Commentary

Right then, this is it from this action-packed marquee clash where South Africa took the game away from England. South Africa are now the table-toppers in Group B maintaining a clean sheet, and England on the other hand will be gutted as they were too close yet too far in the end. Well, the clash lived up to its billing, and the fans were treated with an absolute humdinger. The action continues and things are spicing up in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2024 as next up in the Super 8 phase is an exciting clash between both the hosts of this prestigious competition going up against each other. West Indies will be taking on the USA in another highly anticipated clash of Group B. This game will begin on Saturday, 22nd June and the first ball will be bowled at 6 am IST (12.30 am GMT). But you can surely join us for the pre-match build-up. Till then, take care and cheers.

Aiden Markram, the captain of South Africa says that specifically today when it got to the final three overs, the odds were against them but the bowlers held their nerves. Adds that Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks took on the Powerplay well for them and they knew they needed to squeeze in the middle and save runs in the field and are on the right track. Mentions that every match is going to be a challenge and applauds a few of the players who have stepped up and he doesn't want to dig too deep and just trusts the guys and their abilities. Adds that you need to give the bowler the freedom to bowl his best delivery first and then take the pitch into consideration and goes on to laud Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone for their efforts. He ends by reflecting on the crucial catch he took and says that it was one of his most important ones.

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England starts by appreciating Quinton de Kock as says he came in with a lot of intent and they couldn't match up with the bat, and also mentions that they were 20 runs behind in the Powerplay. Adds they did well with the ball and came in brilliantly. He appreciates Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook for putting up a good fight and almost taking away the game from South Africa. Ends up by saying they are still very much in the competition and they have played really good brand of cricket but just couldn't get across the line and that they still believe

Quinton de Kock is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant innings early in the game. De Kock starts by saying that a couple of night games early on have led everyone to believe that it is a very high-scoring pitch but it is quite different in the day game. Adds that his plan was just to bat and score heavily and the wicket was good early on and had a nice bounce too. Mentions that he takes it game by game and starts off from scratch. Reckons that they bowled well, especially in the Powerplay which was the best time to score runs and to defend 160 on a decent wicket was a good effort from them.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, South Africa started off steady, but then Quinton de Kock shifted gears and gave the pacers a rough time. They sailed through the powerplay without any hiccups. Once the fielding restrictions were lifted, and spinners came on, runs were at a premium as they squeezed and stemmed the flow of runs. No batter barring Quinton de Kock was at ease at the crease and wickets kept falling with QDK too perishing eventually on 65. Jofra Archer, expensive in his first over, picked a brilliant 3-fer and the others too chipped in big time and didn't give away too many. Jos Buttler in particular, was sensational behind the wickets and made a solid impact. David Miller and Tristan Stubbs played crucial clutch cameos in the backend, propelling South Africa to get 160. Into the chase, as they call it a game of two halves, the momentum swung in favor of both sides but eventually, it was the South Africans who held their nerves of steel and won this cracker of a game.

The Proteas, looking to recover from their modest batting performance, needed quick wickets. Kagiso Rabada delivered, snaring an early victim thanks to Hendricks' spectacular catch at cover. Marco Jansen provided solid support, maintaining tight lines. England narrowly avoided losing two early wickets when Klaasen couldn't hold onto Bairstow's chance. Despite this, South Africa's pacers kept the scoring in check during the powerplay. Maharaj then struck in his second over, dismissing Bairstow and leveling the contest. Throughout, the Proteas' fielding was top-notch, perfectly complementing their bowlers' efforts. Heinrich Klaasen redeemed himself shortly off Keshav Maharaj's bowling. Maharaj struck gold with a couple of wickets. However, things sharply changed towards the backend as Kagiso Rabada conceded 18 runs in the 15th over. Baartman too, missed his mark and leaked runs right and left. Suddenly the Proteas found themselves under the pump. Kagiso Rabada stepped up strongly to his reputation and struck gold in the very next over and dismissed Livingstone and gave just 4 runs off that over. Marco Jansen then came clutch and delivered an excellent penultimate over. It was all left to Anrich Nortje with the mission to defend 13 runs off the final over. He got a wicket off his first ball but conceded a boundary and bounced back and covered pretty well in the latter balls, restricting the Englishmen.

