Right then, that is it from the first game of a doubleheader Saturday and it is Chennai who break their three-game winless streak and storm to 2nd place on the points table. The second game of the day between Delhi and Bangalore is about to get underway and you can simply switch tabs and catch our coverage of that game. Cheers!

Matheesha Pathirana is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant spell of bowling.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai says that they didn't bat well enough and put on a total for the bowlers to defend and adds that games like this one can happen and it was just an off day with the bat. On the batting order, he says that they lost Tilak Varma and they thought they needed Indian batters in the middle overs to counter the spinners but they lost 3 wickets in the Powerplay. Mentions that Piyush Chawla has been bowling really well and the other bowlers need to rally around him and they can take a lot of learning from this game. Says that this year there is not much of a home advantage and it is all about putting your best foot forward and ends by saying that the next two games are pretty big for them.

Earlier in the game, MS Dhoni won the toss and put Mumbai into bat first on the wicket that looked good for a score of around 170-180 runs. Mumbai tweaked their opening pair as Cameron Green came in place of Rohit Sharma and that back-fired. Their top three fell inside the Powerplay and there was a lot of work to do for the middle order against an in-form spin attack in the middle overs. Young Nehal Wadhera played a solid knock and even got to his fifty and apart from Suryakumar Yadav no one else gave him much support. For Chennai, their front-line pacers, Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande picked up wickets at the start and Ravindra Jadeja bowled brilliantly in the middle phase. This was all backed up by Matheesha Pathirana who picked up three wickets in the latter stages and didn't even concede a boundary. With just 140 runs needed to win, Chennai paced their chase perfectly and got the job done with 14 balls to spare.

Mumbai will be pretty disappointed with that performance as they didn't bat well in the Powerplay and the pacers were off the mark as well. With just 139 runs on the board, the likes of Cameron Green and Arshad Khan got smashed for runs in the first two overs of the game and that put them on the back foot completely. Piyush Chawla bowled brilliantly yet again and picked up a couple of wickets as well with the debutant, Raghav Goyal holding his own as well. In the end, they just didn't have enough runs on the board and didn't have the wicket-taking ability with the quicks to cause any damage.

Chennai have breezed through the chase but this victory was really set up by their bowlers as they restricted Mumbai to a below-par total. Like most of this season, the opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway got Chennai off to a quick start as they added on 46 runs for the first wicket. It was then Ajinkya Rahane who picked up a few boundaries and Chennai were cruising through the chase. Ambati Rayudu though failed to make much of an impact once again but Shivam Dube did get those big hits away to ensure that there wasn't a hiccup toward the end.

A very, very comfortable victory for Chennai against a side that has been their nemesis on their home ground and for the first time since 2010, Chennai beat Mumbai at the MA Chidambaram stadium.

16.11

Strategic-Break! This game has got away from Mumbai now as they need something really special to get back in the game. Chennai have cruised through this run chase and now they will want to finish things as soon as possible to help their NRR as well. Akash Madhwal to bowl after the break.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway are the two openers for Chennai. Mumbai uses their Impact Player as Raghav Goyal comes in for Suryakumar Yadav to make his debut. Also, Cameron Green to start the proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Mumbai have posted a below-par total and will need every bit of their bowling resources to defend this one. Chennai with the kind of batting that they have will be pretty confident to gun this down and they know that they just need to bat sensibly and the two points will be theirs. Let's see how the chase unfolds.

Tushar Deshpande, the new Purple Cap holder for now is up for a quick chat. He says the surface looked good initially but as the day went on it became better for the bowlers. Adds that it is all about bowling good lines and lengths and not overthinking. Reckons that they simply need to bat well and jokingly ends by saying that he shouldn't be talking much about batting anyways.

Chennai, on the other hand, should be pretty happy with their bowling effort. Tushar Deshpande got rid of Green in his first over, and then Deepak Chahar removed Rohit and Kishan in the same over. They continued to build pressure on the batters and did not give much away. It was Ravindra Jadeja once again who got the crucial wicket of SKY. Wadhera did trouble them a bit, but it was Matheesha Pathirana who ran through Mumbai's lower middle order and ended up with three wickets.

Mumbai got off to the worst possible start, losing three wickets inside the first three overs. They promoted Cameron Green to open but that did not work out and Rohit Sharma at number 3 also could not trouble the scorers nor did Ishan Kishan make much impact. Then Mumbai promoted young Nehal Wadhera up the order and he grabbed this opportunity with both hands. Firstly he built up a crucial partnership of 55 runs with SKY to steady their innings before the latter got dismissed. However, that did not affect Wadhera as he continued to rack up the runs and registered his maiden Indian T20 League fifty. The stand between him and Tristan Stubbs of 54 runs took them to a respectable total.

