Commentary

Right then, that wraps up this second T20I where England emerged as the dominant force over the visiting Pakistan! Next up is the third T20I, scheduled for the 28th of May, Tuesday at 11pm IST (5.30pm GMT). Be sure to join us early for all the pre-match build-up! Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Jos Buttler is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding knock of 84 off 51 balls. He says the team was focused on winning the game and there were great performances from everybody. Appreciates Jofra Archer and says that it was a really positive performance from him and is glad that he is back. Further adds that they have to give him games but also be mindful about resting him. Concludes by appreciating Chris Jordan for the way he bowled the last two overs and says it was exceptional stuff.

Babar Azam, the skipper of Pakistan, says that they bowled well but lacked in batting. Adds that they failed in stitching partnerships and lauds Fakhar Zaman's efforts. Shares that their top four are flexible and the order changes depending on the form.  Further says that the way Fakhar batted was impressive. Feels that if his partnership with Fakhar had lasted a few overs more, things would have been different. Lauds the bowling effort of Imad Wasim and adds that he is a very clever bowler and has improved a lot in batting too. Tells that they are not much concerned with the form of Shadab Khan. Ends by saying that their team is more or less settled ahead of the World Cup.

Time for the Presentation Ceremony..

Earlier in the game, Pakistan began strongly with Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim exerting control over the initial overs, resulting in the early dismissal of Phil Salt. However, the rest of the bowlers struggled to find their marks, allowing Jos Buttler to dominate with a masterclass in batting. Shadab Khan, in particular, couldn't find his rhythm and conceded lots of runs. At the halfway mark in the innings, the dismissal of Will Jacks brought Jonny Bairstow to the crease, who launched a blistering attack with a quickfire cameo. Despite the onslaught, Pakistan staged a remarkable comeback in the death overs, chipping 5 English wickets for just 25 runs and bringing the game back into balance. Jos Buttler's 84 off 51 balls was a display of pure class, anchoring England's innings. For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi was the standout bowler with 3 wickets, while Imad Wasim was exceptional too, taking 2 wickets for just 19 runs in his 4 overs.

Pakistan got off to a disastrous start, with Mohammad Rizwan falling in the very first over, quickly followed by Saim Ayub, leaving them at a precarious 14/2. However, Fakhar Zaman arrived with a counter-attacking mindset, smashing four boundaries in his first four balls to settle the nerves and stabilise the innings which proved to be a change of fortune for the visitors. Babar Azam soon found his rhythm as well, and the boundaries began to flow at ease. Together, Fakhar and Babar led Pakistan to a strong recovery, reaching 55/2 by the end of the Powerplay. Unfortunately, Babar couldn't capitalize on his promising start and was dismissed a couple of overs later. This triggered a collapse, with three more wickets falling in quick succession, causing Pakistan to slip further in their chase. Despite Iftikhar Ahmed and Imad Wasim's efforts to take the game deep, the asking rate proved too high to get a grasp off, and the visitors were bundled out for 160 runs, ultimately losing the game by 23 runs.

It's been an extraordinary display of bowling prowess from England to clinch this game by a margin of 23 runs. The bold move to open the bowling with Moeen Ali paid rich dividends for Jos Buttler and his squad, as they swiftly dismissed the dangerous Mohammad Rizwan for a duck. Reece Topley then entered the fray, snaring the wicket of Saim Ayub, amplifying the hosts' early advantage. However, just as England seemed to be firmly in control, a spirited third-wicket partnership between Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam shifted the momentum briefly. Moeen Ali's crucial breakthrough, dismissing Babar, opened the floodgates for the rest of the bowling unit to make inroads. This England team displayed immense character in the field, complemented by exceptional bowling, despite some resilience from the opposition, ultimately securing them the victory to lead the 4-match series 1-0.

19.2W

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! All over for Pakistan! England win by 23 runs and go 1-0 up in the series! Topley slants this one back into the left-hander, on a length, on middle and leg, Shaheen Afridi backs away and goes for a heave across the line. Hits it towards the longer square boundary and fails to get the distance. Skies it towards deep mid-wicket where Phil Salt sprints across to his right and slides to grab it near his chest. Topley ends with 3 wickets to his name.

19.12

Topley bowls it from over the wicket and goes full, at the batter, Shaheen Afridi swipes it off the inner half of the bat in front of deep mid-wicket and collects a couple of runs.

Reece Topley (3-0-39-2) will bowl the final over for England! Pakistan need 26 off 6 balls.

18.61

Delivers a low full toss, on off, Shaheen Afridi digs it out down the ground to long off for only a single. Just 18 runs have come off the last three overs. This has been excellent death bowling from England.

