Commentary

Right then, it was a pretty one-sided contest out here in Bengaluru. Sri Lanka has emerged victorious and they take home a couple of points. The caravan now moves to Chennai where Pakistan will take on South Africa on Friday, 27th October 2023. The action will begin at 2.00 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) but join us for our coverage which will start much earlier. Until then, Cheers!

Kusal Mendis, the victorious skipper of Sri Lanka says this win will help their NRR. Adds that every department did their job well and he is very happy with his team. Tells that this win will give them a lot of confidence and he believes in his team that they can win their remaining games and make it to the top four. Credits Lahiru Kumara for his excellent bowling. Mentions that having Angelo Mathews helps a lot and he gives his inputs in the middle which helps the overall performance of the team. Says that the fielding was excellent which helped them put more pressure on England and ultimately got them the win in the end.

The England captain, Jos Buttler says that he is disappointed and feels that they are a long way from their best. He feels that the reason for their performance is not clear and mentions that as a captain he will be the first one to work on performing better. He feels that they have a good and experienced team which is why it's more frustrating to not perform up to the expectations. He mentions that selection is based on consistency but their main focus is their performance. He adds that many mistakes are been made and cites the example of a couple of run-outs that happened. He says that the biggest thing to cling on is their personal pride and regardless of what happens in the tournament, they will work on improving their game.

Lahiru Kumara is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his excellent spell earlier in the game. He says that he is very happy with his performance and the most important thing was the win. Adds that he didn't change much and the Australia game was an off day for him and he just focused on the basics. He says that having Angelo Mathews in the side is inspiring as he helps a lot with his experience. Mentions that sticking to the same line and lengths during the middle overs proved to be good as he got the reward as wickets.

The Presentation ceremony…

Earlier in the game, we saw a fantastic bowling display and some good fielding showcases from the Lankans. The English failed to capitalise on a very good start which created room for Sri Lanka to display their bowling prowess. Angelo Mathews had a good outing in his first match this season along with Lahiru Kumara who showed his skill by putting the opposition under pressure. The bowlers had the upper hand on the batters throughout the innings which hurt England. The defending champions could only put up 156 on the board.

England have had a day to forget. After failing to put up a competitive total on the board in the first innings, the only way for them to creep back into the game was to take timely wickets. David Willey made sure of that as he dismissed two of their batters in the first powerplay. However, none of the other bowlers managed to take wickets which allowed a very strong partnership to form out there in the middle. This sealed the game for the opposition. Jos Buttler and his team will not be happy with their performance and will have a lot to discuss in the dressing room. The defending champions are on the edge of finishing outside the top 4 on the points table. The score on the board was just now enough to defend as the opposition wrapped it up in just under 26 overs.

Sri Lanka looked ahead in the game since the first innings. A splendid bowling performance made sure that they restricted the English to a score of 156. The batters had to play it safe and not take unnecessary risks as the total was low. Kusal Perera seemed to be struggling out there at the start. He was soon dismissed for a low score. Kusal Mendis came in next and played a few good shots but he too was sent back to the pavilion. It looked as if the chase might prove a bit more difficult than expected. It was the partnership of Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama that brought the Lankans back into the game. They both managed to complete their half-centuries and took the game to the end finishing it off with a maximum.

Sri Lanka have managed to secure another comfortable win in this World Cup. This one will surely give them a lot of confidence. England on the other hand will be very disappointed with their overall performance. It seemed as if none of their plans seemed to work in their favour. This loss will certainly hurt their hopes of qualifying in the top 4 and their campaign hangs in uncertainty. A good performance with the ball and some good batting by Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama helped the Lankans take home another two points.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are making their way out to the middle now. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera are the two openers for Sri Lanka. Chris Woakes to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, England have posted an under-par total on the board and will need to bowl extremely well to defend this one. Sri Lanka will know that this is their game to lose now and they just need to be sensible with the bat and not take unnecessary risk. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Angelo Mathews is up for a chat. He says that it feels good to be back and the fielders complimented the bowlers well here. Adds that he loves to challenge himself and bowling in the past few months has helped him immensely. Mentions that he was well prepared for this chance and it turned out to be good for him and the side. Also adds that they just need to be positive with the chase and play the ball on its merit.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, was excellent in the field and with the ball as well. Kusal Mendis uses his resources perfectly and the changes that they made for this game turned out to be fruitful. Lahiru Kumara was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Angelo Mathews picked up a couple as well. Kasun Rajitha also got two scalps while Maheesh Theekshana finished the job with the last wicket. The catching was brilliant as well and they will be pleased with their effort here. Now, it is up to their batters to complete the task.

A fascinating bowling performance from Sri Lanka as they have restricted England to just 156! This is also the lowest-ever total for England against the Lankans in a World Cup game. The English openers got off to a steady start but both of them failed to convert their starts into big scores. Joe Root failed to make much impact as well as he got run out after a miscommunication with Jonny Bairstow while Jos Buttler's poor form continued. Ben Stokes was their top-scorer with 43 runs but with no real support from the other end, he too could not hang around for much longer and in the end, the defending champions are left staring down the barrel.