England's innings began with Jos Buttler and Phil Salt cautiously testing the pitch. Salt managed a powerful six and a boundary, but fell shortly after for 11. Buttler and Jonny Bairstow then kept the score moving, skillfully rotating the strike. Bairstow got an early reprieve when he was dropped, but couldn't capitalize and departed soon after. As a result, England crumbled inside the Powerplay with two men down early and were comparatively behind their opponents. Jos Buttler too struggled during his time at the crease and eventually got out on a sedate 17. England were in all sorts of trouble with the rescue work left on the shoulders of the middle order. Harry Brook settled himself first and then got off the blocks punishing poor deliveries with disdain. Liam Livingstone provided solid support from the other end. And as they say, cricket is a funny old game, the pendulum swung sharply to their side as this partnership progressed towards the backend. Brook looked unstoppable and scored a resiliently fought 50. Liam Livingstone put Baartman to the cleaners and fetched 21 runs from his over before getting out eventually. With 14 needed off the last over, Brook departed in the first delivery and couldn't see his team through. Sam Curran struck a boundary in the third ball but couldn't finish in style in the end.

SOUTH AFRICA WIN THIS CRACKER OF A CONTEST BY 7 RUNS AND MAINTAIN THEIR UNBEATEN RUN IN THIS 2024 ICC T20 WORLD CUP! What an absolute humdinger this has been, going down to the wire. Two excellent sides going toe-to-toe against each other, with no one ready to concede, but it was the mighty Proteas who ended on the winning side. England fought hard but the last few overs toward the backend didn't go as planned and that made the difference and it was too little too late in the end.

That's it, South Africa have done it! Anrich Nortje hits the deck hard and bowls it around middle and leg, angling it in with pace on. Jofra Archer stays back in the crease, clears the front leg and swings across the line but misses and the ball goes through to the keeper for a dot ball. SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 7 RUNS!

19.51

That should do it for South Africa and that's brilliant bowling from Anrich Nortje. Goes pace on and nails it in the blockhole around off. Sam Curran hangs deep but can't get under it and only jams it out to mid off for a single. 8 needed off the final ball.

19.40

A golden dot ball and Sam Curran has denied the single to Jofra Archer. Anrich Nortje misses his mark and serves a full toff over middle and leg, Sam Curran does get cramped up a bit and ends up heaving it straight to deep mid-wicket.

19.34

FOUR! That is a poor delivery from Anrich Nortje but Sam Curran still had to put it away. Putched up full on the legs, Curran flicks it away and gets it fine of the man at short fine leg as the ball races away into the fence. 9 needed now off 3 balls.

19.21

Goes full and quick and attacks the toes well, Jofra Archer clears the front leg and whips it away in front of square leg for a single.

Jofra Archer is the new man in. England still need 14 off the last 5 deliveries.

19.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Unbelievable take from skipper Aiden Markram and he could have just won the game for his side. Anrich Nortje steams in from over the stumps and rolls his fingers over the ball before pitching it up around off stump. Harry Brook is on the front foot and looks to hit through the line but is early in the shot and the ball gets lofted over mid off. Markram backtracks and keeps his eyes on the ball before diving over his shoulder and grabbing a stellar catch with both hands. Markram even manages to keep the ball in his grasp when his elbows thud into the ground. What a turnaround this could be!

Anrich Nortje (3-0-29-0) to bowl the final over of the chase. England need 14 off the last 6 deliveries. This has been a cracker of a contest so far and it is coming down to the wire. Brace yourselves!

Pushing hard for two and they will get it, 14 needed now off the final over and that is a solid over from Marco Jansen. Shorter in length and angled at the batter, Sam Curran lifts it away over the square leg region and runs back for the second run.

18.51

Up in the air but won't carry! Jansen bangs it in and angles it well across off stump, Harry Brook comes forward to go over covers but slices it up into the breeze and the ball lands well short of Tristan Stubbs who runs in from deep cover. Just another single.

