Commentary

That's it from this game then! The final game of the round-robin is on Sunday, 12th of November and it is a clash between India and Netherlands. The game begins at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) but our build-up will begin much sooner. Until then, take care and goodbye!

The captain of England, Jos Buttler says it has been a disappointing tournament. Adds they did well today and he is happy about it. Mentions Ben Stokes is a special player and they missed him at the start but they are a good team and they showed what they're capable of. Adds Willey has been really good, this is a special side and he is sure they'll push from here.

Pakistan's skipper Babar Azam says that it was a very disappointing defeat. Feels that it would have been a different story had they won the South Africa game. Mentions that they gave their best but could not get the momentum after a couple of losses. Feels that they gave away 20-30 runs extra. Reckons that spinners lacked wickets in the middle phase which did not help them. States that they will sit together and discuss their mistakes. Ends by informing that he will do his best to pitch in with his experience.

David Willey is the Player of the Match in his last England appearance. He says that the tournament did not go to plan which was disappointing. Says that to be able to perform and get to 100 wickets was a nice way to finish. Mentions that they have massive talent in the dressing room but they have underperformed which is disappointing. Feels that not many players get to walk out on their own terms. Shares that it has been a proud feeling every time he pulled on an England shirt. Ends by saying that even though he did not play in the T20 World Cup in  Australia, that moment was very special.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Pakistan on the other hand, just kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They were always on the back foot because of that. A few of their batters got off to starts but none went on to make it big. They were outplayed by a better side on this day.

A thumping win for England to secure their Champions trophy spot. A complete performance from them which had been missing in this tournament. It was their batting which put on a really good show in the first half. The likes of Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes got them to a score which we felt was over par and then it was the bowlers who came to the fore. David Willey was excellent with the new ball and Gus Atkinson and the spinners continued the good work. It was a total team effort from the English in an important game.

Commentary

We are back for the second essay. The two umpires and the players have made their way out to the middle. It will be Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique to open the innings for Pakistan. David Willey is at the top of his mark and will get proceedings underway with the new ball for England. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, England have a formidable total on the board and one feels that they have their noses slightly ahead at the halfway mark. For those eternal optimists still hoping for a miracle, Pakistan will need to gun down this total in 6.4 overs to make it to the semis. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

As he has done so often, Shaheen Afridi set the tone early for Pakistan with a first-over maiden. At the other end, Haris Rauf's horror show at the World Cup continued as he leaked 31 runs in his first three overs. It was Iftikhar Ahmed who drew first blood for Pakistan before Rauf struck in his second spell. They were not able to capitalise on the opportunity of bowling at new batters, and the dropped catch of Ben Stokes by Shaheen Afridi did them no favour. Having removed Stokes and Root in quick succession, Pakistan fought back exceptionally well, led by Haris Rauf's death-bowling masterclass. In the final over, Mohammad Wasim nailed his yorkers to help Pakistan finish strongly with the ball.

After Jos Buttler won the flip of the coin, he had no hesitation in electing to put runs on the board. It was a solid start for England as Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan saw through the difficult phase successfully to stitch an 82-run opening stand. Malan departed on 31, but Bairstow notched up his second fifty of this World Cup before being dismissed on 59. Joe Root and Ben Stokes then got together and took the innings forward on a surface that was not easy for the incoming batter. Stokes, the aggressor of the two batters, fell 16 runs short of his hundred, while Root, who had struggled for fluency for most of his innings, got out on 60. Jos Buttler and Harry Brook had full licence to tee off from ball one, and they sure did, chipping in with handy cameos. Playing in his last game for England, David Willey struck a few lusty blows in the final over to take England over 335.

An eventful end to the innings, and England finish with 337 on the board! At one stage in the game, they were well-placed to go over 350 but they will be fairly pleased with this total. As for Pakistan, their slim chance of making it through to the next stage diminished as soon as the flip of the coin landed in Jos Buttler's favour and he opted to bat first. Nonetheless, they have fought back well with the ball to limit England to a chasable total.

FOUR! MAKE THAT THREE IN THE OVER! We probably jinxed Rauf when we wrote he has started well. He goes for plenty after that. This is bread and butter for Malan. Outside off, he leans into it and caresses it through covers. End of a massive over for England.

3.51

Now a run. Good sensible batting. Outside off, this is guided down to third man for one.

3.44

FOUR! That is a poor delivery and Bairstow puts it away. Consecutive boundaries for him. Full and on the pads, this is clipped down to fine leg. This is just the kind of over England needed.

3.34

FOUR! FINDS THE GAP! This time he waits for the ball to come to him. It is on a length and just outside off, Rauf opens the face and guides it past point. No chance for anyone here.

Beaten! Goes wide of the crease and gets this one to angle in, on a good length, on off, Dawid Malan gets rooted in the crease as he looks to block but plays inside the line. There is some interest again from the Pakistan players as Mohammad Rizwan pouches it but they do not go for the review.

2.20

2.11

Oh...a chance goes down! Full and at the stumps, Dawid Malan goes pushing it out in front and ends up chipping it back towards the bowler. Shaheen Afridi gets into a good position in his follow-through but gets deceived by the lack of pace and the ball eludes his left hand.

Jaffa to end the over! Going away, on a good length, around off, Jonny Bairstow has a feel for the delivery again and gets beaten on the outside edge. Haris Rauf feels Bairstow has nicked it and almost starts celebrating but there is not much interest from the infield players.