18.51

This is on a short of a length and with no real pace on it, Haris Rauf is through his shot early and toe-ends the shot to backward point for one.

18.42

Superb effort in the deep by Archer. Another searing yorker, on middle, Haris Rauf clears his front leg and takes it on the full. Tonks it to the left of long on where Jofra Archer covers good ground and tumbles to save a couple of runs for his side.

Haris Raufis the last man to walk out to bat for Pakistan.

18.3W

OUT! CLEANED HIM UP! This has been a death bowling masterclass and it has been the slower ball that has done the trick for Chris Jordan. Jordan pulls his length back slightly and attacks the stumps this time. Mohammad Amir fails to pick the change of pace and gets inside the line to scoop it fine on the leg side. He gets undone by the lack of pace and gets his woodwork shattered.

18.21

Jordan continues to nail his yorkers! Sees Shaheen Afridi move to the off side does Jordan but holds his line and length, on a yorker length, wide on off, Shaheen Afridi shapes up for the scoop and does get some bat on it. The ball dribbles towards short fine leg and they scamper across for one.

18.10

Given LBW but Shaheen Afridi successfully overturns it! A loud shout and up goes the finger! Shaheen Afridi missed a straight delivery and had no hesitation in raising the finger. The impact might save Shaheen there. And yes, as expected, the Ball Tracking shows the impact to be outside leg. It was a full toss, angling in at the pads, Shaheen Afridi backed away to go across the line but missed to get hit low on the front pad.

Who will bowl the penultimate over? It will be Chris Jordan to continue and finish off his spell. Pakistan needs 31 off the last 2 overs.

Honing in at the stumps and the length stays full, Shaheen Afridi hits it along the ground to long on for just one. Pakistan need 31 runs off the last 2 overs.

17.51

On a hard length angling into the left-hander, Mohammad Amir makes room and cuts it to deep cover for a single.

17.44

FOUR! Intentional or not, it does not matter. This is on a back of a length, on off, Mohammad Amir hangs back and looks to play at it. Gets an outside edge that races past short third for a boundary.

Mohammad Amir walks out to bat next for Pakistan.

17.3W

OUT! STRAIGHT TO THE MAN IN THE DEEP! Imad Wasim departs and with him, down go the hopes of Pakistan. This has been some comeback from Archer after going for 15 runs in his first over. Nails the yorker, on off and middle, Imad Wasim takes it on the full and hits it well. However, he picks out the man in the deep as he sends it straight to deep cover where Will Jacks takes it near his chest.

17.21

Another off-pace delivery, full as well, Shaheen Afridi firms the drive to long on for a single.

17.10

Steams in from around the wicket and takes pace off straight away, on a good length, on middle, Shaheen Afridi does not get the full delivery he was looking for and inside edges the slog onto the pads.

Make that six singles off the over. Brilliant exhibition of death bowling by Jordan. Lands it on a yorker length, angling away, on off, Shaheen Afridi jams it out in front of cover for one. Pakistan need 38 runs off the last 3 overs.

16.51

Well bowled! Sees the batter make an early shuffle towards the off side does Jordan and slips in another well-executed yorker, near the tramline on off, Imad Wasim can only squeeze it out to cover for the fifth single of the over.

16.41

Nearly sneaked through! This is dished out at 145 kph, full and straight, at the stumps, Shaheen Afridi clears his front leg to hoist it across the line. Gets an inside edge onto the pads and it rolls away to the off side for one.

16.31

16.21

At 143 kph, full and aimed at the pads, Shaheen Afridi turns this one through square leg for a single.

Commentary

We are back for Pakistan's reply. The two umpires and players have made their way out to the middle. It will be the left-hand right-hand combination of Saim Ayub and Mohammad Rizwan to open the innings for Pakistan. England are starting with spin in the form of Moeen Ali. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the game is nicely poised at the halfway mark and Pakistan will feel that they have momentum with them courtesy of their fightback with the ball. However, 184 will be far from easy on what is a two-paced surface. On the other hand, England will feel that they left 10-15 runs out there with the bat. The English pacers will look to replicate what their counterparts did on this surface and wickets in the Powerplay will be crucial. Back in a bit for the chase.

As for Pakistan, it has been a tale of two halves for them and Babar Azam will be mighty pleased with his bowlers responded in the second half of the bowling effort. They started with pace from both ends but it did not go according to the plan for them. The introduction of spin in the form of Imad Wasim resulted in a wicket but the visitors just could not build on that scalp. Imad kept things quiet from his end but the boundaries leaked from the other end. Pakistan were staring at a target in excess of 200 but reassessed their plans and realised that pace off and into the wicket was the way to go. Imad continued to hold end up but the likes of Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi roared back and had a big part to play in Pakistan's fightback. Except for a couple of lapses, Pakistan were pretty tidy in the field. Imad Wasim was the most economical of the lot with figures of 2 for 19 from his four overs.