18.41

Short of a good length and angled in from around middle, Sam Curran half-pulls it away to deep mid-wicket and turns the strike over.

18.31

Bowled back of a length, a bit slower and angled across the right-hander. Harry Brook goes a long way across the off stump trying to pull it behind square but gets it off the gloves and the ball goes nowhere. They scamper through for a quick single.

18.22

That is brilliant running and that will be FIFTY for Harry Brook, his first in the T20 World Cup and third T20I fifty overall. Marco Jansen bangs this one in a bit over the stumps, Brook gets across a bit and pulls it through mid-wicket and races back for the second run. Brook will be aware that his job isn't quite done yet.

18.10

Jansen comes from over the stumps and pitches it a bit up, angling it across the right-hander. Harry Brook looks to fetch and swips across the line but miscues it back to the bowler.

17.61

Kagiso Rabada delivers under pressure again just as he did in the last game and South Africa are still in the game. Goes slower and into the pitch again, angling it in at the batter, Harry Brook backs away and pulls it to deep mid-wicket for a single. 21 needed now off 12 balls.

17.51

Another slower ball, on a good length and sliding onto the pads, Sam Curran tucks it neatly through mid-wicket and looks for two again but won't get it.

17.41

Slower one, into the pitch and following the batter down the leg side, Harry Brook pulls it towards deep mid-wicket for a single.

17.31

Bowled a bit into the pitch and over middle and leg, Sam Curran works it away from the crease and through mid-wicket for a single.

Sam Curran walks in at number 7. England need 25 runs off 16 balls remaining. This is surely going down to the wire!

17.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Would you believe it? Kagiso Rabada with another full toss and this time, Liam Livingstone has holed out. Livingstone will though feel that he has done his job. KG serves this one on the pads and gets it to dip just a bit, Liam Livingstone picks it up and looks to slog it over deep backward square leg but hits into the breeze. Tristan Stubbs moves to his right from deep square leg, slides on his knees, and takes a good catch under pressure with the reverse cup. Rabada seems pumped up but is it too late for South Africa?

17.10

Kagiso Rabada now bowls a full toss, on middle and gets away with it. Liam Livingstone punches the ball straight back and KG manages to get a hand on it.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of South Africa who can be seen in a huddle led by skipper Aiden Markram. It will be the usual duo of skipper Jos Buttler and Phil Salt to open the innings for England. Marco Jansen has the new ball in hand and will get proceedings underway with the ball. Let's play...

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, 163 is the lowest first-innings total at this venue so far in this competition, and that hands the advantage to England who have a hard-hitting and deep batting lineup. South Africa though will believe that they have the bowling attack that can defend any total and will be eyeing early wickets in the Powerplay. Don't go anywhere as the all-important chase is up next.

David Miller is up for a flash interview. He says it was nice to get some runs towards the backend. Says they started well but slowed down in the mid-overs. He reckons that the boys batted well and thinks 160 is a good total. Ends up by saying that the wicket is slightly on the slower side.

England have managed to get back into the contest after the early onslaught from Quinton de Kock. The spinners bowled well in the middle phase and Adil Rashid in particular was very economical and even picked up a wicket. Jofra Archer too came back strongly after a horrible first over. Their outfielding was sensational as skipper Jos Buttler led from the front with a fine catch and a stellar run-out. Even in the final over, they took a couple of amazing catches which helped Archer finish the innings on a high and England will feel quite pleased with that effort in the field.

South Africa started with a bang thanks to some lusty blows from Quinton de Kock and they managed to have all wickets intact at the end of the Powerplay with 63 runs on the board. Reeza Hendricks was sluggish at the other end. de Kock was forced to take a few risks and soon enough, they started losing wickets in the middle phase. David Miller stabilized the innings somewhat after a torrid period of batting and managed to get some boundaries in the death overs. Tristan Stubbs provided decent support to Miller and managed to take South Africa over the 160-run mark.