What a last over from Matheesha Pathirana! He only conceded five runs and picked up two wickets to restrict Mumbai to 139. This was the story of this innings as Chennai were able to pick up the wickets and except for an excellent knock from Nehal Wadhera, no other batter looked comfortable. The home side will be the happier going into the break.

OUT! TAKEN! Ravindra Jadeja hangs on to a difficult chance and Matheesha Pathirana picks up his third wicket of the innings, a brilliant spell from him yet again. This is full and wide, slinging away, Tristan Stubbs tries to get under it and lift it over the cover fence but mistimes it completely. The ball goes high and just over the cover region. Jadeja comes racing in from the point region and takes it with both hands.

19.31

Good stop! Full and at the stumps, Jofra Archer drives it straight back and the bowler sticks out his foot to make the stop. The batters scamper across for a single.

19.22

Jofra Archer walks out to bat now.

19.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Ruturaj Gaikwad manages to hold on and Arshad Khan has to walk back. Matheesha Pathirana bowls this one full and wide and gets it in the blockhole. Khan hangs deep in his crease and tries to drive it over the cover region. Khan ends up slicing it wide of the man at sweeper where Gaikwad moves to his left and hangs on to the catch.

Who will bowl the last over? It will be Matheesha Pathirana (3-0-10-1).

18.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Tim David fails to make an impact and Mumbai struggling to get to 150 here. Tushar Deshpande keeps the length full but brings the ball closer to the off pole and bowls it at over 140 clicks as well. David shuffles slightly across the stumps and looks to whack it right back over the bowler's head. David mistimes it high and toward long off where Ruturaj Gaikwad comes in and takes a safe catch.

Arshad Khan comes out to the middle now.

18.31wd

WIDE! An attempted slower ball, spilled beyond the tramline outside off and a wide is called.

Tim David is the next man in.

17.3W

OUT! BOWLED'EM! Matheesha Pathirana hits the 'bullseye,' and sends Nehal Wadhera packing. Wadhera pre-meditates a bit as he starts shuffling past the off stump. Pathirana sees this and does well to nail the yorker on middle and leg at 145.7 clicks. Wadhera misses the flick as the ball is just too quick and ends up playing all around a straight ball. The ball crashes into the base of the stumps and it will be the end of a good knock from Wadhera.

17.21

Full and straight at 144.6 clicks, this is heaved away toward deep mid-wicket for a single.

Strategic break! Just as Chennai lose their second wicket, the umpires call for a breather. This has been a fast start with the bat from the home side and with just 59 runs needed off 66 balls, this should be an easy victory for Chennai.

Chennai will not be unhappy with how things are going but they will want to a get rid of SKY as soon as possible because they know that he can take the game away from them. We are all set for the game to begin! The two umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of Chennai. Surprisingly, it will be Cameron Green to open the innings alongside Ishan Kishan for Mumbai. Deepak Chahar has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai says that they have had a couple of good games and it is about continuing the momentum. Adds that they have played well but there are a few areas of concern which they have addressed. Mentions that there are new players coming in at the start of the tournament but having played 9 games, they know their strengths and they have picked the side on the basis of that. Informs that they have made a couple of changes with Raghav Goyal coming in to make his debut and will replace Kumar Kartikeya and also Tristan Stubbs comes in for Tilak Varma who is slightly injured.

Chennai's skipper, MS Dhoni says that they will bowl first. Adds that a bit of rain is scheduled so that is a reason and the wicket also looks good and they want Mumbai to set a target. Tells that they have done well except for a few slip-ups here and there. Mentions that they have improved every game and now as we are in the second half of the season they need to finish games professionally. Informs they are unchanged.

Impact Players nominated by Mumbai -  Kumar Kartikeya, Ramandeep Singh, Dewald Brevis, Raghav Goyal, Vishnu Vinod.

Mumbai (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan (WK), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav (In for Kumar Kartikeya), Nehal Wadhera, Tim David, Tristan Stubbs (In for Tilak Varma), Arshad Khan, Jofra Archer, Piyush Chawla, Akash Madhwal.

Impact Players nominated by Chennai -  Ambati Rayudu, Mitchell Santner, Subhranshu Senapati, Shaik Rasheed, Akash Singh.

Chennai (Unchanged Playing XI) - Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (C/WK), Deepak Chahar, Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana.