A couple of lusty blows from Jofra Archer has taken England past 180 but they have fallen short, given the kind of platform that was set at the halfway mark. The first 10 overs saw England score 96 at the loss of just one wicket but the next 10 overs yielded just 87 runs, losing 6 wickets. After being inserted into bat, Jos Buttler and Phil Salt got a couple of boundaries away to get England off to a brisk start. However, Salt could not kick on but Will Jacks got going straight away. Both Jacks and Buttler capitalised on loose deliveries and kept finding the fence with regularity. However, Jacks could not convert his start into something substantial neither could Jonny Bairstow. Despite wickets falling around him, Buttler carried on his merry way and took Pakistan bowlers to all corners of the park. After Buttler fell on 84, the wickets continued to tumble during England's quest to finish on a high. Thanks to a good little cameo from the comeback man, Jofra Archer, England were able to get to 183.

It will be the explosive duo of Phil Salt and Jos Buttler to open the innings for the hosts. Shaheen Afridi will kickstart proceedings with the new ball for Pakistan. The countdown is done and dusted. Away we go...

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Babar Azam (C), Saim Ayub, Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Azam Khan (WK), Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Amir.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (C/WK), Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley.

TOSS - Babar Azam wins the coin flip and Pakistan will BOWL first.

On the other hand, Pakistan have been in T20 mode, coming off a series win against Ireland. After a shocking defeat in the first game, Babar Azam and Co. managed to regroup and clinch the series by winning the next two matches. The Afridi duo, Shaheen and Abbas, caused most of the damage to the Irish. With no warm-up games for Pakistan before the World Cup, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Mohammad Amir seek form in this series. Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, and Fakhar Zaman have stepped up at different times in the recent past and will aim for consistent performances. It's shaping up to be an exciting contest, with toss and team news on the way shortly.

England, led by Jos Buttler, are yet to play a T20I in 2024, but their players have been in the T20 groove, featuring in the Indian T20 League. The squad announcement for the hosts was headlined by the return of Jofra Archer, and all eyes will be on him as he makes his comeback. While Phil Salt and Will Jacks had impactful performances, the performances of Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, and Liam Livingstone for their respective Indian T20 League franchises left a lot to be desired, and they will be eager to get back to their best ahead of the World Cup.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks, to our coverage of the 2nd T20I between England and Pakistan at Edgbaston in Birmingham. After the series opener was washed out, both teams will be eager to make the most of the remaining three matches, with the T20 World Cup just around the corner. The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is fast approaching, and teams are in their final preparation stages. England, genuine title contenders, face a formidable Pakistan side in a four-match T20I series. The first game was washed out due to rain, disappointing Pakistan as they were counting on this match for final evaluations before announcing the World Cup squad. England boasts an impressive lineup, with Phil Salt and captain Jos Buttler showcasing their skills in the Indian T20 League before rejoining the national side. Their middle order is stacked with power-hitters like Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, and Moeen Ali. A significant boost for England is the return of Jofra Archer, who has been in fiery form in domestic games. Speedsters Mark Wood and Reece Topley add further strength to their bowling attack. Adil Rashid, their main spinner, has performed well in this format recently, with Ali offering solid support. Pakistan, meanwhile, has shown inconsistency in recent series. The reappointment of Babar Azam as captain could be pivotal, but it remains to be seen if he can deliver the desired results. The bulk of the scoring responsibility will fall on the skipper, along with Mohammad Rizwan, Saim Ayub, and Fakhar Zaman, who have all been in good form. Azam Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed are expected to provide late-order firepower, while spinning all-rounders Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan are crucial for their dual contributions. Their pace attack, featuring Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Shaheen Afridi, is one to watch. They have the potential to dismantle any batting lineup if they perform to their capabilities. Both teams are eager for victory, Pakistan to boost morale and England to carry winning momentum into the World Cup. The Men in Green will need to address their recent inconsistencies and focus on cohesive team performance. Their strategy will likely revolve around leveraging their potent pace attack and ensuring their top order provides a strong foundation. On the other hand, England's strategy will hinge on their explosive batting lineup and the experience of their seasoned bowlers to keep the pressure on the visitors. In conclusion, this series promises intense competition, with both sides aiming to fine-tune their strategies and secure a psychological edge ahead of the World Cup. Fans eagerly await to see which team will emerge victorious in this critical preparatory phase.