An innings that could be divided into different phases as neither side was able to dominate throughout the first 20 overs but eventually, it will be England who will be the happier of the two sides heading into the break as they have restricted the Proteas to 163/6 which is about 20 runs short of what looks like a par score.

Pace off on a length, in front of the stumps, Tristan Stubbs plays the pull shot way too early, inside edges to the widish square leg region. Jos Buttler chases the ball and just keeps it to a single. What an excellent finish by England towards the backend. South Africa finish at 163/6.

19.52

An attempted yorker on middle, Tristan Stubbs punches it to the leg side towards deep mid-wicket. Two taken.

19.41

Full and on the leg stump line, Keshav Maharaj pushes it towards backward point for one.

19.34

FOUR! Doesn't get the Hat-Trick but a boundary instead. Back of a length, and outside off. Keshav Maharaj cuts it towards widish deep third. Mark Wood runs hard yards and dives to his right but parries the ball with his left hand into the fence with the momentum.

Keshav Maharaj is the new man in.

19.2W

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! This time Sam Curran takes an audacious catch! Jofra Archer gets his third. Full and on off, Marco Jansen clears his front foot and tries to hit it too hard, and loses his shape trying it to play it over the off side but ends up slicing it over covers. Sam Curran there backtracks from the inner ring, keeps his eyes glued to the ball, and puts in a timely dive to take a sensational catch. He tumbles on the ground but sustains the catch.

Marco Jansen is the new man in.

19.1W

OUT! TAKEN! Magnificent catch from Harry Brook! Jofra Archer serves it fuller in length, and shade on the off stump line, David Miller clears his front foot to open up the off side but gets it off the toe-end and hits it flat in the air and to the left of long off. Harry Brook patrolling the long off fence sprints to his left, gets low and takes a screamer of a catch. He slides with the momentum but manages to keep it in the hands. Miller departs.

18.51

Around the wicket, angling on off from a good length, Tristan Stubbs swings across but chops it over the stumps with an inside edge. The ball trickles towards leg side for a single.

18.41

Slower again, short and outside off, David Miller creates room and cuts it wide of covers for a single.

18.41wd

WIDE! Slower one, a bit too short and outside off. Wided.

18.36

SIX! This time he gets the timing correct! Misses the yorker by a yard or so, on off, and serves a friendly half-volley, David Miller makes room by shuffling to the leg side and to open the off side for him. He lifts it up and over covers for a huge six.

18.22

Almost a waist-height full toss on the leg side, David Miller picks it up with no real timing, and pulls it off the top half of the bat on a bounce between deep mid-wicket and deep square leg. Liam Livingstone from deep mid-wicket sprints to his left and puts a big dive in to push the ball back in. Two taken.

17.51

Short and outside off, David Miller stands tall and pulls it flatly on a bounce at deep mid-wicket and rotates the strike with a single.

17.40

Slower one, an off-cutter on off, and on a short of a good length, David Miller goes for a cut shot but misses.

Fuller and angling on the leg stump line, Tristan Stubbs flicks it along the carpet for a single towards widish long on.

FOUR! That is a poor delivery from Anrich Nortje but Sam Curran still had to put it away. Putched up full on the legs, Curran flicks it away and gets it fine of the man at short fine leg as the ball races away into the fence. 9 needed now off 3 balls.

OUT!

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Baartman strikes now and England is in all sorts of trouble being four down now. Ottneil Baartman comes from around the wicket, and delivers a short-pitched delivery outside off, Moeen Ali tries to drag it uppishly over mid-wicket but doesn't move his feet at all, and hits it too hard, losing his shape and completely slicing the ball up in the air. The ball goes up in the air and travels straight into the safe hands of Keshav Maharaj who runs from the deep and takes a good catch ahead of deep mid-wicket.

10.11

On the back of a length, around off, Harry Brook guides it with the pace towards deep third for a single.

Drinks! Well, this game is more tilted toward the Proteas as they have managed to dismiss the top three, way before the halfway mark in the chase. The pacers started off really well with Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen troubling the batters for runs. Keshav Maharaj then compounded the pressure and hasn't given away anything as well. Also, South Africa's efforts in the fielding have been top-drawer, to say the least. England is crawling behind the eight ball and needs a strong resilient partnership.

