed his bowlers to start well and get some early inroads. However, they were unable to do so as the pacers kept missing their lines and lengths consistently. This start forced him to bring spinners in the Powerplay but even they could not find any success. Ravi Bishnoi was brought on in the 10th over and he provided a breakthrough on the very first ball. He helped Lucknow tighten the screws somewhat by keeping things quiet at his end. However, he found no support from the other end and that meant, Lucknow could not finish well with the ball. Ravi Bishnoi was by far the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 28 from his four overs. Mark Wood also accounted for 3 wickets but was on the expensive side.

Wow! This has been some homecoming by Chennai! A final over flourish by MS Dhoni helps them end up with 217 runs on the board. Playing in front of the home crowd after a long gap, Chennai were off to a perfect start courtesy of their opening pair. Ruturaj Gaikwad in particular was at his fluent best and found boundaries at will. Chennai raced to 50 in no time and once, Devon Conway found his touch, he started matching Gaikwad shot for shot. The duo put its side in a commanding position with a 110-run opening stand. Both set batters departed in quick succession but Shivam Dube and Ambati Rayudu ensured Chennai stayed ahead in the game. In the final over, MS Dhoni walked out to the centre and smashed two sixes off his first two balls to help Chennai touch the 215-run mark.

Chennai lose their 7th wicket now but they will know they have a massive total on the board.

19.36

SIX! Back-to-back boundaries! This has been dispatched to the third tier! This is bowled short once again and at the batter. MS Dhoni pulls this over deep square leg for six more runs! This is what the crowd has come to witness! Vintage stuff! 5000 runs in the Indian T20 League for MSD!

Ravindra Jadeja looks to pull this away but hit this high into the night sky without much distance. Ravi Bishnoi comes in from the ropes at deep mid-wicket and settles under the ball to take a well-judged catch. Ravindra Jadeja struggled at the wicket and has to depart as Chennai lose their sixth wicket.

It will be Mark Wood to bowl the final over. Lucknow have brought on Ayush Badoni as the Impact Player in place of Avesh Khan.

A slight delay with a stray dog running around the field and the ground staff working very hard to get him off. Now we are all set for the game to start. Let's play...

Ben Stokes is in for a flash interview. He starts by saying that he expects a good atmosphere here and is looking forward to getting going. Mentions that it is important to accept the role given in the new franchise and perform well with the given responsibility. On bowling, he says that everything is coming on nicely and he might bowl in this game. States that is great to be back with Stephen Fleming. Ends by saying that he has not played many games here but expects spin to come into play.

MS Dhoni the captain of Chennai says that it has been a long time since they played at home. Adds that even though this competition is on for long, there haven’t been too many games played at this venue. Informs that they are unchanged. Mentions that the first six overs are important and at various phases, they need to re-evaluate the total and see what we can put on the board.

KL Rahul the skipper of Lucknow says that they will bowl first and adds that they just want to have a target in front. Shares that it was a good performance in the last game against Delhi. Informs that Jaydev Unadkat makes way for Yash Thakur. Reckons that it will be important to assess the conditions and bowl at the right lengths. Ends by saying that will look for early wickets and feels that there might be dew later on in the game.

PITCH REPORT - Danny Morrison is near the deck. He starts by informing that straight boundaries are a bit longer than square boundaries. States that the winning score could be around 165 and adds that chasing could be challenging here but not too much since it's a night game.  Feels that spin might play a major role here but if batters target the short boundaries, there are enough runs to be had.

On the other hand, Lucknow registered a convincing win in their opening game against Delhi. Kyle Mayers was the star with the bat while other batters batted around him to post a daunting total. Mark Wood stood out in the bowling department with a five-wicket haul with support from Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi. Will Lucknow make it two wins out of two? Or will Chennai mark their return home with a win? Let’s find out. Toss and team news coming up shortly...

Chennai come into this game on the back of a narrow defeat in their opening encounter against Gujarat. Ruturaj Gaikwad played a lone hand and he will require support from the likes of Devon Conway, Ben Stokes and Ambati Rayudu. With the ball, the pace duo of Deepak Chahar and Rajvardhan Hangargekar will hold the key, with the spin trio of Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali to follow.