33.2W

OUT! Stamp of humiliation on the English side as Maheesh Theekshana takes the last one. Fuller one, a bit quicker outside off, Mark Wood opts to step out of his crease and go big but fails to get any part of his bat behind this one with Kusal Mendis collecting this behind the wicket and removing the bails in a flash. England are bundled out inside 34 over for just 156 runs.

33.10

Beauty by Maheesh Theekshana as he spins one away from the right-hander just outside his off leaving the batter with no idea on what to do with this one.

OUT! RUN OUT! Great presence of mind from Kusal Mendis! Maheesh Theekshana fires this one down the leg side, David Willey misses his glance and Kusal Mendis collect it. 31.50

We are ready for the pre-match formalities with the match official heading out leading the two sides for their respective National Anthems. It will be Sri Lanka's first, followed by England's National Anthem.

Kusal Mendis, the captain of Sri Lanka says that they would have batted first as the wicket looks good. Adds that he has enough support around him which makes his job easier. Informs Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Kumara come in for this game.

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says that they will bat first. Adds that the surface looks dry and might spin later also on a used wicket runs on board are key. Mentions that they have been short on performance but they are backing themselves for a good outing today. Also adds that the frustration is there on not playing to their abilities but they have full confidence in each other coming good. Informs they have three changes with Reece Topley ruled out Chris Woakes comes in today. Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone come in for Gus Atkinson and Harry Brook as they try to balance the side again.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (C/WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Angelo Mathews (In place of Chamika Karunaratne), Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara (In place of Dushan Hemantha), Dilshan Madushanka.

PITCH REPORT - Ravi Shastri and Dinesh Karthik are out for a pitch report and they say that the pitch is on the drier side and the ball will grip a bit in the second half of the day. The pitch is covered with a bit more grass in the center than near the popping crease. The pitch does have some help on offer for the spinners. The dimensions are even and the surface looks a well-equipped one for the balance of the game.

Sri Lanka managed to gain some momentum with a victory over the Netherlands in their previous game. On the other hand, England will need to regroup after suffering heavy defeats against Afghanistan, South Africa, and New Zealand. The addition of Angelo Mathews in place of Matheesha Pathirana for Sri Lanka means the side now has much me experience, and Brydon Carse for Reece Topley is a like-for-like change for the English side. The match will be a crucial one for both teams as they fight to stay in the tournament. So, who do you think will win this pivotal event? We shall find out together. Toss and team news to follow shortly...

Hello and a warm welcome folks! This match between England and Sri Lanka is crucial for both teams as a loss would put them at risk of an early exit. Both teams have struggled with consistent performances and have lost three out of their four games. Injuries to key players like Reece Topley, Dasun Shanaka, Matheesha Pathirana, and Maheesh Theekshana have further weakened the teams. Despite having talented and experienced players, both teams seem to lack the complete package.

...MATCH DAY...

The games continue to come thick and fast in the 2023 ODI World Cup, and match number 25 is upon us, which sees England go up against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The defending champions, England, have had a far-from-ideal start to their title defence, as they currently sit 9th on the points table with only one win from the four games played. Sri Lanka find themselves in a similar position, but they are placed 8th with a solitary win from four matches. After suffering a shock loss against Afghanistan, England were hoping to bounce back, but they were handed a crushing defeat by South Africa. While chasing a humongous target of 400 runs, England could never get going in the chase, and they were rolled over for 170. If Jos Buttler's men are to get their campaign back on track, the batting unit will have to click collectively. The positive for them is that Ben Stokes returned against South Africa, strengthening their batting. Dawid Malan and Joe Root have not had the impact they would have liked, as have Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler, who are yet to get a big score. Harry Brook was impressive in the game against Afghanistan but has yet to truly announce his arrival on the big stage. To add to their troubles, left-arm seamer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the competition after fracturing his index finger against South Africa. Brydon Carse has been named as his replacement, but he is unlikely to play against Sri Lanka. With seamers not being that effective in the last outing, England might look at other pace bowling options in Sam Curran or Chris Woakes. On the other hand, Sri Lanka come into this game on the back of a 5-wicket victory against the Netherlands. They restricted the Dutch to 262 and chased it down with 10 balls remaining. Having collected their first points of the tournament, the Asian side will look to build on the momentum created. With Dasun Shanaka already out of the World Cup, Sri Lanka were dealt another injury blow as Matheesha Pathirana's shoulder injury cut his tournament short. Travelled as one of the two reserves, Angelo Mathews has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for the young pacer. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Mendis have done the heavy lifting, while Pathum Nissanka has returned to form with back-to-back fifties. Kusal Perera and Charith Asalanka have blown hot and cold so far, and they will be hoping to step up with the bat. As they did in the previous encounter, Kasun Rajitha and Dilshan Madushanka will be expected to deal damage with the new ball. Looking at England's struggles against Afghan spinners, ace spinner Maheesh Theekshana will hold the key for Sri Lanka. Although England hold a slight edge over the Asian side in ODIs, the previous three ODI World Cup meetings have been won by Sri Lanka. Who are you backing to come out on top in Bengaluru?