OUT! DRAGGED ON! Aiden Markram cannot believe it and is devastated but he has to walk back cheaply here. Smart bowling this from Adil Rashid as he slows this one right up, bowling it at just 76.3 clicks and giving it a nice loop outside the off stump. OUT! RUN OUT! Oh, wow! What a sensational bit of fielding from Jos Buttler and he is ecstatic and rightly so too. Mark Wood misfires with the bumper again and spills it well down the leg side. Heinrich Klaasen leaves it alone and Buttler gets an awkward bounce as the ball rolls off his body towards short fine leg. David Miller calls Klaasen for the single a bit late and Klaasen isn't even watching his partner but does set off. Buttler takes off one glove, gets to the ball, turns around, and just scores a direct hit at the bowler's end. Klaasen isn't even in the frame.

Back of a length and angling across the left-hander at 146.4 clicks, David Miller frees his arms and hits it away towards deep cover for just another single.

13.31

NOT OUT! Closer than it initially appeared and England do keep their review but Heinrich Klaasen does survive. Sam Curran stays around the stumps and goes a bit wider of the crease and angles it in on a good length from around off stump. Klaasen goes across the off stump to flick it away but the ball goes off the pads towards short fine leg. They get a leg bye and the appeal for LBW is turned down. Nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows the wickets as the umpire's call.

Is that out? A huge confident appeal from Sam Curran for LBW. The Umpire says no but Curran convinces his skipper to challenge the on-field decision. Nothing on UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows that the ball is just clipping on the bails on the middle stump on Umpire's Call. Not Out.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! A stunning take from Jos Buttler behind the stumps and the decision to bring Jofra Archer back into the attack has proved to be a masterstroke. Comes back from around the stumps does Archer and pushes the ball wide of the off stump on a good length but rolls his fingers over the ball and takes all the pace off. Quinton de Kock hangs back in the crease and looks to force the ball over the off-side but only manages to get an outside edge that flies to the left of the keeper. NOT OUT! High drama out in the middle! Adil Rashid lands this one fuller and on the leg stump line with a decent flight. QDK premeditates and sits on his knee, sweeps it uppishly but doesn't time it well and the ball goes flat, and straight towards Mark Wood stationed at deep fine. He bends low and takes it just a few centimeters above the grass. However, Quinton de Kock chats with the umpire for a clean catch. Well, now the question is whether he has kept his fingers underneath. The on-field umpire reviews it for a clean catch and several angles come in. Eventually, the third umpire confirms that Wood has grassed it. Jos Buttler is visibly not happy with the decision and QDK is let off the hook.

Is that a clean catch? The fielder in the deep seems to have taken a fairly regulation catch but quite low in front of him. Quinton de Kock is asking whether it is clean or not and eventually, the umpires go upstairs. The replays show that Mark Wood did take the catch but his fingers weren't completely underneath it. It is a tight call though and the third umpire zooms in to get a better view. The conclusion is that the fingers are pointing downwards and the ball seems to be in contact with the ground. NOT OUT comes up on the big screen and Jos Buttler isn't happy with it and demands more of an explanation from the onfield umpires but that won't change the decision.

Just for a brief moment, it felt like the fielder at deep fine is in play but the wind sails the ball over his head and clears the fence.

Done with the pre-match formalities and it's time for the action to commence at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. The sun shines to its full glory and out stride the two dynamic South African openers, Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks with the latter taking the guard. The fiery left-arm pacer, Reece Topley will begin the proceedings with the ball and a slip in place for England. The countdown finishes, and, here we go...

We are just a few moments away from this marquee clash to begin! But before that, the two sets of players are getting lined up for their respective national anthems followed by the match officials. It will be South Africa's first, followed by the national anthem of England.