TOSS - The two captains are out in the middle and the flip of the coin lands in favor of Chennai. They will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Pommie Mbangwa and Aaron Finch are pitchside. Mbangwa says that it is a big ground but on one side it is 61 meters and 70-plus on the other side with 73 meters straight. Finch adds that the pitch is hard as a rock and has fewer cracks than previous surfaces. Mentions that it will be a touch slow and low earlier. Mbangwa adds that it is humid but it is overcast as well which should incline the skipper winning the toss to bowl first.

Mumbai, on the other hand will be flying high after an incredible run-chase in their previous game against Punjab. They know that their strength is batting and they are backing it. SKY looks in amazing form while Ishan Kishan also got his touch back. The Australian duo of Cameron Green and Tim David have also took them out of tough situations. Their bowling is a bit bleak as only Piyush Chawla has been consistent. Jofra Archer is still trying to find his rhythm but they have signed Chris Jordan who can help them massively with their death bowling. They will have the previous defeat against Chennai in mind and will hope to avenge it. Will they be able to do it? Or will Chennai prove to be too strong for them again? We will find out soon. Toss and team news in a bit.

Chennai have one of the most experienced batting line-up starting from their opening duo of Gaikwad-Conway to the in-form Rahane and hard-hitting Dube in the middle order and then Dhoni as the finisher. They would be happy that Deepak Chahar was back after injury in the last game and he will be crucial for them while the spinners have always done a decent job for them. They have already exploited Mumbai's weakness once in this season and will want to do the double over them.

Hello and a warm welcome folks! The biggest rivalry in the Indian T20 League is ready for another chapter as Chennai are ready to host Mumbai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in a blockbuster clash. The home side have been one of the teams to beat this season under the leadership of MS Dhoni while the away team have found their form just at the right moment in the season. Whenever these two sides meet there is no shortage of entertainment and we can expect nothing less here.

... MATCH DAY ...

Every sport has its own set of rivalries and cricket is no different in that aspect as several international as well as domestic teams prioritize results in these encounters more than others. While some of these rivalries are based on location for example India vs Pakistan or a tie between Australia and New Zealand, others are based purely on history and achievement as we witness in The Ashes. The Indian T20 League has its share of cricketing feuds and while the 16th edition has seen some new teams develop this equation, there is one that has blossomed over the years between the two most successful sides in the competition. We arrive at match number 49 where four-time champions Chennai play hosts to five-time trophy-holders Mumbai at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in a game that has a lot more at stake than just two points. Both teams have registered five wins and four losses but the hosts have played one game more which was washed out against Lucknow as both teams shared a point each. The visitors are just one point below Chennai on the table and a win in this game will see them break into the top four. They are a team that works on momentum as seen in this edition where they lost their first two games but won three on a trot after that. Two more losses in a row after that pegged them back slightly but are now on a two-game winning streak and will be hoping to keep this run going into the business end of the competition. Chennai were inconsistent in the start but went on a run that took them top of the table after 7 games but two losses and an abandoned game in their last three fixtures have them fighting against several teams for a playoff spot. The two sides faced each other early in the competition and it was the team from the south that registered a comfortable 7-wicket win at the Wankhede Stadium and the boys in blue will be baying for blood in this encounter to get one back. Mumbai have a formidable batting order with Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Cameron Green, and Tim David all playing a part in helping them register wins. Their only concern will be the form of their skipper Rohit Sharma who has had a season to forget so far and they may look to tweak their batting line-up by sending him lower down the order. Even though their batting performances have been remarkable recently they will be extremely worried about their bowling contingent which not only looks depleted but also seems to be far from their best. Piyush Chawla has been their torch bearer claiming important wickets but if they wish to be clinical they need Jofra Archer to come back to his best and the death-over bowlers to be more economical. Chennai's good run coincided with the brilliance of their batters especially the openers Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad who have been in sublime touch. They have a ridiculously long batting order with MS Dhoni coming in to bat at number 8. Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube have been scoring big runs at a brisk rate with Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ambati Rayudu shuffling with their skipper for the finisher's role. The return of Deepak Chahar has boosted the pace bowling unit but are yet to see him reach full-match fitness although, Tushar Deshpande, Akash Singh, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, and Matheesha Pathirana have done well in his absence when called upon. Maheesh Theekshana is a wonderful spinner but offers very little in other aspects of the game and the hosts may consider bringing in Mitchell Santner but if there is any captain that back his players through difficult periods, it is MS Dhoni. He is loved all over the country as we have seen when Chennai plays away from home and still has a sea of yellow waiting for him to arrive. The lads from Mumbai have their share of supporters but will find it very difficult to spot any blue when they enter hostile territory and this has all the makings of yet another enticing battle between these two teams. Which side are you on?