1.50

Half a shout for LBW! Seaming in, on a good length, on off, Jonny Bairstow gets forward to defend it with a straight bat and gets an inside edge onto the front pad again. Babar Azam seemed interested but not much of an appeal from the rest of the players.

1.40

Almost sneaked through! Goes full again and angling in, on off and middle, Jonny Bairstow leaves a big gap between bat and pad as he tries to drive down the ground. Thankfully, he gets an inside edge onto the front pad.

1.30

Beauty! On the fifth stump line, on a good length, Jonny Bairstow has a nibble at the delivery but the ball nips away and zips past his outside edge.

1.20

Much fuller this time, on off and middle, driven with a straight bat to mid off by Jonny Bairstow.

1.21wd

WIDE! Loses his radar again as this one shapes way outside off, on a length, Jonny Bairstow lets it through for a wide.

1.10

Much better! On the fourth stump line, on a good length, Jonny Bairstow watches it all the way and withdraws his bat at the last moment.

1.15wd

FIVE WIDES! A wayward start from Haris Rauf! A loosener as this is bowled way down leg, left alone by Jonny Bairstow and it is way out of reach for Mohammad Rizwan as well.

0.20

Much fuller and a tempter for the batter, swinging away, outside off, Dawid Malan goes pushing at the delivery away from the body and gets beaten on the outside edge.

0.10

Starts off on a good length, from over the wicket, in the channel on off, shaping away, Dawid Malan looks to defend from the crease and does well not to have a feel for the delivery as the ball goes past his outside edge.

We are done with the national anthems and are ready to get underway. The two umpires make their way out to the middle followed by the Pakistan players. It will be Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow to open the innings for England. Shaheen Afridi will start with the new ball for Pakistan. Off we go...

We are moments away from the first ball but before that, the two sets of players and match officials will line up for the national anthems. It will be Pakistan's national anthem first followed by the national anthem of England.

The skipper of Pakistan, Babar Azam says that they'll try their best and then see what to do. Adds he wanted to bat first too but they are now looking forward to this. Informs they have one change with Shadab Khan coming in for Hasan Ali.

England's captain Jos Buttler says that they will bat first. Mentions that it looks a good wicket but feels that it is a little bit dry. Adds that they want to make first use of it. Informs that they are going with the same team. Shares that it was nice to break the losing streak and want to leave India with heads held high. On David Willey, he says that he has been a great performer and hopes that he will have a great day.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Agha Salman, Shadab Khan (In for Hasan Ali), Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Wasim, Haris Rauf.

England (Unchanged Playing XI) - Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (C/WK), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid.

TOSS - England have won the toss and elected to BAT!

England on the other hand, have had a World Cup to forget so far. A win in the last game has given them something to play for. They need to win this game if they are to secure their place in the Champions Trophy. They'll head into the game with confidence but they are up against a strong Pakistan side who also have their tails up. Stay tuned for the toss and teams.

Pakistan's chances of going through to the semis are as slim as it gets. They need a win by an unthinkable margin. We though have seen plenty of surprises in this World Cup so far but this will be the biggest of them all if they do manage to go through. However, we will be seeing Pakistan play with a lot of intent and this could well be very entertaining.

It is the second last game of the round robin and it is a clash between Pakistan and England. Both sides are playing for different reasons. Pakistan, to sneak into the top 4 whereas, England to ensure their qualification into the Champions Trophy. So a lot is at stake and these are two exciting teams, we can expect a cracker.

... MATCH DAY ...

We are at match number 44 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 where England go up against Pakistan at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This match is a very important one for England as their qualification for the 2025 Champion's Trophy hangs in the balance. They have had a campaign to forget as they have lost 6 out of the 8 matches so far. They must have gained some confidence after winning their last game against the Netherlands quite comfortably. Their batting unit regained their form with Dawid Malan scoring at a good rate. After Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Harry Brook were dismissed it was again Ben Stokes who rescued them from a collapse. He scored a fine century and kept the scoreboard going. Chris Woakes supported him down the order and ensured that the English put up a good total on the board. In the bowing unit, the spinners, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali rose to the occasion and took 3 wickets each. David Willey and Chris Woakes were very economical in the early overs and even took a few wickets. It was a good performance by England but they will have to work on a few things for their match against Pakistan. They will hope to win this one and end the tournament on a good note also moving up a few places on the points table will mean that they will have qualified for the Champion's Trophy. Pakistan on the other hand will be playing this match to end their tournament with a win. Their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals are next to impossible with the current scenario. To qualify Pakistan will have to beat England by a margin of more than 287 runs or chase the target with 284 balls to spare. Pakistan have had a rough middle patch of the tournament and despite a strong start, they could not finish in the top 4. However, they showed their strength in their last game against the Kiwis. They had to chase 402 on the board with the target of improving their NRR. The bowlers failed to take timely wickets but Mohammad Wasim shone out as he scalped 3. It was a rain-affected match but Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam made sure that they stayed well over the DLS score. Unfortunately for the Kiwis, the rain stopped the match and Pakistan clinched an important win. With Fakhar Zaman in form and back in the side, their batting order looks much stronger. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are dangerous in the middle order with Iftikhar Ahmed and Saud Shakeel to provide a strong finish. Their pace attack hasn't been very effective in these conditions, especially with Haris Rauf not being able to take wickets. Mohammad Wasim looks in good rhythm which will help Shaheen Afridi to bowl freely. This is expected to be an exciting clash where both teams will look to end their tournament with a win. England has much more riding on this match compared to Pakistan. Which team are you supporting?