South African skipper, Aiden Markram says that they would have bowled first as well given it is an early start and would have fancied chasing but will now look to put a good total on the board. Adds that going forward, you need to rest and recover quickly and get back into the mix. Mentions that the top order needed an outing and they got that in the last game as the middle order has been digging them out of trouble on most occasions.

Jos Buttler, the captain of England wins the toss and elects to bowl first. He says it is a fresh wicket and looks like a good wicket and says they will fancy another chase and go with the same formula. Adds the ball will swing with the wind and there might be some moisture in the early stages of the game. Further adds that they performed really well against West Indies in all facets of the game and now they are up against another tough opposition and he expects a good game. On Jofra Archer, he says he is in a good space of mind and they want to look after him as much as they can. Ends by informing that they are playing the same side from the last game.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (C), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ottneil Baartman (In for Tabraiz Shamsi).

England (Unchanged XI) - Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (C/WK), Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Reece Topley.

TOSS - Up goes the flip of the coin and it lands in favor of England. Jos Buttler opts to BOWL first.

South Africa on the other hand have won 5 out of 5 matches so far and four of them were close encounters. Also, given the fact that they haven't faced a really world-class side yet could be a troubling factor and England won't be a team that will let them off the hook easily. However, the confidence will be high in the Proteas camp and a couple of their crucial players have started to find rhythm as well which could be a telling factor. So, can South Africa make it 6 wins out of 6 and take a crucial lead in Group 2? Or will England capitalize on the momentum from their last win and hand the Proteas their first defeat of the campaign? We shall find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

England are the reigning T20 World Champions and after an up-and-down preliminary group stage showing, they have now started playing like champions which was evident in that huge win against hosts West Indies in the previous game. The depth in batting that they have makes them a formidable opponent for any side and if that bowling line-up starts clicking a bit more, we could see them back to their best. All eyes will be on Phil Salt as he continues to have a fabulous 2024 whether be it in franchise cricket or at the international stage.

Hello and welcome to the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia where England will go up against South Africa in Match 5 of the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2024. This will be the second match for both sides in this stage of the competition and with either side having won their first game, the victor in this game will have complete control of their group and will be in a stellar position to qualify for the semifinals.

... MATCH DAY ...

The first round of Super Eight matches are underway but we have already seen all four teams in Group 2 take part in a game at this stage. Next up in Match 5 of the Super Eight, unbeaten South Africa will take on a resurgent England side at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St. Lucia. Both teams won their first match of this stage of the competition and will be vying for supremacy in Group 2 and the winner might just guarantee a place in the semifinals as well or at the very least, they will be in pole position to do so. South Africa were the first team to put points on the board in their group with a win over USA. They were put into bat first and Quinton de Kock finally came to the party as he smashed 80-odd runs in no time and skipper Aiden Markram also played a solid knock which will make him feel good too. Reeza Hendricks still hasn't fired and might have left the door open for someone like Ryan Rickelton to come in but given QDK is back to his best, they might still persist with Hendricks who will play more of an anchor role. Heinrich Klaasen was again at the forefront in the middle overs and along with Tristan Stubbs took the Proteas to a big total. With the ball, consistent performer Ottneil Baartman was dropped as they went with an extra spinner and kept that experienced pace trio of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen intact. Keshav Maharaj repaid that trust and was prolific in the middle overs but Tabraiz Shamsi was asked to bowl at the death and gave away plenty under pressure. Moving on to England, they made fairly light work of hosts West Indies as Phil Salt played an unbelievable knock and got good support from a couple of other batters. The bowlers also did extremely well to pull back things as the Windies threatened to go well past 200 runs for a while and ended up scoring just 180 runs. The pace attack still doesn't look quite settled and only Jofra Archer seems to be an assured starter with the likes of Mark Wood and Chris Jordan vying for that spot. Sam Curran has also come in and done reasonably well but a lot will ride on the spin duo of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid as England look to step on the gas at the right time and get one step closer to defending their title. With both sides putting on strong batting performances in the last game, England have a slim advantage of playing their previous game on the very same ground but in the end, it might come down to that spin duo on both sides and the team to control the middle phase might just come out on top. Who are you backing for the win?
